Brilliant although the ending was weaker than I would like. I still remember reading the book the first time and thinking that the author must have had a number of great ideas in his head and wanted to put them into a story. I love the little descriptions he gives of some of the characters and events such as the desert chef, the police trying to book him for speeding and the crash scene. I also liked the attempt to look at the world through a different "lens" but this was one section that did not quite work, but a good effort all the same. Possibly the author has done what many others should have. A great first book, get it out of the system and stop while well in front. It would be hard to follow up.

What a delightful story - a real gem! I happened upon this book with no real inkling of what it was about but it looked like it might be a fun read, and it was. It actually made me laugh out loud, which doesn't often happen. The author obviously had experiences of academic life. I did find the ending a little disappointing and confusing though - it put a dampener on the whole story. What a shame the author doesn't appear to have written anything else.

Delightful, left of centre, funny book that lets you into the mind of Daniel O'Hooligan as he loses it. The blurb states that the "novel rockets along at full throttle, steering a wild course" and that sums it up perfectly. If you have ever been on a motorbike, on a twisty road, you know what it's like to be thrown from one side to the other and back again as you go through the bends. Likewise, Wear's novel throws you from one thing to another and back again, barely giving you time to gather breath before being tossed in yet another direction. And it works. Through it all there is a twisted logic you can follow. You can see what O'Hooligan sees and it all makes so much sense.
I can just about guarantee if you read this you will laugh out loud, you will despair and you will delight in the characters and their lives. The Madding of Daniel O'Hooligan is a amazing gem. It's almost impossible to find it in hard copy, but the author has just re-released it in Kindle format. (http://www.amazon.com/The-madding-Dan...) Well worth the $4.90.
