She’s managing her pain by churning out theories, but I can’t take it. Especially not when her theories involve my mistakes.
John can’t get involved, can’t find out what Sallie and I are doing
and it’s not Amy’s fault, I know it’s not, but it can’t be mine. I need someone to blame. I’ll find someone to blame.
"Aunt March handed an opportunity to the wrong sister. Beth hides from life. I’m ready to reach out and take it by the throat."
Aunt March handed an opportunity to the wrong sister. Beth hides from life. I’m ready to reach out and take it by the throat.
“I told her she didn’t deserve it.”
“What if she jumped? What if she jumped because of what I said?”
An idea. A prickle of electricity. Aunt March didn’t give me the opportunity to audition for Plumfield. But maybe she’d give me this. Maybe I just need to ask.
What if Beth went to hang out with them because I told her she’d never done anything exciting?
it feels sick to live the dream that might’ve led her to death.
Dad didn’t kill all four of us. He killed me. Just me. I’ve tried to ask him why, but I can’t find the words. I guess I’m afraid to hear his answer. Afraid he’ll say that I’m flat and lifeless, that he couldn’t envision a future for me.
“She wanted to back out of Plumfield.”
But she would have hated being the center of attention. At least that much is true.
She died after my party.
At once I’m sure. Sallie didn’t host this vigil for attention. She’s trying not to look guilty.
“Maybe not, but if something happened at her party, she might cover it up.”
“What if she’s afraid? What if there was some kind of accident? A fight? What if she’s a witness?”
“What if Beth confronted Sallie about your unbalanced friendship?”
I’m gonna fucking kill you.
“She came home hating Sallie, acting like she didn’t deserve to go to Harvard. I don’t know.” I pause. “Beth was an observer, a listener. What if she overheard something that ended up getting her in trouble?”
“If this gets out, Sallie’s family will protect her. They have lawyers, money, but you’ll be in trouble.”
she’s been anxious lately, insisting that I never work on
her papers at the library or the coffee shop across from our apartment. “Only at
home,” she said. “Only in private.”
No matter what he does, he can’t tell the detectives that he and Beth discussed Plumfield just hours, maybe minutes, before she died. If he does, he’ll have a motive.
“I’m sorry, but it’s true. Beth was never ambitious, but you and I have real
dreams.”
“They matter more than ever.”
...she’s told me time and time again that she wishes she could be
one of us. The fifth March sister.
“We’ve worked too hard to give up now.”
