This Old House #2

A Sweet Montana Christmas

Rate this book
Melinda Sweet loved her husband before she learned of his wealth and she loves him still, despite the fact that it’s gone. Unfortunately, while she knows the collapse of his Chicago financial services business had nothing to do with him, he believes otherwise. His upbeat adjustment to their new – and temporary – life on his grandfather’s rundown honey farm is a foil to cover the burden of failure. She wasn’t expecting to throw – in five weeks – the traditional Sweet Christmas Open House, but it’s a good earning opportunity and how hard could it be?

Austin Sweet is determined to make his wife proud of him again. But he also wants to erase the sting of shame he feels from his parents, to whom he owes a debt of gratitude for arranging for this caretaking job. Getting paid to fix up this disaster is better than living in their basement, sure. But what does he know about bees? Or fixing broken plumbing? Or cleaning a chimney?

But when Austin’s grandfather gives him the farm as a Christmas gift, there’s only one response. Accepting the gift will secure a future that will make his wife even more unhappy than he already is. Refusing the gift will finalize the rift between him and his family, but he’d rather lose them than Melinda. Then he discovers she’s spared him the choice. Austin’s not-so-Sweet side rears up as he determines that he’s done trying to make everyone happy. He’ll get his wife back, no matter what. And they’ll decide their future together.

aka Roxanne Willems-Snopek.

USA TODAY bestselling author Roxanne Snopek writes contemporary romance both sexy and sweet, in small towns, big cities, on secluded islands and sun-drenched beaches, with families and communities that will warm your heart. Her fictional heroes (like her own real-life hero) are swoon-worthy, uber-responsible, secretly vulnerable and occasionally dough-headed, but animals love them, which makes everything okay.

Avid gardener, soup-maker and bread-eater, Roxanne writes from British Columbia, Canada, surrounded by dogs, cats, deer, squirrels and occasionally bear and bobcat. When she thinks of it, she does yoga and cleans the house. Well, not that last thing.

A Sweet Montana Christmas is a story of second chance at romance.

Austin has lost everything he loved, his career, his money, his home and most importantly his wife who left him. He moved to live and work on his Grandad's farm which his father owns. He knows nothing about bee keeping and goat farming but thanks to his neighbour he is learning and the house is a fixer upper but he's surviving.

Melinda went to stay with her mom a month ago she has a secret which she has not shared with Austin. She drives down to the farm hoping they can work their problems through and start again. A fresh start it is tough to begin with but with time they both start talking and working together preparing for the open house that happens each Christmas.

This is a nice Christmas read with some sweet moments between husband and wife.

What a captivating novella. Snopek’s original yet emotional story drew me in to the world that she painted before me with her words. I appreciated the in depth background to this story. Snopek takes the time to tell a fully developed, realistic, and unforgettable tale of love, loss, and redemption while taking you on an incredible journey. This well written story can easily be read as a standalone, but the warm, inviting Marietta feel is there as well.

Snopek’s multifaceted character development really lets you get to know the main characters. You find out what they’re thinking about situations, what they actually do, and how they feel. Readers are introduced to their individual and combined histories, while getting to know their situation in the present. It was absolutely phenomenal. I felt like I really understood these individuals and their situations. The fact that this couple is in a very difficult, emotional spot adds to the intensity of this novella. I also appreciated the way that Snopek developed her supporting cast. Readers only get to know them the way that the main characters see them. By keeping the focus on this fantastic couple readers are completely immersed in a heart wrenching yet beautiful romance.

This was my first foray into Snopek’s writing. It was definitely time well spent. This is the perfect Christmas novella for those looking for a story with romance, family, and a one of a kind backdrop.

Roxanne Snopek is a master in writing timeless stories. This means what was written for another purpose or time rings so true right now...and that is the beauty of writing and an author's creativity. Ms. Snopek focuses on the relationship and meaning of self for these characters, and it is the insights she presents that mean so much.

Austen and Melinda are experiencing what many couples do...the crossroads of disappointment, the feeling of letting your partner down, and no communication that really focuses on what needs to be said.
Austen had been a business partner with his cousin and unfortunately, Austen is a victim of bad business dealings he had no part of...causing him to lose everything and making him feel like he failed Melinda. The home is lost, the only way to regroup is to go out to the farm offered him in Montana.

