As the middle child of the Shanahan family, Zaira does her best to keep the peace. She doesn't share her dream of becoming a published author with her family to spare herself their disapproval. When she's caught in a scandal involving the local matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna, she must put her storytelling ability to good use and feign a match with him to avoid wagging tongues and her parents' anger.
Feeling the growing pressure to marry as a well-known, yet single matchmaker to St. Louis's Irish community, Bellamy reluctantly agrees to a temporary match with Zaira. But even though the matchmakers in his family might be able to find love for others, they have a history of disastrous relationships for themselves. When secrets and danger force Zaira and Bellamy to work together, is it finally the matchmaker's turn to be lucky in love?
Hedlund delivers another captivating romance with sizzling chemistry in this romantic conclusion to her beloved matchmaking series.
Jody Hedlund is the best-selling author of over fifty books and is the winner of numerous awards. She writes sweet historical romances with plenty of sizzle. Find out more at jodyhedlund.com.
Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.
Okay wow. This book was so good. I could not put it down. The chemistry was off the charts and the kisses were even better. These two had sparks every time they were on the page.
Zaira is an undercover author who needs some real-life romantic experience so she can write better. Bellamy is dealing with a lot of pressure on his latest matchmaking job, and if he messes it up, it could hurt the whole family business.
They run into each other and make a small deal. Bellamy gives her a hug or a kiss to inspire her writing, and she helps him figure out his toughest client. It should have been simple. But then they get caught together. The rumors start right away. To keep things from blowing up and to protect both their reputations, they agree to say they are courting each other. And just like that, the fake relationship... and then engagement starts!
They’ve known each other for years, but this is the closest they’ve ever been. Bellamy keeps his guard up because he has always liked her, but he believes love is not meant for him. While Bellamy constantly objects to them getting too close Zaira has always felt drawn to him... making their arrangement fun for her but also confusing and risky.
Their “practice” moments slowly turn into real feelings, which were never part of the plan. A fake courtship sounded easy, but pretending gets harder when everything between them starts to feel real. Bellamy thinks his family is cursed in love, so he tries to push her away. Zaira tries to hold back too, knowing if she reveals she truly has feelings for him he will push her away.... but all she wants is to be near him.
Can the matchmaker accept that his perfect match may be Zaira...Can Zaira's happily ever after finally be found outside the pages of her stories and be with Bellamy?!
The tension in this book was everything. So many “I hate that I love you” moments, and I ate them up. Every time they let their walls drop, I was obsessed. Now I need to go back and read the earlier books.
This was a full six-star read for me.
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
I received an advance reader copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was so excited for Bellamy to get his own story!! Who doesn’t love a fake relationship trope? Bellamy and Zaira find themselves in a pickle and are forced in to a fake match. Zaira craves adventures, will Bellamy be able to keep her safe? Will they hold on to their own secrets or will those secrets tear them apart?
Jody’s characters are so endearing! The attraction and tension between Bellamy and Zaira can almost be felt through the pages. I love how Bellamy cares for Zaira and has always had such a connection with her. Their love story does not disappoint! I need more books about them!
I’ve so enjoyed Jody Hedlund’s A Shanahan Match series, and while I’m sad to see it come to an end, Marrying the Matchmaker is a perfectly romantic, exciting conclusion. I’ve been looking forward to Bellamy’s story since book one, and Zaira was such an interesting character, too. This book is unique and captivating, and I can’t wait for more from Hedlund! 4.5/5 stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Marrying the Matchmaker (A Shanahan Match Book #4) by Jody Hedlund Published by Bethany House
Ohhh, that first kiss… WOW. 😍🔥 The chemistry between Zaira and Bellamy absolutely leapt off the page.
Zaira, the middle Shanahan sibling, is a peacemaker with a secret dream of becoming a published author—one she keeps hidden to avoid criticism. When a scandal forces her into a pretend match with the very matchmaker who caused it, her storytelling skills suddenly become essential.
Bellamy McKenna is a respected Irish matchmaker in 1800s St. Louis… and yet still single himself. Reluctantly agreeing to a temporary courtship, neither expects the sparks, secrets, or danger that follow—or that this match might finally be the one.
💚 I adored these two. They were likable, engaging, and truly wonderful together. 🍀 I’ve loved this entire series, especially since it’s set in my home state, and I really enjoyed learning more about the Irish immigrant experience—especially meaningful since my own ancestors are from Ireland. ✨ This is a clean, faith-friendly historical romance I highly recommend.
