How's a woman supposed to nurse a broken heart when her pet sugar glider is driving her batty, or is that squirrelly? The deafening tick of her biological clock and having no Jazz to soothe her makes Amanda Bell Brown one frazzled forensic psychologist.
When Lieutenant Jazz Brown shows up at Amanda's door unannounced, her heart competes with her head as she struggles to do the right thing. Jazz says he wants to reconnect and make their relationship work. But there's just one tiny problem: his ex-wife is found murdered -- in his apartment.
Now Amanda has to strap on her sleuthing shoes -- the cute gold pair -- and work against time to discover the truth, both for herself and for Jazz. But as the body count rises and surprising clues begin to surface, Amanda wonders if anyone can know the heart of a man -- especially her man.
Claudia Mair Burney is the author of the novel Zora and Nicky: A Novel in Black and White, as well as the Amanda Bell Brown Mysteries and the Exorsista series for teens. Her work has appeared in Discipleship Journal magazine, The One Year Life Verse Devotional Bible, and Justice in the Burbs. She lives in Michigan with her husband, five of their seven children, and a quirky dwarf rabbit.
The stakes are high in this second book in the series when the love interest(Jazz) ex-wife is murdered and Amanda Bell and Jazz is trying to figure out who done it. Little more suspense in this. Such a fun cozy mystery series
I really like Christian fiction and cozy mysteries. This book is a combination of both. I like the chemistry between the two main characters. The biggest thing I dislike is how weak the female main character could be and how controlling her family is. She's 35 but you would think she's 18 or 19.
This is the sequel to Murder, Mayhem & a Fine Man. I really liked it.
The stakes are raised when Jazz's ex-wife turns up murdered in his apartment and Bell has to figure out what she thinks about that and what she is going to do.
I thought there was no way the ragamuffin diva, Claudia Mair Burney, could top her first story, Murder, Mayhem, and a Fine Man. But she did it with Death, Deceit, and Some Smooth Jazz. Totally amazing. The storyline was complex and well-thought-out. She had me really going there. The sugar glider just took the cake. I loved every scene and chapter. The usual tension between hero and heroine was present, but this time it culminated.
The author is a master at the "think of the worst thing that could happen, and make it happen" concept. Man, she had my head turning so often I got whiplash! I have to say, though, that more than once I wanted to slap Bell for messing with Jazz's head. Then again, I totally understood her "issues" that prevented her from accepting love from anyone, and her doubting something that seemed too good to be true. I was with Bell all the way and felt her confusion as well.
Being a social worker and having done counseling with many hurting people for years, I have to say that the author had the criminal psychology portion of the story perfected. The insight into Kate's messed-up past was flawless. Either the author did a lot of research, or she is really gifted with wisdom and insight into human character and dysfunction. Every scene was highly believable and amazing. Tension building all the way, but with interjected humor so hilarious that I laughed out loud more than once! Great way to keep the story moving along. Also, the sensual humor totally captivated me. Not to overuse the term, but that was also hilarious, and very honest, IMHO.
The biggest thrill in this story came when I figured out who killed Kate, and I WAS SO RIGHT! The author left just enough clues to point in the direction of the killer, but did so very slowly, and with absolute perfection. Also, the niggling perception that Jazz might have done it was tremendously applied. Wowsa! So does that make me smart, or the author a genuis at making me feel smart. :) You figure that one out.
Death, Deceit, and Some Smooth Jazz is masterful writing and highly entertaining. This probably ranks as my favorite sistah lit title thusfar. If you read it, I'm sure you'll agree that this is some serious entertainment with a powerful message. The takeaway value of this story is what made me love it so much. Plus, the mystery was compelling and complex. Man, the details involved in the plot were plentiful and so well-done it had me reeling. But I loved every minute of it. Oh, and the forensics were perfect. Excellent crime writing. Bravo! Get this one.
2.5 stars Ending unresolved romance. Forensic psychologist Amanda Bell Brown fell hard for police Lieutenant Jazz Brown during the case they investigated together, but Jazz, due to his Christian background and the fact that he is divorced, chose to break things off with Amanda because he didn’t feel free to pursue their relationship. There’s a definite chemistry, but Amanda has just about convinced herself that they are not going to be together. When Jazz shows up at her door, the sparks fly all over again - until Amanda’s medical examiner sister calls and reports that Jazz’s ex-wife, Kate, has been brutally murdered. All fingers point to Jazz as the culprit.
Amanda isn’t sure Jazz is guilty, but most of the time, she’s the only one championing his innocence. Can she subtly investigate the crime in order to clear Jazz’s name? What if her worst suspicions turn out to be true?