Melinda is a nurse and had worked in the inner city of Chicago dealing with all of the challenges that can happen. She is a strong person but when she experiences something that shakes her to her core, she feels the need for some type of security. Right now her home with Austen isn't that place so she goes to stay with her mom.

Austen is kneedeep trying to adapt and learn how to handle this family's honey farm. Not easy for a guy who isn't handy at all. Austen feels he has to do something to show his worth as he feels the failure of his Chicago life must be overcome.

The chance to make everything better happens when Melinda comes out to Montana and sees what Austen is trying to accomplish. There is a traditional Sweet Christmas Open House and Austen is over his head. She offers to help and together they might be able to repair all the damage they have been hiding from each other.

Roxanne Snopek provides a full story of love, second chances, and learning to communicate and be true to the ones you love. Another timeless story that can ring true during these tough times.

This book deals with the fractured relationship between the two main characters, Austin and Melinda. Melinda is a pediatrics nurse dealing with high-risk pregnancies/births, mainly due to the fact that most of the mothers are drug addicts. Austin is recovering from the humiliating loss of his and his cousin's financial investments business. Since Austin lost all their material wealth with the collapse of the business, he accepts the offer of his grandfather's farm and property in Montana. Since they are both from Chicago, this is quite a change for them. I liked how the characters interacted with each other. It seemed very realistic. The family dynamics between Austin and Melinda and both of their parents was interesting too. Since this is also a "This Old House" book it deals with renovations to the homestead that added another element to the story. All-in-all an enjoyable read.

Christmas is just around the corner so it’s time to get crackin’ and read a few Christmas tales and to start me off I chose something short and sweet.
Christmas is not the main focal point in this story but that didn’t bother me as it still had that christmassy feel.

This is my second read by Roxanne Snopek and I’m really liking her stories. A Sweet Montana Christmas is a pleasing tale set in rural Montana and is the second book in the This Old House series.

Austin and Melinda Sweet’s marriage is a little rocky, can the dilapidated honey farm save their marriage? Fantastic storyline, great supporting characters and a few familiar faces pop in from book one which was exciting, I always love it when a character/s from another book pops in. The Sweet’s Christmas Open House is described beautifully. It’s a magical time at the honey farm for all those who visit.

A delightful read.

I love second chance stories and A Sweet Montana Christmas is a wonderful example of a married couple who because of many outside causes have drifted apart and one last ditch effort to try and put their lives back together again. I know that sounds like it might be a heavy story and in some cases it is but more than that it is two people learning to accept their situation, learning to trust each other again, and remembering the reason they fell in love in the first place. I really enjoyed this couple’s road back to happily ever after.
Austin Sweet has had a horrible year with losing his business, not being able to provide for his wife and moving to take care of his grandfather’s farm because he has no place else to go and his father offered him this chance to regroup. I’m going to state up front that Austin is throwing himself a pretty good sized pity party but when his estranged wife, Melinda, shows up and announces they should try and reconcile it becomes evident that she is exactly what Austin needs.
I very much enjoyed watching these two rediscover the love they once had for each other and experiencing the simple joys in life, something I’m not sure they ever really did before. They both have some big time struggles to overcome and yet somehow when they are together and communicating they seem more manageable. I love that even though “country” life wasn’t something Melinda wanted she put forth ever effort to make the best of what they had and to give it a fair shot because she realized it was something that made Austin happy. The fact that Austin did everything to help Melinda feel more at ease including inviting some other women to their home in hopes of her finding friends showed how much he loved her and wanted her happy. Sure their life wasn’t perfect and they had some outside forces that didn’t help their situation.
A sweet and wonderful story of two people believing and trusting in each other to do what was right for their relationship and in the end realizing that being together was way more perfect than being apart.

A heart warming story about the couple involved in a marriage torn apart by the collapse of a financial business and lack of communication which is given a second chance out at the rundown honey farm in the Montana hills. They love each other but will they communicate and share their love to rebuild their marriage despite the adversities they’re experiencing or will problems again intervene to split their relationship?

Austin Sweet feels he’s let everyone down, even though the failure of his business wasn’t actually his fault. He’s lost his job, home, social position, everything and is in danger of losing his wife, too. She’s a midwife and collapsed at work after being attacked, she’s scared to do the job again and ran away to stay with her Mum because Austin wasn’t really talking to her. Now she’s going out the join him on his grandfather’s honey farm, unsure of what the future holds for her and her husband.

