This volume is where the story starts to begin to cover Gilbert's childhood from birth to age eleven living with his uncle.
At the beginning of this arc it seems that it was simply showing what Gilbert's uncle was doing after leaving the hotel but later on it was made clear that this arc is a flashback.
The art style and stylistic imagery of certain scenes make it difficult to tell the difference between a day dream,a nightmare or a flashback at times.
This arc reveals that Gilbert hardly had any decent relationships in his life.
His parents abandoned him when he was a newborn baby, his mother tried to kill him right after he was born by tossing him on the floor in his sleep(his supposed father stopped her in time of course but his uncle was going to allow her to kill her child),his father is a creep who abused and tortured the uncle(who was adapted into the family but never less this is still inc*st),his mother cheated on Gilbert's supposed father with the same uncle she knew her husband abused, none of the servants who was chosen to raise Gilbert in his parents absence treated him decently.
In fact they turned a blind eye to the horrific treatment they knew Gilbert had endured by his uncle.
He was never allowed to have a normal childhood or friends and would drink alcohol by the age of 5 by his uncle's influence and read novels meant for adults before he was 11 years old.
He was eventually sent to an all-boys boarding school only to continue this vicious circle his supposed father had started.
Serge was the only person who tried to help him at his school, everyone else turned a blind eye to his mistreatment and his mistreatment of others and spread rumors about him.
In fact these scenes made me understand and sympathize with Gilbert.
He was no longer simply a spoiled child from a wealthy family with next to no discipline who treated everyone horribly for no reason but is a more
developed (in writing) character who never experienced a normal relationship that his uncle didn't interfere with.
I won't excuse his behavior or his uncle's treatment of him but I will acknowledge that they both are characters who endure extreme and unbearable amounts of trauma which explains why they are so twisted, wrathful and obsessive even with each other.
Gilbert is blamed for his abuse because of his appearance throughout the series.
People had assumed he is "asking for it" because he looked and dressed androgynous.
Gilbert eventually contributed to the rumors and mistreatment he was facing because he realized he could use people's greed for him to his advantage.
Gilbert is ostracized because of his behavior and so the treatment of him at school became worse because of his reputation with having inappropriate interactions with his upperclassmen and with adult aristocrats and noblemen.
This section of Gilbert's past was difficult to stomach but the main story intrigued me so I continued to read it and skipped those scenes.