I’ve received a complimentary copy and was under no obligation to leave a positive review.
After a couple of great matches in the Shanahan Family, Bellamy knew he was close to becoming the official Matchmaker of the county. His father was ready to hand over the official records. But his father had one more request.
Zaira loved to write but had to keep it secret from her parents. Her friend, Bellamy, knew she wrote for the newspaper under the guise of being a man. Bellamy hid his artistic talent from his father. They also hid their feelings for each other.
A sweet final story of the Shanahan Match Series. I have really enjoyed the books. Each book was very entertaining. I loved the characters and I sure love Jody Hedlund's books.
Marrying the Matchmaker is a captivating conclusion to the wonderful A Shanahan Match series. The series offers an entertaining snapshot of Irish American community life in 19th century St. Louis unfolding through the lives and loves of the Shanahan and McKenna families. This story centers around the relationship between middle daughter Zaira Shanahan and matchmaker Bellamy McKenna. Their contrasting personalities (imaginative versus logical) clash in delightful ways, and both beautifully crafted characters are conflicted between family expectations and personal dreams. Tender moments mixed with humorous ones, wrapped in romantic tension, keep the well-paced story engaging and fresh. I totally enjoyed this story and the series and highly recommend them. I read an early copy of this book from the publisher through Interviews and Reviews via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
You have proved yourself to be a very efficient and understanding matchmaker. Watching you navigate your previous matches, and the trickiness behind those, everyone has applauded you. Even Oscar, even though you might not quite see it. Those couples are thriving and very much in love.
Speaking of love, I think it's time that you stop trying to tell yourself that there are no feelings being harbored by you for Zaira Shanahan. Every interaction between you two has been noticed by us readers, and those around you. You might be out of your depth with that one. Actually, you are. Completely out of your depth with her. Boy, you are smitten. Wholly and irrevocably. Stop trying to deny it. It is seen by everyone but yourself and Zaira. Shakespeare had it right when he penned the words, "The lady doth protest to much, methinks". Yes, that applies to you, and Zaira. You both are way in over your heads. When are you going to recognize that and move forward to being happy together and building a beautiful and messy life together? And stop the protest that is on your lips right now. There is too much evidence to support my claims.
You trying to avoid her when she enters a room. The increased eye contact. Your continual watching where she is at in proximity to you. Your protectiveness of her, yet brushing it off as brusque and telling her she needs to be more careful. Your hands flexing. Knowing her secret. Her knowing yours. From the first moment we saw you interact, we all knew. I'd dare say that your cheeks might turn a touch red and your hand might be flexing a touch.
Again, trust us. We know. We see all of the signs whether you do or not. When you finally allow yourself to trust her completely with your heart, she will do all she can to protect it. Just the same as you when you finally realize that you already own her heart. And in those moments of peril and danger, you two are a great team and care deeply for the safety of each other.
It's time. Enjoy your journey throughout this book as you woo and allow yourself to fall even more completely in love with Zaira, the other half of your heart.
Sincerely, All Readers Invested In You & Zaira
Content: Clean. Some kisses but nothing further. Some mild moments of peril but nothing graphic.
I received a physical copy from the author/publisher, Bethany House, as well as a digital copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I’ve loved this series from the beginning, and this final installment was a truly delightful and satisfying way to wrap everything up. Bellamy has been a favorite character of mine throughout the series, so seeing him finally get his love match felt especially rewarding.
The romance between Bellamy and Zaire is passionate and heated while keeping the door closed. Their chemistry is tangible and the tension between them was perfect. I adored these two!
I also really enjoyed the historical setting in St. Louis, which added to the dynamics. There are two orphaned children in the story who brought a lot of heart and emotion, and the inclusion of Irish customs was interesting and gave the book an extra layer of depth and charm.
One of my favorite aspects was how both main characters have interests their families wouldn’t approve of—interests they feel forced to keep secret. Watching them support and encourage each other in those pursuits made their relationship feel even sweeter.
Overall, this was a lovely, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying romance, and a wonderful conclusion to a series I’ve truly enjoyed. I’m sad to see it end.
I received a complementary copy but a positive review was not required.
