An illustrated "cultural history" of the cat collects the prose and poetry observations of the ancient Egyptians, ancient Chinese, T. S. Eliot, and Paul Gallico, among others. By the author of Mousing Days in Old Japan. National ad/promo.
A rather eccentric book. My (second hand) copy made even more so by the addition of handwritten poems and photos of cats cut from magazines glued in. The book is arranged roughly chronologically. The mention of the word "cat" seems to be the only criteria for inclusion. Some quotes seem to actually be anti-Cat, ie Rudyard Kipling's throwing things at cats and the inclusion of the inside of cat's ears as 'squalid things ' in The Pillow Book.
I like cats but, apparently, I don't like reading books about cats. The selections weren't bad but they didn't interest me at all. I also didn't like that there was seemingly no rhyme or reason to how the selections were put together.
