In this funny and sweet new book in the bestselling Darth Vader™ series, Eisner Award–winning author Jeffrey Brown offers an intimate look at the friendships between best pals in the Star Wars universe, from Darth Vader and the Emperor to Leia and her Ewok pals, Han and Chewie, C-3PO and R2-D2, the bounty hunters, and other favorite characters. Jealousy, birthday parties, lightsaber battles, sharing, intergalactic rebellion and more all come into play as Brown's charming illustrations and humor irresistibly combine the adventures of our friends in a galaxy far, far away with everyday events closer to home.
Jeffrey Brown was born in 1975 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and grew up reading comic books with dreams of someday drawing them, only to abandon them and focus on becoming a 'fine artist.' While earning his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Brown abandoned painting and began drawing comics with his first autobiographical book 'Clumsy' in 2001. Since then he's drawn a dozen books for publishers including TopShelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, McSweeney's and Chronicle Books. Simon & Schuster published his latest graphic memoir 'Funny Misshapen Body.' In addition to directing an animated video for the band Death Cab For Cutie, Brown has had his work featured on NPR's 'This American Life' His art has been shown at galleries in New York, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and Paris. Jeffrey's work has also appeared in the Best American Comics series and received the Ignatz Award in 2003 for 'Outstanding Minicomic.' He currently lives in Chicago with his wife Jennifer and their son Oscar.
Like a steady and tragic descent to the dark side, running a joke into the ground is something none of these successful novelty book authors seem capable of resisting.
Darth Vader and Son and Vader's Little Princess are still the best ones in the series, but a few gags in this one like Boba Fett throwing pop-corns to Han Solo in a theatre made me laugh a lot.
Because it's imaginative and silly, I had to round out the series. I found far less laugh-out-loud moments in this one and a few pages that I didn't really understand. As Yoda might say: 2.5 I give this.
Star Wars fans will get a kick out of these single-page cartoons that poke fun at Lucas' space opera, including both the original trilogy and the prequels. If you prefer your sci-fi serious and dramatic, this isn't for you; however, those who love to laugh will have a blast with this.
I worship Jeffrey Brown when it comes to his interpretation of Star Wars mixed in with comedy and I have found that every book that he has published reaches above and beyond the 5-Star rating for me but this book I did not feel that spark of enthusiasm. Probably this book is bit too young for me especially since the demographic is for children but I came across pages where it was difficult to understand the jokes so imagine a child who does not know or understand sarcasm to get the punch line of the joke.
This book deals as usual with Star Wars related topics so you get to see Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, and countless other iconic characters in this franchise. Every page is different and there's no plot to the book. I would consider this as a book of jokes because every page features a different character who is making funny commentary, inside jokes that only fans of the Star Wars universe would understand or extremely random moments of nonsense.
I do not know what age range is this book appropriate for children but if your child has seen the Original Trilogy, and they watch the Clone Wars animated show religiously then you are in good hands with this book. There is an inside joke that references about the Clone storm troopers which I found to be hilarious and was laughing close to the point of tears and looking back now I believe that was the only joke that was worth comedy merit.
Most likely if this was an actual story like all of Jeffrey Brown books then this would have gotten a perfect score but since this was a book of jokes meant for children I believe I may avoid similar books in the future. Until next time... May the Force be with you.
This was the first of the three tiny booklets I burned through, featuring Jeffrey Brown’s adorkable versions of Darth Vader and friends. Often funny, nearly always adorable, and exuding love for a galaxy far, far away - borrowed from my local library but I might have to invest in copies all my own.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys adorable comic strips and/or Star Wars.
Rounding up because I still enjoyed the illustrations. However, it was not as funny as the other books and most of it went over my head. Guess I'm not that much into SW then...
Random collection of silly Star Wars cartoons. I really liked the first three books in this series, this one is just too random for me and not as funny as the rest.
første boka i 2018 er sjølvsagt relatert til Star Wars fordi etter at eg såg The Last Jedi har eigentleg heile livet mitt dreia rundt Star Wars, denne var fillen så søt og eigentleg ganske løyen.
Its star warsss and its just so fking cute. You need a break from all the heck in the world read some cute books lol Also great reads for your kids. Or nieces and nephews
This might be the best one of the series. Perhaps the broader scope left more room for creativity, but whatever the reason, this book is a lovely blend of charm and humor. It follows (loosely) the events of the movies in (loosely) chronological order. Very sweet.
Like the others in this delightful series, this book of cartoons is great fun. But be warned: You have to be a real Star Wars geek to get all the jokes!
May the Force be with you!
Friendship is an integral part of the Star Wars Universe, we see it in so many ways. In this delightful comic, Brown takes that idea and highlights some of the most well known, little known, and unexpected friendships in a galaxy far, far, away.
The scenes in this book follow a loose chronological progression from the Prequels through the Original Trilogy. We see Boss Nass saying he would love to be friends with Padme. We see a group of Clone Trooper children talking about how...they really don't know who is who, and can't tell each other apart! Two of my favorite scenes where, one when Vader walks into Mos Eisley Cantina, the Bith band is playing his theme, and all the patron comment on how every time he walks in they play it. The other was when Luke, Han and Chewie, as children, were all playing in a sandbox and Han asks Luke if he think Leia likes him, that really made me smile. On Hoth we saw Leia and Han playing with crayons, all over the boards with the Rebels battle plans. The book ended on such a heartfelt note, as Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie all sat side by side watching the Tatooine suns set.
Each page, each panel was a scene unto itself, and each was characteristically filled with the humor, sarcasm, with and fantastically drawn illustrations we all know and love from Brown. Wonderful book!
There were definitely some laugh out loud moments from the comics in this book, but the collection didn’t strike me as being as strong as Brown’s first two efforts. It’s hard to top the hilarity of Vader’s Little Princess, but clearly as a trouble-causing daughter I’m a bit biased, but I did enjoy the addition of young Lando and Han, and little Chewie to the cast. I found the comics with Han to be the most amusing, not only because young Han isn’t very different than adult Han, but because Vader’s reaction to him as the companion of his children is absolutely spot on - “not that Han Solo kid again!”
