'New Hart's Rules' is a brand-new text that brings the principles of the old text (first printed in 1893) into the 21st century, providing answers to questions of editorial style for a new generation of professionals.
Compiled by experts, this essential handbook provides all the information you need to write and prepare text for print or electronic publication. This major new edition has been heavily revised and updated and reflects both traditional concerns as well as the ever-expanding influence of new technology on publishing.
Detailed, clear, approachable. Sensible. Does not feel like it is preaching or condescending. Handy in size, practical for the shelf and desk, well organised. I was surprised by how much attention was paid to foreign languages and technical subjects. Comprehensive.
Highly recommended to anyone who cares about writing by the rules. Also highly recommended to those who wish to break the rules, and break them well.
Only about half of the book is a writing guide, which is the stuff I'm interested in; overall, it's more of a handbook for editors and publishers, going into pleasurably OCD detail about spacing, type and punctuation marks. The writing can get unnecessarily lengthy because of the need for sentence completeness and variety. Alarmingly (and ironically), I came across the occasional error such as 'that necklace of her's'.
