In this transformative book, artist and recovering self-critic Joy Prouty helps you see that it's not selfish to be kind to yourself--it's sacred. Through poetic stories of emotional alchemy, Joy untangles what has been keeping you stuck in your head rather than present in the moment. She helps you identify the unconscious habit of invalidating yourself, then gently guides you toward kinder, more compassionate perspectives of your life so that you can live with confidence, presence, and strength.
By learning to love the parts of yourself that you once shamed or abandoned, you will be liberated to embrace the uniquenesses of others, showing that self-compassion is not only a personal practice but a holy act of radical inclusion.
If you want to stop being who others expect you to be while putting your own needs and desires on hold, discover how the practice of self-compassion as a lifestyle and an art can change everything.
This was not what I expected. I’m not a Christian and had not realized this was a christian publisher. I try not to review christian books because I’m not the target audience and don’t want to harm authors ever. That said this only very lightly touched on biblical themes. This focused on healing from trauma using photography. I found the idea interesting that how we see ourselves physically contributes to our mental wellbeing. This had some light use of mantras which I enjoyed. Overall I found this to be an interesting exploration of how photography could aid in repairing or own view of ourselves.
This audiobook is narrated by Joy Prouty. An author narrating their own work is hit or miss in my experience. In this case I felt it added rather than detracted from the overall message and theme.
Thank you to author Joy Prouty, RBMedia, and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook. All opinions and viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.
Self compassion compass is a topic I can read/listen to and never get tired of. Joy's perspective through the art of photography was an interesting take that also made me realize how often we do this without realizing it. While it has some spiritual components it definitely is a book even someone not of faith could appreciate. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishing house for this audio ARC.
This book was wonderful! I don’t have a photography background, but Joy makes the art prompts accessible for all! The book itself is a work of art, but the words are calm, too.
