This was the first time I have actually listened or read one of this series, despite being a huge mystery lover for years. I listened to the audiobook version of it and was surprised by the variety of narration throughout the book. Each short story had great narration that was very appropriate for the form of the story, and those of us who listen to many books know what a difference it can make.
The stories were written and definitely had some unexpected moments or endings in them. I enjoyed the collection a lot, but it was a little too much in modern era for me. I’m very much a historical fiction lover. Still, it’s worth reading or listening to for some different stories and to get new authors content.

As a lover of short stories and mystery, I was excited to receive an advanced listener copy of The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2025. It contains twenty short mystery/suspense stories selected by Don Winslow, known for his crime novels. Each story has its' own narrator which made for engaging listening. Like any collection of stories, each person will have their favorites, the ones that were just okay, and the ones that were a miss. The range of topic, characters, and setting for each story is wide and I found myself looking forward to hear what the next story would be about. The majority of the stories skewed dark, so I appreciated the moments of comic relief in a few of the stories.
