Ivan Antonovich (real patronymic Antipovich) Yefremov (Russian: Иван Ефремов; April 22, 1908–October 5, 1972), last sometimes spelled Efremov, was a Soviet paleontologist, science fiction author and social thinker. He originated taphonomy, the study of fossilization patterns.

Greece! Haeteras! Sparta! Crete!! Macedonia!!! Alexander the Great! Midnight trysts! Tantra?! Women who were free and interesting and beautiful and learned to the point of polymathy! Weird rituals! Temples and High Priestesses! Have I told Greece?! Have I already mentioned how I love it? Have I freaking told how god-wonderful it was? People larger than life with all those outsized brains and advanced ideas and maddening passions! Where did they get all that time and stamina (!) to do all that stuff? Science that we hear about even nowadays! Snakes and slaves and wars and rape? Have I told you I love Greece unconditionally?

A beautiful story. Based in Ancient Greece! And I'm a sucker for all things Ancient Greece. I have been conditioned that way (read loads of stuff on that civilization since early childhood! of my own volition!), so I beg forgiveness for my gushing! I can't help it.

I read it in original when I was a teen and I had extremely mixed feelings about it. There is some cringiness to this reading. Although, maybe/probably/likely that's just me. Let's not forget I read it while really young))). Still, my consensus (with myself, go me and me!) was that this novel is hands-down wonderful.

I'm not sure how feminists would feel about it. But anyone who likes women in a sense deeper than the modern 'women are smaller men with boobs' approach (kudos to Herr Dresden!) will enjoy it.

There are some historical improbabilities and anomalies that might have been inaccuracies. Nevertheless, it's fascinating how a guy took a bunch of historical material (on women, of all things!) and regurgitated it all in a way to produce this masterpiece of a novel. Was that his take on erotic dreams? His way of producing a personal Galatea (this one in writing)? I don't know but it felt like something way deeper than the usual loosely based on history novels.

Historical fiction that gives insight into Alexander of Macedon, his campaigns across the Ecumena (civilized world) and beyond, and the men and women around him, including the eponymous courtesan (haetera), Thais. Set in the 3rd century BC, the author brings many areas of history to life pretty well, cultural, religious, martial and some political. We also get to know Ptolemy, one of Alexander’s closest friends, general and counselor, the founder of the Egyptian Ptolemaic Dynasty and the Library of Alexandria. He lived much longer than Alexander.

The author made some weird choices in how he constructed the book, at times having action related in letters or stories of travelers, other times in person, or by actors after the fact (once they are present). Many times these choices were irksome and keeps me from rating the book higher.

But it does relate an interesting story pretty fully with an interesting cast of characters, so a solid 3 stars.

I first read this book years ago, and I greatly enjoyed re-reading it. This is so much more than a love story or the story of a woman. Efremov’s true mastery is in combining explicit philosophical contemplations with a spellbinding narrative. There are a lot of discussions about philosophers and art. The role of women in different societies is discussed although the role of hetaeras at the time was idealized. Their independence was rather limited. Other women had even less.

At one point, Efremov writes about the sadness one might experience when we encounter the beauty of songs, paintings, or sculptures. In our popular culture, dominated by fast food for the body and superficial, quick bites of information for the brain, how often do we pause to reflect on the poignancy that art could inspire? I’d almost forgotten how philosophical and how deep Slavic literature could be, and this book was a welcome reminder of that.

Удивительно, как мало я слышала об этой книге, но как она достойна внимания и возможности быть известной всему миру!
Редко встретишь такое интересное и умное повествование про античный мир от лица женщины, которая могла бы стать царицей и женой Александра Македонского!
Таис - гетера, т.е. женщина-гейша, в какой-то степени. Она подруга, она советчица, она утешит в любви и расскажет полезную информацию, т.к. владеет лучшим образованием, новостями, знакомствами. И она получает за это деньги, но имеет право выбирать, кого к себе подпустить, а кого нет. В античные времена в Греции было две судьбы для женщины со способностями - либо быть женой, либо идти в гетеры, причем у вторых открывались двери к образованию, путешествиям, общению с философами, представителями искусств.
Повидав много стран и городов, Таис стала настоящим философом сама, помогая и напрявляя людей вокруг, но ее собственная судьба всегда готовила ей сюрпризы, ведь так переменчива жизнь царей и их приближенных!

В общем, мало что можно тут написать, не заспойлерив, поэтому просто скажу, что эта книга - это хороший кандидат стать лучшей книгой 2013 года лично для меня.

