I highly recommend reading A Shift in the Water before reading this as some parts of A Shift In The Water are repeated here. Unless you've read ASITW, this book won't make much sense. It's a deeper look into Cade from ASITW and how he came to be who he is.

This book reads a little like outtakes from ASITW, stuff that was removed from the original book to make the story tighter. It reads like the author feels like these cut parts of ASITW are important to explain Cade - and I agree. A Shift In The Water would not have been hurt had the book been fleshed out with these outtakes.

Anyone who has read A Shift in the Water should read this prequel!

While Shift was a(nother) fantastic book by Patricia Eddy, this prequel fills out the characters and pack dynamics in a way that adds depth to the story.

It answers a lot of questions about the characters and the hinted-at history between many of them as well as expanding on events referenced in the novel.

For those who have not yet tried Shift, this is a great introduction as it covers a time several years before the novel and would allow the reader to go into the novel with a fuller understanding of the characters and situations.

If you love paranormal romance, especially tales that mix and mingle various elements (pardon the pun), then by all means, try this prequel, the related novel or any of Patricia Eddy's novels. You won't be disappointed.

I haven't read the first book (as this is the prequel so of course it needs to be read first), but I greatly enjoyed this glimpse into the world. Its short, but reads well, giving short peeks into Cade, Mara and Katerina's lives starting around 30 years ago and up until the present.

Not a fan of Katerina's but she doesn't seem to care how anyone else feels. Having only the vaguest idea what A SHIFT IN THE WATER (book 1) is about I'm not sure what's important the plot beyond the connection all 3 (four if count Liam, Cade's pack beta) share.

A very short story gives good background informant on the pack and helps you understand A Shift In The Water a little better. I think I should have read this before A Shift In The Water....oh well either way it's a good story.

Well written great characters create a loving family of wolves.

Patricia Eddy does a great job telling a story I can't wait to read more of this series.

Very compelling

This book made me want to read more. The author gave just enough information on all the characters to make you want more of them. I will definitely be reading more in the Elemental series.

this short read gives you all you need to know about the characters and how they came to be, what happened to them, a great way to introduce you to new series. I haven't read Shift but after reading this I think I will have a greater insight into it now. Great shifter paranormal prequel.

This was the prequel that I read last. Only I would do something like that, lol.

My only regret is that I didn't know this Prequel existed when I read the other books in the series - A Shift In The Water and A Shift In the Air. This prequel gave me the background that wasn't fully explained in A Shift In The Water, so I was very pleased that I could take some time and read about Cade and his pack once again.

Patricia Eddy's writing appeals to me on a lot of levels, but the one thing that stands out in each of her books is that the characters are full bodied and completely developed. It was very easy for me to remember the Cade I met in the other two books, and compare him to the young Cade in this book, and some of what he knew and felt and acted on in the two subsequent books became far clearer. And the other reason I enjoy Eddy's writing is that she weaves her characters into their stories. I cannot, with all of my brain power, imagine either novel which followed this prequel as NOT having Cade as a central character. Or Liam. Or Livvie. Eddy creates these characters, then makes sure they fit the story and that the story fits them. And this was yet another time she did just that.

What a great Presquel

This is great start to a awesome series this short story will give you the background you will enjoy. This is the second book I have read from this author. I read shifter in the water first and I really enjoyed it. This short novella goes with it but it should be read first but if you don't it's ok because this book still have a lot to contribute to the series. I recommend this book.

Not an actual story

When I finished the first book, Amazon indicated that this was the second book in the series. However, it is only the backstory to the first book. There is no real plot or story line and I would not have bought it if I had realized that was the case.

Even for a novella, it was a bit skimpy on explanational-type details...but it did explain a some of the background feelings.

Although it says you can read this book without having read the others in the series, I think it would have been better if I had. BUT that doesn't mean it wasn't a good read.
Cade is the son of Rachel and Caldwell. Caldwell is the alpha of his pack. When a fire girl ends up killing a wolf in his pack while she is practicing her gifts, Caldwell wants her punished. But when he tells her this, she gets all worked up and ends up falling to her death off a cliff. Her daughter Katerina watches the entire thing and swears to get her revenge.
Rachel, while running in the woods is accidentally shot by a teenager and dies. Cade is accepted into a college and wants to go but Caldwell doesn't want him to. Cade tells him he is going with or without his blessing, which ends up being without. Cade ends up with a new pack and when the alpha does the vote Cade in as alpha.
Katerina goes to introduce herself to her sister Mara when she is old enough and tells her the truth about her mothers death. But when she tells her the man responsible for their moms death is now dead, Mara asks her to leave. Says she doesn't want to get to know her, feels she is not a good person.
This sounds like a great series to pull you into. Many possibilities could take place and you could go in so many different directions. It will be great to see where this series ends up.

I liked this book and will be getting the next ones in the series. this one was free but then you'll be buying the next ones so it's a good gimmick. If you like werewolf books and fantasy elemental creatures, you'll love this book. It is short but be prepared you will want to find out what happens to Cade so you'll be buying the next books. Eddy is a good writer and she gets into your head.

This is a prequel novella to a book I'd already read, A Shift in the Water. I enjoyed that book and enjoyed this one also. it answered many of the motivations that could not really be understood in the first. I find this series to be much better than the usual "shifter" fare in that it's more about relationships and is therefore much cleaner.

Informative

I only gave this one 4 stars because I was wanting more description from the life of the pack. Not knowing what was truly lost when Cade became trapped in his wolf is killing me. I hope the next one tells more stories about the pack.

Thanks for the teaser.

A short prelude to Shift in the Water, the first book in the Elemental Shifter series. In Cade, you get an understanding of the characters as it covers several years before Shift in the Water.

If you're a fan of paranormal/shifter romance, the Elemental Shifter series is a must-read.
