Reckless Devotion offers readers an opportunity to journey deeper into the heart of God daily, accompanied by Rolland and Heidi Baker's insights, which stem from a deep intimacy and dependency on Jesus.
This book is filled with profound, inspirational truths that affirm our identity as beloved children of God and encourage us to go deeper with Him - trusting Him more radically, taking more risks in faith, and living life to the full. Every seventh day, a Come Closer entry summarises the week's thoughts and helps readers to engage with the truths they have learned and apply them to their own lives.
Heidi Baker PhD is a Christian missionary and with her husband Rolland Baker are founders of Iris Global and the author of several books.
With her husband Rolland, Heidi founded IRIS Ministries in 1980, a non-profit Christian ministry dedicated to Jesus and service, especially among the poor. After twelve years ministering in Asia, they left in 1992 to do their PhD's at King's College London, UK. In 1995 they started a new ministry to the poor and homeless children in Mozambique.
Love the way Heidi has lived her life following God. She shares from her own experiences and encourages to love Jesus more and commune with the third person of Godhead- the holy spirit!!!
I'm not going to lie. I bought this book because of the cover and the title. I was attracted to the idea of being recklessly devoted to God and how that could be displayed in my life. After going through this year-long devotional book, I must say I'm disappointed.
First and foremost, the book heavily leans towards the charismatic side of the Church. As I do not find myself in that "camp", many of the devotions fell flat for me, and some I downright disagreed with (expecting/needing miracles, etc.). I appreciated the candor in which the book is written, but there are definitely times when the authors have an agenda, and come across as defensive when describing their beliefs.
I do like that some of the devotions challenge the "stuffy intellectual" in all of us, but I found that the more I read, there wasn't much depth beyond their "bare-bones" message.
Favorite Passage:
"If our ministry is not born out of the wellspring of relationship, if it is not birthed in compassion, let it die."
I loved this devotional. Both Rolland and Heidi wrote their own pages in this devotional and they used their own reflections in their experiences of ministry and life to share how captivating and great God's love really is.
I found each day gave me plenty of inspiration to reflect upon and I look forward to reading it through again in 2019.
