In this creative approach, Mark Allan Powell inquires into the thrust of Matthew's Gospel in categories related to pastoral theology rather than systematic theology. Fresh insights are gained into the intentions of the evangelist.Included are chapters on Matthew's understanding mission stewardship worship social justice teaching
This is my favorite monograph on Matthew's theology thus far. Powell takes his cue from pastoral theology and examines Matthew's theology of mission, worship, teaching, stewardship, and social justice. Obviously setting things in a frame, comes with some massaging of the particulars but on a whole I found his treatment of Matthew's themes compelling. His discussion of the beatitudes is a gold mine, and answered some questions I was puzzling over. This is short but a worthwhile read.
Very quick read with some good thoughts on how the Gospel of Matthew can inform church theology. Powell does make some statements that I do not think are well supported and could be claimed to be contradicted by statements further along in the Bible, so that certainly detracts from it. Nevertheless, it is good for a jumping off point for study.
There are some good insights in Mark Allan Powell's earlier work on Matthew that I hadn't thought through. This is a little more on the analysis side, still relying heavily on word usage and it reflects a more scholarly tone even with the title (A pastoral theology of Matthew's gospel) than many of Mark Allan Powell's later works. Worth the read and reflection.
