I first discovered this author through her Timeless series (which I love). The characters are so dynamic and the stakes feel super high each time.
I don’t know what happened here, but i had the hardest time connecting with the characters and the story didn’t really hold my attention. Arran spent so much time pushing Eleanor away but then he would also pine for her if he got the sense she would move on. I don’t know what Eleanor saw in him to be honest because he was very wishy washy with her.
Part of my problem I think is that this couple fell in love 4 years prior to the action of this book. Therefore, we don’t get to see their feelings for each other develop and their connection was a bit dull as a result.
The plotline was a somewhat confusing and maybe that’s my fault for not knowing enough about the source material but I had a hard time following along.
I would definitely recommend the Timeless series over this one.

1815 Lord Selkirk’s Colony of Assiniboia (current day, Manitoba, Canada)
There is no doubt that Gabrielle Meyer can write. There’s also no doubt that she does her history research. I love that. She takes actual historical events, uses many of the accurate characters, but also tells the story around fictional characters who help us understand the history at that time.
Lady Eleanor Brooke and Arran MacLean are two of those characters. Three years before there had almost been an understanding between them, certainly there was attraction and a desire for more. But Lady Eleanor’s father was in dire financial straits due to some serious mismanaging. So the only way to save everything was for her to marry into wealth. Well, Arran MacLean was not the person to help her father with this. His life was to assist in managing a new colony in the New World, which was financially unsound. So whatever plans they may have desired were squashed. Arran went to Canada and Eleanor stayed behind and Arran worked hard to forget her.
After her father was sent to prison for life, she had nothing left. Her cousin’s husband was Lord Selkirk, who was financing the colony in Canada so she decided to go to be the school teacher for this colony. Arran didn’t know she was coming so what a shock it was when he’s assisting the newest landing party and Lady Eleanor steps off the boat.
Not to mention that she was a lady from aristocracy, so all the female colonists felt they needed to avoid her. How was she ever going to be an effective teacher if parents and children felt they couldn’t be a part of her life? Something had to give, something had to bring them together.
There were so many ups and downs in this book I was reeling. But honestly, it kept my attention all the way through. Absolutely fascinating.
And of course, Miss Meyer always brings a faith element into her books that is intelligently done. Very, very good.

Where do I even start?
This story was so tender, so lovely, and so exquisitely written. Another amazing story in the Ladies of the Wilderness series!

Eleanor is brave, beautiful, cares deeply for others especially children. I love the tender way she takes care of the baby in this story (not her own).
Arran MacLean is strong, also brave, kind, and wants what is best for the colonists he has come to know in The Red River Valley. Not to mention hard-working and Scottish.
When one of the leaders makes a decision that will affect them all, things quickly escalate.
I really fell in love with these characters—Arran, Eleanor, Miriam, James, and many other side characters. The things they went through tested their loyalty, their compassion, and their wits. I loved watching them grow throughout the story.
I was enthralled with how things would resolve and had a difficult time putting the book down.
I appreciated the author’s note with this one and was horrified by the historical events that occured. I had never heard this bit of history and was fascinated to learn about it. I definitely want to do some of my own research regarding those events.
I already can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy, once Gabrielle puts them up in her Etsy shop.
I highly recommend this one. It is going on my top reads of the year!

"Good night, Lady Eleanor." For the first time since that long-ago evening in St. Mary's Isle, when he had asked her to marry him, Arran reached out and put his hand on her arm.
The touch was feather-soft, and lasted only a moment, but the feeling lingered long after he dropped his hand.
"I'm sorry I dinna welcome you properly when you came. I mean to right that wrong. This place might not be easy or safe for you, but you are needed and wanted. And I long to be friends, because I care about you. I always have and I always will."
This was an absolutely stunning and captivating read. I found the history fascinating and the characters compelling. Before this series I knew almost nothing about Canada's history and I cannot wait to discover more! I really appreciate how Gabrielle Meyer seeks to tell as unbiased an account as possible, recognizing that there are different sides to every story and heroes and villains on both sides. This story centeres around the Red River colony that would eventually become Winnipeg, and the trials and triumphs that shaped it.
In the midst of the story were Lady Eleanor and Arran MacLean, former lovers separated by misunderstanding and tragedy, reunited when Eleanor joins the colony four years after Arran left to help establish it. She arrives amidst conflict, suffering, and later a violent and shocking attack. Eleanor is a woman of noble birth and faces prejudice as she seeks to establish a school as well as a place for herself apart from her past. Arran carries the burden of the colony and believes it is no place for a lady, and that there is no longer a place for her in his heart. But Eleanor's kindness and determination, Arran's honorable heart, and the perseverance of their community through hardship and suffering may just allow them to forge something new.
I loved Arran and Eleanor, as individuals and together. Both had experienced great tragedies, yet still fought to overcome and believe for something better. There was plenty of tension and some misunderstandings and stubbornness, especially in Arran's initial desires to send Eleanor away in an attempt to keep her safe. But his desires were understandable and I appreciated that he communicated with her and was not heavy-handed or forceful to make her do what he wanted. I could understand and empathise with if not always agree with the characters choices. And their love story was such a tender and deeply moving journey. The last 50% of the book kept me absolutely riveted - I binged it in an afternoon - and the ending left me completely satisfied. Stunning romantic historical fiction!

