SSU Boys #3

Undeclared

Rate this book
Liam Rush has never ventured too far outside the fences of his family farm, so college is a pretty big deal for him. Now he can finally claim his own identity– one that doesn’t involve football, hunting, farm work, or four overbearing brothers. But when he finds himself falling for the androgynous dancer at Trybe, where he works as a bouncer, things get confusing. He’s never been attracted to guys before. Not really. And what would the folks back home say if they knew?

Japanese-American mix Blake Himura has been on his own since he was seventeen, with no one to depend on but himself. He’s mere months away from realizing his dream of graduating college and becoming a dance instructor. Unstable men don’t factor into his plans, least of all “straight” boys who don’t mind ruining other people’s lives to keep their dirty little secrets. Liam is exactly the kind of complication Blake doesn’t need in his life. Unfortunately, his heart hasn’t gotten the memo.

2.5--I'm Too Old For This Shit--Stars!

This one left me pretty much speechless!

Partly my own fault....I found the last two books in this series pretty juvenile.

But....

This one was ridiculous!

The dialogue....

The MCs behavior....

Seriously.....speechless.

Saying adios to this series.....

Now I know why I love Maris Black: I feel I'm not reading the same tired old story yet again.

With her, I know I'm getting something innovative and different, something new. She never ceases to amaze me and after a while reading M/M, that's saying a lot.

It's not that her stories are profound or super "angsty" or weird. It's just that she is good . She writes about immature characters but they never rub you up the wrong way, just the opposite. I honestly don't remember an author that achieves that in the same measure this one does. When I read YA or NA books, I always connect with the characters because they are nice and seasoned. The challenge comes when they are childish and brainless. That's when I roll my eyes and kick the book away.

But I can't do that with Maris Black. She gives dignity to wild young people and she does it changing the well-worn scenes into surprising but real situations, with sparkling chemistry and sex, and with an almost tangible love that is never artificial and forced.

She makes me realize I don't need to hear the "I love you".

I liked this book much better than the second one. While Dan and Julian form a relationship from an intriguing beginning to a sad ending, Liam and Blake seemed a very unattractive couple, but surprisingly they fit beyond all expectation. The third pair of Trybe is now in high esteem from my part.

The characters never act as I expect them to do. They break ground and re-write the rules and they do so without the awareness that that's not the scheme of things. It's liberating reading how situations turn out with people who have their own personalities. This is a book written for the characters' sake, not for the reader's sake. It's so obvious and daring it could be violent but it's not. Instead, everything is well measured with the rhythm I've learnt to appreciate in the author. It looks like she doesn't know what she's writing and why. Don't let that fool you, she knows perfectly. Oh yes, I can assure you that.

The only weak point is the ending. Not because the scenes are bad chosen, but because I have the feeling the author was writing at her own rate and suddenly she realized there were only 20 pages left to reach the 300 and she had to speed up to make ends meet. Too many things happen in too few pages. That unbalanced the book and broke the pace marked for the whole story. It's a pity such a decision was made. However, I overlook that little detail because I'm not really annoyed at the series of events.

Liam has a twin brother, that will be interesting ^^.

PS: I'm aware that for most of people this will be nothing special. But for some reason that doesn't apply to me with this author *shrugs*.

Liam and Blake's story is book 3 of this series and it is a fantastic addition. Plenty of reviewers have gone over the deets of the book well. I'm just going to say that these guys are sexy as hell, their physical interactions are deliciously hot, and their emotional bond is sweet, volatile, and intense.

There's immediate attraction from the moment they meet, but they go through the gauntlet of misunderstandings, denial, and more denial before they find their HEA-- it's all so worth it. Blake's beauty, vulnerability and strength are like neon signs to Liam. 'Love me,' 'Keep me.' It takes some tribulations but they get it right.

Love that the other SSU boys are back but in no way overshadow the MCs. Liam's family scenes are warm, and you can feel the longing in Blake as he's pulled into their circle. Granny, the tattoo, the pocket watch, the boots-- lots of great moments. Really enjoyed this story. I'd say, though, that I was hoping to get Liam's family's reaction to the boys' relationship but that's left out. Maybe it will be touched on in more depth with the next book IF it's about Sammy, Liam's twin brother? In any case, too minor to quibble about since the ending was so satisfactory and left me a little teary-eyed with joy for these guys. (The cover doesn't hurt either).