"Таис" - это великолепный пример романа, написанного талантливым писателем и, одновременно, человеком, любящим и знающим историю.
Вы с головой погружаетесь в Античность - тот её момент, когда Александр Македонский совершал свой великий поход, а в Рим вели ещё далеко не все дороги. Искусство, философия, быт, мифы - каждому аспекту уделено достаточно внимания, и в итоге получается обширная панорама.
Масштабы происходящих в романе событий грандиозны. Но среди этой эпичности нисколько не теряется образ самой Таис - настолько он сочен и здорово прорисован. Таис - воплощение грации и женственности, но при этом - сильная личность. Она служит богине любви, но там, куда ведёт её судьба, за пределами родной Эллады, всё ещё властвуют жестокие древние божества.
Познакомившись с юной Таис на первых страницах, вы пройдёте вместе с ней длинный путь, полный радостей и потерь и, конечно же, не раз восхититесь ею.

Yes, a masterpiece. Very much was already written by a great number of users here, so I will add only a bit of what I read in my edition of this book. By reading other opinions I guess that not all versions have an introduction by the author as mine has.

In many comments here I read that the first section of the book is long, uninteresting, slow paced or even boring, but Ivan Efremov was perhaps anticipating this approach and has an interesting explanation for that. He states that in the first 2-3 chapters he takes a lot of effort in filling the story with Greek names, expressions and descriptions, so the reader can feel him/herself as a visitor of another nation, as if we were travelling to a distant country, being so surrounded by unknown language, incomprehensible culture and different architecture.

This book wanders between art, philosophy and humanism, and therefore I strongly recommend it to everyone.

When I was reading I thought this is just history and difficult to read. And it really takes me too long to finish it. Yesterday I finished. Today I already miss it.
This is not only a historical story as it seems; this book is about beauty, philosophy, believes, feelings, loyalty, human relationships...

This book should be read at the age of fifteen, not more. There’s a lot of beautifully arranged words, the style is elegant, but main characters are not believable. It’s kinda boring, reading about an ideal person, who cannot exist. Even though I love historical literature, this one is too naive to be taken seriously... Three stars for all the precious nature descriptions.

At first I really wasn't impressed with the storyline...it seemed very slow and not that interesting. Half way through though it got intense and I started enjoying it much more. However, I feel that many storylines were started and never finished and this left me with a bit of disappointment. I was lloking for a more detailed description of Thais's relationships with Ptolemy and Alexander mentally-wise. Also, the whole novel had a very down-to-earth feeling to it, while the ending was very fantasy-like and it didn't tie with the rest of the story. Overall, I liked it and would reccomend it if you are willing to read through the first 150 pages without losing fate that it will get better. It will.

Роман об афинской гетере мне местами очень понравился, а местами утомил. Роман достаточно точно передает все основные события жизни Александра Македонского и Птолемея I. Ефремов с легкостью окунает нас в то время с его обычаями и традициями. Некоторые монологи героев навсегда запомнятся. Например, рассуждения о правах и роли женщин в обществе. Да, речь идет об обществе двухтыс��челетней давности, но ситуация не сильно-то изменилась. Мне кажется, что ефремовская Таис была бы выдающейся и запоминающейся личностью и в наши дни. Ее так же окружали б скандалы и интриги. Возможно, в наше время она б стала подругой Илона Маска и отправилась б на Марс.

Автор больше историк, чем писатель. В книге слишком много информации, которая, на мой взгляд, излишняя и утомительная в художественном произведении. Автор употребляет какие-то сложнообразованные слова, потом их начинает уточнять и объяснять, все это громоздится друг на друга... Но видно с какой любовью и старанием написана книга, этому нельзя не отдать должное.

Главной героиней в этой книге является прекрасная гетера, у которой есть особое предназначение и её жизнь очень богатая, разнообразная и с множествами приключениями. Насыщенная жизнь Таис Афинской богата верной дружбой как с женщинами так и с мужчинами, тайными открытиями, древней историей Эллады, Египта и Персии и Индии, таинственными учениями древних жрецов и жриц, а также любовью и страстью даже с самим Александром Великим.

Этот роман - это ода о прекрасной и умной женщине.

В останнэ я перечитувала цю книгу років в 15, а до того читала її знову і знову. Це той випадок, через півжиття текст справдяє вже інше враження, хоча читаючи, я бачу які сліди він залишив в моєму світосприйнятті і навіть сприйнятті себе. Бо в автора тут багато про ролі жінки в житті, але всі вони зводяться до того чи іншого спосубу буття у відносинах з чоловіком.
Якщо в дитинстві я була в захваті від головних героїнь, то тепер мені було прикро бачити, що напрочу розумні, свідомі, культурні жінки можуть лише обслуговувати потреби чоловіків, не творити самостійно, а лише бути музами чи моделями (в широких сенсах).

