The Cactus Stabbers

Rate this book
Jeff travels a lot. Millions of miles. And that's meant he's met some interesting people along the way.
He's shared breakfast with a couple of serial killers. Met a man who saved a life with a phone call. And learned a lesson about grace from a chap called Wiggins. Jeff re-tells their stories and more, as he looks at life through his realistic yet invariably optimistic lenses.
Intrigued? Dig deep into this warm, often humorous book. Jeff will make you think, wonder and ponder the big (and much smaller) issues.

Classic Lucas, funny, challenging and just a good read. I am not sure how many books Jeff Lucas has written, I have read a lot of them, this one is a sort of fun dip in book. Worth the read.

Twenty-two short chapters, most of them describing an encounter that the author had with different people around the world. In a few he recounts anecdotes that have taught him useful lessons, such as the time he went camping, or the build-up to the Christmas season.

He writes of an elderly lady who taught him about confidence in the future, of a control freak he came across, of someone who has decided to smile… and a host of other fascinating people and situations. The ‘cactus stabbers’ of the title are people dedicated to a cause in a way that caused Lucas to consider how passionate he is about his faith.

I read two or three chapters each day for about ten days, and found much to think about. Not everyone would appreciate the informality of the writing, or the clear Christian focus, but I enjoyed it very much. Definitely recommended.

I always like reading Jeff's antidotes and find them helpful. I enjoyed this book and will read through the short chapters again. However, to pay a full book price (I think 8.99) for only 133 pages of what appears double spaced lines seems to me a little poor value for money even though good value for the soul.

I enjoy Jeff Lucas's writing, and this book was just as well-written as the others I've read. The book wasn't quite what I expected it to be - there were rather more reflections and fewer encounters than I was hoping for, and after the excellence of 'Faith in the Fog' I found the reflections a little shallow. Still a good holiday read, which is the reason I bought the Kindle edition!

Excellent. Jeff gets to the heart of matters as he succinctly describes some very recognisable characters in church circles, the danger signs to watch out for and how to respond in concise chapters. All done with his characteristic wit and wisdom. An encouraging read.

An excellent book with a number of good anecdotes. Jeff Lucas never fails to write encouraging words and this book is no exception. I laughed, smiled and cried (a little) whilst reading this and would recommend it to most people.