This book was good but it wasn’t my favorite. I had really high expectations going into this story, I loved “The Fur Trader’s Lady” and that one is still on the top of the list for books by Gabrielle Meyer. There were some parts of the book I didn’t enjoy like the miscommunication in the beginning. There was also a lot of death. It felt like the death of one character in particular actually made the plot weaker. I also wish that Arran would have gone after what he loved instead of letting fear get in the way, it didn’t match the way the author had built up his character.
I did enjoy Eleanor and Miriam. The women in this story were brave, strong, and faithful. Also, Fiona and Old John were great side characters in the book. The setting was beautiful and the historical part of the story was interesting to read.

Analysis: Somehow Gabrielle’s romances just keep getting better and better! I absolutely adored Arran and Eleanor in this second book of the Ladies of the Wilderness Series. If you’re new to this series, expect the same writing style that you’ll find in Gabrielle’s Timeless Series, but a totally new setting and history. I love the unique lens into the North American Wilderness and the rich historical detail. There are some heavy and intense scenes in this book, but the story is gripping and will have you rooting for Arran and Eleanor’s happy ending. (And Arran is just dreamy 😍) I also love how the faith just flows through the lives of the characters seamlessly. There’s a lot of hardship to be had, but there’s a focus on the faithfulness of a good God and the hope he brings. If you want swoon-worthy romance, real characters, and organic faith, this is definitely a book for you to check out!

“What is a life, if it’s not spent well, on things that truly matter?”
Life wasn’t easy in the Red River Colony near Lake Winnipeg in 1815. Not only is the land brutal, but the times are heartbreaking and dangerous. It’s very apparent that Gabrielle Meyer has done her research to bring the reader a tender story, full of hardship, hope, reality, and joy.
Eleanor regrets turning Arran down years ago and finds her way back into his presence to hopefully see a different outcome with their relationship. Now a ready-made mother, she is determined to set up a school in the colony, reconnect with Arran, and find her place in the world, yet faces many trials and opposition.
I really enjoy historical fiction because not only am I given facts and circumstances, but the characters planted into these scenes come to life, allowing me to fully appreciate and realize the wide range of the time told about. Meyer is a fantastic storyteller and permits her characters to flourish, drawing the reader right into the book. This tale is real, raw, and a bit more coarse than her other books, but it also paints a vividly realistic picture that invited me to connect.

Gabrielle Meyer has done it again with The Lady of Red River Valley! Set against the rugged backdrop of the Canadian wilderness in 1815, this story pulled me in with its rich historical detail and deeply moving characters. I always love how naturally the gospel is woven into her writing—it feels authentic and powerful without ever being forced.
Eleanor and Arran’s love story is beautifully written—heartfelt, swoon-worthy, and full of longing, regret, and redemption. Their journey through hardship, danger, and second chances had me fully invested from beginning to end. The characters felt so real and relatable, and the emotional stakes were high in all the best ways.
This book is a compelling mix of romance, faith, and survival, and I couldn’t put it down.

Such a well written book. Gabrielle Meyer really does her research. This book was filled with sadness and hope. Lots of adventure where at times I didn't know if the main characters would survive.

Canadian History was never this good when I was taught it in school! I have to admit it didn't catch me as much as the first one but I will definitely continue onto the third one in this series.