You know how you get to know a whole cast of characters throughout a book series? And then you read the final book, and you see a quick glimpse of each MC, and then… it’s all over. And you say goodbye? (until you re-read, of course!) it’s that bittersweet feeling. They all got their happily ever after, and you’re left, alone, trying to figure out what to read next, if you can read anything, and if you’ll connect with the characters.
That’s how it feels, leaving the Shanahan siblings.
I’ve enjoyed walking through the trials, the adventures, the heartbreak, and the healing with the Shanahans.
Zaira and Bellamy finish off the series. The matchmaker finally finding his own match.
I loved the theme of honesty throughout this story. So often in fiction, with fake dating especially, we do often see lying, and the characters don’t always come clean, or admit they the lying was wrong. But both Zaira and Bellamy see the problem with hidden hobbies/activities and both desire to be honest and truthful — not only with each other, but with their families.
As usual the book contains swoony kisses, adventure, and a little intrigue. Faith, honesty, respect, and purity is also woven through the book.
Thank you, Jody, for another great series, and my ARC copy!
✨Spoiler-free Book Review✨ Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Thank you to Baker Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own! Releases 2/3/2026
I didn’t realize this was book four in a series when I received it, but I was still able to read and enjoy it without feeling lost. That said, I do think there are some mild spoilers for the earlier books, so if you’re planning to read the whole series, I’d recommend starting from the beginning. 😅
This story follows Bellamy and Zaira - two secret artists who happen to know each other’s closely guarded truths. When a scandal threatens their reputations, they enter into a fake courting arrangement to let things settle… even though their feelings are painfully obvious to everyone but themselves. 🤭
This was such a fun read! Bellamy’s honor, kindness, and deep care for others made him incredibly admirable, while Zaira completely stole my heart with her wit and boldness. She’s confident, driven, and not afraid to go after what she wants - a dynamic I enjoy in a heroine! 🙌
The chemistry was strong, but I especially appreciated the gentle faith thread woven throughout the story. Rather than heavy scripture quotes, the book focuses on lived-out faith: caring for the sick and orphaned, lessons on choosing honesty even when lying would be easier, and living in a way that glorifies God. ☺️✝️
The pacing was consistent and enjoyable. A few plot moments felt a little unexpected or random, but honestly - I was happy to go along for the ride. 😂
This wasn’t a life-changing romance for me, but it was genuinely fun and cute! I’d happily recommend it if you enjoy fake courting or obvious mutual pining. 😆
I also deeply appreciated the discussion around breaking generational cycles - the reminder that just because our families lived one way doesn’t mean we’re destined for the same outcome!!! ❤️
Overall, this was a joyful, trope-filled story that made for a really pleasant read! 😉
I may circle back to the first three books someday, once this one isn’t quite so fresh in my mind due to the spoilers 😆
‼️⚠️Content / Trigger Warnings⚠️‼️ – Gunshot wound – Robbery – Sick or dying parents (mentioned) – Orphans – Infertility – Alcohol – Drug addiction & alcoholism – Divorce – Brief mention of stillbirth & death during childbirth
What happens when the matchmaker meets his match? All the love for Marrying the Matchmaker! Bellamy’s story is finally here, & I adored watching this cheeky matchmaker fall in love. Reluctant to fall, a fake relationship, childhood friends-to-lovers, witty banter, delicious tension, sizzling kisses, & a cozy Irish community made this the perfect ending to the series.
Bellamy McKenna’s successful matches prove he’s nearly ready to take over his father’s matchmaking business—except his latest assignment is proving difficult. With a prominent senator’s daughter involved, the stakes couldn’t be higher. When Zaira Shanahan—the maddeningly attractive woman who knows far too many of his secrets—offers help in exchange for a favor, Bellamy reluctantly agrees. But when a hug turns into a kiss in his father’s pub, Bellamy becomes the unwitting subject of his own matchmaking.
Zaira has always had a thing for Bellamy, ever since he rescued her as a child, even if the frustrating man acts like he can’t stand her. She knows his secrets, & he knows one of hers—she secretly writes stories for the newspaper. Needing real romantic experience to bring more feeling to her work, Zaira strikes a deal: her insider knowledge in exchange for a hug… or a kiss. That first passionate kiss leads to a fake courtship meant to protect Zaira’s reputation & Bellamy’s future. Bellamy believes his family is cursed in love, & Zaira refuses to give up her writing & independence—but will they overcome their stubbornness to admit what everyone else already knows?
