This first book in the series tells a complete story. There are no apparent ties to the other books in the series other than the obvious theme.

This is a fairly short book but long enough to be a novel. I read Rejected Mail Order Bride previously and this book has what that novella didn't - character development, building a relationship and adequate, but not sparkling, dialogue.

This is a Christian book. Several characters profess faith in God and there are many prayers during the story. The book is technically not preachy, but the frequency, length and content of the many prayers are almost sermons in themselves.

The main character, Elizabeth, is exemplary in both character and faith. In fact, she is a bit too perfect. Even though she should have been a pampered heiress had her father not gone into debt before his death, she is willing to work extremely hard to the point of blisters and exhaustion. If she has a character flaw, it is that she is a little too eager to decide important things for those she loves without consulting them.

Her sister, Virginia, is something of an enigma to me. She is extremely immature, naïve and spoiled. Elizabeth feels the need to protect and care for her despite the fact that she is well past the age of independence for a young woman in the frontier world. There would not be a story if Elizabeth did not take responsibility for Virginia even though the girl is old enough to sing in a seedy tavern and attract disreputable attention. Another enigmatic trait is that Virginia regularly and willingly participates in devotions and going to church, yet also is eager to sneak out at night to said tavern.

Mature themes; sex between the married couple is not described. But the author is 2 for 2 in books I've read describing in general but lengthy terms the perils that attractive young women face from lecherous men. Seemingly, men are either lechers, or Christian ministers and church pillars. Even that mature theme pales compare to the climatic peril. (I would not recommend this book for teens and if you are evaluating this book for that purpose, open my spoiler.) ***Definite spoiler but also serious mature themes***

Elizabeth and Williams story is truly amazing. When Elizabeth and her sister looses everything they don't know what to do. When Elizabeth sends a reply to be a mail order bride her life will change. You will feel God working throughout this whole book.
