Wanita May grew up in the fruit belt of Ontario - St.Catharines. Crazy-happy childhood, she always has had a vivid imagination and loads of energy.
The youngest of six -- four older brothers, and a sister -- taught her at a young age to be competitive in all aspects of life.
At sixteen, she began competing in athletics (track and field) and before she turned seventeen, she was representing Canada in high jump. She continued to compete, breaking Canada's JR High Jump record (1.92m - 6' 3 1/2" for those metric-ly challenged). She attented University of Toronto, and Kansas State University - winning CIAU's and becoming All-American 6x - NCAA Indoors Runner Up + more.
But you're not interested in her athletic career - unless of course you're curious to know she stands 1.70m (5'7") and has jumped 20cm over her head on more than one occassion. She's represented Canada at the World Championships, World Jrs., won Francophone Games, and loved every minute of every competition. From the grueling workouts, the crazy weights she lifted on her back, the days she thought her lungs were going to spit out of her mouth for lack of oxygen, the travelling around the world and the opportunity to read - her favourite past time.
Life continued with her husband (a distance runner from Liverpool, UK, who she met at KSU) and then their first, then second and finally third child. Their house became full of more imagination and stories.
Wanita and her husband run an online business, dealing in antiques and collectables - particularly jewelry and porcelain (one of the business' website: www.wadeincanada.com ).
After her father passed away in 2009, from a six-year battle with cancer (which she still believes he won the fight against), she began to write again. A passion she'd loved for years, but realized life was too short to keep putting it off.
Her first book, Rae of Hope - from the Chronicles of Kerrigan - will be available October 2011 by kNight Romance Publishing.
She is currently represented by Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency. Wanita is a writer of Young Adult, Fantasy Fiction and where ever else her little muses take her.
I downloaded this anthology mostly because it was free on the kindle store
I feel like giving it 3 stars is too generous...
What to say besides that this anthology is a collection of cliffhangers? And not in a good way, oh no. 3 stories among this anthology just stop abruptly in the middle of the plot, which leaves you confused... And mad. Also, girls, whenever you see a guy who's super sexy and well muscled, you know he is the one for you. -_-
I know I am not a big romance fan, and I can be picky, but seriously, this was too much. I am not going to generalise because I couldn't finish one story and I really enjoyed another one, but besides these two the rest was... *shudders*
You want to read this anthology? Fine. Just don't expect too much out of it.
Forest of the Forbidden: A Paranormal Fantasy Anthology box set has the following titles Venom by Kristen Middleton, Seventh Mark Part 1 by W.J. May, The Shadow Soul by Kaitlyn Davis, Crush by Chrissy Peebles, Element by CM Doporto, and Awakening by Samantha Long. I’ll update my review as I finish each title.
Venom by Kristen Middleton
Venom is the first book in the Venom series and this was just a great way to start off a new series. I really enjoyed this book. It is book one in a trilogy and even though I don't like that it ended with a cliffhanger it totally left me wanting to read more. It was a really easy read that had me into it from the very beginning and that's hard to do in such a short amount of time.
My interest was pigued at the very beginning of the book. Little did I know, but I was in for a suspenseful journey. The history was very insightful and colorful. The characters were not you everyday heroes. The tale was unbelievable and colorful, with unexpected villains and innocent children being victimized. The perception, between the main characters, was priceless. I would recommend this book to serious readers of mystery and mayhem.
I could only give this anthology three stars because I found myself "flipping" pages to finish. Like the introduction states these stories are all cliffhangers. I'm not sure I want to finish the individual series. The writing and editing is very good but not my style of books. The reviews sounded better than the stories really are
Excellent selection of novels with just enough of a storyline to make you want to buy each book. I have to the novels in my library & now want to read them again. Well done ..
Let me start by saying this is co platelet not my normal genre to read!!! But….whoa!!! I was sucked in immediately!! I couldn’t put it down. I really loved the characters and the story!!
I like what I’ve read so far but I don’t like how each book ended in-completed. So now do I need to buy each book separately, and chance wasting my money? Not a good choice to get these.
So, firstly, I'll admit I got this book as a free e-book for my reader (because so much of my reading material is in storage right now T_T). That being said, I had a feeling it was going to be bad.
Unfortunately, I was right.
It's one of those anthology collections (read: a bunch of half-assed, unfinished stories that are supposed to encourage you to go out and BUY the next one in whatever series they're attempting to write). The focus is, of course, Paranormal. Romance, specifically.
One of the ways I mark a decent book is how well it holds my interest - and in all fairness, a lot of the time, it doesn't take a lot - and let me tell you, these didn't. They were discorded drivel, pieced together with the hopes that if you throw in a werewolf or a vampire or a gargoyle (insert preferred supernatural creature here) then it's all good and you don't really need much of a story. Or the story you have doesn't have to be intelligible.
It's annoying, because they can get away with it and people will still read it.
But that's not what really bugged me about it. (Okay, it was part of it. It was a collection from DIFFERENT writers and the only thing they really had in common was how poorly developed their stories were.) What actually bugged me the most was that at one point, I could see the fanfiction in it. Literally.
