Rhett Ouston loves his job as the captain of the Milvus team. He was born for the world of covert ops, secret missions, and tactical training.

And the best part? He gets to do it all with the love of his life by his side—Milvus team medic Jay Lin.

But then two new men are added to his team, along with doubts and secrets, and everything goes sideways.

Thrown into the deep end in a country they shouldn’t be in, with no help from HQ, Rhett doesn’t know who to trust. And when the mission they’re on to stop a global terrorism deal goes to hell, tensions and trust within his team implode.

“Trust your instincts,” Jay tells him. “They’ve never failed you yet.”

So Rhett digs in, determined to do the one thing he knows how. He’s going to make this team work even if it kills him.

And it very well might.

Safety info, content warnings and tropes down below.

I will read pretty much anything NR Walker writes, but I admit I'm always a little extra excited when she writes suspense and action. I loved The Kite and The Bait, and I've been not-so-patiently waiting for The Team ever since Captain and Medic were introduced. Rhett and Jay are literally perfect together. I rarely read books with an already established couple but it worked so well in this story. We got all the necessary info about the origin of Rhett and Jay without it overshadowing the plot. It was honestly a nice break from all the books and characters where the couples refuse to talk and the painful figuring-shit-out phase. These two were just so solid. They know how to communicate, they know what they need and want (in and out of bed), and their love for each other really came through. I loved it lots.

I'm also always a huge fan of the big buff leader guy being an absolute pussycat for his tiny spitfire boyfriend. Rhett might be the captain, but there's no doubt about who really calls the shots.

I hope there will be more books for these two guys.

Jay Lin had been a beacon of light in his life for eight years. A sassy, sarcastic, smart-mouthed ray of fucking sunshine. His ray of sunshine.

“For the record,” he said flatly, “it’s called respect, and your grandmother is savage. Plus you have fifty cousins, and in I walk, the only tall white guy. They still make unseasoned-chicken jokes to my face. It’s been five years.”

So then Jay took him to bed. He pushed him onto the mattress and crawled on top of him. “Let me take care of you,” Jay murmured. “I’ll make you feel so good, baby.”

THIS is what I’m talking about! The Bait delivers that perfect mix of action and romance—though honestly, it’s more action than romance—and it works beautifully. Every mission, every high-stakes moment feels even more intense because it’s driven by the relationships between the characters, whether they’re romantic or platonic.

A lot of the recent military, law-enforcement, or political-intrigue romances I’ve read put the romance front and center (which makes sense—it’s romance), but here, the military ops and suspense plot get just as much space to breathe. That balance keeps me hooked from start to finish.

Jay and Rhett already being an established couple is a huge win for me—I didn’t have to spend a single second wondering if or how they’d get together, which let me dive straight into the story’s action without distraction. It made the plot feel tighter, more engaging, and even more satisfying.

I genuinely love this series, and this book was no exception. I even slowed down near the end because I didn’t want it to be over. A solid 10/10—highly recommend.

I finally got the audio with Glen Lloyd because I could listen to him talk about the most boring topic ever, and I'd still be captivated.

I've loved Jay and Rhett ever since they first appeared alongside Harry and Asher, so I was really looking forward to reading their story. I would have liked to have more background on how they got together or just silly and romantic moments, but I also had a great time with the story and the new members of Alpha 1.

There is zero romance in here. Two of the characters just happen to be together. I’m pretty bummed since the characters were exceptionally lovable. We could’ve done with a lot more backstory, especially about their relationship. This was essentially an action book loosely tied to the previous two. The Harry and Asher cameos were by far the best part.

Honestly the more I think about it, the more this feels like on of those books N.R. Walker didn’t actually write. They seem to pop up every once in a while. My conspiracy theory for the day!

"You can do this. You can lead us. I’ll follow you anywhere."

The Milvus Files is one of my favorite series so seeing there was a new book coming in this world had me beyond excited. We met Rhett and Jay in the second book which was a little tease of what was to come. And while I liked both guys, enjoyed getting to know their team and thought the writing and plot were top-notch as usual from this author, I didn't love THE TEAM like I did with The Kite and The Bait. It's pretty hard to overthrow my adoration for Harry and Asher who are MY GUYS. And what an absolute treat it was to get so many scenes with them but don't worry if you're not a stan for them like me, they don't take over the story but add to it. All in all this was a solid book with a sweet, heartwarming HEA.

