Book Five in the A Wizard's Touch series
Death is a minor inconvenience in the path to true love.
When the God of the Underworld sends Alstair back to the Academy to help pick out a new headmaster, he doesn’t mention he put Alstair in for the job. Angered but willing to keep his word, Alstair discovers the headmaster position comes with more knots of deception than a sailor’s rope.
Porter Exton had a crush on Alstair. He’d watched Alstair train Elijah through the window and had spent more than one night dreaming of the Reaper. However, dreams were set aside in order to discover the truth about his death and if the man who killed him is responsible for the other deaths at the school.
Two men with different backgrounds need to discover what they have in common if they hope to save themselves from plotting gods, egomaniacs and possible killers.
Amber Kell
Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.
When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.
During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.
Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.
She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres.

This fifth volume in the ‘A Wizard’s Touch’ series takes up the story of two extremely fascinating characters from the previous book: Porter, the ghost of a murdered student, and Alstair, a Reaper and Hades’s right-hand man. As such, both this review and the book itself contain spoilers for previous installments; if you want to get the full effect of the well-orchestrated mystery and gradual reveal of all the Wizard Academy’s secrets, don’t read this series (or my reviews) out of order.
Alstair is a very secretive man/wizard/Reaper, so I was looking forward to finding out more. Early on, my hopes for him to provide ample entertainment were summed up by his thoughts: “Alstair didn’t want to spend another century processing incoming souls. The thought of the paperwork alone made him want to die all over again.” The thought of paperwork in the Underwold certainly made me grin, but it’s little details like this that make this series so amusing. Alstair struggling with his assignment, his reluctance to become the new headmaster, and his newly discovered desire for Porter to become his lover, maybe more, made him a great main character and far more “human” than I had personally expected from a Reaper.
Porter has his own issues to deal with. He wants revenge for his death (which was supposedly an accident), he sort of wants a chance to be the wizard he was never able to become, and he definitely wants to explore the physical side of his attraction to Alstair now that they both have bodies that enables them to be physical with each other. He has his hands full once the full extent of Hades’s plan, the villain’s evil intentions, and Porter’s own need for clarity become clear. Porter discovering his own magic (and boy, what a cool type of powers he has!) is just the icing on the cake, so to speak.
If you like stories about wizards who really have no idea what they can do with their magic, if you enjoy reading about men who need to figure out exactly what kind of relationship they want and are ready for, and if you're looking for an entertaining read with lots of magical coolness and some very hot wizard-on-wizard action, then you will probably like this novella.

3.5 ⭐️ Good addition to the series I liked seeing Alstair again. And Porter was still a great character, it was good to see him get to question his death and I also enjoyed Alstair getting another chance
I liked this but I had a couple of issues. First, I really would have liked a little more time spent on their different powers. They both seem to be fairly unique but we don't get really see much of that. Second, the timeline. Alstair is supposed to be the first reaper. But comments made in the story seem to indicate that he hasn't really been dead all that long. I guess I thought if he was the first then he would be thousands of years old. But it didn't read that way. Also the timing of when Porter was born, when he was at school, his death, how many years since. I was very confused over how everything fit together, as it didn't actually seem to fit together. Maybe I just missed something somewhere. *shrug*
OK, this was an enjoyable read, but it sure was short on details...
I knew Porter was going to make the story interesting, but I felt like we just didn't get our questions answered. Ghost powers? What are they? Does he still have them? Were these questions answered and I just missed it somehow? *headdesk*
Anyways... moving on to Temple's Touch... (Who the heck are Madison and Temple?)
What a nice story. The romance makes as much sense as you can expect from an insta-love kind of thing; the protagonists are engaging and don’t get stuck on unimportant things.
I had fun. All in all this volume turned out to be exactly what I was hoping for. <3 Only the ending could have been a wee bit longer.
There were many mysteries within this story and it was fun reading about them as they unfolded. The two main characters were fascinating and had different powers of their own. The writing was well done and the ending was sweet. Delightful read.
My Rating: 3.5 of 4 Stars (Based on Short&Light Read Category)
If there is one thing that makes me keep clicking on an Amber Kell book, after the read, I always end up smiling and relaxed.
Book 5 of a series by this author is no problem, every book usually are standalone, even if the stories do tend to overlap each other. The characters from the previous installments are always there be they mentioned or take part of the particular plot. However, I have noticed that even if I come in at odd series installments, somehow I am never lost.
In this particular story, we have that ghost, Porter, from Elijah's Ghost (A Wizard's Touch, #4) who is now living in Hades and whose powers are reemerging. We also have that gorgeous Reaper, Alstair, have his comeuppance, so to speak. Alstair is conned by Hades to go to a supposed convention where he is supposed to be the representative of his master when he realizes he is now the new headmaster. Accompanying him, as assistant, is Porter.
And so the fun begins when Reaper realizes that Porter had been keeping his own secrets and had wanted to join this new adventure to find and avenge his murder. A murder that had been swept aside by the school officials to cover the tracks of the murderous son of a huge benefactor. In the meanwhile, they have to also discover who the murderer is. The murderer of more students within this school Alstair is now headmaster of. To complicate matters, Porter is someone he does not wish harmed or even leave his sight. And these feelings come from a man, errr, Reaper, who swore never to get into a serious relationship.
This was a fun read. So okay, I know, there are some timeline issues, there are some inconsistencies and all that, but the beauty of this read is that it is short and so light it was enjoyable and just plain relaxing. I have no hesitation to recommend this read to all who want to just leave be the serious life and just dive into a world of mystery and paranormal.