Don’t you love it when a book makes you feel all the things—heartache, hope, and pure joy?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another amazing book in Gabrielle Meyer’s Ladies of the Wilderness series!
I loved The Lady of Red River Valley for so many reasons, but most of all for the rich history that Meyer so beautifully brought to life. Her research and storytelling blend seamlessly, immersing you in the time period without ever feeling heavy-handed.
The second-chance romance was such a delight. While I expected a happily ever after, there were so many moments where I genuinely wasn’t sure how—or if—the two main characters would get there. The emotional highs and lows kept me deeply invested, from scenes of heartbreaking intensity to moments of encouragement and joy.
The gentle faith thread woven throughout added a sweetness and hope that left me smiling long after I turned the final page. Gabrielle Meyer has once again delivered a beautifully crafted story full of heart, history, and healing. Fans of historical romance won’t want to miss this one!

I loved The Lady of Red River Valley for so many reasons, but most of all for the rich history that Meyer so beautifully brought to life. Her research and storytelling blend seamlessly, immersing you in the time period without ever feeling heavy-handed.
The second-chance romance was such a delight. While I expected a happily ever after, there were so many moments where I genuinely wasn’t sure how—or if—the two main characters would get there. The emotional highs and lows kept me deeply invested, from scenes of heartbreaking intensity to moments of encouragement and joy.
The gentle faith thread woven throughout added a sweetness and hope that left me smiling long after I turned the final page. Gabrielle Meyer has once again delivered a beautifully crafted story full of heart, history, and healing. Fans of historical romance won’t want to miss this one!

You guys, if you haven’t read anything from @gabrielle_meyer then you are MISSING OUT! She has become one of my all time favorite, will read anything she writes authors. And this book is GORGEOUS- inside and out. (I mean, are you even kidding me with that cover?!)
This book has sooo many feels, and it will take you on a journey. Her history is always incredibly accurate, and it is devastating what people had to endure back then. I count myself so lucky to have all the modern conveniences that we do. Eleanor was an incredible FMC and had incredible faith and optimism. One of my favorite FMC’s I’ve read about in quite a while!
And you know Gabrielle will write the swooniest of men, always. He had a tough exterior but was soft and warm inside- which I imagine was necessity for his occupation and this time period. His love for Eleanor ran deep (even if he has a funny way of showing it sometimes. Men 🙄😉😂). But he was so manly and I loved him.
I would 100% recommend that you read this, and ASAP!! Don’t miss out on a book that belongs on your shelf, and in your brain 😁 This book is available now, so what are you waiting for?!

Once again Meyer has captured my attention with her beautiful writing. She brings history to life in such an exquisite way, as well as parts of history that I know nothing about! I always enjoy reading her author notes at the end of the story because her research is just fascinating.
But what really got me in this story was Eleanor’s journey. She lost everything thanks to her father, and for her to make the journey to Red River Colony was inspiring to me. There was a point in the book where she told Arran that she had to prove herself, not necessarily to him but to herself. That stuck with me because something’s we do need to show ourselves that we can do the hard things in life, with God’s help. Not to puff up our pride or anything, just to remind ourselves that we are able, again with the Lord by our side.

I love how author Gabrielle Meyer has such a passion for history and is able to share it with others through her engaging historical fiction stories. This is the second book in the Ladies of the Wilderness series but the characters don’t overlap and it can be read as a standalone. Book 3 will be following very soon!
This story is set in the early 1800s in the area near Winnipeg as settlers are trying to establish a colony in the midst of many hardships. As with any stories involving colonizing I have a lot of complex feelings about it, which the author acknowledges before the story begins. But I do always enjoy reading stories of people enduring through harsh circumstances and discovering how strong they can be. This book was full of tender romance, deep friendships and found family, faith, complex history, and overcoming great obstacles. While it didn’t sweep me away quite as much as the first book in the series, it was still a very strong story.

I am loving these frontier romances from Gabrielle. Historical romance is my favorite genre and while I love regency and Victorian, I feel we don’t get enough of the stories from the beginnings of our beautiful homeland. I love learning more about the history, the sacrifices, the struggles, and the triumphs of those who blazed a trail before us in the vast wilderness that would become America and Canada.

