Plain, plump Marjorie goes to stay with her glamorous older cousin Charlene and her husband David while her parents travel in Italy. Charlene starts receiving letters saying that David murdered his first wife, and Charlene will be next! While David is at a business trip, the two go to a lake house, where the terror begins.

And that terror doesn't actually start until about page 90 in a 117 page book! It's almost more a short story than an actual book, but the sequence at the lake house is taut and suspenseful, so the book at least ends on a high note! Otherwise, the plot was too slow to get started, not a lot really happened, and it was mostly predictable. But as a super-quick read, it's still easy and enjoyable.

With a cover like this, I had high hopes for this story. I mean, I was expecting total cheese, don't get me wrong. But extremely awesome cheese. Especially given that another book by this author, Revenge of the Dolls, was a creepy standout read from when I was younger.

This story follows plain, chubby, boring Marjorie, who goes to spend her summer with glamorous Charlene and her husband David. For the first 90 or so pages (the book is all of 117 pages long), all that happens is that Charlene receives two letters that say her husband killed his first wife and Charlene would be next. Marjorie's imagination runs wild as the two spend their days shopping and having fancy lunches. Then Charlene suggests that they go to the lake house for the weekend. THE LAKE HOUSE WHERE DAVID'S FIRST WIFE DROWNED. The lights go out! Someone has broken in! There's someone outside! Oh no!!!!!

There was no tension in this story, and barely a red herring. Look at that cover! There's a freaking skull in her hair! Unfortunately, the "horror" moments in this book take about five minutes at the very end, and are fairly mundane. So disappointing...

The main character of the story thinks the same way I do but it is in bad shape so it must be terminated.

Carol Beach York is a master when it comes to the written word and descriptions; especially weather conditions. This is a story that pulls you in, and as with many CBY novels, it doesn't feel like only kids should read it.

This one took on a chilly tone right from the start. It gets chillier along the way. I loved the way Charlene talked! There were many chapters in the short book that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Downside: The cover was a bad idea. Unless you have one brain cell, it's not too hard to put things together.

I remember reading this when I was about 12 or so and as I recall I enjoyed the book as a youngster! The only thing I really remember about it the cover with the skull in the blonde woman's hair - that stuck with me all this time!!

This book is definitely for an older crowd in middle school. I read this in middle school, because I enjoyed thrillers, but parents would most likely need to ok this book before their child read it.
