Ranked #1 Hot New Release in Contemporary Fantasy (Australia) The journey begins in Ascension—continue the story in Book 2: Reckoning, available now.
As a child, they tell you monsters aren’t real. That you shouldn’t be afraid of the dark. As a teenager, Marek Tomlinson learned it was bullshit—Monsters were real. And they loved the dark.
Now a New York City detective, Marek thought his worst days were behind him—until a string of brutal murders leaves him questioning everything. The evidence defies logic. The bodies are unrecognizable. And the deeper he digs, the more something inside him begins to stir—something ancient, volatile, and not entirely human.
Enter Agent Kaycee fearless, brilliant, and assigned by the FBI’s secretive Special Crimes Unit to take over the case. She’s seen things most people couldn’t handle. But Marek isn’t like most people, and when they begin working together, sparks start flying.
As they unravel the truth, Marek and Kaycee uncover an ancient conflict being waged in secret— between violent realms determined to conquer Earth, and Wardens sworn to stop them. With the barrier between worlds failing and supernatural creatures slipping through, Marek must confront the truth about who he is—and what he’s becoming.
He didn’t ask for this. He never wanted to be special. But the conflict is building towards all-out war, and Marek may be the only one who can stop it.
Perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews, Sarah J Maas, and Jim Butcher, the first book in The Wardens of the Rift series delivers epic battles, slow-burn romance, and a gritty, supernatural world on the brink of collapse.
My love for writing stories began in fifth grade. It all started with an assignment from my teacher, Mr. Garreffa who introduced us to something called “Squiggle Stories.” He’d hand us a half-finished drawing and give us two instructions: 1. Finish the drawing using your imagination. 2. Write a story inspired by it.
And let me tell you… my little brain exploded. I was hooked.
Like most things, the urge to write faded as I got older and life got harder. But that inner fifth grader never really went away. I daydreamed constantly—through high school, college, and even into adulthood—building elaborate worlds in my head while sitting at school, work and wherever.
Then, after being laid off for the first time in my professional career, I finally said, Screw it. I’m going to write my own story.
That was March of 2017, when I began writing Ascension. I hand-wrote the first ninety pages in an old college-ruled notebook. Around that time, I posted some very raw, unfinished excerpts online in a questionable writers’ chat (I genuinely couldn’t tell you what site it was). The feedback was unanimous: I had a hell of a story, but my prose was… not great.
So, I did the work.
I shelved the manuscript and devoured everything I could about writing. I attended lectures, watched videos, and read literature on the process. From Jerry B. Jenkins' videos on YouTube, to reading about the journey from seasoned self-published authors, I was determined to learn how to tell this story the way it deserved to be told, so it would grab readers by the throat and refuse to let go.
In March of 2025 (yes… it took a while), after building a career and becoming a parent, I decided, with no small amount of encouragement from a coworker (who later became my alpha reader), that I was finally going to do this thing. And four months later, in July, Ascension was published.
Writing is my single creative outlet. It’s also my escape, and my way of stepping out of the black-and-white world of my day job in Human Resources.
I live in Kansas with my adventurous four-year-old son, my supportive (and occasionally skeptical) wife, and more story ideas than I’ll ever have time to write. When I’m not daydreaming, drafting battle scenes, or fleshing out ancient mythologies, I’m chasing my kid, running solo on a trail, or trying to balance work, family, and the next book.
It’s a chaotic season consisting of late nights, exhaustion, and the occasional bout of writer’s block, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I always try to give a book time to gain traction, but this one gripped me from the start. It had me at the prologue. I love when a story pulls me in so deeply that I feel like I’m seeing the world through the characters’ eyes, and Scott absolutely delivers on that front. Urban fantasy with romance is becoming one of my favorite combinations. I adored Kaycee, she’s strong, fiery, and exactly the kind of FMC who holds interest. She is impossible not to love. This is a must-read, and I cannot wait for Book Two!
