A control-freak police officer with a broken leg. A physical therapist running from heartbreak. And a small town determined to make them fall in love. A sweet, closed-door romance where emotional connection matters most.
Officer Michael Lawson's life runs on schedules, checklists, and perfect routine—until he crashes through the floor of an abandoned mill while busting a senior citizen poker ring. Now he's stuck with a broken leg, a dislocated shoulder, and the horrifying prospect of needing help from others.
Physical therapist Emma Winters came to Willowdale seeking a fresh start after her Boston life imploded. With professional competence masking personal chaos, the last thing she needs is an attraction to her newest patient—especially when he's the town's beloved police officer and everyone seems invested in their potential romance.
As Michael struggles with his unexpected dependence and Emma battles to maintain professional boundaries, Willowdale's residents launch a not-so-subtle matchmaking
• Michael's mother "coincidentally" appears wherever Emma goes • Therapy sessions mysteriously extend with no other patients scheduled • The entire town finds reasons to visit during their appointments • Every festival suddenly needs them as "co-chairs"
Between embarrassing medical mishaps, small-town gossip, and a growing attraction they can't ignore, Michael and Emma find themselves healing in more ways than one. But when physical therapy ends and they're forced to define their relationship beyond patient and therapist, they must decide if their connection is strong enough to survive without the town's meddling.
Sometimes recovery takes more than medical expertise—it takes falling through a floor to find solid ground.
In Willowdale, seasons change—and sometimes, healing begins exactly when you least expect it.
THE HEALING SEASON is the first in a heartwarming clean small-town romance series perfect for fans of Nicholas Sparks, Robyn Carr's Virgin River, and readers who love emotional journeys where professional boundaries blur into something deeper. This sweet, closed-door romance focuses on emotional connection rather than physical intimacy. Each book features a new couple while building a community you'll want to visit again and again.
Fall in love with Willowdale, where every season brings a new chance at love and healing.
I really enjoyed this book, even if it was an e-book lol. I really liked the natural progression of their relationship throughout, and how involved the town was with the situation. This isn't normally the kind of rom-com that I go for, especially the small town trope because quite a few people write it so unrealistically, but it honestly made the book funnier. Yes, in a small town, everyone knows everyone's business, but I like that they put that knowledge/gossip to use!! Was so excited to read this debut!
*Spoilers*
I really wish we would've seen more of their relationship before they got engaged, because it made that scene just little bit less satisfying. Not a big issue, just a personal opinion!
While reading The Healing Season, I felt like I was sitting in the gazebo in Stars Hollow. These characters were quirky and cute! The whole town knew everything about everyone. When Emma moves to Willowdale, the townsfolk make it their mission to set her up with their beloved Officer Lawson. It’s very convenient that Michael Lawson breaks his leg and needs physical therapy from the new physical therapist, Emma Winters. This was a super fun read and a great town to escape to.
A generally wholesome themed, romance aimed, mother knows best set up for two very similar yet uniquely different people, it is exceptionally clear to the reader where this story is going.
the author shows clear determination and commendable hard work in their writing flow, descriptions and underlying themed that there is no better outcome for these characters than what the author primarily has planned for them.
in that manner l, both the author and townspeople share a commonality that - well meaning as they are, with hearts and minds in the right place - regardless of personal boundary, individual preference or professional respect; they are assured of their own communal ingenuity through their determination to repeatedly and unapologetically throw Emma and Michael together throughout the book
What is some truly delightful character creation- at least for Michael and Emma, the sole proprietors of 3 dimensional characterisation - emphasised through delightfully natural chemistry shared humour and mutual frustration at their circumstances is unfortunately well overshadowed by the claustrophobia inducing nature of this town and its people.
a very well-intentioned and heartfelt communal plan could have assisted both the progression of the plot and the enjoyment of the reader if the subtlety and respect of autonomy was as prevalent as appointment disruptions or as well thought out as lunch ambushes
The potential held by background characters (such as Megan, and rookie James) absolutely lends itself to the enjoyment of the read and had the capacity to provide depth and meaning if personalities were not limited to that of obsessive matchmaking behaviour excluding all other background or occurances
there are quite touching beautiful moments, both Individually and together, paired with irresistible moments of humour between Emma and Michael that if further explored would explode in emotional, touching and meaningful writings in future
The authors overall potential and vision is easy to see, and if focuss is redirected further towards natural and effortless interaction between the main characters, to areas we get glimpses of - their evolution, their mindsets, their doubts, fears and honest moments - both the story and the character quality would increase exponentially to truly create a wildly successful book
I look forward to future pieces as the capability, potential, creativity and underlying skill of this author surely promise enjoyable pieces to come, given some polishing practice

Reading The Healing Season felt like wrapping myself in a warm blanket on a crisp autumn day, curled up by a fire with a cup of tea. It’s soft, it’s comforting, and it has just the right amount of emotional depth to make it memorable.