Death, Deceit and Some Smooth Jazz is the second book featuring Amanda, Jazz, and the gang. Author Claudia Mair Burney has a unique writing style that draws the reader in to the story while she weaves an intricate tale around you. The mystery portions of this novel are excellent. The reader is never left in the dark too long, yet the case is not quickly wrapped up but remains intriguing and keeps you wondering until the conclusion. The author also has a gift for creating black characters whom readers of any race can relate to and identify with.
Some of the spiritual elements of Death, Deceit and Some Smooth Jazz are excellent and thought-provoking while others often make the reader feel helpless and alone. It’s unfortunate that, even after all Amanda has experienced with her faith and the power of God, that she cannot seem to surrender to Him. And the sexual tension between the unmarried Amanda and Jazz, although realistic, seems to push the envelope for a Christian novel.
Overall, Death, Deceit and Some Smooth Jazz is an entertaining mystery with well-defined characters. Readers will look forward to the next installment of this series to discover what adventures the characters will be involved with next.
Absolutely loved this book!! From the characters to the story line, I loved it all!!
I think what I appreciate most about this book is that even though it was the second book in the series, the author did not overload the first chapter with information from the first book. It just picked up where the first book in the series left off.
From the first book I read by Mrs. Burney, I was hooked immediately and this one is no different. The story is compelling and also makes you want to take a step back and evaluate your life.
What has got to be the best thing, to me, in this book (and all of Mrs. Burney's books, as a matter-of-fact) is how it makes me want to be a better Christian and have a better relationship with God. The main character's interaction with God is just so great to me. I love it =]
Other likes:
~Description of each person and scene ~Love scene of the two main authors was not written (This definitely set the story up to higher standards for me) ~The "stop and go" banter between the two main characters ~All of the characters were portrayed well especially Addie Lee and Jack ~Quoted scriptures ~How God was evident in most all of the characters' lives
Dislikes:
The only thing I didn't like was how the main character was redundant with her insecurities and how she let it keep her apart from her love interest. At times while reading, I really wanted to shake her or give her a firm slap to snap her out of it =]
So clearly, I've gone on and on about how much I like it. And what's even better is that there is a book 3!! So excited for that =]

While Bell may be fully recovered from her bout with `Murder, Mayhem & A Fine Man,' she finds that she's at the scene of another murder. Only this time, the circumstances are more personal, sort of speak. Katie, Jazz's beautiful ex wife, is the unfortunate victim. To make matters worse, Jazz is the police's prime suspect, and Bell , finds that she just may be the star witness. While Bell battles her own insecurities, she knows in her heart that Jazz is innocent, isn't he?
Known for her flair of style, witticism and amateur sleuthing skills, Bell is unwavering when it comes to clearing Jazz's name, even if that means going against the people who love her. While she may not have the assistance of Lt. Jazz this go `round, she's unofficially inducted the assistance of the Detroit Police Department, and a former friend turned reporter, Kalaya, who God sent to her to feed. Can Bell learn to leave well enough alone, or will her incessant fears and need for the truth cost her her life and love?
I could barely contain myself, as I laughed aloud, loved, and felt the sincerity for each and every character in `Death, Deceit and Some Smooth Jazz.' Looking for a good read, filled with love, fear, murder, suspects, sassiness, truth and pain, then an Amanda Brown Mystery is totally for you!
Another great book by this author. I might not have enjoyed this one quite as much as the first in the series, but it was still really good. This was the continued story of Bell, who gets caught up in the drama of the man she's in love with - Jazz, when he gets implicated in a murder, and even some of his fellow officers think he did it. Bell doesn't want to believe he did it, but she's not really sure what to think. Even though the story is a murder mystery, Burney brings her humor into it, which makes this even more enjoyable. Now I have to try to find the last book in the series! Another bonus for me was the references she makes to metro Detroit, which is where I live. Loved that!
I listened to this book on tape. Sharon Washington is awesome as the narrator of this fine book. This is the first book of this author that I have read and I am so happy to have discovered her. I am a fan now of the Amanda Bell Brown Mysteries. Ms Mair was able to tell a sexy story while retaining Christian values. This novel was sassy and funny. I laughed a lot while listening! I will now read all of the books written by Ms Burney.
Book 2 was equally as juicy and hilarious as the first. This one however made Bell sound insane with her pendulum ways. Bell get your act together already! Felt sorry for Jazz and what he went through but glad it brought them together and challenged their love and faith. Rocky Rocky Rocky...tsk tsk
Good topics to deal with: insecurities, alcoholism, stereotypes, marriage expectations etc.
Couldn't wait to read book 3 after that bodice ripping! !!
Amanda purchases a new pet to take her mind off Jazz. It won't help, especially when he shows up at her apartment. Especially when her sister calls to tell her to leave him in the house as fast as she can. Jazz has been accused of murdering the woman that has kept them apart.
Had to finish off where the first book started. i love this series. what i love the most was the sexual innocence in the book. now we all know i am an aggressive woman, but i was enjoying the process of patience and pulling the reader in... love it