Listen, I live for gritty urban fantasy with high stakes, messy powers, and a broody lead who’s one bad day away from either saving the world or torching it to ash. And Ascension by Jay S. Scott? Hit me square in the chest with all of that—and then some. Marek Tomlinson is exactly my kind of main character: tortured past, haunted eyes, smart mouth, and just enough control over his powers to keep things dangerous. He's a New York City detective trying to make sense of a string of murders that are less “serial killer” and more “what fresh hell just came through the Rift?” And wow, does he feel real—gritty, exhausted, a little broken, but still somehow standing. I wanted to wrap him in a hug and also throw holy water at him, just to be safe. Enter Kaycee Gordon—his boss, his temptation, his probably-shouldn’t-but-I-really-want-to. She’s fierce, whip-smart, and gives serious “I don’t need saving, I am the storm” energy. The chemistry between them? Unspoken fire. No insta-love here. This is a beautifully torturous slow burn—the kind where every glance, every brush of skin, practically crackles. They’re both fighting fate, fighting feelings, and fighting monsters that literally eat people alive. The world-building? Chef’s kiss. It’s dark and sharp and feels like Ilona Andrews and Jim Butcher had a supernatural baby and handed it to Sarah J. Maas for emotional damage seasoning. There’s lore, there’s danger, and the Rift is a looming nightmare that somehow manages to feel both epic and intimate. The tension builds like thunder in the distance—you know the storm’s coming, and you can’t look away. And the writing? Tight. Fast-paced. No fluff, just grit, heart, and teeth. I devoured it in one sitting and stared at the ceiling afterward, whispering what now? like a tragic heroine. If you like your fantasy with a pulse, your heroes slightly unhinged, and your romances forged in fire and danger, Ascension is your next obsession. It gave me everything: action, heartbreak, yearning, and monsters that go bump in the night—and I need the next book yesterday. Jay S. Scott, I’m hooked. Just go ahead and take my soul now.
An urban fantasy read, bada** fight scenes, slow burn kind of love, gods and destiny. The world building in this is absolutely phenomenal and so detailed you feel like you’re fully emersed in all the monster mayhem. Our MC, is broody, hilarious and absolutely over it all but he gets the dang job done. Our FMC well she is an utter bada**, she strong fearless and keeps the banter hot and fun at all times. Should we cross this line? Should we not? — a personal favorite trope of mine and mwahhh it’s right there. So good .
The fights are amazing and the thoughts/ conversations while having them? You’re in for a fun ride. Personally I’m a fan of books that are fast paced it makes it harder for me to want to put it down and this book is FASSTT paced! So good I’m very excited for book 2!
Ascension, Wardens of the Rift kicks off with a gripping premise monsters are real, and detective Marek Tomlinson is about to face them again. Dark, gritty, and emotionally intense, this book blends supernatural action with a deeply human story about trauma, identity, and reluctant destiny.
Marek and Agent Kaycee are a compelling duo—both strong, scarred, and forced to trust each other as they uncover a hidden war threatening Earth. Their slow-burn chemistry adds depth without overpowering the plot.
The world-building is sharp and immersive, filled with ancient secrets and high-stakes battles. Perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews and Jim Butcher, this is a thrilling start to a series that promises heart, danger, and a touch of magic.
Jay S. Scott’s novel — Ascension, Book One in the Wardens of the Rift series, is an electrifying blend of fantasy and detective thriller that grips you from page one. The story plunges into a world where brutal murders defy logic, supernatural forces lurk in the shadows, and an ancient conflict threatens reality itself. The pacing is intense, with twists and revelations that keep you guessing.
Scott’s masterful world-building blends unique magic systems with terrifying villains, creating an atmosphere that’s both thrilling and immersive. The writing is sharp, the tension palpable, and the stakes sky-high. This isn’t just a fantasy tale—it’s a fast-paced, emotionally charged adventure that’s impossible to put down.
Highly recommended for fans of modern fantasy and suspenseful thrillers!
I received Ascension as an ARC. As a reader of primarily Fantasy Romance that usually steers clear of Urban Fantasy I was very pleasantly surprised by Ascension! The world building is very intricate and emmersive. The story itself is very unique and exciting full of action packed fight scenes, LAUGH OUT LOUD banter and a slow burn romance that is both realistic and gets you right in the feels!