With the majority of the events and characters being factual, you get a compelling history lesson while being swept away in a second chance love story.
As always, Gabrielle gives us impeccable research, swoony romance that will curl your toes, and a harrowing adventure to boot.

This book had me on the edge of my seat in a way I did not expect it to. The balance between the romance and the impending battles had me biting my nails for 90% of the book.
Arran was jaded at first, understandably so, and Eleanor was so full of hope that it was hard to tell if their relationship would truly work. Learning about the history of the area and getting a glimpse of the day to day struggles they faced back then was eye opening.
The faith was prevalent throughout the entire book with characters who sought God in difficulties and praised Him in victories.
It was a wonderful book and ideal for anyone who enjoys historical Christian romance!

I am a huge fan of Gabrielle Meyer’s books!! I read the first one in the series- The Fur Trader’s Lady and loved it! I loved this one as well!
I was not familiar with the Red River Colony before reading this and learned a lot about the time period (1815). I find that the author is so great at telling these stories from history that I always find myself doing my own research because it sparks my curiosity.
Arran and Eleanor are both bold, brave characters. Their story is such a great one! There were so many twists and turns as they navigated hardship and danger. I was astounded at how hard life in their colony was!
Gabrielle Meyer has such a talent with weaving romance and faith into her historical stories! They are always so captivating and I would 100% recommend!!

I loved the first book in this series, so I was looking forward to reading this one. This book did not disappoint. As a Canadian, I loved reading and learning about the history surrounding Winnipeg. It was all very fascinating.
I loved the romance between Arran and Eleanor. Their love centred around tragedy, loss, and ultimately shaped by faith and perseverance. The first half of the book is lots of backstory and character building before you get to the second half where things intensify. Eleanor is of noble birth, so to see her growth in these harsh settings was wonderful to see. This book was definitely well researched and you will learn so much throughout this book. They face harsh winters, sickness, famine, death, and troubles with other settlers.
If you loved the first book in this series, please check this one out! I hope you fall in love with Eleanor and Arran’s story as much as I have.

Found this one hard to put down almost more because of the historical content than the fictional storyline, but both aspects were really good. A huge improvement on the first book of the series (not morally convoluted)! I don’t think I’ve ever read historical fiction about the Red River settlement and the Seven Oaks massacre and this was well done. As a Canadian, I appreciate Meyer’s thorough and vivid portrayal of this key point in our history. Characters were also relatable, which is definitely a plus. :)

I really enjoyed this book. I love that so much of the story is true and many of the characters were real people. The history in this book is fascinating! My favorite part of the book was the lengthy ending. So many books wrap up much too quickly for my tastes but this one lingered and we got to not just imagine what happens next but read about it. A very satisfying conclusion!

I absolutely love Meyers books and this one was no exception. It’s a similar style to book one The Fur Trader’s Lady.
Eleanor is a lady of title and wealth in Scotland but when she has basically no other choice to heads to the Americas in hopes that the man she fell in love with five years earlier will be there and marry her.
Arran is the Scotsman who had held great responsibility in the new wilderness and doesn’t want to risk Eleanor dying.
Along the way Eleanor helps a widower and his baby girl. They travel deep into the Red River Valley and face the harshest of winters, sickness, battles, other settlers, and all the worst things early settlers faced!
This novel is so well written and kept me wanting to know more. I knew nothing about this time period, and was thrilled to read about it.
I can’t wait for the next one!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is full of history on a subject I knew nothing about. But it brought it to life in a special way. I liked Eleanor and Arran’s history and story. It is full of grit, strength, love and perseverance! This book will not disappoint!

Gabrielle Meyer has done it again with this sweet historical romance. I enjoyed book 1 a great deal and this one was just as good. Meyer is truly skilled at painting the scene so vividly that you can practically see it and experience everything along with her characters. As I read, I kept finding myself going down little avenues and researching all the places and people that this story got me interested in. Meyer always puts so much research into her historical novels and it truly shows. It is such an emotional, beautiful scene of resilience, faith in God, and not giving up on what you know is right, even when facing incredible obstacles to stay on your path. Arran and Eleanor face such huge challenges, especially since Eleanor is used to a much easier life. I admires the way she not only pulled her weight, but showed such complains generosity of spirit that she became an interesting part of the colony. Every single character faced such hardships and heartbreaking circumstances. I hope there will be more books in the series, because this area and time period truly fascinate me.