I loved this story so much! The banter, sizzling chemistry, & finally learning all of Bellamy’s secrets - sheer perfection. I adored Bellamy & Zaira’s love/hate dynamic & how both are afraid to reveal their true passions—painting & writing. Watching them build each other up & find the courage to share their talents was everything.
Zaira’s escapades lead them into dangerous situations. Loved seeing their walls come down when they become trapped in a bank. Bellamy’s final grand gesture had me smiling from ear to ear.
Highly recommend this swoon-worthy romance! I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.
Make sure you start with book one and do yourself a favor and read this entire series. Jody Hedlund has done it again with this series, you fall in love with the Shanahan family from the very beginning.
Once I read that this book would be about Bellamy’s match I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book.
Zaira Shanahan who is the middle Shanahan child and aspiring to become a writer, hides her identity on her stories. All her secret publishing is going to plan, but she’s gotten feedback that she needs more emotion in her story. But she doesn’t know where to start, because she’s never had any real life love experience.
Bellamy Mckenna, a friend and someone she has secretly admired for years, knows all about her secret writing strikes a deal with her. She will help him with a match he is desperate to make for a client, and to prove to his father and the community he is a good matchmaker and in return will help her with research for her story.
After a public kiss they share, both families are pushing to match them together, Bellamy and Zaira both agree to fake the match to make their families happy, and that it will only be a temporary thing. They are both fighting a real connection to each other, and refuse to admit it. Bellamy is scared to have a marriage that would fail, all the while he is falling head over heels for Zaira. On the other hand Zaira is sure of her love for Bellamy but becomes weary of his constant rejection.
The tension and chemistry throughout the book makes it so hard to put down.
They both have secrets and insecurities they want to hide, but will confiding in each other put an end to all their questions? Will they realize they are perfect for each other in every way?
I also loved some other historical topics going on behind the scenes in this book. The hardships of the cholera epidemic and orphaned children on the streets of St. Louis.
This was a great ending to a wonderful series. You can read this book alone, but will more greatly be enjoyed by reading the entire series.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from Jody Hedlund. The opinions in my review are entirely my own.
Warning: If you’re going to start Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund, make time—because you won’t want to put this book down. :)
Zaira Shanahan is an aspiring writer. She’s submitted a story and received feedback that she was close. So close, but the editor said she needed more realistic emotion. The kind she hasn’t yet experienced in her nineteen years.
That’s where Bellamy McKenna comes in. He’s helped her older sisters and brother find love through his matchmaking, but Zaira isn’t interested in being matched, at least not yet. Even if she finds Bellamy charming and handsome, all she really wants is his help to experience emotions she can write about. A kiss or maybe just a hug, something to help her bring more feeling to her stories. But first, she has to convince him to help her.
Bellamy is still trying to prove himself to his father and the community. He’s had two successful matches, but with his latest job, the father has given him one week to find a suitable match for his daughter. Zaira offers to help, but she wants something in return. The problem is that what she’s asking for isn’t exactly proper. But it might be just a little too tempting to turn down.
I have to be honest, I’ve been waiting for Bellamy’s story since the beginning. To be a truly great matchmaker, Bellamy had to find his own match even though he fears that, like the McKennas who came before him, he’s doomed to fail. And boy, did he ever in Zaira.
Both Bellamy and Zaira have dreams that the world tells them they can’t accomplish, but in each other, they find encouragement, support, and the kind of connection that allows them to grow into their best selves. Their respect for one another builds as the story goes on, and watching them fall in love was such a joy. I highly recommend this book!
While you can read this book as a stand-alone book, it is most rewarding to read it after the first three.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Jody Hedlund. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I am not well-informed about the customs and traditions of the Irish immigrants to St. Louis in the 1800s. Nor do I know much about the various nuances and beliefs of the Catholics. However, certain things are not that different between Catholics and Protestants. Truth be told, things have probably changed more in all branches of the Christian faith from 1849 to today than the differences between Protestants and Catholics back then. Zaira and Bellamy both consider themselves to be good Christians and attempt to live their lives according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Just like everyone else, they still had flaws and often got it wrong. I enjoyed all of the many interactions between them as they continued to declare their dislike for each other while fighting with great difficulty against a growing attraction that started when they were mere youngsters. Certain factors have transpired in the story that are causing both families to press Zaira and Bellamy to make a match. The thing that inspired me the most about this story is the way that Bellamy sought so tenaciously to protect the honor of Zaira, even when she was clearly in the wrong. I loved their desire and efforts to find better solutions for the homeless children roaming the streets due to the deaths of their parents in the cholera epidemic sweeping the city. Jody Hedlund writes with heart and emotions as if she had been right there. She shares some great lessons about love, marriage, forgiveness, and caring for others. If you pay close attention as you read, you will recognize some areas in which our nation has made some great strides forward since then. Although this may not be the intent of the author, you may also see some areas where we have lost some values that once held great importance, like virtue, honesty, and integrity. I enjoyed the conversations between Zaira and Bellamy about issues on which they needed to work to improve. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
This satisfying conclusion to Hedlund’s ‘A Shanahan Match’ series whisks readers back to St. Louis, Missouri’s Irish community in the summer of 1849, one of the toughest years for St. Louis, where one of Ireland’s oldest traditions becomes the greatest quest for the daughter of a prominent family and the matchmaker himself!
