The kurata clan massacre will always remain one of the worst massacres you ever read about :(

As a child, Kurapika wanted nothing more than to explore the outside world and find a doctor for his ailing friend Pairo, so he agrees to partake in the tests of his Elder - but will the cost of revealing his unique clan gift be too high a price to pay for freedom? Togashi delivers an emotional companion to the "Phantom Rouge" film with this informative entry that will please all fans with its wit, charm and deep look into the past. Kurapika will do anything to pass these tests, though the consequences could very well change the fate of his clan forever...

"When you return, Kurapika, I'll have just one question. 'Was it fun?' I'll ask that, so... You have to have such a journey that you can answer 'yes' from the bottom of your heart."

Ok from the beginning I've always been a vocal "kurapika isn't a compelling character" person, I've always been a "kurapika is just less edgy sasuke" mf BUT a few things: HxH actually started before Naruto did and also ok this volume was a tear jerker. The clan's spot in the forest actually reminded me of the few sanctuaries in Berserk like the fairy island or Flora's house. The backstory and Kurapika's friendship with Pairo is rly sweet and then ofc we have to hear about the massacre. The fact that the woman who they saved was the one who ratted out the clan was also a perfect detail. Ugh a tear jerker that does make me like Kurapika more.

This one shot made me read the Hunter manga from the first chapter. It made me love Kurapika and I know why he has a lot of information. The drawing was very cool.

I read this mostly because the new chapter of the manga (to be officially released on 11/20/22) looks like it will have Sheila again, and I guess this prequel is technically "canon" even if it was intended to promote a movie of dubious canonicity. I haven't seen the film (or Madhouse's anime adaptation in general...), so I'm not exactly sure what's being set up; these chapters make it seem like the kid Pairo would somehow become a villain(?) but a quick glance at a plot summary said something about a former Phantom Troupe member. This prequel kinda-sorta sets up the Kurta massacre, but only insofar as it shows how Kurapika gained his village's blessing to go on his own adventures, during which time his clan were murdered. The last page is just text about the massacre, from which it could be inferred Sheila led the Spiders to the Kurta village, intentionally mispresented as Sheila having discovered the carnage. It also says something like "all 128 members of the clan were murdered," perhaps meaning someone was killed in Kurapika's stead(?).

I feel like the "moral" of this story is we should just fuckin' kill everyone over a certain age. The Kurta elders are "bad" because they assume outsiders want to kill them. The geriatric outsiders are "bad" because they believe the stories of the Kurtas being agents of the devil. The old lady who speaks ill of Kurapika after she sees his scarlet eyes takes action by throwing a pebble at his head, but her daughter - who seems to believe her mother's old tales - is simply afraid of the Kurtas' wrath, which is arguably "better" than trying to actively incite race-war against the Kurtas....

There are memes that Sheila in this story would grow to "transition" into Pariston of the Zodiacs, which could be somewhat interesting if true.