I believe it was Seventh Mark by W.J. May that had me just beating my head against the wall. Why you ask? Because it was Twilight Fanfiction. I could tell you which characters were which, where she changed the story, and how it went originally.
And the thing is, I'm not against fanfiction. In fact, I think it's an excellent tool to hone your skills - but you shouldn't be publishing anything that belongs in fanfiction as a legitimate, original novel. Why? Because it's NOT. And it's a trend that's really starting to bother me. I don't care if a book was the inspiration for your novel, so long as you changed it enough that it's an original novel now. That's fine. But these? They don't qualify, not when I can go through and pick out the characters and tell you who they are. There's a problem with that.
Unfortunately, the REAL problem with that is, W.J. May was probably one of the better writers in this anthology. For the first half of her story, it was more interesting than a lot of the others and had just a little more cohesiveness to the story. Maybe, in fact, because it was fanfiction, I don't know. But I do know that I didn't care for much of the writing in this collection, I'll probably try more of W.J. May to see if she writes ORIGINAL fiction that's any good, and I won't go out of my way to find the 'sequels' to any of these short novellas.
1. Venom by Kristen Middleton ***3 Stars (PR) Chelsey goes to the new nightclub in town to try and find out what happened to her cousin Melody. She does find her cousin but she also finds a bunch of vampires and werewolves. This was a short novella, I had a good amount of issues with this authors use of stereotypes without giving the characters any original voice. I think I gave it 3 stars because in comparison I enjoyed it a lot more that the last few I read from her.
2. Seventh Mark (Part 1) by W.J. May ***3 Stars So this wasn't great, Rouge befriends Grace and Michael and it quickly becomes blatantly clear that strange things are going on. You get little tidbits but no real information. This was a quick read and didn't really have a cliff hanger so much as this is literally the first part of the story. I think I may continue this series.
3. The Sahdow Soul (Dance of Dragons #1) by Kaitlyn Davis Not Interested This just wasn't my particular cup of tea.
4. Crush (Crush Saga #1) by Chrissy Peebles *1 Star Taylor moves to California and runs into the supernatural. Like literally, everywhere. Unbelievable situations, unreasonable reactions...This just didn't have a good story, or good characters, or good dialogue.
5. Element by CM Doporto *1 DNF Star Honestly, the main character was just a pretentious bitch who looked down on and judged the people around her. Not really someone I care to read about.
6. Awakening by Samantha Long *1 DNF Star "Can you believe this? Demons? Lucifer?" This, coming from the shapeshifter who hangs out with a girl who can see the future, a girl who can heal with her hands, a girl who can turn invisible, a guy who can move things with his mind and a guy who can control fire. No, that's where he draws the line on weirdness.
I used to love these collections, I really did and I still can't stop myself downloading them every time I see one free but whereas in the past I'd start reading what I expected to be a stand alone to more often than not discover it's a cliffhanger I now check before I start and yet again this is the usual collection of books that with one exception are free individually anyway. Authors have to make money I appreciate this and I've said before I have no problem with cliffhangers, first in series, only first chapter given or whatever they release I just like to be told, have they any idea how frustrating to discover the book you're reading just ends and it's invariably going to cost quite a lot to continue, I suppose they do that's the point. All the books in this collection are cliffhangers.
Crush (The Crush Saga, #1) by Chrissy Peebles- 2 stars When Taylor sparks moves with her family to California her meeting with the locals doesn't go as expected. Her new crush Jesse is hiding something from her.
Really? One stupid mistake after another for the characters. The characters don't have much of an attention span, they jump from one thing to another. Taylor just acts dumb and has no common sense whatsoever. The characters were flat, there was no substance to them at all. I thought the writing was sloppy and the story did not have as much action as I thought it would.
I am so glad that I purchased this boxed set. Usually when I get these sets on my kindle you get maybe three good stories and four or five that are passable fillers, and sometimes one that is really lame. NOT this time. I have to say that I am so pleasantly surprised to find that there are no fillers in this collection. As the collection went on I grew more pleased as not only did the quality improve but all of the ideas were original and no two stories were too similar. In fact, the only issue I have with this collection, is that I now have plenty of second books to purchase!
This book was made up of 6 different stories by 6 different authors. They are all the first installments of they're own series. I LOVED a few of them not to say I disliked the others. But Chrissy Peebles, W.J.May and Kristen Middleton are by far 3 of my FAVs in the paranormal romance genera. All six books are for sure worth checking out for anyone who enjoys the kind of books that make you shake your head to stay awake in order to read on a little bit more.. I WILL for sure be reading the second installments of all these books!
A mixed collection of so-so stories (some of which seem to have been bundled into far too many anthologies and then given away for free on GooglePlay). With a couple of these, I really would have liked to have been given the whole story to make an assessment on, but half story cliffhangers are just frustrating and only serve to alienate me, which in turn can put me off an author. Some of these stories probably (on their own and complete) could rate more than two stars but I will never know.
Everyone of these books is great. Each author writes so wonderfully that you can't help but want to continue reading. Each story is so well put together that it makes you want to read the next book in each series.
I just finished these six books and I am in awe. Each book kept me enthralled and in anticipation of what was going to happen next. Definitely going to get the next book in each series just to see what happens next.