St. Louis’ Irish matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna, is no stranger to the business of love, but when it comes to sorting out his own perfect match, he’s hesitant! There’s something linked to his prowess in his magical ‘art’ that is keeping his heart guarded and secrets hidden. I loved getting to ‘know and understand’ Bellamy a little more. He’s much more than just an intuitive guy with a panache for matchmaking.
Zaira Shanahan is fully aware of her shortcomings. Like Bellamy, she has secrets she’s kept well hidden, secrets that, if discovered, might ruin her search for love. She’s holding out for a man who could love her for who she really is and firmly believes that he doesn’t exist purely in fiction. The Shanahan middle child, Zaira, is definitely the rebel of the family, and I loved that she knew what she wanted and went for it!
These two imperfect humans are the center of Jody Hedlund’s examination: “Is there really such a thing as a perfect match?”
I loved Zaira’s insight when she questioned if a perfect match had more to do with how well a couple displays humility, perseverance, and forgiveness. Perhaps the thing that will stick with me the longest after reading this book is that there’s freedom in telling the truth.
One of the characters claims that there’s no such thing as being unlucky in love, that love is what we make of it. What do you think?
“You want to know the secret of the best marriages I’ve ever witnessed?” ~ you’ll have to read to find out!
This series, one that I’d highly recommend, has been an absolutely fascinating journey and I’m honored to share the last of these 5-star reads.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
If you’re looking for a Christian author who writes historical romance then no need to look any further. Jody Hedlund has been a breath of fresh air, so much so, I’ve read through all her books in the last 8 months and I’m having a hard time going back to mainstreams authors. I couldn’t put her books down and as soon as I was done with one book I was looking for the next. She has a way of weaving beautiful stories together while keeping Christian values at the center by adding in bits of God and bible verses along the way.
Marrying the Matchmaker is the fourth and final book in the Shanahan Match series. Finally, the matchmaker in training will need to find a match of his own or at least try to pretend to fool everyone with a fake courtship but who will be fooled in the end? This story is about Bellamy and Zaire’s who have known each other since childhood. Never have they considered actually being together until they strike up a deal with each other. A win win for them both. A fake relationship/ courtship to give them time to pursue their other interests, writing and paining , while getting their families off their backs. From first kisses, secret meetings, family obligations and expectations, hidden occupations, and even an escapade with a bank robber -there’s no telling what trouble the two of them will get into together. Maybe possibly even love. Will they be able to follow the plan and break off the courtship before they are forced to marry and go their separate ways or will they find love with a person they never expected? The only way to know how their story ends is to read about them in Marrying the Matchmaker. Jody will not disappoint you in any of her sweet love stories wrapped in history. She has a way of drawing you in and making you feel like you’ve went back in time and are right there with them living out their story.
If you haven’t read this series or any of Jody’s other books, take a chance. You won’t regret it! I didn’t.
