On the one hand, I like that the Decepticons are not all insanely evil caricatures (other than Shockwave)...on the other, do all of Autobots (except Arcee) have to be such wusses?

The war between Autobots and Deceptiocons continues in classic DWJ style, full of action and emotions. Tensions are high, so are stakes.

This second volume, focuses more on the Transformers, while humans take a back seat. Especially Spike, who's barely in it. I hope that we will see more of him, because i liked his arc in the first volume.

There is a big change here, DWJ still writes the book, but he doesn't do the art anymore. Jorge Corona is the new artist and he does a great job, trying to match Johnson's style. It's not exactly the same, but definitely good enough.

Daniel Warren Johnson hits it out of the park again. The art is stunningly beautiful as it captures the frantic action of the Transformers. As with the first volume, it is clear that there are stakes. No character is safe, so the events of this story feel like they have real meaning. This is a must-read.

EN This one is even better than the previous issue—and that one was already pretty great.

These creators truly know how to make comics. What they’re doing with this franchise is nothing short of amazing, and it just goes to show how rich and full of potential some of these 80s properties still are.

The plot is fantastic, constantly keeping you on edge and eager to find out what happens next.

Daniel is no longer handling the artwork, but honestly, I barely noticed the change at first—which suggests they’re making a real effort to preserve the original style and tone.

I can't recommend this comic highly enough. It’s among the very best the industry has to offer right now.

--

Man, I wish Transformers were real

Daniel Warren Johnson’s run on Transformers continues to be one of the best comic books on shelves. His second arc, where Jorge Corona took over on art, rode the wave of the first 6 issues into a volume that raises the stakes for the Autobots and the people of earth, while staying true to the heart that the first volume so perfectly captured. There were many things that were lost on me here, as I was not a big transformers guy growing up, but despite this the story still makes it’s conflicts clear and precise. The colors are still some of the best in the game (shoutout Mike Spicer, always).

Even if you’re not well versed in Transformers (just as I am not) there is so much fun to be had with these books. They are also, heartbreaking! But I’m a way that despite the sorrow reminds you how beautiful this world and this life can be. Even if our world lacks cool robots.

2024 marks the fortieth anniversary of Hasbro’s Transformers franchise, and considering the fatigue towards it during the last decade, because of Michael Bay’s film series, this year felt like vindication for the fandom. From Studio Trigger’s four-minute anime short that celebrated every incarnation of the franchise, to the underperformed, but terrific animated feature Transformers One, the standout title was Daniel Warren Johnson’s current comic book series as part of Skybound Entertainment’s Energon Universe.

Going back to the GI roots of the franchise, Johnson as writer and artist took the classic premise of Earth becoming the new battlefield for a war between two opposing transforming alien robot armies into a brutal but compelling story about war and family. After the first six issues, Johnson steps away from his art duties with Jorge Corona taking over, but does Johnson keeps up the engaging momentum solely as a writer?

After reclaiming the Ark from the Decepticons, the Autobots are still in a rough patch where they still don’t have enough Energon to rebuild their friends or themselves for that matter, whilst their alliance with the few humans they know are on rocky ground. As for the Decepticons, Soundwave has had enough of Starscream’s skills as a leader and decides to overrule him and as they plan their next venture of returning to their home planet of Cybertron, this will determine the fate of both worlds.

While Earth remains the primary setting with Optimus Prime tries his best to be the leader his fellow Autobots are hoping, as well as the unlikely hero to this whole new world, we do see other characters whose lives are affected by the current war on Cybertron, such as the Autobot Elita-1 who has been through the worst. The few pages set on Cybertron could easily be a platform for many Easter eggs and sure, there are characters that G1 fans will react like Leonardo DiCaprio, but they are presented here as victims of war.

Although the Autobots are good and the Decepticons are evil, Johnson does present them as clean-cut with some Decepticons may not be entirely on board with their violent approach towards humanity or even their own race. Some of the Autobots may not be on board with Optimus Prime as a leader who is always about equal rights, even if he does have to make the tough decision of choosing what is his true home between the two worlds.

Johnson’s run may be the most humane in depicting the Transformers themselves, but the story does not negate the human characters who are just as compelling. First off, you have Carly who is so hell-bent on revenge against the Decepticons that Autobots such as Arcee and Cliffjumper are trying to comfort her, even she if she hates the latter for not killing Starscream who killed her father. As for Spike, now a paralysed orphan, distances himself from the Autobots, only to meet Beachcomber who having experienced war, chooses a life of pacifism, but Spike realises he can’t run away from his world is at stake.

Considering that Johnson left such a strong artistic impression during the previous volume, it is a daunting task for anyone to take over. Jorge Corona’s art may not be as polished as Johnson’s, but along with colourist Mike Spicer, there are similar aesthetics carried over. Going bigger than before with the number of characters being thrown in explosive set-pieces including a climax that is not far off from Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the busyness can be too much, but the action is impactful and the emotion gets across what these giant mechanical beings are going through.