I love this author and I love this book. I don't remember how many times I've read it over the years, but this is a pure gem.
This is a story of the most famous hetaera of Greece, wife of Ptolemey, who conquered Egypt and a friend and companion of Alexander the Great; she was the woman who burned Persepolis.
The novel was written in 1972, and this is a pure testament to the power of women through the history.
There is mysticism and deep historical research, philosophers and old gods, erotism and pure intelligence.
One of those books to read before you die.

Прекрасная книга. Очень романтичная и увлекательная история любви Таис Афинской и Александра Македонского. Не смотря на то, что основная идея и персонажи взяты из исторических источников, остается только гадать на сколько точны с исторической точки зрения события, которые происходят в книге. Так как они далеки от реальности, то не стоит относиться к этому произведению как к историческому роману. Всем рекомендую.

This is the fictionalized story of Thais, Greek hetaera to Ptolemy (one of the Generals of Alexander the Great), and eventual queen of Egypt. “Hetaera” loosely translates as courtesan, or high-class and generally well-educated prostitute, who had power over who she would accept as a lover. It’s an ambitious work, attempting to recreate the cultures of the world in ~330 B.C. and describe its mythologies, religions, and rites in great detail.

The translation by Maria K. is clearly a labor of love, but it’s also amateurish. Her translation of the book into English is “with an accent”, with occasional grammatical errors, the illustrations she adds to start chapters are not very artistic, and her reader’s reference at the book’s outset would have benefited far more from the inclusion of a map and a basic glossary than what’s in there. Footnotes in the text are few and far between; ancient place names are footnoted at page 500+ in a small bunch; the reader really could have used those throughout to avoid having to turning to the Internet, which I did.

She is a little hampered by the original; too many Greek words are used, almost as if Yefremov was trying to show off his erudition, as opposed to furthering the story line. His transitions in the plot are uneven and abrupt; it’s a raw, unpolished work. Furthermore, while historical fiction is always tough, this one rang false in many places, ascribing too much power and influence to Thais, among other things.

And yet, the blindness of Alexander’s quest comes through, goaded on by poor advice from Aristotle and others on how small the earth was, the book brings forward a feminist message, and one does learn a thing or two about the ancient world along the way. It should have been tightened up considerably on all fronts though, and I’d only recommend it if this era is of particular interest.

If you read the first ten per cent of the book ten times, you would be no better off than if you read the book to the bitter end, like I did. There is no sense of progression throughout the book. At the beginning as in the end, people seem to lie about, prattling on about what a fine woman Thais is.

This is mostly a book about men admiring the sexual beauty of the very best of women. It’s done well, but it just isn’t a subject which can hold my interest through hundreds of pages.

Poor Thais spends much of the book bereft of clothes. It’s a wonder that she didn’t catch a chill and die at one place, if not another.

Давно планировал почитать это произведение. Однако впечатление более чем двоякое. С одной стороны, ценно как памятник эпохи. Даже так как памятник определенного образа мыслей, в том числе о роли женщины (и я не столько о древней Греции, сколько об эпохе автора). Так же содержит некоторые интересные сведения в плане занимательной филологии и этимологии. Не скажу, что истории, которая подаётся скорее в весьма идиллическом виде. Общее же ощущение, - как от не самого лучшего женского романа, написанного учителем истории древней Греции. Надеюсь, никого сильно не обидел. Как есть.

I read this book when I was about twelve or so, with my best friend at the time (we'd take turns turning the pages) and have reread it many times since, always finding something new in the lyrical narrative and fascinating characters. At one time, this was my favorite book bar none. Years (and more books) have since removed it from that position, but it still remains in my Top 10, and probably always will.

I liked this book , I found it on a book shelf in my aunts house and I think it was first romance book I ever read and back them my ears went red because it was the closes thing to hot steamy history romance I ever read back then. I know now books are way different but back then it was something. I liked the portrait of the strong women that changed everything around her and had success in many battles that men with swords could not.

Увлекательное описание жизни известной гетеры от момента ее знакомства с Александром Македонским. Было очень интересно познакомиться с авторской версией того, какой была Таис Афинская, которая по легенде инициировала сожжение македонской армией Персеполиса. Роман был бы великолепным, если бы не периодические философско-религиозные отступления Ефремова о верованиях современников Александра Великого в различных частях света.

В детстве мне это казалось крутейшей эротикой ;)
Но сейчас не смог читать вообще. Как будто смотришь фильм китайского режиссера - вообще непонятно что все эти люди делают.
Конечно, наверно так и должен воспринимать современный человек то, что происходило две тысячи лет назад - раз мы даже китайцев не понимаем, которые не так уж удалены от нас культурно.
С другой стороны - это же не научная работа, а популяризация. Должно быть понятно и интересно современному читателю.
