The deeper they delve, the higher the stakes.

Harald and the Throne Hunters have ascended—stronger, sharper, and far more dangerous. But so too have their enemies. With the Fallen Angel's dungeon twisting into stranger shapes, and Flutic spiralling toward open war, the crew must decide what they stand for… and what they’re willing to sacrifice.

Old ghosts rise. Alliances fracture. And the Twilight Crown has begun to whisper.

Victory may grant power beyond imagining.

But only if they survive.

This series doesn’t disappoint. I enjoy the pressure the author keeps on the lead character and can’t wait to find out what’s really up with the angels and demons. I feel like next book there will be lots of revelations. For now, the ending was so satisfying, def a great installment.

What this book feels like
1 It’s finally picking up pace once again
2 I was not ready for the book to be over, I got ghost-book-syndrome for days
3 I’m so curious about what’s really going on with these demons and angels
4 I’m glad we know it’s a book and that our heros can’t really do some things or...

In a nutshell
I’ve read some other reviews, and while it’s true that sometimes it can get a bit all over the place with intentions, it’s truly a wild ride, and books go down like candy.

It’s also a special series to me because, not only was the first book released on my birthday, but it kinda started a mental and physical self-improvement timeline for me too (not as insane as the protagonist, I received no demon seed, just anti-anxiety meds 😂)

The second book in the series slowed down a bit too much maybe, but now we are about to push down the gas pedal and go spiraling from here! Can’t wait!

Harald is a man of light and darkness.
His waking mind is spent in the sunlight, but his actions are guided by his nightself.
He fears that self who guides his actions, and struggles against him, but for Nessa he was willing to embrace that darkness so as to free her.

You don’t need help learning to devour your foes, no - what you need is help so that you don’t destroy your friends, yourself, and everything around you.

Acknowledging it, thinking of it outside of you, is the first step in gaining some measure of control. If you’re furious, seeing red, simply being able to say to yourself ‘I am feeling fury,’ lessens its grip on you. You are not the fury. You are feeling furious. Externalize that murderous rage, that hateful passion, see it in your mind’s eye, and you remove yourself a step from its influence.

If you really like this genre, maybe 4 stars. If you don’t, then 1. For me, starting to see author as litrpg equivalent of James P Hogan, the SF writer. Decent enough plots/settings, but one-dimensional cardboard characters.

great ride

So much fun. Hard to put it down and I didn’t want to finish it but felt compelled to finish reading. Frustrated that it’s over but that was amazing.

Feel like I need a cigarette.

Throne Hunters 3

Now that was an ending I didnt envision! Now this felt like a book ending I wanted with book 2- which I still thoroughly enjoyed! (I wish I had book 4 cause I'd start it right now at 11:15 PM). Harry my boy, will you ever stop growing? I'm excited to see how the arcs of Nessa, Vic, and Sam continue. I hope Sam becomes less insufferable. She always wanted to be dungeon delver but bulks when Harald let's his inner demon loss in the dugeon... i like her as an overall character and I get why she's written that way but it's a tad hypocritical but likes she says, she's working on healing. Wigram and Vic, and duo I hope continues to interact in future books!

Throne Hunters 3

These books are starting to get really fun, but at the same rate the plot holes are starting to show through. Phil Tucker is one of the best at writing action and progression. The fights always make sense, are cool, have problem solving, and are memorable. And he's juggling all the crazy rules in his LitRPG system pretty well. And I actually like the characters more now that series is spending less time learning about them. Too bad the Throne Hunters is still super generic and full of plot points that stretch believability past the breaking point.

As I expected this is the book where Phil ran out of time to spend on character work because the plot is starting to pump. Harald shifts into full murderer and starts butchering humans. In a lot of cases it's not necessary for him to kill people to achieve his goals but he goes out of his way to murder dozens of guards who are so much weaker than him that they can't even fight back. Previous books would have spent a bunch of time having everyone discuss his bloodlust and have interventions, but there's just no time left in this series so everyone just goes with it. Then later there's a couple chapters where Harald inexplicably decides to get rid of the demon seed at the cost of all his powers. Not nearly enough time is shown explaining how Harald came to this decision, but he acts sincere about it. As a reader you can't take it seriously because 1. This obviously won't happen because he's the main character and 2. This makes absolutely no sense for his character. Harald would never do this. He doesn't care about his own soul, he just wants to get stronk and save the city.

I'm annoyed that none of the training the team did in the first couple books matters. They state that none of the sword forms and basic exercise are relevant anymore now that they all have superpowers and mostly fight monsters. That's fine and makes sense, but almost all of the runtime of book 1 and 2 was extremely detailed discussion of exercise and sword training. The author did a ton of research into sword fighting and training and it shows, however, the sword stuff is now entirely irrelevant, so why did we spend so freaking much time on it?!

There's some iffy worldbuilding here as well. Why is the most dangerous weapon in Flutic being held by the weak pervert character? It's made pretty clear that all the houses want to use the Twilight Crown to take over the world and will kill Harald to accomplish that. So why didn't they just kill the pervert guy and take it from him? Pervert guy was so weak that anyone could have taken it from him. Why did the city entrust him with the nuclear codes? None of this makes sense and the more you think about it the worse it is.