The boys of SSU are back!! Didn't realize how much I missed some of these guys...Jeremy and Beck and Dan
Liam Rush lived a bit of a sheltered life...He grew up on a farm with his brothers...football star, hunter and farmer...All American type jock (gorgeous jock that is :)
He gets a job as a bouncer at Trybe a new club that Beck and Julian opened up and it's there that he comes into daily contact with beautiful Japanese-American dancer Blake...
Liam and Blake are total opposties...Blake was kicked out of his house by his mom at a young age for being gay and Liam grew up in a tight knit family
Liam's never really been exposed to different cultures/backgrounds and lifestyles so he's in for an eye opening experience since he's become friends with the guys
Liam and Blake meet and it's a combination of instant lust and hate on sight
Liam is so conflicted about his attraction to Blake and Blake is set on not getting involved with a "straight" guy...He's got plans and ambition and doesn't want any complications getting in the way
The push and pull between Liam and Blake was frustrating in the beginning (the good kind)
I kept wanting to smack Liam in the head and tell him to stop being such a jerk
They have their moments where they verbally spar with each other while Liam tries to hide his growing attraction. I really like the part where Liam gets truly honest with Blake while they are in their room at Trybe and Liam admits to being afraid of Blake and the way he makes him feel
I enjoyed the sexual tension between the two guys. Things start to really pick up when Liam brings Blake home with him
The dynamic of their relationship changes and it's all for the better
I simply do not want to spoil anything about this for other readers but oh about 62% my Kindle went up in flames...maybe I'll put a spoiler and you can decide if you want to take a peek

Listened to this latest book in the series on audio and have to say first that the narrator, Chris Patton, did a super job. He made the "drama" really pop and his multiple voices were great! I enjoyed this third book in the series, really liked the MCs and supporting characters as well. Good storytelling! Hoping for more in this series.

I’m not the biggest fan of Blake but I liked his character enough. At first, I find it odd that onset of the story, Liam’s already hanging out with the rest of the guys – especially knowing that they’re mostly gay and he’s not exactly out but blah-blah-blah, nothing major really. The ending wasn’t that strong compared with the first two books – I feel like the proposal isn’t a very good resolution. There should have been at least an introduction of Blake to Liam’s family as THE boyfie. I’m guessing that we’ll have a gist of that event come Sammy’s (Liam’s twin) story?

Thank you Ms. Black for granting my wish! This was a great read. I hated how wishy-washy Liam was but I understand that when you believe you are a certain way and that image in your head changes, it can be hard. I adored Blake and felt so bad for everything he went through. I enjoyed Grams and laughed out loud when she asked for her nickel. Absolutely loved the ending only now we need Seth and Sammy. *winks*

To be honest, I expected book 3 to be about Seth, after getting Jeremy & Beck as well as Dan's story. Blake intrigued me, but Liam just seemed to appear out of thin air. It seems he was set up as love interest. After listening a bit to the audiobook, i was quickly pulled into the story, though, and wanted to know how this story would play out. Like all of the SSU boys, Liam and Blake have an insane chemistry and are very hot together. I really liked the accent in the audiobook, it really adds to the story. The cover model is HOT AS HELL and just my type. As hot as Liam is though, I was kind of hoping for Blake to dump his ass and give his brother a shot. Some of the things Liam did would have been deal breakers in my book, especially as he knew Blake's history. He seemed very immature and as wishy-washy as Blake says. HOWEVER, he does have a gentle and romantic side and he can be super sweet. Blake is very sexy and sensual and brings some vulnerability and angst into the story. I wanted to protect him. I loved their time with Liam's family, but I was disappointed that there was no real resolution with Gabe and the rest of the family. Readers don't get to see how everything turns out in this book, even though a lot of this book was about the effects Liam and Blake's relationship would have.

Overall, though a very hot and fun book.

I hate when these books end. I am totally in love with this series. I know now that Maris is in my top 5 authors.

Please write another book like tomorrow.

I love love love Liam, I almost didn't feel that Blake was deserving of him. I of course decided he was when it was all said and done. I suck at reviews but please know this is a great series and this is my favorite so far.