I can’t believe that this series has come to an end. This might be my favorite in the series. Marrying the Matchmaker is the fourth and final book in Jody Hedlund’s A Shanahan Match series. I loved the banter and chemistry between Zaira and Bellamy. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect since there was still so much we didn’t know about Zaira and Bellamy but they were a perfect fit. They got on each other’s nerves at times but they also wanted what was best for the other. I loved the progression of their relationship and reading about them falling for each other. They were attracted to each other, but as they spent time together they saw the other’s kind heart and values. Both Bellamy and Zaira had some growing to do. They had some secrets they were keeping, some that they were keeping together. They had to figure out if they were going to choose truth and if a relationship could truly work. I loved the growth that they showed throughout the book as they learned to come to terms with what they truly wanted for the future. The romance was perfect, they definitely had sparks. I liked the progression of the story and I didn't want to put it down. The side characters were sweet, it was cool to see more of Bellamy’s family. I loved how Zaira and Bellamy came together to help children. I am excited to see what Hedlund will write next. I would totally recommend this book! Marrying the Matchmaker is a closed door inspirational historical romance.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I am still smiling hours after I turned the last page with a contented sigh. Wonderful ending to a favorite series. I have enjoyed every single book in this series and am sad to see it come to an end. The fictional family of Shanahan's and their matchmaker Bellamy have provided many hours of entertainment.
In Hedlund's newest book Marrying the Matchmaker, the middle child of the Shanahan family, Zaira and Bellamy the matchmaker finally have their own story. The romance and chemistry was tangible, practically sizzling off the page,as Zaira and Bellamy found every reason why they would not be a good match. Friends since childhood, a couple of unfortunate if not fateful events place the two in the uncomfortable situation of a 'pretend' match to keep the society tongues from ruining Zaira's reputation.
I love the historical detail that Ms. Hedlund weaves through her stories. The orphaned children during the cholera epidemic in St. Louis unite Zaira and Bellamy, giving them a cause that reaches outside of their uncomfortable situation of a pretend match. The more time they spend together leaves them wondering if there is such a thing as a perfect match, and if so, have they found it.
Loved the pivotal ending. Definitely a favorite romantic scene. While this can be read as a standalone, readers will not regret reading the entire series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Quick Notes: *Book 4 in a Series *Fake Engagement *Hidden Identities *Artists *Hidden Feelings *Orphaned Children
My Thoughts: This was definitely my favorite book in the series! Zaira and Bellamy were both adventurous, scheming, and sassy characters- in a good way. They tried to deny their feelings, but it was obvious they were destined to be together. The passion in their kisses lit up the page. Zaira pretended to be the good daughter, but she secretly penned stories in the hopes of being a published author and wanted to experience adventure and romance in her own life. I adored her zest for life! Her fearlessness allowed her to follow her dreams and help poor children in need of a home, but her deception made it difficult for Bellamy to trust her. Bellamy has been a favorite character of mine from the beginning of this series, and I loved seeing him thrown off his game by Zaira. I enjoyed learning more about his past and why he loved painting, and it was heartwarming to see him heal his relationship with his father and overcome his belief in the Matchmaker Curse. The ending of this was really sweet. I loved the grand gesture from Bellamy, and I was so happy to see his sister Jenny get a happy ending thanks to one of the other storylines in this book. I highly recommend giving this series a try if you haven't already, and I'll be looking forward to more from Jody Hedlund!
Zaira and Bellamy have known each other since when they were children and neither has looked at the other as a potential spouse. Bellamy is struggling to prove his matchmaking skills and Zaira is needing some inspiration to help her writing. Zaira comes up with the perfect plan, she will let Bellamy know who should be selected for the match as she does know them, and in return he will help her with the inspiration she needs for her writing. However things never seem to go as planned and soon the town has heard about the scandal they've created. So once again Zaira comes up with another plan and once again Bellamy with some negotiation agrees and the two only find they are continuing to make things even worse for themselves as well as the reputation of their families. So when they are told it will be announced they are engaged to be married, their plans backfire quite quickly and yet these two always find themselves in predicaments that only pushes them closer. Each refusing the accept they do have feelings for the other, they each continue to deny to the other what they might actually be feeling or thinking about this all. But after one last scandalous incident, the two are forced to be open with each other and they each realize that maybe things really are meant to be and if they'd stop trying to resist and deny it, things would work out as God had intended. I did really enjoy this novel and characters! Thank you to Great Reads Book Promo for the tour invite and to the author and publisher for the complementary novel. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
Matchmaker Bellamy McKenna has been making matches for St. Louis’s Irish community, but is it now time for the tables to be turned on him? Zaira Shanahan is a writer who has been publishing under a pseudonym. When she is told she needs to show more realistic emotion in her romance stories, she turns to her friend Bellamy and makes a deal with him. If he helps her gain romantic experience—maybe just a hug or kiss--she’ll help him with a problematic match he’s trying to make. What could possibly go wrong? When they’re caught in a scandalous predicament, they decide to fake a match between them.