This is a closed-door, small town romance that follows Michael, a police officer with a broken leg and a rigid need for structure, and Emma, a physical therapist with a complicated past and a big heart. Their connection grows slowly and naturally over the course of Michael’s recovery, and I loved watching their relationship unfold. The contrast between Michael’s need for control and Emma’s flexibility made their dynamic feel real and believable, and I honestly saw bits of myself in both of them.
The pacing worked beautifully, mirroring Michael’s physical healing and their growing bond. It never dragged or felt too rushed, even though the timeline only spans a couple of months. Somehow, it still managed to feel solid and earned. Their chemistry was sweet and genuine, and I found myself truly rooting for them.
There’s just the right amount of small-town meddling to make things fun without being TOO over the top…think nosy neighbours, conveniently empty schedules, and co-chair “assignments” that may or may not be part of a bigger matchmaking plot. It’s all part of the charm. There’s a gazebo moment that nearly made me squeal (no spoilers, but it’s adorable), and several scenes that felt like classic rom-com movie moments with a Hallmark twist.
If you’re looking for a wholesome romance with Virgin River vibes, a bit of emotional healing, no smut, and a whole lot of heart, this one’s for you. Perfect for fans of sweet love stories that focus on connection, personal growth, and finding comfort in someone else…. and an ideal read for a cosy autumn afternoon. Enjoy.
Straight off the bat, this book will make you cry with laughter and steal your heart. it's honestly dont think i have laughed so much reading a novel. It's a small-town, closed-door romance that focuses on character connection and personal growth. Michael is a planner who loves control and organisation. Spreadsheets for everything type of character, who is disciplined in his life with routines. Even though Emma faced heartbreak in the form of public humiliation, she is still sweet, endearing with a big heart who appreciates discipline in recovery.
"Life rarely goes according to plan. Sometimes the floor gives way beneath you. What matters isn't how well you planned - it's how well you adapt."
The story didn't drag or feel too rushed/ quick. It went alongside Michael's recovery, so the connection between the two happened slowly. Making their chemistry feel genuine and real. Even with the whole town in on the Lawson-Winters scheme to get them together. The whole story was sweetly written, felt memorable, and wholesome for the most part. I personally would have liked to have seen a few more chapters on the continued relationship growth between Michael and Emma before we got to the Epilogue. Also the reason behind her turning down Jonathan as well as little more background, in terms of if her sister went school with Michael, how didnt Emma know him already. However, the slow but fast-paced novel, I can understand and appreciate why that didn't occur, which is totally fine. For a first novel from Piper, she has done exceptionally well and I look forward to reading more from her.
ARC Review – A Small-Town Gem You Won’t Want to Miss!
I had the absolute joy of reading Piper’s debut novel early, and let me just say—wow, what a stunning introduction to her storytelling! Thank you so much to the publishing house for the ARC; this one completely stole my heart.
Set in a quirky, tight-knit small town (the kind that butts into your business and plays secret poker on the side), this book delivers all the charm, warmth, and healing vibes you could hope for. At the center of it all are Emma—a physical therapist with a heart as big as her patience—and Michael, a wounded cop who’s got his life color-coded down to the spice rack (yes, really!).
This emotional closed-door romance is packed with heart, humor, and second chances. I laughed, I cried, and I highlighted lines I know I’ll come back to again and again. One that really stuck with me:
“Life rarely goes according to plan; sometimes the floor gives way beneath you. What matters isn't how well you've planned. It's how well you adapt.”
Emma and Michael’s story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, when everything feels like it’s falling apart, you’re actually landing exactly where you’re meant to be.
From the first page (yes, even the dedication!) to the final line, I couldn’t put it down. If you love small-town romances full of heart, hope, and the kind of laughter that sneaks up on you, this debut is calling your name.
Are you ready to fall in love with Emma, Michael, and the town that heals them? Because I promise—it’s unforgettable.
This was such a super cute and sweet romance! Y'all know I am a sucker for anything romance, but sprinkle a little rom-com in there and a dash of small town charm and I am HOOKED! I wasn't sure if I was going to be ok with a clean romance to be honest, but y'all I ATE THIS ONE UPPPPP! It's short, it's cozy, it's cute, it's funny! You have the small town cop who is such a control freak that he has everything mapped out and color coded in his life, he ends up with an injury and meets the new physical therapist in town who is VERY professional. Little does he know that she is there to start over fresh after a horrible break up in the big city! These two have some chemistry the moment they meet, which isn't in a professional capacity the first time, but yea little sparks flew when they first met. And if you're from a #SmallTown, you will totally understand how the town stays in their business and loves their fellow towns people. #PiperFinelyAuthor definitely portrayed the people of a small town perfectly! There is so much more that I want to say, but I don't want to spoil it for you! If you love small town romances, second chance romance, a little grumpy sunshine, closed door romance with a little slow burn dashed in there, make sure to check out The Healing Season (you can find it on KU!)! It released earlier this week!!!