This was the most unexpected of the "SSU Boys" series and also the least flawed. I'm not sure I enjoyed it the most, since I fed my id pretty deep with the first two books, but I think it held up the strongest in plot, story, and characterization while maintaining the hyper-masculine tone Maris Black usually excels in.

I was actually not super excited to read this one. Liam came out of the blue in the last book in the last few chapters or so, and I didn't care for Blake at first. He seemed like a troublemaker who didn't have Dan's best interests in heart in Smitten. But once I began the book, it felt like I was reading a whole new series. Our faves from the last two books (Beck, Jeremy, Dan, and Julian) were all featured at decent length, but poor Seth, whose book should've came before Liam and Blake's, really got sidelined. A lot of this book took place in Blake and Liam's insular world where their relationship is new and tender and secret.

Out of all the family dynamics of the series, I enjoyed Liam's family the most and I found them to be the most realistic. They had the potential to make Liam's life as a gay man more difficult, but Liam soon realized they were his family and would love him either way, which is refreshing. His Straight Boy Problem (held by both Beck and Julian before him) was much less annoying than I thought it would be. I actually kind of liked his quiet little "I don't think I'm straight" admission after he and Blake have mind-blowing sex. He is very young, and he's falling fast. The stakes felt appropriately melodramatic.

This book has its fair share of melodrama (namely ), but it didn't feel quite as ridiculously overblown as . Black toned it down just a hair for this book and I think it really worked. I also think she got in touch with her characters a bit more and gave them some agency, such as . She has the habit of giving her "bottoms" a more immature personality, but that is flipped with Liam and Blake.

She does exoticize Blake here and there, which was a little icky. The first page contains the disgusting term , which I thought was a stylistic choice in Liam's less-worldly voice until the word was used again. Even if this book was the best romance I'd ever read, it wouldn't break 5 stars based on that alone.

I'm excited to see what will happen with this series. I definitely thought it was done, since the whole series was written over three years ago, but it appears Black has more in store for us. And despite my many objections to her style and character choices, I just can't resist her romances!

I loved this sizzling episode of the SSU Boys series, which features college freshman Liam, the hunky farm boy who appeared in the back half the previous book, ‘Smitten’, and the exquisite Japanese-American Blake, an independent, goal-orientated dancer who is paying his way through college by strip dancing. From the first chapter the fire between these two college boys fairly melted my Kindle and I could not put this book down until I’d finished it.

Tall, brawny, and confident, Liam has always been surrounded by females eager to gain his attention. He’s entertained enough of these willing partners to assume his sexuality lies firmly on the straight and narrow. One look at the captivating, near-nude male writhing in dance at a truck stop bar propels him to a level of heated lust that has him scrambling to assert control over his libido—and his sanity. Determined to ignore the gorgeous, but uncompromising Blake, for the first time in his life Liam is assaulted by emotions he has never faced before, among them—fear. Is Blake the one for Liam and if he is, does it mean Liam is gay? And if he is gay, can he handle it? Can his family? And worse…does Blake feel anything for him?

Poised and self reliant, pocket-Adonis Blake has only one thing on his mind—completing his last year of college and landing a job as a dance instructor. This will provide him the stability in life he’s never had. Stripping to earn his tuition has taught Blake to tune out the attentions of the salivating admirers who cram his briefs with hard cash—they will only obstruct his goals. So what is it about the hunky, too-hot-for-his-own-damn-good Liam that Blake can’t ignore? “Farm boy” is straight or so he says…so why can’t Blake stop thinking about him? Liam is a dangerous obsession Blake can’t afford, but the fire between the two burns hotter with each encounter, and working at the same club ignites a blaze that can’t be put out.

This is a fantastic story! I laughed, I cried, I wept, and I loved every minute of it. The characters are complex and rich with emotion and personality, adding to the exciting, almost dogfight of a romance between these two enchanting men. Familiar characters from the previous books appear and it is great to revisit the old gang, but it is the inner angst and the “swept away” emotion of the two leads which make this book a truly sparkling male-male romance.

Liam is beyond hot as the “undeclared” of the title. Experiencing his cool confidence rocket to hot confusion and descend to chilling fear—before his innate courage and easy charm reinstated itself—was a real treat. Kudos to the author for the lovely sketches of his physical appearance that in my mind took on the likeness of a buff, towheaded Elan Scully.