The characters are made so realistic by this fantastic author, you feel every emotion along with them, their hopes, fears and angst, beautifully portrayed to the readers in this superb story. The couple are going through hard times and have to work together to rebuild their relationship and their new home. They are learning together about the farm, the animals and each other. A great story of hope for the festive season - I really enjoyed it and will be looking out for other books by this author in future!

Melinda Sweet and her husband, Austin, have gone through difficult times. They lost their way when Austin's company collapsed during the economic downturn. He went to Montana to take care of his family farm while his wife stayed behind. Now Mel has come to see her absent husband. Can they repair the damage to their marriage and start over? Mel is a very giving woman. She tried hard to support Austin, but now she is exhausted and afraid. Austin feels that he failed her. His confidence has been destroyed. After all he couldn't support his wife. This story has great emotional depth. It touched me as I saw the devastation of their marriage. I was moved when Mel and Austin finally turn to each other and took comfort in their love. Stress and pain had driven a wedge between them, but the peaceful life in Montana helped them heal. The serene setting and the caring people added to the story. Roxanne Snopek writes characters that you care about and she made me believe that a second chance at happiness is possible.

Enjoyable yet incredibly frustrating read. The setting is promising: Austin's company has collapsed - due to no fault of his - and while he is dealing with the downfall and guilt associated with it, Melinda is working hard to keep them financially afloat. She takes on a lot of night shifts (she is a nurse), gets overtired, and makes a mistake at work. Because of their schedules, Melinda and Austin have grown apart and Melinda asks for a divorce. The story begins with Austin living and restoring his deceased grandfather's farm in hope to sell it in the spring. He is surprised when Melinda joins him and tells him "they should try again".

Then it gets frustrating. All the past and hurt feelings are settled in ONE conversation, and not even a long one at that. And Melinda seem to have trouble dealing with her mistake at work and opening up. Then she talks about it to someone she just met. Just because she decides she has to move on.

It is a pity that the characters did not act in a more believable way.

I love books/novellas in which the story revolves around the strong love between a wife and husband and whatever problems they need to resolve in order to get back to that deep love. A Sweet Montana Christmas does this and does it well. It is a captivating story of how Austin and Melinda Sweet work to mend a marriage torn apart by his mistakes in his financial job and her mishap as a labor and delivery nurse.
They have been separated with him living on the rundown family honey farm and with her living with her mother, who convinces Melinda not to give up on the marriage and the wonderful thing it is. Melinda surprises Austin at the farm, knowing that there has been no diminishing in their love for each other. Somehow they will find the way back while finally dealing with the clutter of events that drew them apart.

A wonderful written story of a broken marriage that needs to be fixed. Austin has lost everything on a corporate fall, so he accepts his dad's gift of turning around his grandfather's dilapidated cabin. His wife Melinda, OB nurse does not follow immediately, until her mother tells her, she needs to tell her husband her news. Melinda shows up and the mutual attraction is still there. A little Christmas magic and a new baby will help bring this couple back together.
This is the sixth book in the series of Christmas of Montana Born, a stand alone book but it was great to see the other residents of Marrieta. I highly recommend you read this book this Christmas season.

The story was okay, but I didn't feel there was much to it. I liked romances, but I prefer them to be clean...and this story wasn't - at all! I'm certainly glad it was short, so it didn't take me love to read it. I don't recommend this book unless you enjoy books with steamy scenes in them.

This sweet contemporary Christmas romance wasn't so sweet for me. I think it was fairly well written and edited, but I felt the problems between the main characters were too drawn out. Also, note that this is not a "clean" romance, in case some might be misled by "sweet". I did like the resolution of the problems at the end of the book, but overall, I felt it had kind of a depressing feel.

This would've been better categorized as a winter novel. Christmastime really wasn't a part of the story. But I did like the storyline otherwise. It was a married couple coming back together and I enjoy those kinds of stories.

I loved this second chance romance which examines the new reality of a married couple who have lost everything and are floundering to come to grips with their circumstances. Austin and Melinda had everything money could buy until his company went bust and she had to leave him and her nursing job behind. I loved the myriad of emotions both characters are grappling with as they are forced to take over a run down family ranch because they have lost everything and have no where else to go. The love between them is tenuous but it’s also fierce, tender and captivating to behold. I listened to the audiobook version and I loved the nuanced narration performance of Felicity Munroe.