Thank you Piper Finley for giving me an opportunity to read this ARC.
The Healing Season was such a cute small town, cozy, romance story. Michael is a police officer who ended up in a little bit of an accident and broke his leg. He is very meticulous about organizing, documenting, keeping track of things. To the extent of coming across as almost ocd. He loves his job and likes to stay busy, so recovery was going to be a challenge for him. Then he meets Emma. Emma is new to town after a break up from her boyfriend back in Boston. Emma is also Michaels physical therapist. When the whole town decidedly thinks they would be good for each other, every one collectively makes an attempt to get them together in some way. This story was so enjoyable! I enjoyed watching them fall for each other. Emma especially because she had the dilemma of having feelings for him, but trying to keep their relationship professional since he was still under her care. But the town is relentless and will not give up. Especially, his mother. At some points though, I thought the town meddling was too much. It was a little overbearing. This had to be the nosiest of town folk I've ever read about. The chemistry between Emma and Michael is very sweet. Emma just really understood Michael and all of his little quirks. This was a just a good clean, romance involving a very nosy small town. I recommend giving this one a read!!
I had the opportunity to read Piper's debut novel before release, and I have to say she has done an amazing job! The book is a small-town romance, and it is ready to steal your heart and make you cry with laughter. Think PT(physical therapist) with a large heart, a wounded cop who's colour-coded everything down to the Spices, and a small town charming in its very own way, healing those who never knew they needed to be healed, butting into everyone's business and having secret poker games 😉(you'll have to find out for yourself!)
This book was incredible, from the dedication to the final sentence. I laughed, and I cried happy tears. The character building is well-written. Emma and Michael have made it easier to see that it's okay when your life gets turned around.
"Life rarely goes according to plan; sometimes the floor gives way beneath you. What matters isn't how well you've planned. It's how well you adapt" because "sometimes when you're falling, you land exactly where you're supposed to be" 😭💗
If you love emotional, closed-door romances packed with heart, hope, and second chances—this one's for you. 💛🫶🏼 I for one couldn't put it down once I read the dedication! Are you ready to fall in love with Emma and Michael?
After a devastating injury in the line of duty, police officer Michael is left facing a long road of recovery and physical therapy. Enter Emma, the calm, determined therapist who’s ready to help him get back on his feet—literally and emotionally.
Their relationship starts with tension and teasing, but slowly transforms into something tender and real. The banter between them is gold (especially the Jell-O conversations!), and their emotional connection shines through without needing any steam.
This book is a beautiful reminder that love can grow in even the most painful seasons of life. Watching Michael and Emma support each other, grow closer, and finally get engaged was such a rewarding journey.
Highly recommended for fans of slow-burn, emotionally rich romances with heart and healing at the center.

Michael and Emma's story will have you rooting for them from the beginning right alongside the whole town. Yes, the whole town is involved in Michael's love life including his mother. His mom as endearing as she is.. is a helicopter mom. I know she's got good intentions because I, myself, have a helicopter mom as a parent.
Michael and Emma get put together for committees, she is assigned as his PT after his fall at the mill, and honestly, the whole town makes sure they are around each other nonstop. Sometimes suffocating their time with one another.
If you're looking for a closed door, cozy, small town romance where there is little to no conflict add this to your TBR, immediately.
I had the opportunity to read this book before release to support Piper’s novel debut and I can definitely say that I was captivated by the main characters story. A small-town romance between a wounded cop and a PT 👀👌🏼 count me in!
I love how the story starts with the man’s point of view on chapter 1. That was a first for me and I liked it. The way she uses deep meaningful messages throughout the book that I can deeply relate to is so well thought of. This book made me laugh for sure with his mother 😅 it’s just so relatable with day-to-day life with moms out there, haha.
I definitely recommend this story if you’re interested in a heartfelt love story with healing, laughter, love, comedy and more.
This is most cozy story I ever read. In my eyes, it actually hidden gem that I never expected. It actually funny but also romantic. The chemistry and also the progress of their relationship is a chef's kiss. I never expect it was this her debut story but I believe she should be part of the best author label. I will recommend this book to my friends who are into Rom-com.
This was exactly what I needed! I couldn't put this down. I enjoyed the change of pace.
life rarely goes according to plan. Sometimes, the floor gives way beneath you. What matters isn't how well you've planned it's how well you adapt.. that quote is going to stick with me for a while!
ARC I loved this book! It is super sweet and cute! I ATE it up! I do love the small town rom com vibes. Everyone knows everyone else business and its so fun! It was a pleasure to read this book and I will def be rereading this on KU soon!
