Somewhere in the darklands of Creet, an necromancer and murderous android have just made a horrifying pact. Kase, a novice mage, and Brell, an outlaw bounty hunter, are out to stop them. Brell wants the reward. Kase wants vengeance. Armed with his magic and her illegal technology, they set out on a perilous journey. Soon they’re plunged into a deadly adventure of cursed cities, sinister necromancers, and untamed magic. The killer is expecting them. After all, he invited them to carry out his master plan.

I love Kase! He's still impetus, he's still over confident, he's still completely reckless, he's still impatient and he's still getting into trouble! His poor uncle sure has his hands full, always trying to get him to be more sensible, to think before he acts, but this is Kase we're talking about. After each ill thought deed, he really feels remorse as one such conversation with Brell highlights to perfection. Kase says "I think I did something terrible" to which Brell retorts "you should think about having that tattooed on your arm". I almost want to throw my hands up in despair at him, which is the exact reaction he evokes in Brell. Who, BTW, doesn't trust magic or mages as far as she can spit. One couldn't find two people more different, and yet they grudgingly forge a friendship, grudgingly because neither of them liked what the other represented, the differences in their worlds and the mistrust from both parties. Notwithstanding their respective views, they still have each other's backs and they certainly needed to! Thanks to Kase's, let's call it curiosity....an evil is released. Now the race is on to not only find and neutralise the escapee but also the bot who has been evading them, both have the ability to devastate both their worlds.
The interesting observation I came to is that normally a character like Kase would frustrate me to the point of irritation BUT he does exactly the opposite! I honestly love his almost infantile approach to everything, he's totally unencumbered by anything, only follows the drum to his own beat and darn the consequences, well rather, he doesn't think there will be consequences, and I find myself spurring him on. He's honourable, he's caring, he has a dire need to find his parents and he has an almost happy go lucky attitude, he's just so nice. Brell on the other hand keeps her emotions well hidden, her inner sense of right prevails and I love how she tries to to rationalise her thoughts and feelings. I do feel her loneliness and her disappointment in people, what her people have done, yet she slowly allows Kase in, putting her unease of magic aside. So lovely. And there's the dog that befriended them, Rumcole, who just happens to appear at will... hmmm, much more there than meets the eye. Looking forward to see where this character goes.
And then there's the absolute delight of Wickenald and the people called Gu'Inki and how they were misled and used. The scene where the so called Abbot got what was coming to him, felt like poetic justice, I even spurted out a cackle.
Alwyn really has his work cut out for him! Trying to reign in Kase is almost impossible! Love how he tries to warn Kase, tries to tell him that he's not ready to expand on his magic, but does Kase listen! Pfft! Hardly ever! His excitement and enthusiasm, as well as his over confidence in his capabilities are so naive. I would have liked to have seen more of Alwyn but this book focuses mostly on Kase and Brell, their interactions, which are hilarious at times, and their adventures. Goodness me are there aplenty!
I found this book more light hearted than the previous two, which only enhanced my enjoyment. And my enjoyment of this series is sitting firmly on 11 on a scale from 1 to 5!!!! Looking forward to more Kase and Brell capers.
I received a digital advanced reader copy of this book from the author for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Brell and Kase are off on another adventure again in Nemesis, with Brell resuming her search for the murderous robot Ethan Five Seven.
I love the character dynamic between Brell and Kase and I feel like that really shines in this book. You can tell that they have grown to really care about each other and will have each other's backs no matter what. A new companion, a dog named Rumcole, also joins the duo in their adventures and I think he's an absolutely adorable addition to the team.
Fun adventures and exploration are the hallmark of the Rift series and there is lots of that in Nemesis. Kase and Brell end up in many different situations throughout the book, such as facing ghouls and cat-people and getting involved in a war. These adventures were tons of fun to read and were a fun escape from my not-so-exciting everyday life.
I have really enjoyed reading the Rift series and I feel like Nemesis may be the best book in the series so far.
I received an advanced readers copy. Nemesis what a fun read, I enjoyed all the action. These characters Kade and Brell have an interesting relationship you can see how they really care for each other. They are each other’s ride or die. There was tons of exploring and great adventures. I don’t want to spoil anything, and I am definitely going to read all the books in this series. I really enjoyed this one and I say it is a must read. Thanks for the opportunity to review this book
Been reading a lot of fantasy lately and some of it has been quite tiresome. Not this one! Kase and Brell are wonderful characters with their polar opposite personalities. The side personalities are interesting. The action is non-stop. The dialogue is great. There's a good bit of humor. Picked up this series with the third book but I'll have to go back and see what happened earlier. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. Kase and Brell are hot on the trail of Ethan. Their journey becomes quite the adventure, especially after being joined by a dog, that might not really be a dog. Kase does make some serious mistakes and lets loose an evil entity. Trying to save their world just got more difficult! Gripping, fast paced action and surprises await the reader, keeping you glued to the pages and wanting more!
Now that was more fun than a barrel of weird lizards. Kase and Brell continue on their merry way to explore and contain. But oh what a field of angry folks they have left in their wake.