Audio version of course cause Glen Lloyd 😍

Enjoyable, action packed read. Really loved Jay’s character and how he and Rhett really complimented each other. I was hoping we’d get more as far as their history with each other, but do recognize it would have slowed down the pacing in this type of story.

The cameos!!! I will take every glimpse of Asher Garin I can get, please and thank you 🫶🏼

Oh my god… alll my favourite people are in this book. NR Walker writes spectacular thrillers, expect global clandestine ramifications, 4 D chess level politics trying to control the good guys, said good guys beating them at their own game, but some casualties that are heartbreaking none the less.

The Team is mostly told from Rhett (and sometimes Jay’s) perspective - Captain and and Medic whom we met in The Bait. On that note, I do think this can be read as a stand alone but u would say start with Tallowwood, Move on to the Kite , then do The Bait and finally land here - or just start here and enjoy the ride in whatever order you choose to read :)

This one isn’t as high on the romance scale as it is on the thriller, suspense end of the spectrum- and everyone at some point is under suspicion. It starts with two new members from PLA being introduced to Rhett’s team and their first mission tests the fragile balance of the new team being sent to rescue their own. However, there are even bigger things at play, motivations are masked and the team is at risk and Rhett turns to Yunho (and Harry and Asher 🫠)

The found family, rather the forged family theme in this book is spectacular - o loved seeing such fantastic characters and their dynamic like Sid and Azrael, Yin and Chen specially… I hope we see more if them in the coming books.

I loved the epilogue and the outtake and I can’t wait to see what they do next

Expect:

- established couple
- Romantic suspense
- Found family
- Life and death and violence
- Trans rep
- High tension

Highly recommend giving it a go, you won’t regret it.

“You must have the courage to trust your instincts and be ready to question what other people don't. If you do that, you can seize opportunities that others would miss. Believe in yourself, and use everything you can - including the obstacles…” ~ Richard Branson.

Captain Rhett Ouston (Rhett) is the main character in ‘The Team’ by N.R. Walker and leads the most successful mercenary group. He is a strong leader who challenges his team to strive for excellence. Most people see Rhett as demanding and serious, expecting a lot from his team. Only his partner, Jay Lin, sees his caring and passionate side.
When two members of Rhett’s team do not check in on time, the team quickly prepares to find out what happened and, if possible, bring them back safely. To make things more challenging, recently, two new team members have been added, whom he knows nothing about and does not trust. There is no time to explain what to expect by being on their team.
Their mission sends the team to a remote location with instructions to observe a specific building from their designated spot without moving in. As time goes on, Rhett becomes uneasy and starts to doubt the validity of their assignment. Even though it is going to get him in trouble with his boss, Rhett leaves the safe house to check the building himself because he trusts his judgment as a leader. After a while, it becomes clear that someone deliberately sent them to the wrong location to distract them from their intended objective, and that someone must be at Milvus headquarters. If so, who and why?

‘The Team’ is a fantastic follow-up to the Milvus files saga. It is a wild ride of action, adventure, deceit, and loyalty. Rhett is a vibrant character: strong, brave, and a born leader. I adored Jay with his spunk and sense of humor. He keeps Rhett on his toes and gives him a run for his money. Their relationship is dynamic, and their bond is unbreakable. I also enjoyed revisiting other characters in the series, especially Asher and Harry. Seeing that they are well and happy warmed my heart. Thanks, N.R., for a story that often took my breath away.

I LOVED this book. I truly can’t even pinpoint why I enjoyed it so much other than the dynamic of all the characters was just perfect. I’m such a sucker for character cameos and a well written found family, which this series continues to build upon in the best way. I really hope this isn’t the final book in the series, as I can’t imagine not reading more about my favorite Milvus team in the future.

Without spoilers - the addition of two new team members was honestly stressful, exciting, and hilarious throughout the book. One new guy in particular had me laughing out loud more than once. Rhett’s character as the captain was written perfectly. His relationship and dynamic with Jay, the medic, was incredible. I love how bossy Jay is in their relationship, while Rhett has to be the boss every other minute of the day. Perfection. The mission / plot this book centers around was so well researched and written. All the stars to The Team. I hope there’s more to come!