Summary:
It was interesting to step back into this series as Porters story began after he finally went to rest after being a ghost for so long. It was fascinating how the nether world and Hades was portrayed differently than it is in many stories. Instead of being portrayed as an evil villain, he appeared more like the executive of a large corporation who will manipulate his workers, but it was usually for their own good, or his pleasure. Porter was determined to get revenge over his killer and being assigned to help Alstair,a reaper, was just icing for him. Alstair long ago gave up on anything except one night stands, that was until he met Porter and that all changed. Hades sent them to assist the college in choosing a new headmaster, but even that was not entirely true. The game was afoot pitting Alstair and Porter together, but what exactly was at stake was unclear. This fast paced story never let up form the very beginning wondering who done it until the very end. The many plot twist and paranormal aspects added depth and mystery to the story.
Porter Exton and Alstair Gorman are assigned to work together on a mission ordered by Hades. Also, Porter and Alstair discover an attraction for each other that cultivates into a long term relationship.
Porter's Reaper is fifth book in the A Wizard's Touch series. In this installment, the plot has an almost religious overtone. Revenge, along with mysterious deaths at the Mayell Wizard Academy, is the main elements illustrated.
As a Reaper, Alstair’s responsibility is not to judge the dead, but simply provide safe passage of newly deceased souls from Earth to the afterlife. However, Alstair is a considerate man who has other magical powers. Before his death, Alstair had goals of using his magic to benefit mankind.
Porter is a shy restless soul searching for answers regarding his death. He cannot move on to the afterlife until his murder is resolved. When Porter is assigned to be Alstair’s assistant, it gives him the opportunity to finally discover the answers he seeks.
Porter's Reaper is an intriguing saga. The storyline is a good balance of mystery, humor, conflicts and romance. I especially enjoyed the exhibition of their supernatural powers.
Porters Reaper was a great continuation of the Wizard's Touch Series. After we discover that Porter is a ghost and meet Alstair in Zheng's Heart and find out that the triplets Dean, Devin and Dan would find their mates and stay together because that is how they were strongest, it was not a wonder that this book would focus on Alstair, a reaper and Porter. Porter's main goal is to avenge his death, while Alstair was tricked into competing for the position of headmaster. There were a large number of twist and turns in this story and they made this a complicated, yet enjoyable book.
I liked the series overall, but this last one was kind of disappointing. I liked Porter and Alstair a lot, but he ending was rushed. The others ended on a not-so-complete note, but this one left a lot of stuff feeling unresolved and relatively bland. Yay for Dean, yay for Porter, but what about Porter's avatar, the new headmaster, Rivers, the rest of Porters magic and powers, resolution between Porter and Elijah, sacrifice vs. just being killed at school, etc.?
2.5 rounded to 3, disappointed but liked at the same time.
2 stars - Now this was unsatisfying... the story held so much promise but somehow it was over before it really begun. Porter's powers were never explored, the climax and ending were abrupt and way too simple, suddenly Alstair has resolved his commitment issues and the immortal Alstair gets hurt and has only two choices even though he can heal just fine?! it just didn't make sense. I really enjoyed it but suddenly it was over and I felt cheated.
After rereading it I'm thinking 2.8 stars. Still the same issues, I just knew what to expect.
Another great book from Amber Kell in this series I have loved this series from the beginning I can't wait to read more from it ....I hope it's soon ...
I just loved this story. I loved how Alstair and Porter started having feelings for each other and Hades put these two together to be partners for each other. I can not wait to see who shows up in the next book in this series. Erin
Amber Kell really knocked it out of the park with this one. Each book has made the world of A Wizard's Touch more and more vivid to me. Porter's Reaper is the best of the series so far, so you definitely need to check it out for yourself.
I am seeing a trend here. Meaty story... then abrupt ending with no closure. Like who became the headmaster? What happens with Porter's murderer after he portals out? Still no closure from the vague endings of the other books either.
The overall story is good, but could have used a bit more work on explaining Porter's powers and how they work. Also, the ending just felt a little too rushed to be believable.
I am glad to know what happens to porter. He was a character I liked in the last book. Again I give the book four stars for being that expensive and that short.
