I most often compare my work to Twilight meets 50 Shades (my vampires in Cora's Choice are more dark and angsty, and the S/M elements grow more and more pronounced as the series progresses), but the names that readers most often mention are Anne Rice and Sherrilyn Kenyon.
In Cora's Choice, Cora's Bond, and the following series, I wanted to show a heroine's journey from ordinary girl to someone super tough. This is a journey of months--years, even. So many stories start with an Anita Blake-type, able to kick ass and take names from the first we meet her. I thought it would be awesome and really interesting to show someone becoming that person through tiny changes that build on each other.

This is the second time I try such short novellas and it's not my thing.
You barely get into the story, there is no depth to the characters and the moment you think something is finally happening, the book just ends, after some 50 pages. It's ridiculous in my opinion.
Harper also seems to be too good to be true. She can do things, experienced stuntmen can't, is ridiculously attrative and still humps the guy who stole her car and didn't even have a scratch from a gunshot. Unbelievable and unlikeable.
I don't think I'll continue with this series, it's not my cup of tea.

Color me intrigued
My only complaint, I wish it was longer, but then again I'm not really a fan of serials to begin with. I much prefer getting a longer book all at once. For what it was, though, this book story was great. We are left anxious to see what happens next, making us want to rush to Amazon to buy the next installment. Harper is a bad ass that I think could easily handle being part of the werewolf world. This would definitely be a great read for your lunch break as it took right around an hour to read.

VM Black has converted me when it comes to serials. I found book one of this series months ago for free and put the series on my to get list when I got Christmas Gift cards. Well I received a copy of her series Cora's Bond and if you had told me the same writer wrote these two worlds I would have said no, but yes! The contrast in world's and characters is amazing and will not dissapoint!
This series is about Levi (werewolf) and Harper (human). It starts off with Levi on the run from having stolen something from an evil vampire. He car jacks Harper, only to find that woman is hard to get one over on and even harder to make upset/girly scream, even when she just had mind blowing sex on the hood of her carjacked car with the car jacker, who then turns into a wolf, and fights bad guys with a grenade launcher. She never misses a beat and it just gets faster paced and builds a world that is believable and characters that while enjoyable are not cliche. I will not tell you where you go to get supplies to fight an evil vampire, but it was one of the most awesome scenes as I could so picture it!
This book also has Chay ( I have a team Chay t shirt) who is a secondary character, but got his own book in the Taken by the Panther serial. VM Black has become one of my authors that I have on favorites and email updates so I know when a new book comes out, which is always quickly...never have to wait long! Give yourself a present and buy the escape that is VM Black's books.

this is not what I would consider to be a book. it is more like chapter 1 out of longer book. it gives you just enough to get you interested and then it abruptly ends.
as for the plot? totally ridiculous. the sex was cheesy, predictable, and random.
why do people write one chapter and call it a novella and force you to buy several other books to tell one story? it annoys me.

A book divided in 5 parts there not constitute five 'novellas'. Better just said is a first part of 30 pages.

I absolutely loved this short story!!!! I enjoyed the plot, setting, and main characters. This short story leaves out a lot of information out, but I hope these details are answered in the future.

I’m starting with the must knows first :) This is a serial, and for those who don’t understand what that is: it is like a tv show with several episodes and this one has 7 episodes. You must read them in order to understand, and you probably will scream when or where it ends :) Good news :) All episodes are out and no waiting is required :) Some authors do serials really well and V.M. Black is one of them. I say this because even though it is a whole book by itself, I think it is an art to pick just the right place to end where it does feel like you made the reader walk into a wall to stop the story. She ends at a good place where you have a little closure, but you definitely know there is more and want to read it :) This of course is for adults only because it has some very steamy scenes.

For the first part of a five part serial story, this is pretty good. Mechanically, it does what every serial story should do. It sets up the story, gets some action going, provides a good amount of drama, then leaves you sitting on a cliffhanger until the next section comes out in print. If you are a reader of patience, then serials are a wonderful thing.
Both of the mains characters, Levi and Harper, are really well-rounded individuals. The part I love the most is that Harper's description is not the typical romance story girl that is described. She has a nose ring, tattoos, etc. Definitely a bad girl who has a bit of a past. Just the one description of the new tattoo over an old tattoo to cover the name of a boy who dumped her pretty much puts her into her full character. And Levi, well, Levi is the basic hunkish werewolf that is usually described in supernatural romance stories, because, well, aren't all creatures that lope through the wild supposed to be large, muscular, and totally drool-worthy?
The only thing about this story as it stands with this one part is that I don't understand the chosen title. Nowhere is it said that Levi is the pack alpha, and honestly, if he is, his pack is screwed. And Harper seems to be volunteering to go along with everything, so she is hardly a captive.