Our FMC Gordon is a badass that isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and is the epitome of kick ass and take names, not a damsal in distress. Then in walks Marek our MMC that although he's her subbordinate, she can't seem to shake the attraction to him. Marek is a badass in his own right, confident, strong and always down for a good fight. He's drawn to Gordon as well but both are reluctant to cross lines and protect their secrets. There are memorable side characters that keep the banter bantering (Tucker is the King at deadpanned banter) and villians that you love to hate (the things that come out of Dharken Mohr's mouth)!! The growth and character arcs in both Gordon and Marek are very well written.
Ascension is full of action packed fight scenes, EPIC battles, page turning intrigue and a very realisticly written slow burn romance that doesn't overwhelm the story. Jay S Scott writes in way that is so descritive that the intricate world he's building jumps off the page. And the pacing of the story keeps you engaged and wanting more! I can't WAIT to read this entire series and am anxiously awaiting book 2!!
A gripping tale of oaths, destiny, and forbidden love.
This book blends fantasy, romance, and divine law in a world where Wardens guard Earth—and love can get you killed. When Warden Jax breaks the sacred vow, he vanishes, leaving behind a child who doesn’t know he’s inherited powers from a god.
Meryk’s journey from confused teen to supernatural detective is full of action, emotion, and intrigue. And the slow-burning bond with Warden Kaycee? Electric.
A powerful story about love, loyalty, and legacy. Can’t wait for the sequel!
It's literally hard to put down. Pesky things like work and sleep interrupting my reading time. Thank you for the adventure and for introducing me to the characters that came to life between the pages of this tale. I am looking forward to their continued endeavors.
"Ascension" by Jay S. Scott is a captivating fantasy read that earns a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. While the beginning felt a little bit all over the place, it quickly settles into a compelling narrative, propelled by its strong characters and an absolutely impeccable ending that leaves you clamoring for more.
One minor point of contention that kept it from a perfect score was the occasional repetitive retelling of events from different points of view. While gaining insight into multiple perspectives can be valuable, there were instances where it felt like rehashing information already presented. A more integrated approach, perhaps weaving both viewpoints into a single, comprehensive account, would undoubtedly enhance the pacing and flow, making for an even smoother read.
However, these minor quibbles are easily overshadowed by the novel's strengths, particularly its stunning conclusion. The ending is not just good; it's genuinely impeccable. It masterfully builds suspense and delivers a powerful cliffhanger that will have you eagerly anticipating the next book. Despite a slightly scattered start and some narrative redundancy, "Ascension" is a thoroughly enjoyable journey with a powerhouse ending that makes it well worth the read.
I had no idea what I was getting when I started reading, but WoW, I could not put it down. Great characters, great storyline. Marek is more than just a Warden! Looking forward to the next book!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Updated now finished reading at well past my bedtime... a combo of sleeping in the day and wanting to finish a good book meaning it's coming up for 2 am as I'm about to finish this update.
Okay I had a nap etc. and feel much better. I picked this up again and read it through, it was definitely a 'me' problem when I first tried it. I shouldn't have tried this to make me feel better, my unwell brain just obsessed over the 'niggles' in the plot, that were later explained.
I'm leaving in my initial thoughts, unwell & fuzzy brained as they were, because this is a good book. That it is, got through my fuzzy brain or I'd have DNF-d it.
I understand why the author switched who we were 'following' from time to time (it wasn't a focus change every chapter after the first few), I would still have preferred not to switch so much. This is because I would have liked to have spent longer with the um side characters we followed a little bit. MC was enjoyable to follow his story, but the others were also interesting so I wanted to see more of them as well. It's one of those cases when I wish the author had split into two books, with MC at the end of a book 1, then doing what came after as their own book, so we could have also spent more time with the team etc. Which is a 'me' thing when I find characters interesting I want more of them. But I'm someone who loves ridiculously long books when I enjoy the characters. Which now I think on it, is what you're supposed to do 'leave people wanting more'.