After twelve issues, we are now halfway through Daniel Warren Johnson’s excellent run of Transformers, which is not that concern in tying with the other titles of the Energon Universe. At the end of this volume, questions are raised, as well as a possible seismic shift with the Transformers’ presence on Earth. Once again, this continues to be the most exciting thing to ever come out of the toy-based franchise in recent years and I’m excited to see where it goes.

What a huge story, too big for one book. The artwork is good, but like the story, there is so much going on that it is difficult to get everything into a panel.

The Autobots finally have the advantage over the Decepticons. However, they do not have the energon to repair their numbers or mount an offensive. The Decepticons, however, have another new leader who has no problem exploiting Earth's resources and reigniting/reuniting the war back on Cybertron. Where will Optimus Prime's loyalties lie to his new home or his old home?

This is blast and brawl for it all. Old allies on both sides return, and the war on both worlds will reach breaking points. It will be interesting to see where things go from here, especially with the GIJOE crossover.

I love DWJ, but this is so very confusing. The robots are so hard to keep the names straight, and they all kind of look the same when they are crashing and smashing with explosions all over the place.

One other thing I noticed is that there aren't many, if any, text boxes or thought bubbles, so it's quite difficult to get into the characters' heads or connect with any of them. The last issue hits pretty hard, though, and overall, I liked the story here. Hopefully I enjoy the next volume more.

The artwork is good…. reminds me of how Transformers was drawn in the Marvel days, but the action is a little muddy and hard to decipher at times.
The writing is fine….. dialogue flows and it tells the story well enough.
The overall plot is lacking for this volume though. Events escalate too quickly, and the character development is not very deep.
I also wish they would reconsider using yellow text on blue background for when Soundwave speaks. It hurts my eyes to read it.

Finished 9/11/24 - Gripping, emotional, and important. That's how I would describe Johnson's Transformers series so far. Skybound's Energon Universe is stacking up to be quite the spectacle, bringing in many new and returning comic-readers, but this current run of Transformers is by far the strongest. While there are still a lot of questions and loose ends left unanswered by the end of issue 12, the gut-wrenching emotion going through Elita-1 in the final pages will stick with me for months--Jorge Corona does a spot on job continuing Johnson's flare for this second arc of the series.

As a Transformers fan I am eating really good this year, and I cannot wait to devour this continuing series.

Transformers continues to be a WILD fucking ride.

This time we take a small break to give a breather for everyone to regroup. But soundwave doesn't like that idea and wants to take earth for all its resources. But first he messes with Prime again, this time having the advantage, and kidnaps two of his people.

This volume heals with heavy PDST, torture, death, and grieving. The ending is truly heartbreaking, and this entire series is non-stop action packed, fucked up war, ride and I can't stop reading. Easily the best transformers media ever.

Still a really great read, but the decision to rely on such murky art that makes it hard to tell various Transformers apart is so weird. Maybe at least make word bubbles different colors? Also, there is a lot of backstory here that isn't explained very well and makes part of the story hard to follow.

The first Transformers volume featured a hard drop into the Transformers universe, and this second volume presses down on the accelerator. If you thought the first volume was confusing, just you wait.

We get more Transformers, more settings, more timelines, and (as you might expect) more big, crunching battles. The action is packed and the character moments are few. I mostly grasped what was going on (), though I doubt I could name all the players at this point. The human characters are pretty much left by the wayside, sadly.

There's a cliffhanger conclusion () with a big, exciting explosion/sacrifice... though, looking back, I don't really know what happened or why it mattered. Still, I guess I'll keep reading for all the metallic body slams.

Somehow this is more brutal and sad than volume 1. Daniel Warren Johnson continues to impress with a lot of deft character touches to keep our cast distinct (Astrotrain being my favourite this arc) and the general uncertainty over who will survive and what will be left of them physically and emotionally makes it quite a draining read. But it's excellent stuff. The shadow of everyone's favourite arch villain waiting to return (and reclaim his arm 😉) keeps investment up imo. Looking forward to volume 3 and beyond...

Another remarkable volume by Daniel Warren Johnson, who’s scope and sense of tension and danger continues unabated. New characters like Elita the battle scarred commander, cliffjumper the pacifist and shockwave the sadist - all provided complex interiority and stupendous visual storytelling of their own - add to the moral questions this series clearly prides itself on. It’s too bad DWJ couldn’t keep drawing the series but after a warm up issue Jorge Corona adapts to the feel and flow of the series, with great moments of his own.

We have to wait until June for the next book??

Joe...

Debated between a 4 and 5 star and Jorge Corona’s art pushes this to a 5 for me. The stakes are even higher in volume two. I love what DWJ is doing with transformers in the shared universe and looking forward to volume 3.

I am absolutely loving this! This reminds me of why I fell in love with these characters as a kid. The action is spectacular. the Decepticons go to extreme lengths to achieve their goals. The Autobots struggle with balancing their quest to protect themselves and homework but also maintain their "humanity". There were so many great moments in this volume from Carly to Spike to Elita. Beachcomber has a good one too. I could keep going on but I just want to read the next one. The two people in front of me on Libby need to hurry up sparkdamn it!