Since this is a serial and I more or less read all the books in one sitting, I'm reviewing these books as one. All the books follow wolf shifter Levi and Harper, his voluntary hostage. Levi never really kidnapped Harper, she kidnaps herself. He steals her car and seeing as much as she loves the car, she jumps into the car while Levi is driving away.
The characters have good chemistry and hit it off from the very first page. Both Harper and Levi are a little dense as none of them ever consider their phones having GPS that can be tracked. It's something I saw from the very beginning, and it annoyed me that it never dawned on them even though the bad guys kept finding them time and time again. Seriously, how stupid can these characters get? I kept shaking my Kindle in hopes to shake some sense into these characters. True fax.
Levi and Harper kept putting themselves in these crazy situations that made me want to smack them upside their heads. There is a lot of drama and even more action in this story. At times it gets to be a little too much. It's that “too much” that pushes the books into annoying at times. An engaging story, though I'm not completely happy with how the story ended. I am giving an honest review of this novella by author V.M. Black. This is novella 1 of the series by the author.
Harper Bailey is seriously pissed that her baby, a Buick Skylark, was taken from her by a very sexy man by the name of Levi. When she goes chasing after him little does she know how much trouble she will be in. Levi is just trying to get to his friends so they can help him bring down a corrupt vampire. Harper coming along for the ride was just an added bonus for him.
For a novella this is really got a lot going for it with the story line and the 2 great main characters Harper and Levi. The story line has drama and action and it teases you to where you will want more of the series.
This is a great start to the series and because of sexual content this is for mature paranormal romance readers.

This looks like it will be a pretty good serial. The story starts off with action, and never really stops. Levi is a bad boy werewolf with a vampire mafia on his tail (pun intended). Harper gets pulled into the chase. Things get hot and heavy pretty fast. Harper is too involved to run away, so she takes her chances with Levi. I'm excited to see what Black will give us in the next book. It promises to be full of action, if it's anything like book one. This series has a bite...that's a good thing.

Who's the captive, certainly it's not Harper, I think she and Levi are both captives of one another.
This a short that I totally enjoyed and I don't like short stories. It is so full of action, humor and hot steamy passion. I am hooked on the series and you will be too I guarantee it.....
I loved that Harper has so much spunk and is not afraid to speak her mind around a very hunky werewolf.
This is the first and I just finished the second and I am so hooked that I can't wait for the third!
Luckily, VM writes them on a weekly basis cause if she didn't I would go mad!

Oh, I like Harper. She has curves, and doesn't fit into anyone's mold, but she has a fiery personality. She can hotwire a car, and has a handle on guns and knives, and she isn't afraid of going after whatever she wants. Levi is a bad boy, but not a bad guy, a distinction Harper has for her taste in men. Levi has gotten himself into a bit of trouble, but his problems get more complicated when he tried to steal Harper's car. I love the no holds barred sexual tension between them, and the banter. I would read more from this author.

Werewolves, Vampires, A secrets item that could make or break life as they know it now. And one hot curvaceous woman who gets under his skin. Looking forward to the next book in the series to find out what happens next.

V.M. Black gives her readers what they want and so much more. The Alpha's Captive series is captivating, intriguing, and well-written. The characters, the storyline and discovering all the dirty secrets suck you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. There are so many unknowns to these stories that just when you think you know what is going on, Ms. Black adds another twist to throw you off. Harper and Levi have a chemistry that leaps off the page. You can feel the sexual tension between them and you can't wait to see if anything more will come of it.

The only thing that sort of makes her day is that the thief is smoking hot. Levi is a magnet for trouble. He doesn't mean for it to happen it just does. Trying to help his pack he goes into enemy territory and steals the dagger and runs for his life. Things heat up when he steals Harpers' car. Let the games begin.

Levi stole a dagger from a vampire and he's in the process of getting away. This dagger will help him and his pack live in piece if he can make it out of this situation a live. Now he's looking for new transportation when he runs across a women changing a tire.

This is the first part of a 5-part novella series; a new part will be released each month. It's got a TOTAL cliffhanger ending that will have you screaming for part 2 (not out yet)! This is a really cool storyline that's pretty well written. There's the standard Paranormal Romance sex scene but this story could stand on its own even without the sex. I look forward to reading the rest of the story.

Why do I read serials? They're always too short and incomplete because parts are yet to come. I am too impatient for these types of stories. But, this one was a freebie so I thought I'd check it out. It has what I think will be an interesting storyline and a mix of supernaturals. I liked the H throughout, but I didn't really like the h until the end. I may pickup the omnibus once the full story has been written.

My first time trying PNR and I really enjoyed it, enough that I think I'm going to buy part 2 :-)
I like novellas/shorts as they tend to keep the action going, and VM Black definitely delivers in that respect. There's nothing boring, and nothing unnecessary in this story; the pacing is great and the writing is good. There's a bit of steam, but if you don't mind that, then give it a go - it's free and it doesn't take long to read, so what have you got to lose?

Levi Harris is on the run from a vampire mafia after he steels something that just might free his werewolf packs from the Vampire's subjugation. While making a getaway, he steels Harper's car to which she does not take kindly. Once she track him down, they begin a wild adventure of avoiding capture and a steamy romance. This is well written and a fun read.

This is definitely promising as the startup of a great shifter serial book. Storyline is well written, action packed, steamy hot and funny. Loved how bad boy Levi got Harper so worked up she never anticipated he would steal her car. Can't wait to see what comes out in the next book. I would recommend and plan to read more by this author.

Nicely written. Enjoyed this but the fact that it wasn't just one book annoys me. Can't read the rest until August.

I picked up this novel as I liked the Cora books. This one lived up to my expectations and I'm diving in for number 2.
So far, I do like the female lead better than Cora - so this book has done no wrong!

If you like alpha shifters and kick ass heroines this is a book for you. It's a great short read packed with hottness and action. I even have to say cuteness. I loved it and can't wait to read the next one.