I liked the male MC. I liked the other characters. I thought the plot set up for the supernaturals being on Earth was very interesting and it didn't remind me of any other book, which is always a plus! I mostly liked the plot.* I especially liked that MC I felt that the 'real life' elements were mostly believable. ---- Which helps me immerse myself in a world where the supernatural etc. exists.
*There are some, mostly minor, plot elements that didn't 'hit' for me. The romance subplot was the main (& largest) one but that could change on a re-read for me, since I didn't want the love interest dead. (I'll up the rating if it does). It wasn't anything the writer did or didn't do with that plot which is why I just edited to up my rating to 4 stars because I know my current mood is why that element wasn't hitting.
Original thoughts (with some notes as applicable)
FYI [] Muliple first person POV. Edit = NOT first person. -- Brain blip with the book following multiple characters and too used to typing 'first person' re POV. [] At least one chapter (there now hence pausing to type this) that jumps back into the past 'after' the main POV character just basically gave the same info in the 'current' time period. (I'm skipping this one, all I needed to know was at age 17 he started to heal faster, as per the line stated, I don't need a flashback to his realising this. We didn't need both a tell and a show, in this case the 'tell' actually worked fine given the show breaks the current story just to go back 11 years to 'show' what has already been told!) I didn't mind the prologue being 29 years ago, but hope it stops will the IMHO unneeded flashback chapters.
Edit - okay apparently the '11 years prior' chapter does need reading, because more stuff happens than just the healing, but honestly why the author couldn't have just done: Prologue = 29 years ago, chapter 1 = 11 years and from chapter 2 start with the 'present day' is beyond me. ---- I'm not well & a bit fuzzy brained and I didn't realise this was multi POV when I chose to read and am having a bit of a hard time with the switching after each chapter, so don't need non linear plot on top! (although honestly I still 'got the gist' just from what the sort of main MC said in 'present day'. Edit 2 (READ this chapter. -- I went back when feeling better and read it and its definitely needed. I now feel it was more than the typical 'flashback' that seems to be explained in an earlier line by the male MC.
Plot [] The reasoning for
Back to reading.
[] I don't get 'why' they've involved the local police, beyond 'we need to for the plot' because they're the other POV characters.
[] The two cops should have 'seen' something in person re the case that would actually make sense for The plot as written makes no sense as to why the agent would turn up to involve them! The cops just think they're investigating murders performed by a serial killer. Also the case leads being
I'll give it a little bit longer and hope it stops being 'huh?'

First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Disclosure: I received an advance reader copy of Ascension by Jay S. Scott in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book.
My review of Ascension ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) "Of all the vices he could have chosen, he’d picked one of the worst..." The opening paragraph hooked me from the start—moody and atmospheric. Scott delivers an action-packed urban fantasy with a strong narrative voice, memorable characters, and immersive worldbuilding. The story starts with a sharp and atmospheric prologue and quickly plunges the reader into a world of mysterious forces, and hidden truths. The thing that really makes this book stand out isn’t just the action, it’s the emotional depth and character development. From the beginning, Marek is a compelling lead. His origin slowly unfolds through the early chapters in a way that feels natural, allowing readers to piece together his motivations for themselves. Watching his journey unfold—from a young man walking home from a midnight film to a warrior facing world-ending threats—is both engaging and emotional. His relationships, particularly with Tucker and Kaycee, add layers of tension, chemistry, and heartbreak. The evolving bond between Marek and Kaycee felt authentic, and their relationship grows more complicated in ways that make sense for their characters. Side characters are also engaging and fleshed out, not merely there for padding. The pacing is one of Ascension’s strengths. It alternates between present-day events and flashbacks at just the right moments, revealing backstory at just the right time. The use of chapter time stamps ("Meatpacking Plant—3:14am", etc.) helps anchor the reader and makes it easy to follow the action. The nonlinear structure adds to the suspense without leaving the reader confused. Scott’s prose strikes a good balance between vivid description, fast-paced action, and introspective character beats. The action scenes are choreographed clearly and are easy to follow. There's also a cinematic quality to the worldbuilding. The architecture of Arckus, the energy-laced battles, and the eerie tension of the Rift all feel visually rich and immersive. The book touches on themes of grief, transformation, trust, and betrayal—particularly in how Marek processes loss and discovers uncomfortable truths. The slow reveal of Marek’s deeper connection to ancient powers was handled well, with enough foreshadowing to reward close reading without giving everything away too soon. I especially liked the way Warden lore and the nature of Onos were dropped in without ever overwhelming the reader with huge info dumps. For the first half of this book, I thought it was a solid 4.5-star read. By the time I hit the midpoint cliff-hanger (you’ll know it when you get there), it jumped straight to a 5. That chapter was so intense, I had to put the Kindle down and take a minute. Scott masterfully builds tension and pays it off with emotional, sometimes gut-wrenching twists. This is one of those stories that is hard to put down. I genuinely can’t wait for the next book. Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy, slow-burn romance with memorable characters and high-stakes action.