The Team is sent to retrieve Kowlaski and Miles who missed their last check in.
Rhett's team for the mission is expanded by the introduction of 2 Chinese operatives.
The team also become aware that there is a mole in Milvus.
I liked this. Enough adventure without it being over powering and lots of cameos.
Not sure if this is the last adventure for the gang but I hope not.

Rhett and Jay have been together for years, working on secret missions, covert ops, and falling in love. They are apart of the new Milvus division, meant to bring impartiality to the world of secrets. When two new men are added to their team, a series of events kicks off that challenges everything they know.

While Rhett and Jay are an established couple and while we didn't see their love story play out, their dedication and adoration of one another is evident from the very first chapter. They are truly partners in crime, professionals when needed but have their own love language that shows their devotion. Rhett is the best at what he does, leading the team and holding the responsibility. Jay is there for when he needs to rest, when he needs that reassurance that he's doing the right thing. Jay trusts Rhett with everything he has, knowing that with Rhett by his side they can do anything.

The best part was definitely the suspense filled, action packed mission. From the start there's secrets and lies, twists and turns, and just when you think one thing everything changes. There's not one moment where the story lags. Rhett shines in his role a captain, making the hard choices and forcing the hands of higher ups to do what's right and save his team. The whole team has such distinct personalities that worked so well together. I was a little skeptical of Yin and Chen but they were such great additions. These characters brought levity and comfort to the more harrowing situations and worked together seamlessly to come out the other side.

Another really fun part of the story is that Rhett and Jay are helped by our favorite man behind the curtain, Yunho, and ex-kites Harry and Asher. They've formed a unbreakable trust needed in the type of work they do, and you can tell how much each character appreciates having this type of bond. I love that they folded Yin and Chen into this family. They both needed that reassurance and acceptance after everything they went through. I'm not sure what's next for this universe, but I know it'll be a wild ride with the best characters.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

The Team is the third book in N.R. Walker’s fabulous Milvus Files series, a set of high-octane thrillers that I am totally loving. The first two books focus on a different couple, Harry and Asher, who meet Rhett and Jay in book two, The Bait. There are some plot connections and references here to events in the first two books, and their friend Yunho appears as a side character, with Harry and Asher having some cameos. The series also loosely connects to Walker’s Tallowwood, but this third book doesn’t have any crossover with that story.

I think this was an interesting way to continue to develop the series, as the story feels tied in with the first two books, but the focus shifts. We not only have a new couple with Rhett and Jay, but also to a full squad who are working as a team, versus lone wolves Harry and Asher.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

I wouldnt call this a romance. Was more like reading an action movie. Maybe 2% of the book was about the couple. Next to no romance. Next to no spice.

I love that we are back in this world. This group of misfits make a great team to follow on their adventures. A few gunshots, the odd possible world ending danger, and explosions make for a great and fun read. Rhett and Jay are great together. We met them towards the end of The Bait. Rhett channels Harry. A lot. But in a slightly different way because of the team dynamic, rather than the individual. The world of this story is so strong, and there were enough loose ends from the previous novels to have a number of stories develop for this Team. I do hope this is just the start of more.
Glenn Lloyd gives a great performance as always.

A Brilliant Action Packed Thriller

This was a brilliant addition to the Milvus universe. The author took us on an exciting ride through several countries with plenty of intrigue, edge of seat suspense and action and although she also gave us another hot couple and spicy encounters this was primarily an action thriller.

I loved that previous couples appeared in the story and played a part in the outcome and whilst you can read this as a standalone it’s much more enjoyable if you read the other two brilliant books first.

Rhett was Captain of the Milvus Alpha 1 team and the team is full of amazing characters all with unique skill sets and by his side, as he had been since they were eighteen years old, was Jay, the medic in the team and their love, respect and support for one another shone through.

I was so immersed in this story that I couldn’t put it down and before I knew it I had finished! This is always a sign of a book well written and I hope there are more books to come in this series.

Thoroughly enjoyed it and have no hesitation in recommending it.

you won’t out this book down!

This is another remarkable book in the series. It follows the to main characters Jay and Rhett.
I am not going to delve into the storyline more the character development. It isn’t needed.

When you have an extremely strong and complex story that covers miles of the globe, differing countries and their cultures. It could be messy or just an ordinary read that doesn’t leave a mark on you.

