I enjoyed this book immensely. As with his other books that I have read (A Man's Life, Eclipsed, Only in America) Mr. Holland takes you on a trip. Slow to get started but then I found I couldn't put it down (or rather close the screen as they are e-books) Plus all the proceeds from this book go to the Anthony Nolan a charity that helps match up blood cancer patients with folk who match blood types. Win Win.
When I first started this book, I was a little bit worried because I don’t play golf and I only understand its basic rules. My grandpa used to be a golfer, though, so I wanted to give the book a chance. First off, the author added a glossary of common golf terminology at the beginning, which I found terribly useful. So thanks for that. All in all, it was an easy read and a feel good book. By chapter 3, I was hooked. And around chapter 10, it got really, really interesting. I did sometimes find it too golf specific and would definitely recommend it to people who love to play golf or can easily picture a golf round. Could also maybe be a great present for a golf lover in your life. Gotta admit the author does a great job mixing the action happening throughout the golf round with the life and situations happening simultaneously to side-characters. All in all, making it a fun experience and an easy read. 10/10 Would recommend.
I'm not a golfer, and I was hesitant to read a book about such, but had been reliably informed that I could read this novel without the need of any background knowledge. Spot on. A warm, funny and good hearted story that picks up pace as the book develops. It's one of the kindest and happiest books I've read in a long time and to find out that the profits from this work all go to the Anthony Nolan trust is wonderful and quite touching. This is the third book I've read of Dominic Holland recently, having admired his observational wit from the Guardian some years ago. His writing remains sharp but friendly, I couldn't recommend his books more.
At first I was skeptical about reading this as I know nothing about golf but the money was going towards a good cause and I’d recently started up a book club society at my university to immerse myself in other genres. And I must say- I’ve never read a book where the protagonist shits themself before the first chapter. Made me laugh throughout and kept me on my toes; while I usually I’m good at predicting plot twists I just couldn’t see where this one was going! I also know nothing about golf and yet not even halfway through the book I had my fingers crossed for Ricky to hit a birdie or even an eagle. 10/10, also works as a great way to avoid uni coursework.
A great book for a great cause!! Open Links is the latest edition of this book by Dom Holland. It is a great story and you don't have to know about golf to thoroughly enjoy it.
Dom takes you through the highs and lows of a day in the life of a golf tournament. It makes you laugh and makes you stop and think. How many books do just that?
Definitely one to sit down, read and enjoy or pack in your bag for a holiday read whilst supporting The Anthony Nolan Foundation.
I’ve read every book by Dom so far, but I’m no golfer and this held me off slightly. I was so wrong to wait! You don’t need to be into golf or even know anything about golf to enjoy this book. It’s genuinely hard to put down once you start. It’s magical. Somehow Dom has nailed the ability to capture the true meaning of ‘feel good’ and ‘heartwarming’. Even better, this book is for a wonderful charity. Don’t hesitate due to the golf element. Dive in and you won’t be disappointed.
"Open Links" by Dominick Holland is a really buzzy read. It's all about golf, but you don't need to know anything about golf - I certainly didn't. The book's totally full of humour, and it's a right page-turner. Holland keeps it simple, but the characters and story pull you right in. The best part? Buying the book helps a charity working on blood cancer. So, not only good fun to read, but you're doing a good deed too. Well worth the time, I reckon. Two thumbs up from me!
I really loved this book, even though I have no knowledge of, nor any interest in, golf. It's a heartwarming story with a "Happy Gilmore" vibe. The humour, particularly in the early part of the book, reminded me of the Porterhouse Blue book by Tom Sharpe, which I enjoyed many years ago. I guessed the twist at the end but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. And the fact that all profits from this book go to the Anthony Nolan charity just makes the 'feel good' factor even stronger.
Absolutely loved this book! I was laughing by myself and people looked at me confused but it was worth it 😂 Never played golf before and didn't know the rules, but I felt included nevertheless, since everything was explained. Perhaps I found a new hobby? Also loved how it was linked to the Anthony Nolan Charity; such a beautiful story...
Open Links is an immensely readable, engaging tale of a journeyman, professional golfer. One doesn’t need to be a golf enthusiast to enjoy this very human story of persistence and triumph over adversity. Holland manages to combine humour with tension to create an unputdownable narrative with universal appeal.
I can't play golf (literally, I once hit two kids three holes over at mini putt) - but I know a great read when I find one!
"Open Links" is easily the best feel good read of the year. Dominic Holland did an amazing job creating incredible characters and a story that will be very hard to forget.
Was sceptical reading this book as I know absolutely nothing at all about golf. I was however swayed by the books proceeds going to such an incredible cause. I’m absolutely in awe of how this novel was able to take all of my focus an amazing story and I have already been and will continue to be recommending this. Simply could not put it down.
I was unsure whether I would enjoy a book on a golf tournament that I've never played golf. Yet, I found myself unable to put the book down until I had finished it. Moreover, it managed to bring a smile to my face and a sense of peace.
A very enjoyable read whether you follow golf or not. Funny at times, moving at others, the action occurs over one day and keeps you involved. All of the characters are relatable, especially young Ben, who I think steels the show. Highly recommended.
Such a great book…I do love my golf and was drawn to the book by the subject matter. However, this is about much more than golf and has so many surprises and twists and turns, that it will appeal to anyone with a sense of humour ….and a heart. Can’t wait to read again
An amazing piece of literature, invokes a number of different emotions and has such a wonderful message behind it. Well written and definitely a worthwhile purchase and read
A fast paced, easy, compulsive, feel good, fairy story. The good guys shine, bad guys get their just desserts and the World seems a better place for a while. (& I know nothing about golf, or ever wanted to, but this storyline is ‘on par’ for sure)!
