I'm happy I found this book while helping navigate friendships with my 3rd grader. I have a better understanding now of what is considered normal at that age and wish I'd had this resource years ago. The sending grade teacher clearly expected her students to act 11 not 8 by these guidelines so that did not help! Unfortunately with COVID and my being immune compromised, my child missed a lot of early social interaction with anyone under the age of 35 and I believe it took a toll. She's neurodivergent as well and I honestly don't always know where she is struggling. This book helped me see that she is a bit behind in some areas but ahead in others. Of course, there are differences and different temperaments, as well, as the author makes clear. It's definitely with the read and I suggest even those of you with young children read this instead of waiting until they see problems later as I did. Of course, this was just published so I didn't have that opportunity, but I highly recommend this resource to every parent.
Parent's Guide: Social Skill Decoded by Dawn C. Graham
I found this to be a wonderful enlightening book with lots of great informations and examples. My son is autistic and and every day we work on social skills with him and there are so many examples of things I had never thought out.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I took so many notes from this book! The exercises are simple to implement and genuine. I am excited to begin using these games and techniques with my children to not only strengthen our relationship but to help them in every aspect of life. It is our job as parents to prepare them for adulthood and this book is the perfect guide for that.