Ah, another wonderfully written book by Ms. Snopek. A Sweet Montana Christmas is the heart-warming, tension-filled story of Melinda and Austin Sweet—a recently separated couple who’ve had their share of hardships and are willing to give it one last go before they give up entirely on one another. It is a story of love, friendship, and family, and I ate up nearly every minute of it.

As with all of the author’s books, the writing was impeccable. The story moved along at a good pace, it was easy to read and follow along with, and the colorful narrative and dialogue seemed to melt effortlessly into the background. I was absolutely absorbed in the storytelling.

The only problem I had with the book, and trust me, it was very much –my problem-, is that I’m not a big fan of romance stories that start after-the-fact of the couple’s relationship. Melinda and Austin were already married, already in love at once point, and I didn’t know them as a couple. I wish I’d gotten to know them when they were first in love… I think it would have helped cement their relationship for me. That’s not the author’s fault though. That’s every bit my own problem, and I recognize it—and so I’m not marking points off the overall score.

That aside, the story was beautifully written and full of both heartwarming and steamy moments between Melinda and Austin. The cast of characters, though brief, seemed authentic. I wanted it to work out for the couple, and though there were a few niggling details that bothered me (like the fact that Austin had magically become more muscle-bound in the time between he and his wife had last seen each other) overall, the story was a short, but engaging delve into the small-town Montana life, and I enjoyed it. I’d be happy to recommend this short little story to anyone looking for a sweet holiday-themed read, and I encourage you to take a look at the rest of the author’s work. I have had the privilege of reading quite a few of her works over the last two years, and everyone of them has been remarkably well written. If you like cozy romance stories, you’ll enjoy this.

I absolutely love second chance romance! This is the story of Melinda and Austin two people that have lost their way to a happy marriage. Austin’s business has failed; they've lost their house. With all of the time Austin has been putting into the business, he is not putting time into the marriage, so it is on the rocks as well. Austin's parents step in asking Austin to go to his grandfather’s farm and get it ready to sell, as it turns out the farm needs lots of work. Melinda feels they are meddling and moves into her mother’s house. Austin goes to the farm without her. He is determined to make a success of the farm, where he did not for his business. He wants to make Melinda proud of him again. Melinda is an obstetrics nurse at the local hospital. However, there is an incident where she nearly passes out and almost drops a baby. Luckily another attendant catches the baby before any anything happens to the baby. Melinda finds out the reason she almost passed out is she is pregnant. But the incident forces her to leave the hospital. Melinda’s mother tells her she needs to tell Austin about the pregnancy or she will. After some serious thinking, she realizes she wants to start over and wants to make the marriage work because she never stopped loving Austin. She goes to the farm to tell Austin. When she arrives, she realizes they have a lot of work ahead of them, on both their marriage, and the farm.

I love a great emotional romance and A Sweet Montana Christmas certainly fits that category!
I had forgotten how well Ms. Snopek does this. She brings her readers into the book and make you actually see and feel what she is writing about.

A Sweet Montana Christmas, is one inspirational romance. Roxanne Snopek has done it again with her new novel. I love how realistic the characters and story are. The way this well-written plot unfolds, readers will feel like they are experiencing the ups and downs of one couple's journey. A love for better of worse. Decisions are super hard to make especially, when one's family pressures their child into the life they want. Roxanne Snopek has stunningly woven together a tale of a man, who finds what he really wants and goes after it.

Deep inside, A Sweet Montana Christmas, readers will recieve a first hand glimspe into a real romance. One that will allow readers to easily connect with both of the characters. The emotional struggles feel so believable that readers will end up feeling like there are the characters. Roxanne Snopek's novel, shows readers that romance ins't easy and not always charming. That it can be a struggle and has it's own rollercoaster ride like us in reality experience as well. Husband and wife are deeply in love with each other and now experiencing a bit of life's harsh cruelities. Money is not like it was yet, the wife still loves her husband. However, he feels like a disappointment to his wife and wants only the best for her. He struggles with his family pressuring him and leaving him with two choices. Will he do what it takes to make his family happy or go after what he loves and cherishes? Readers will indeed want to read this enchanting title. I felt my heart go out to both Austin and Melinda. Overall, I highly recommend this novel to readers everywhere.

Roxanne Snopek is one of those authors that if I ever got to meet would just leave me speechless. So yeah, I’m a fan. It pains me to say that I’m not a big fan of her This Old House Series.