What Walker does with storytelling and wraps you into wanting to know what is on the next page. Every up and down in this book has you holding on, wanting to know more. Who is the bad guy, when do they find them. Each twist and turn within sheds light but only a little with a few dead ends. It makes you want to know who is and isn’t the bad guy, the only ones you can rely on are Rhett and Jay with a little light shone from previous main characters from book 1 and 2.

A well written plot and characters who develop further on each page, when love and trust are the only things that matter and gut instinct is your last bastion. Never has this author proved how good they can be with great climax and weaving a story so beautifully.

Rhett Ouston, captain of the Milvus team, thrives in the world of covert operations, performing secret missions and tactical training alongside his partner and the love of his life, team medic Jay Lin. However, the addition of two new members brings doubts and secrets, sending their operations into disarray. Stranded in a hostile country without support from HQ, Rhett struggles with who to trust. When their crucial mission to prevent a global terrorism deal goes horribly wrong, the team's internal trust implodes. Despite the overwhelming challenges and the real threat to his life, Rhett, guided by Jay's advice to "trust your instincts," is determined to make his team succeed.

This story was full of intrigue, action and constantly an ambiguity of who to trust. The action was fast and suitably violent. I loved the relationship between Rett and Jay and how tender the two strong men could be. It was great the way that the men from the first two books were involved in this story. This was easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

I was giddy reading this book it was so good!
No one is going to beat Asher and Harry for me (maybe ever) but I loved Jay and Rhett. It was great getting a team based plot after the solo missions of The Kite and The Bait, and I adored Yin and Chen!

The plot was intense and fast paced, as you would expect from this series. The side characters were fantastic and the little fangirl moment Azrael had with Asher was making me legit laugh.
The cameos were perfect.

I will say this book was definitely way more plot than romance. I loved that they were an established couple and the moments we did get of them were sweet and spicy but there wasn't a lot of them. Again, that's to be expected of this series, it just felt a little less here but I have no major complaints.
I loved it. I'm going to be book hungover for a while.

(The only question I thought was I understand not wanting to send Yin right away to the island, but why jump to Rhett when the team had a SEAL as well? Was a bit weird for me but alas I didn't care I was just here for the vibe at that point.)

It was good to be back in the world of The Milvus Files, where the action is non-stop and takes place around the world. In this story, Rhett and Jay are a long-term couple. Rhett is the Captain of the Alpha 1 Milvus team and Jay is the team's medic. Their cohesive team represents various countries. Two of their members have been kidnapped by bio-terrorists and the mission is to rescue them while stopping a world-wide deadly pandemic. All is not as it seems and there are betrayals and espionage all around. Emotions often flare as lives hang in the balance. The team is also incorporating two new Chinese nationals who, hopefully, are trustworthy. The romance between Rhett and Jay often has to take a back-burner due to the mission, but they sneak in their high-heat times. A great story with some satisfying cameos of previous characters. I can't wait to read what happens next in this world!

Oh Ms Walker - you are seriously good at what you do. As usual you delivered a stand out winner. I have loved this series and it was awesome to meet up with some of the crew from previous series. A deadly toxin, greedy men wanting to corrupt the power they have been given in the worst possible ways. Death means a hefty pay day - lives mean nothing. But you want to play dirty, you gotta be prepared to take on The Team and you need to be prepared. But is all what it seems, or are there traitors in their midst? Who to trust? Lets call Harry and Yuhno ..... As usual I cant verbalise how great this book is, this series is and this writer is. She never puts a food wrong. Can guarantee every book you pick up will challenge you as much as it engages you. Bring on more - please

The Milvus Files-Rhett and Jay

I love this series and I’m so glad that we got Rhett and Jay’s story! They’re an established couple who work together on an elite team of warriors. It’s nice to read about an established couple and see how they make their relationship work. We also get the backstory on how they met and how they’ve made it work for almost a decade. It was good to catch up with Harry, Asher, Yunho and Lucas. The addition of Tao, Chen JunMei made the story intriguing. As usual, the action and mystery will keep you engaged. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. I hope this series continues with more action and mystery. It’s nice to read that the bad guys get their just reward in the end.

I honestly wasn’t sure about this story in the beginning because of the change of characters and the couple already being together. Gotta say the author won me over very quickly! Rhett and Jay are instantly likeable with great chemistry and I loved the rest of the team too. This story has a fast moving plot and tons of action…like the other books in this series it feels like a really good spy movie. I’m hoping for more books set in this world because this author excels at writing this type of story. Five stars.