Blake was equally superb as the sassy, self-assured Japanese-American and his scrappy charm was only heightened by his poignant choice to place his fragile heart on the line for love. And dayum, the scene where he dresses as a girl to experience a dance with Liam nearly tore my heart out. That’s not a spoiler because much occurred between these two hot men that spun my heart, head, and libido…in all the right ways.

Maris Black has always created a holistic, almost 3-D reading experience in her books and that sublime quality has simply ratcheted to another level with this story. Excellent settings, concise, but fulfilling descriptions, and the inclusion of family backstories, add warmth, depth, and humor, which balance perfectly with the heat and passion of the love story. The heat and passion scenes are a lovely mix of playful, raunch, and sizzle and increase the intensity of this riveting, sensual romance. I highly recommend this book and the entire series, a prime example of excellent male-male Romance!

Thank you, Maris Black, for this mesmerizing and memorable “dance of love” story.

4.5 star review by Dan

Welcome to the third book in Maris Black’s SSU Boys series. Once again we’re back with the familiar crowd. This time Julian and Beck have gotten their club “Trybe” open to the public. Liam, who we met briefly in the previous book “Smitten” is a bouncer at the club. Imagine his surprise when Blake shows up as one of the regular dancers.

For anyone who hasn’t read “Smitten”, Liam and Blake had a huge falling out during that book when Liam invited Blake to sleep in his room, and then left his jeans on, stayed way at the far side of the bed and insisted that he was straight. The next day he treated Blake like a leper and they haven’t spoken since.

Now they are back, stuck working together at “Trybe” and Liam is still insisting he is straight, even though he can’t even glimpse Blake without getting a woody. Ms. Black takes us through a journey of self-discovery and acceptance in this book. Along the way we and Blake meet Liam’s family, a bunch of bow making, bow hunting, plaid shirt and baseball cap wearing rednecks and every one of the guys in the family is as big as Liam. We also get to meet Blake’s charming mother (said facetiously).

Do the two stand a chance of becoming a couple? How is it even possible with Liam being straight? How do they get by the family drama on both Blake’s and Liam’s end? And what will happen when Blake meets Liam’s identical twin brother…who just happens to be gay?

I recommend this book, as I do all of Maris Black’s books. It is well written, well edited and while there is plenty of sex, it isn’t on every other page with filler words in between. There is an actual story. I enjoyed this book as much as the previous ones in the series. I would recommend you read the other books in the series before this one. The characters flow through into each subsequent book, so reading the first two books will help with continuity. My advice? Pick up all three today! Pinned, Smitten and Undeclared.

SSU Boys just keep getting better and better!!!

I love Maris Black's SSU series. The first book of the series, Pinned, introduced us to Beck and Jeremy. Two college wrestlers that fall in love and just can't get enough of each other. It's truly one of my favorites. And when I learned there was book number two of the series out, well it was a no-brainer. I had to read it. I Loved it..... the second book, Smittened, cemented my love of Maris Black's writing.

In Smitten we're introduced to two more characters from SSU college. Here we get Dan's and Julian's story. I loved their story and honestly didn't think Maris Black could improve on Pinned......she did.

And now, Undeclared (SSU Boys Book 3). I believe as much as I loved the first book of the series, this is probably my favorite. This is Liam's and Blake's story. And what a story. Liam struggles to accept his feeling for the out-and-proud dancer at the new club owned by our friends Julian and Beck. And Liam's a bouncer there as well.
Liam is one hot blooded, country boy. When he decides what he wants, he go for it. And he wants Blake. As in all of Maris Black's books the sex is hot,hot,hot......

What I like about this series are the characters and how they all continue to play a part in every book. There's not just a cameo of Beck and Jeremy or Dan and Julian. Both couples play major parts in each new book. This gave the series continuity and better character development. You don't have to read the first two books in the series to enjoy this book. But to really enjoy all the characters and their relationships I highly recommend it.

I can't wait to see what Maris Black has in store for the next sequel to SSU Boys....... Did I mention Liam has a twin? Let's hope we see more of brother Sammy in the next sequel.

*****5 GIGANTIC STARS*****

I wish I could give this book and series more than five stars!!!