Not once did it feel boring or like I should just skim through it. I really like how the story starts with the MMC’s background. Letting readers know about his background. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters, especially Marek and Gordon. Also the banter between Tucker and Chen, it brings some humor to the story. And there aren’t the usual boring unnecessary bs conversations happening, they’re almost always full of banter and in every chapter, something is happening. It’s fast-paced and the romance is slow.
I think the series got potential. I would definitely recommend this book. This book did not disappoint! I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read more from this author. Definitely an enjoyable read!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. What a GREAT read. This author is new to me and for this book to be the first in a new series. Dang, he hit it out of the gate! The world building is par none. So detailed. Each character is so fleshed out I feel as if I know each and every one of them. The battle scenes are done so well I can see each move in vivid detail. I am so excited for the next book. Here is hoping it is about Tucker; and of course, I want more of Kaycee & Marek. If you have not checked this series out do so, it is one to NOT be missed.

The first book in The Wardens of the Rift series delivers epic battles, slow-burn romance, and a gritty, supernatural world on the brink of collapse. Mr. Scott is a great storyteller. He gives us a fantastic first look of a new world with fascinating characters in his debut novel. It is well written on the edge of your seat tale that left me wanting to read more. I am looking forward to the next installment of the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I have to say that I have never read anything like it! Wow, a great mix of urban fantasy with science fiction. There are relationships starting between characters, and I am excited to she were they go! I recommend this to anyone looking for something unique and engaging, with a touch of romance. I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The beginning of this book jumped around a little bit, but it evened out and turned into a hell of a tale. Loved the characters and the brand new magic system that was introduced. There were some parts that didn’t flow really well, but that too evened out as the story went on.
The ending was epic and I loved the good vs evil thread that continued throughout the story. I think this is this author’s first book ever, and from that perspective, it’s very good.
This book has everything. Mystical creatures from the beyond, solid world building, love and a gut wrenching ending that tears you apart just to put you back together again.
I was left wanting more in the best way! The story has good character development and a solid conclusion. I'll be patiently waiting for the next book.
A dark, gripping read that blends detective grit with supernatural horror. Marek is a compelling hero, and his chemistry with Agent Kaycee adds spark to the tension. The twists kept me hooked, and the ending left me wanting more.
I happened across this book by chance but once I started reading it held me in its grip. Great world building with characters that are multi dimensional, I eagerly await the next instalment hopefully it won't take long .
Scott has created a complex, living breathing world that surrounds our own. Slowly, piece by piece he reveals the details of this world to us. The action is fast and intense, the characters likeable. A well written book.
I believe this is his first ever book and it’s intended as a series. There were some cliches in tropes and in writing style, but I still enjoyed it overall and look forward to see him develop his craft. They don’t allow a 3.5 but that’s what u give it.
This is remarkable and unique storytelling that stirs your imagination and immerses you in a world that reminds you we are probably not the pinnacle as we have convinced ourselves but maybe something that can be stepped on!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was well written and I look forward to the second book. J Scott wrote a great book and I look forward to more of his writings.
I’ve been trying to find a good book for a while. This was excellent. Great story telling and build up of the characters. I can’t wait for the next book!
