Shades of Red

Rate this book
Old Feud. New Threat.

The streets run red in the city of Lochridge, where violence is law and loyalty is unquestionable. At its heart is a long-standing feud between two rival gangs—the White Roses and the Ravens—that has corrupted everything it’s touched.

As the heirs to the two gangs, Stella Rook and Jordan Daelik have been enemies since birth, tragedy and bloodshed hanging between them. When a new threat arrives in Lochridge in the form of Silas Tradow, a cunning businessman intent on seizing control of their city, the very foundations of the gangs are shaken. Forced into an uneasy alliance, the two heirs must set aside their strife and work together to overcome the threat before it can consume them. Stella and Jordan have every reason to hate each other, but as they grow closer, their rivalry turns into something else—attraction. But in a city where trust is dangerous and love is a death wish, they can’t afford to let their guards down, no matter the cost.

Diamond in the Rough author Jayden Thompson is back with a sweeping novel about ruthless ambition, dangerous romance, and a city on the brink of destruction—where the only thing deadlier than power is who you give your heart to.

4.25 stars | a unique story about familial rivalry and enemies-to-lovers | 2/3 spice, 2.5/3 violence, profanity, trigger warnings such as SA | decent pacing, nice writing style, and great characters

This review accidentally got deleted before I could post it so I'm going to keep it brief since the first version was a lot of yapping.
Alright characters: loved them. Zoey was my absolute favorite. To me, partially because I'm in my KDH era rn (cringey ik), she was like a more badass, flirty version of KDH Zoey and I absolutely loved her for it.
Relationships: amazing. StellaxJordan, MateoxJasmin, and the platonic ones too, StellaxZoey, MateoxJordanxDeclan, LillianxEvelyn; loved them all.
The rivalry, particulary Stella vs. Celia??? Yes. Celia was surprisingly badass and I love that for her because that made Stella seem that much cooler.

The only thing I disliked about this book was one aspect of the enemies-to-lovers. I just feel like at some point it went too fast. They were enemies, and for a good portion of the book, but when they wanted to be friends, like almost immediately they skipped on ahead to lovers. Like, I get that once they're not enemies it's pretty easy to give in to that tension that's been building right? But I just think that if they could have been friends for a little longer, they're relationship could've felt more real, you know? It could have felt more meaningful. If that all makes sense.

Overall, a really good book!!! I'd recommend if you're looking for something out-of-the-box or a for a unique take on enemies-to-lovers!

(I received an free arc of this book from the author. This review is unbiased.)

I loved this book! The enemies to lovers trope was done perfectly. The side characters were so well fleshed out and were so wholesome! (Except for You-Know-Who)
The pacing, the setting, and romance were all so well written.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of swearing and inappropriate content in this book, which took me out of the story multiple times. Probably about the same amount as A Good Girls Guide to Murder or the first few Shatter Me books.

I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it. ❤️

Review:
I've never read books about gang before but I totally loved this one! The plot was totally AMAZING, same for the plot twists. When I talk about enemies-to-lovers, I'm talking about THIS kind of enemies-to-lovers. I am so happy to have signed up for an ARC of SoR. I can't wait for the second book in the series to come out!

ARC read! This book was a ton of fun, but also kinda traumatic! All the things I love. I would describe it as a more Western Six of Crows. I would totally recommend you check it out when it releases on September 1st!

I had the honor of being a beta reader for this book and let me just say that Jayden’s writing is so addictive! I loved the characters and the setting for Shades of Red so much. Shades of Red is kind of a mix of Six of Crows meets Romeo & Juliet so if that’s your kind of book, you’ll love this

Let me start this by saying thank you so so much to Jayden Thompson and her team for letting me recieve an early copy of this book, I appreciate it!!

I literally could not put this book down, my family literally has to drag me away to do things while we were on vacation 🤣. I have three things that I absolutely love about this book.
1. The enemies to lovers was REAL. ENEMIES. TO. LOVERS. None of this "he knew her before but she didn't so he was never really her enemy." Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for stuff like that, but it was really refreshing to see an enemies to lovers where he wasn't attracted to her previously (or the other way around. Also, the enemies actually behaved like enemies, none of this flirting pre lovers.
2. The villain was believable, well written, and did not get a redemption arc. Like the enemies to lovers thing, I am also a sucker for villain redemption occasionally, but I loved that I was not in this book.
3. The characters were well written, and invoked a lot of emotion. Harvey, Stella's cousin, made me so mad sometimes (or all the time) that I actually resonated with Stella and Zoey's disgust and aggravation. Also, any scenes between Stella and Jordan after the finally kissed were amazing. The first "who did this to you" had me kicking my feet.

I really hope that there is a second book, because this one was amazing. Also, Jordan is now mine, hehe.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to beta read this book, and even in its first-draft stage it was absolutely amazing!!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a true ENEMIES to lovers. It was so well paced, with such an immersive plot, and characters that you will fall in love with! I truly wish Goodreads allowed for 1/2 stars, because (as a first draft) I gave this book 4.5 stars! I have no doubt the finished copy will be an even greater read, and I can’t wait to order a physical copy! Jayden has 100% become an Insta-buy author for me!

I haven’t enjoyed a good YA book in so freaking long. A enemies to lovers story above that!! So many YA books claim they are an enemies to lovers trope but rarely are they done RIGHT. Jayden Thompson has done an incredible job in portraying an enemies to lovers trope that was ACTUALLY GOOD!! Every part of their story was enjoyable and genuinely entertaining.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good enemies to lovers, plot twists, and adventure. Jayden Thompson truly made a remarkable book and I am excited to see what happens next.