........There's Gay and then there's Gayyyyyy and man this book was Gayyyyyy (I loved it!!!). I liked Liam and Blake first of all, especially my boy Blake with his wit and bad attitude, I just love a man with personality and Blake had that in spades HA!!! I NEVER read a book by Maris Black before but after reading this one I think I'd have to start at the beginning of this series, I was pleasantly surprised.

Liam was the closeted redneck from (of course) a homophobic community, that hated homos and anyone vaguely portraying homosexual behavior **sighs** the story of life it would seem. Despite all that Liam, a strapping, gorgeous, mature and imposing young man, finds himself desperately falling for Blake, the straight forward, very Gay, gorgeous and blunt, half Japanese punk, who for all intents and purposes communicated his hate for all Liam represents. (Closet Case indeed)

The story was cute, I was caught up in all the emotions and angst that these MC's went through. Yeah there were times when I sorta got bored but those moments were few and far between (thank God). All of Liam's inner turmoil got tiresome at times but I understood the reasons he felt the way he did and hey, it all worked out in the end right? Overall I really liked their story and the manner in which it all unfolded, so kudos to Maris Black for creating such a delightful read and yes this is one I would definitely recommend!

So this is a weird review for me to write because if i was just going off of the romance and the characters this book would be a 5/5 star book but i'm not.

Maris has a problem in this series where she leaves plot points unresolved because she just gets caught up in the romance and forgets about them. This stopped the first book from being a 5/5 star book for me too and even though it didn't effect my rating too much it was still a problem in book 2 as well. But this was an even BIGGER problem in this book as basically nothing was resolved, not even the problems between Blake and Liam and their families were resolved.

This is not a complete story, just because she put the part at the end in it doesn't make it any more complete, in fact it feels like a cop out. I loved this book and the plot was great and both Blake and Liam were great in my opinion so it annoys me SO MUCH that the author ended it there. It feels like she should have made either a book with POV's from all the books because she created new story lines for all of them and never resolved them or a book about Seth which should have happened anyway.

Also where were Truck and Gretchen? their best friend opens a club and they just aren't there? WOT.

I'm ending this book feeling completely unsatisfied and i hate that but overall this book is a 6/10.

Maris Black has surpassed all expectations! The story of Liam and Blake was more than a scorching hot love story. The author created a story that flowed Liam and Blake's past background, their insecurities, and their reaching for each other, into a beautiful woven tapestry. Liam was the complete straight country boy while Blake was the proud gay dancer who learned to do what he had to, to survive and accomplish his goals. When you read this story, you will love each of them, and with every sentence you read will want their love to succeed.

This book can be read as a stand alone but I encourage you to read the first two books, Pinned and Smitten, because they will give you insight to the other characters surrounding this story. The other books are so very good with stories that will make you cry from anguish for the characters to happiness, as this book does.

I generally don't give reviews because I'm not very good at writing my thoughts. I love the way Maris Black writes her stories.

Stretching Believability Again--And Getting Away With It

This crowd of jocks from Southeast State University in Georgia has a tendency to get itself into all sorts of same-sex trouble, and this third installment takes the proverbial cake.

But what a bunch of crumbs author Maris Black leaves us to lap up. Liam (on the cover, really?) and Blake (total opposite in stature and ethnicity) are one of the great mismatched couples of this genre. Yet their intense relationship, the hedonistic plot, the expose of nasty undersides of a redneck society--however unbelievable it may seem--works in this fast-moving, wildly incongruous, blast of heat.

Out of the ashes of this book one would fervently hope Maris Black gives us a final installment which is a little more laid back, sweet, and kind--but just as hot. She left us with two characters on the sidelines who could do it for us, and if she does, this series would be locked down tight. As it is right now, it's worth grabbing and consuming.

Im not changing the ratings because when I first read them I liked them. However, I will say that I've re-read this series and I guess so much time and so many books have changed me. Right now at this moment this series to me is worth two stars. It is immature and far fetched. The characters are poorly developed and somewhat shitty in a way. Overall all the books in this series are exciting in a sense but it's not the caliber or writting I am now used to. I've been spoiled by authors like NR WALKER and JAY NORTHCOTE. No disrespect to this autor like I said when I read them first I liked them, I was new to the genre and I thought they were hot and that I'm sure swayed my rating.
This series is somewhat unrealistic and the characters, college students, behave in a manner that really just turned me off this time around.
