Tuesday's Blues

Rate this book
Tuesday’s Blues follows Tuesday Abara, a struggling musician hoping to make it big in the big city of Obscuris, despite spending more time spiraling in self-doubt than actually booking gigs. Her love life hasn’t fared any better, either. She’s been ghosted way more than she’d like to admit, and she’s never had a steady partner. Her current romantic prospect seems to only call her after the sun’s gone down...

When Tuesday's recluse of a roommate disappears under, well, let’s call them "mysterious circumstances", Tuesday’s got to forge a plan to make her rent…and fast. That’s when she summons the monster under her bed.

Shadow’s a centuries-old creature of the night, bound to the mortal world through ancient dark magic...and she’s also the monster who’s lived under Tuesday’s bed her whole life. As Shadow fumbles her way through odd jobs, the two take on a third roommate: Claudette, a bougie, formally rich-witch who's been cut off by her wealthy parents until she passes her Display of Magical Talents Exam.

Together, the trio navigate magical side hustles, supernatural dating disasters, and dwindling finances in their cramped apartment…all while trying to make rent.

As a woman who suffers from depression and social anxiety, I’ve made it my mission to candidly share my experiences with the hopes of helping others dealing with the same. This extends into my fiction work, where I pen tales about woeful women trying their best, with a surrealist, magical touch. Inspired by surrealist authors like Haruki Murakami, Sayaka Murata, and Lemony Snicket, my stories are dark and humorous with a hint…well, a bunch…of absurdity.

Tuesday’s Blues by Jacque Aye had me confused, entertained, and stressed all at the same time because Tuesday is out here moving like consequences are optional. She is trying to make her music work while also dealing with powers she does not fully understand, a love life that is messy as hell, and situations that keep spiraling way past her control. Tuesday is funny without trying to be, but she also makes you want to grab her shoulders and ask what she thought was going to happen next.

What really carried this book for me was the people around her. Honora is giving soft life energy mixed with mystery, but there is always this feeling that something deeper is going on there. Hazel is one of those characters you don’t fully trust even when she is smiling in your face, and Bayo is over there dealing with his own chaos while somehow still getting pulled into Tuesday’s mess. Then you’ve got Claudette entering the picture adding even more pressure, and Shadow is sitting in that space where you know her presence matters even if everything about her still feels slightly out of reach. Suddenly Tuesday’s world is not just messy, it is crowded with people who all seem to want something from her.

The wild part is how quickly everything shifts from music drama to something way bigger and more dangerous without warning. Tuesday is constantly caught between wanting to live her life and being pulled into things tied to her past, her family, and whatever is watching her from the shadows. Even when she is trying to focus on her goals, something always interrupts it, and half the time it is people she should not be trusting in the first place. By the end, I was fully locked in on her story and still questioning who is actually on her side and who has been playing her from the beginning.

This book was SO fun and I had a great time reading it. It balanced some rather goofy paranormal situations with some incredible realism. And I LOVED the little sections of graphic novel/comic book illustrations. I really hope the next books has more of those 😄😄😄😄

Tuesday’s Blues is such a great, weird little book. Tuesday is a singer whose music is somewhat sleep inducing (she is working on making it more lively!) and for financial reasons has resorted to enlisting the help of then monster under the bed (Shadow, who starts playing the drums!) while navigating the paranormal world around her, and some depression and mood issues.

I loved this book because it doesn’t follow a typical plot structure but moves along so well. It also includes some awesome comics inside. I will definitely be reading more from this author asap! Thank you colored pages book tours for the ARC!

This was so good! It was too short and could have used more depth and world building, but it’s imaginative and full of twists.

This story was SO much fun and packed in so much for such a low page count. My favorite parts were the character personalities and the fantastic dialogue between them. I am pretty picky about dialogue. It’s HARD to nail the way we actually speak. But the author gives each character such authentic voice that it feels like talking to real people.

Also, a battle of the bands with monsters?! Yes. So much yes. It’s why I bought the book. I seriously hope this story continues!

Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Fun, weird in the best way, and really creative. I loved the mix of monsters, music, romance, and humor it felt fresh and different from anything I’ve read recently. The story has a lot of personality and kept me engaged the whole way through, even when things got a little chaotic.

