Liz Norwood is a writer and editor whose work explores the connections between creativity, place, and perception. A Bay Area native and longtime summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard, she helps nonprofits, small businesses, artists, and authors tell their stories and share their big ideas.
Together with her husband, painter Paul Norwood, Liz co-created Away to See: Martha’s Vineyard, the first in the Away to See series of art-and-travel books.
Blending Paul’s loose, gestural paintings with Liz’s lyrical vignettes, the Away to See series celebrates the ritual of artfully observing and recording the everyday through paint and pen, and invites readers to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the wonder in new and familiar places.
More books in the series, such as Away to See: California Coast, Away to See: Côte d’Azur, and Away to See: Islands of Italy, are in the works.
This was an interesting read. It gives an adventurous look on Martha’s Vineyard more than the exclusive place I’ve heard about. Granted I didn’t know much to begin with, but it certainly was not what I was expecting, and that was a pleasant surprise. The pictures were beautiful and I liked the main color palette. The combination of the complementary colors (orange and blue) gives a peaceful yet intense feeling of awe.. Sadly, I wasn’t keen on the poetry side. Maybe it’s just personal taste. I tend to enjoy rhyme in stanzas and that was missing. I just couldn’t connect well with it. To sum up I enjoyed the visual side of the book more than the poetry but I still think the book is a satisfying experience.