Throne Hunters 4 (including this review here since there isn't a goodreads page for it yet)

More of the same, see previous reviews on this series. Throne Hunters is still a fun litRPG with a generic setting and plot points that stretch believability.

I've never read a book that changed it's mind this often. Every single chapter it feels like the team is trying for a completely different goal. First they wanna take over the world with the crown. That doesn't work so they wanna take it to the angel. That is confusing so then they just go dungeon hunting. Then they take a break to get more demon/angel seeds. Then they wanna save the poor and restructure the government. Then they give up on that and wanna just kill the nobility. Then they give up on that and decide to just leave them the crown and dip. Then they decide to stick around and fight people. Then they decide to leave the crown and dip again. It's like the author changed his mind on the plot every time he sat down to write.

The romance is pretty underbaked. Before now the author was avoiding harald+sam because of the weird slave master relationship and wanted to have Sam work through her issues. But now I guess we're dropping that plotline, because they kissing. There had been several chapters of Harald being interested in the Countess, but maybe we're just dropping that too? The countess' character is the most underdeveloped because she joined the group after the author ran out of time for character work. It's only fights and plot from here on out. Also I'm weirded out that any women like the male characters in this book. All of the men used to pretty openly and regularly visit brothels. That is disgusting, but seems to be a non-issue for all the women.

Good for Phil for starting out the book by having the crew decide to take over the world using the Twilight Crown. Didn't work out but that was fun for a minute. Also really liked how Vic immediately asked for a Demon seed. Very in character.

There's a lot of moralizing in this book about how they need to fix society and tear down the royal houses because the people are suffering. But we've never really seen people suffering except in Vic's flashback. They mentioned there's a depression on, but everyone we've met is doing great. So it falls flat when Vic starts suggesting they murder the rich to help the poor. The only real problem we've seen with society is that slavery magic bonds exist, why aren't we fighting that?

Demon seeds and Angel seeds. Why is everyone trusting the angel folk? They seem just as evil as the devils. And they're clearly the same type of beings since they both give out the very similar seeds. The Throne Hunters keep asking the angels why they aren't helping the poor and needy and the angels just don't answer. I'm 99% sure the author is making angels look evil on accident and they will still mostly be the good guys in the end. But it would be fun if it was revealed later that they are all just as evil/uncaring about humanity as the demons.

The power level differences are still dumb. The group has gotten stronger but seem to have made zero progress towards the type of power the heavy hitters have. The Hammerfell woman can kill a hundred ostriches with a single attack, but the whole Harald crew still struggles with an individual ostrich. This series is only planned for 6-7 books and everyone is still weak as heck. They have pissed off everyone in the world and it just makes no sense that they are still alive. One of the dozens of gold rankers or the inquisition or the angels or the demons should have killed them by now. Just makes no sense that they haven't yet. The worst example so far is in this book when the inquisition, Seraphina, and an actual angel come together. All of them want Harald dead, all of them are infinitely powerful, but somehow he survives the encounter. As a reader there is zero tension because obviously they are living through this. It just makes no sense. It happens again in the final scene. All the nobles want Harald dead, but he claims he left the crown in the garden so they let him leave. All of them wanted him dead. He murdered many of their friends and children. But they just let him leave. And when someone comes to stop him Lady Hammerfell comes out of nowhere to save him. Why does she even like Harald? Because they had tea once? This makes so little sense.

A lot of the problem comes from the fact that Harald has no powerful human allies. Other prog fantasy like cradle has them join houses for a time because it's logically the only way to survive. Harald decided not to do that because he's an idiot, and now the plot has to twist itself in knots to keep him alive.

Sounds like it'll be a while before book 5. I still want to know what the "down below" is. The inquisitors mentioned the real battle going on there. Does the dungeon have a reverse Draculas' castle?

A wonderful story

I don't often write reviews anymore, but this series was one that really stood out to me and I couldn't help but share. This is truely a human story delving into how we go about facing our demons. It's true that there was a lot of good action, but what really made this a good book to me was the depth of the characters, and the rawness of their interactions. Rarely have a read a book so balanced. I also love Phil Tucker's series The Immortal Great Souls, but I feel like this series has better. It was a truely wonderful story. Naturally, this is my own personal experience and I wouldn't expect others to get the same enjoyment, but I would 100% recommend reading. I wish the author and future readers the best.

Oh Harald, that slope just got more slippery

Yup, you guessed it. Harald has even more to keep him headed down the path of temptation. He also seems to have some tools to help himself handle that, but I think our boy is going to really get into some dark shenanigans(even more than the ones in this book)! What a ride! Whew.

Great series!

Really enjoying this series! The characters are flawed but interesting, and the magic system is fun.

The storyline keeps getting better and watching the MC wrestle with his powers and morality is really interesting.

Can’t wait for the next one!