I enjoyed seeing these two interact together and get to know each other better. Zaira is plucky, sassy, and determined. Bellamy is kind of clueless on how to handle Zaira. I liked the author’s wit and humor and the fun dialogue between the two main characters. The growth the two showed in learning the importance of trust and honesty in their relationships with others added much depth and inspiration to the tale.
“Maybe a perfect match has to do with how well a couple displays humility and perseverance and the willingness to forgive.”
This story was entertaining and very enjoyable. It’s clean and wholesome with enough emotion and romantic tension to be realistic and keep the pages turning. 4.5 stars

#BookReview : MARRYING THE MATCHMAKER by Jody Hedlund
4.5 ⭐
“Aye, she was going to use Bellamy McKenna for research whether he wanted it or not. “
Marrying the Matchmaker follows a fake engagement between Zaira and Bellamy, two strong characters who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Both care deeply about helping others and are passionate about their work, Bellamy as a matchmaker and painter, and Zaira as a writer. Their different personalities cause them to clash, but their hidden feelings for each other make the story more interesting. Even though they act uninterested and often create tension, it’s clear they respect and admire one another. Their chemistry is enjoyable to read.
I also liked learning more about Bellamy’s love for painting and his past. The story shows how childhood experiences and beliefs can shape our choices as adults, and how early misunderstandings, like Bellamy’s view of his parents’ relationship, can come from not knowing the full truth. Overall, I enjoyed this historical fiction set in St. Louis during a cholera epidemic. It can be read as a standalone, but reading the earlier books adds more depth to the story.
Thank you Bethany House and netgalley for the complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Series: A Shanahan Match, Book 4 Pub date: Feb 03 2026
Has the matchmaker met his match? If you’ve read the series, Bellamy McKenna, is very familiar. He’s young, confident, handsome, and is making himself known as a matchmaker. If he can make a match for Senator Whitcomb’s daughter, he will have proven his worth. He also has a passion for painting, something that connects him to his past. Zaira Shanahan, is bold, determined and beautiful. She also has a passion for writing, secretly writing stories for the local paper. When she devices a plan to help Bellamy with his matchmaking, she will also be getting something in return. How can you not be intrigued by these two characters. They are both headstrong, passionate, and persistent when it comes to what they want. What they don’t want is a match between themselves, even though the chemistry is there. The storyline is what I loved the most. The matchmaking, the family dynamics and tension is perfection, but the depth of the cholera epidemic, the orphans with nowhere to go, and the economic uncertainty play such a pivotal part to the depth of the story. From historical points to the witty banter, this is a gripping and entertaining story. You do not need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this story, but I highly recommend reading them for pure enjoyment. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Bold and impetuous Zaira Shanahan finds herself in a difficult situation with the up-and-coming matchmaker Bellamy McKenna. Her laser focus of wanting first-hand experience for a romance scene that she is writing had me shaking my head and thinking, “This is going to get messy!”. Bellamy is a complex man; while he has an uncanny ability to find matches for people, he is reticent to further his attraction and relationship with Zaira. This is mostly due to his fears as he states, “The matchmakers have advice on relationships for everyone else, but they can never make the advice work for themselves.”

I was so happy to see Bellamy get his own HEA. He has been my favorite character throughout the series, and I have been eagerly awaiting his story. It was even better than had imagined with great character development and the message of truthfulness, and trust over fear.
Sadly, this is the fourth and final book in the series, A Shanahan Match Book. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Shanahans and the matches that Bellamy made for this tight knit family.

This is the fourth and final book in Jody Hedlund’s series A Shanahan Match. Set in St Louis immediately after the time of the third book (A Wager with the Matchmaker), the city is still overwhelmed with cholera and the results of a devastating fire that spread from the docks to the city, although things are improving with cleaning up the city and rebuilding. The middle Shanahan, daughter Zaira, finds herself in a fake relationship with Bellamy, training to become the next matchmaker. You don’t have to have read the books in order, but they do set the scene of the place, characters, and issues of the time.
I think this may be my favorite of the series. Zaira gets away with a lot, being the middle child who is often overlooked. She gets in the habit of lying to cover up her desire for adventure and also starting to write a column for a newspaper. She also lies about not being attracted to Bellamy. He lies about things in his life as well, and they both have to learn the value of honesty in all relationships. I really like Hedlund’s insights into what makes a successful marriage relationship.

Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund is a historical fiction novel that is a delight from start to finish.
Zaira Shanahan has a bit of a rebellious spirit that seems to get her into trouble frequently. Here, she ends up in a compromising position with the local (and widely desired by the ladies) matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna. And that was after they had kissed in public.
The two had agreed to help each other with their secrets. She needed Bellamy to kiss her so she would know how to show the proper emotion in her romance stories that she was writing for the local paper, and in return, she would help him with a difficult match he was trying to make. He was too captivated by Zaira to fulfill his promise to kiss her, so she made him do it openly, which prompted their father and her brother to set up a match.
They only agreed because they decided it would be a fake match, and they would end it after a certain point. But then...stuff happens, and it is so good, you will not be able to put this book down.
If you love hate-to-romance and forced marriage tropes, you will adore Marrying the Matchmaker. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley for my honest opinion.
I'm not ready for this series to end. I stayed up way too late devouring Marrying the Matchmaker- the final book in this series about the Shanahan siblings who make matches via the local matchmaker's son Bellamy McKenna.
Zaira is the middle Shanahan sibling who has tried to keep the peace by acquiescing to her parents' requests but secretly fulfills her passion for writing in the quiet hours of the night. She is not afraid of doing "research" for her writing by sneaking out at night or pursuing experiences she can later draw upon in her writing. However, her quest to experience lands her in a spot of trouble.
Bellamy McKenna is afraid of one thing- having a marriage that matches his parents and grandparents. The matchmakers themselves have been unlucky in love. Bellamy strives to ensure his marriage will be different, but has not quite figured out how to go about doing so.
Readers can feel the passion and desire Zaira and Bellamy feel towards each other. When others around them demand a match, one wonders when they will eventually see what is right in front of them.

This book y'all! Best by far hands down!! My favorite in this delightful series. I wish it wasn't the last one. I've loved these characters since the beginning. This book made me chuckle throughout the whole story with Bellamy and Zaira's banter and their antics. I simply couldn't put this book down. I finished it early this morning. This had the perfect ingredients to keep you interested all the way through. I learned much and made friends with Bellamy and Zaira. I found myself rooting for them too. I mean, they really did make me laugh. I knew she wanted to shake him at times and so did I . I wanted him to wake up and smell the roses to see what's in front of him. He kept me on the edge of my seat. I did love getting to know him though. Hedlund has done a wonderful job as always with this beautiful heartfelt story. I was in love the minute I opened this book. Or before I even opened it. I didn't want it to end and was sad when it did. 5 stars for a wonderful adventure through St. Louis that I thoroughly enjoyed! My thanks for the opportunity to read and review. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
3.5 stars "You'll be my fake fiance, Bellamy . . . . And I'll be yours."
The stage is set. Zaira Shanahan needs some first hand romantic experience in order to write more emotional depth into her newspaper columns and Bellamy McKenna is being pressured to include personal knowledge of a more amorous nature with his current clientele as he continues to build his distinction as a reputable matchmaker. Naturally, what happens next sends a ball rolling down a slippery slope of potential catastrophe, ensuring the consequences will be both entertaining to watch (or in this case, read) and embarrassing to imagine.
Realizing a little too late that their subterfuge has consequences, Bellamy and Zaira furiously try to backtrack their impulsive decision to deceive their families, when unfortunately they find themselves in a terribly compromising situation. "It's not too late to work at being honest."
Romantic tension oozes from every pore of this engaging story, proving that sometimes a picture is truly worth more than a thousand words.

If there’s one person that knows how to push Bellamy’s buttons it’s Zaira Shanahan. After all, she knows his secret. And if that weren’t bad enough, she’s the most attractive woman that Bellamy’s ever known and seems intent on driving him crazy. When the two are thrown together in a marriage of convenience, they each try to keep their feelings in check - but things quickly get out of hand. Can they humble themselves and come clean about the web of lies they’ve been spinning, or will the lies end everything they’ve been working for?
Well done to author Jody Hedlund for the coming release of this fourth book in the Shanahan Match series, Marrying the Matchmaker. Many have waited with eager anticipation for the matchmaker’s own story, and I can attest that the wait has been worth it!
If you’ve enjoyed the first three books in the Shanahan Match series, don’t miss out on Bellamy and Zaira’s story. You’ll no sooner have it in your hands than you’ll realize you’ve read the whole thing from cover to cover.
