With a cast of vibrant characters, this book paints a vivid story from the start. A baby girl, abandoned on a stormy night in an alley, is brought up by Mother, a voodoo woman and this baby is Nola Rain Joubert. Nola, now a young woman, finds herself a widow after a mining accident and attempts to cope on her own, until ….no spoilers. The story reveals that Milo, her husband, was far more than he told her and Milo's family provides the back drop to Nola's story.

There are some editing issues, some parts of the story lost pace and there was some repetition but I enjoyed this story and the characters portrayed. The plot is well constructed and I found myself saying 'No! Don't give the letter to him!' or 'No! Don't trust him!' as the reader is privy to information that the characters are not. At times as the pace slowed, it was the characters that kept me reading, Dominy Brooks, Ivy Taylor and the Sheriff with a conscience. Reading the climax to the story, I couldn't put the book down as the pace gathered and ….no spoilers.

Most enjoyable first novel and deserves 4* rating.

This is a charming novel about a rags to riches story. It has romance, crime, mystery and thrills. The characters were all very well drawn and believable and kept the pace going nicely. The author is particularly good at evoking imagery and describing the location and surroundings. There were times I felt as though I were there, a fly on the wall, looking in. I had a lot of sympathy and empathy for the main character of Nola, and some of the other characters such as Ivy and Dominy really made me smile. The villain of the book is brilliantly drawn, and as the action gathered pace towards the end I found myself wanting to hide behind a pillow. I enjoyed this from start to finish and would definitely read more from this author.