Tuesday needs therapy lol

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though Tuesday does remind me of a few of my exes lol. I’m definitely rooting for Tues and Honora to be more than friends, hopefully we get to see more of their romance in the next book! This was a great read and I can’t wait for the next one🤍

A quick read that features an unlikely trio that come together to perform in a battle of the bands competition in the hope of securing rent money.

Tuesday Abara is a struggling musician who dreams of making a career as a singer in the big city. Unfortunately, her singing always puts her audiences to sleep and it's hard to make ends meet with zero cash flow. When her roommate, Bella, mysteriously disappears, Tuesday knows it's time to go job hunting. Along the way, she meets and unlikely group of friends. With the help of her new friends Shadow and Claudette, Tuesday hopes they can win the local battle of the bands competition and make some money while also progressing her music career.

I thought the premise of this one sounded fun. After all, it follows a struggling musician who is just trying to pay her ridiculously expensive bills in a world full a magic. However, I found this one to be very disjointed and I didn't really feel a connection to any of the characters.

I think the coolest part about this book is the wide variety of monsters that coexist amongst humans. There are harpies, grim reapers, merfolk, vampires, monsters that live under the bed, witches, chupacabras, and so much more. The diversity of the monsters was really fun, but there is literally no lore for this world nor an established magic system of any kind.

Tuesday's struggles are honestly super relatable. The world is scary expensive these days and literally paying for rent, groceries, and other essentials is quite literally a conflict in and of itself. It's not a surprise that our thirty-year-old protagonists are struggling to make ends meet while trying to follow their creative endeavors.

The characters in this one had the potential to be awesome, but they all fell flat for me. Everyone's backstory is so minimal it was hard to get to know any of them. Tuesday has at least a little bit of history with us learning about some of her one-night stands and her dad, but none of this information really made me like her. Shadow is very innocent for a demon that lives under a bed. She knows very little about the world and is learning about all of its wonders. Shadow pretty much seemed like a hot dog addict and that was pretty much it. Claudette is a witch who was formerly very rich but was recently disinherited due to her failing out of college for the third time. Her character may have been cool, but we didn't get to see her for very long. She's a spoiled rich brat though, so chances are I'd still dislike her. I hope that all three of them would gain more depth in future installments, but I don't think I care about this story enough to pursue more books.

This book ends very suddenly and honestly struggles from pacing the whole way through. This book isn't long, but it feels like I read a story on fast forward and it skimmed over all the bits that could have been really interesting, such as Tuesday's date with Honora. It also struggles to stay in one person's perspective, which could have been alright, except that ninety percent of this book follows Tuesday and nobody else.

This book included some comics throughout, which would have been fun if they literally connected to anything going on in the book. Literally half the comics were sex scenes, which was also a bummer. I feel they should have been included at the end rather than scattered throughout, because they were random moments that didn't happen during the story's main timeline.

Overall, I thought the premise of "Tuesday's Blues" sounded cute, but it really let me down in the end. I wasn't a huge fan of any the characters, found the chapters to meander from one event to next willy nilly, and really disliked the humor style. I can't say I enjoyed my time with this one, but I did relate to Tuesday's struggles. The world is expensive and it's hard to keep following one's dreams, but she went about everything in the wrong way. I definitely will be putting this one out of sight out of mind and never thinking about it after the book tour I'm a part of is over.

This was such a fun fantasy! I loved following Tuesday, Shadow, and Claudette as they struggle to find work and pay rent.

The world was so unique. I loved how humans and many supernatural creatures lived together and had special laws and regulations.

I also really enjoyed the humor, which worked perfectly with the way the world was set up. The ending was so fast-paced and intense.

The pages of art throughout the book were so cute and a nice break between chapters.

Overall, this was so much fun, and it would be really cool to see from this world!

Thank you to Colored Pages Book Tours and the author for the ARC! All opinions are my own.

Very fun, very short. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s very much. I guess it would be called a slice of life because you’re following, like I would say, a couple days following Tuesday in her event to pay her rent and the people she meets along the way, and then also her dealing with commitment issues. It’s all very fun and funny, and I look forward to the next one.

I can't believe I forgot to do my biased rating! Haha, I had fun with this novella. I love writing short little literary snacks. If you enjoy weird tiny books about perpetually sighing women who sleep with monsters...this is the book for you!

Thank you for reading.