The characters in the series just don’t make me want to gravitate towards them. I had an even harder time wanting to read A Sweet Montana Christmas, because the heroine and I just weren’t getting along. In my first attempt at reading this book, I seriously struggled to get through the first 68%.

After spending weeks away from the book, I came back to it and made a realization about it. These characters are realer than real. They have true problems that you can see in society at large. Their lives aren’t roses and fairy tales, things are a struggle for them.

A Sweet Montana Christmas is about two people, Melanie and Austin Sweet who have allowed the day to day rat race of keeping up with the Joneses destroy their lives and their marriage. This is a story of life knocking you down, you taking time to gather yourself, and then coming out from under the tidal wave you’ve been under.

The one thing that is abundantly clear with this story is that throughout their ups and downs, throughout their separation that Austin and Melanie never gave up on or lost the love they had for one and other. And it’s that love that helped them come back together and see themselves and life in a whole new way.

A Sweet Montana Christmas by Roxanne Snopek

When a failed businessman and a nurse on leave take over a rundown honey farm, they are forced to work together and rediscover the joy that once filled their marriage. But an impossible choice – her career or his triumph – nearly tears them apart for good.

It takes a blizzard, a power outage, a pregnant woman and a Christmas miracle to remind them that they can overcome anything, as long as they are together.

A Sweet Montana Christmas by Roxanne Snopek is a wonderful story of second chances and forgiveness that just happens to take place during the Christmas Season. While the season adds to the story, it by no means dominates the storyline. I truly loved the characters, Austin and Melinda. Life has a ways of wearing people down and apart. I loved the realistic way that they found each other again and pulled together to save their marriage.

Their sweet Christmas would have been better without his parents, but the events with them makes this story even more infused with realism. Spouses usually come with a family. Melinda went the extra mile with her in-laws in this story.

I would love to see them a few years down the road, perhaps at another open house for the honey farm. These characters feel like friends more than someone I just read about. What about their neighbor, does he get a HEA too?

I just got sucked into this series. It makes me want to go visit there. It is always nice to know the community is there to help if it is necessary. In this case Austin has lost everything in his life, including his wife. Mel is broken and has gone to hide at her Mom's. Austin's Dad has sent him to manage the family farm-Chicago to Montana. Mel hasn't stopped loving him so it's from Mom's to Montana just before Christmas. Mel was a maternity nurse and not so into a farm life as she carries mice out of the house and feeds feral barn cats. There are a lot of spoilers. Everyone here has a problem to solve. This is a great story for Christmas. Please give this a chance. I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this story, the characters and the fact it is in Marietta. (Love that town!) Melinda is staying with her Mom but misses her husband Austin, so she goes to see him. Austin is alone and wishing for Melinda to come and be with him. They are worlds apart about many things that have happened in the past. Will living on Sweet Fields Farm bring them back together or drive them further apart?

I really enjoyed A Sweet Montana Christmas. Melinda and Austin have been separated for a month when she unexpectedly shows up at his family's farm. Both of them take responsibility for the mistakes made in there marriage. Both look at running the family farm as temporary until they start making friends with the locals and the animals. I liked that this book wasn't predictable like most other books are. It's a great addition to the Montana Born Christmas series.

Melinda and Austin are married and Austen's buissness sinks making him feel like a failure but Melinda never cared about knee or any of that, just just loved hi and wanting to make things better for him but not knowing how. Austin on the other hand feels like he's failed her and it takes him waking up to see he never wants to lose her.

Oh WoW this book is not what I expected but was so much more. Austin Sweet has lost everything including it appears his wife. We meet him as he is in this broken down old farmhouse in the middle of winter in Marietta, Montana. Yes, my favorite place in the entire world (that really does not even exists). We discover that he has been "gifted" the Sweet Honey Farm only to recover it and get it back up to making a profit. Then we get to meet Melanie his wife and this is where the story gets interesting and takes a very surprising turn. Things are not always as they seem and life does throw thing all sorts of amazing things at you. You just need to be open to catching them with open arms and a willing heart. This book was so moving and oh so touching to me. It had me wanting to can jams and eat more honey. (I already only eat organic honey as my sweetner.) Author Roxanne Snopek can paint an amazing picture of the broken down farmhouse with the bee barn and goats in vivid color. I can see the lights on the old show pieces and all the snow all around the farm. We do get to see some familiar faces among the new ones. Beautiful novella about family, friendships and second change love.
Also As a wonderful surprise I got to read one of Roxanne Snopek's short stories called