THIS BOOK WAS GOOD!!!!

So I was an arc reader but I promise this review is as unbiased as possible.

First of all let's talk about the romance: LISTEN UP BECAUSE IT WAS A REAL ENEMIES TO LOVERS, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!! LIKE. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! THIS BOOK DELIVERED!!!!!

Oh my gosh we've had too many "insta-love" situations in books like these recently, but I found Stella and Jordan's relationship to actually be very, very compelling. Neither of them felt like they were just there to be a love interest and they were both pushing agendas of their own. I like that the romance and the plot were kept mostly separate and I liked the chemistry between them. (I didn't really love the nicknames at the start, but I'll be honest, they kinda grew on me by the end.)

The characters were great and all felt super fleshed out.

I'm honestly shocked that the author is only 19, like this book was toooooooo good.

Anyway, I loved it and I have nothing more to say! ;)

Go read this book. Like now. You don’t understand—𝐈 𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐮𝐩.

I don’t know what was in this story, but GOODNESS. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬. Do you want an 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 where they 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 and 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐠𝐮𝐧𝐬? Where they both have such hatred, and one doesn’t fall immediately yet pretends to deny it? If so, Shades of Red is for you.

I came for the rivalry, but was also served 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭 on a silver platter. I was HOOKED from the first scene to the last and genuinely 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠.

𝐍𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐲. I can’t deny that 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 and 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞! The 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐎 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 and the story ended with 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 and 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.

One of my favorite parts? 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭. They 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡, and I wasn’t stuck with the annoyance of plot struggles because of a dumb decision.

I just finished this book. It was astoundingly phenomenal. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for this book. I mean, I had never read a book that I found from some author on YouTube. This led me to move slow at first. But when I reached the halfway point, everything changed. At the beginning, I wasn't rooting for Stella or Jordan. I didn't think they'd be good together. Though now, seeing the way they began communicating, I was like "please, please, please end up together in the end." I loved their dynamic. I think if I made a list of book couples that are so, so perfect together, Stella and Jordan would be on it. Also, I have to mention that Lana was so adorable. I know she's around my age, so it's weird that I'm calling her adorable, but just the way she communicated made her so sweet! I also loved the way that Jayden added the other characters into the story-like I was glad Mateo, Declan, and Zoey made an entrance and believed and accepted Jordan and Stella. I also liked how everything was realistic. Like, of course Stella and Jordan would tell their fathers their worries about Silas, and the way John and Marcus acted like they were overreacting was a great touch. Jayden also did a great job about convincing you to feel certain ways about the characters. Like after what Harvey tried to do to Jasmin, it swayed us to dislike him. Or Celia, she's disgustingly horrible, and I need her dead. But on the other hand, I didn't like Jordan at first because of Liam, but Jayden did a great job at redeeming him. Him and Lana are for sure my favorite characters. I think my favorite scenes were during the gala, Stella telling Jordan Evelyn's story, and any scene where Jordan saved Stella's life. Jayden Thompson is an incredible author, and I can't wait to see her future works. I would totally recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I can't wait to see what happens next!

This was my first ever ARC read. Thank you, Jayden for the ARC.

This made me feel a wide range of emotions, mostly anger. Anger at Marcus, John, Harvey and of course Silas.

Oh Silas. You will never make me like him. And Celia.

Lana is such a cutie pie, and really like Mateo, Declan and Zoey. I hope Declan and Zoey get together in the other books.

Honestly, no one gives Evelyn and Lillian credit. They were the ones who still kept their friendship throught the feud and tried to give their children a normal childhood.

And lastly, Stella and Jordan. They are true enemies to lovers and no one has ever written an enemies to lovers in a such a way.

The only fault in this was that it got a little slow, but i think it's a me problem. Can't wait to read more in this series!

(Sorry for this extra long review, just wanted to get my thoughts straight)

Manchild - Sabrina Carpenter

Trust me, it fits so many characters in this book. This book had me giggling and kicking my feet! Jayden is so talented and precise with what she writes. I've rated every single one of her books five stars, but this one has to be my favorite! I'm so ready for the next book, especially after that ending (and a bonus chapter that DIDN'T calm my anticipation.)
PLEASE go read this like right now! It's a masterpiece.

This is what enemies-to-lovers is. True hatred, not some small grudge, like these characters started off with a well-reasoned hatred for each other. We love to see it!
I was NOT expecting the ending we got.

This review is all over the place, just please go read it! This novel was so good!

i honestly don’t know what to rate this book. it was good plot wise and kept me engaged but it did have a few things in it that i don’t approve of.

rating: i honestly don’t know but my guts telling me 4.5 so ima round it down to a 4 ⭐️

Content: it had a lot of cussing in it and a half a f word (it was like me saying "Shad-“ instead of shades) and they did sleep together and it was outright mentioned later on. you can skip chapter 40 (fact check me on the chapter number cause i think im wrong) if you don’t want to read about it. its not detailed but still. they just wake up together and have a conversation but you can skip it if you want.

overall pretty good, could have done without the cussing or them sleeping togehter but pretty good like i said.

covers gorgeous though 👏 you did a great job on it Jayden.

This is the second book I’ve read by Jayden and I just need to say this anything she writes I will be reading even if it’s in a genre I don’t love. She overthrew Lauren Roberts and claimed Lauren’s spot as my third favorite author. Number two being Stephanie Garber and number one is Holly Black. Regardless Jayden skill is unmatched by those her age and many older than her. Her creativity and original story lines with familiar concepts makes for an amazing writer.
Love you Jayden keep up the great work!
