The leader of a lynchpin Eastern Bloc nation has been increasingly erratic, belligerent, destabilizing the entire region. On the cusp of reversing the personal campaign that is destined to bring war, he is assassinated. His death comes with no warning, draws no blood, and leaves no trace; a puppet with its strings cut. A new assassin, a new terrorist, can kill anyone, anywhere, anytime. He is undetectable, untraceable, unstoppable. He will bring governments, nations, and continents to their knees one leader at a time. His next target is Walter Rocaena. To fight this enemy Walter will need extraordinary help, but he hasn’t seen Darren Kiel in over a year. Can Walter find him in time and, even if he does, how can anyone stop an assassin that can kill with a thought without ever being near the target? Even if it is possible, can they do it before civilization itself unravels?
Geoffrey Germann earned a B.S. from Rutgers University, an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and has held research positions at both Fortune 500 corporate and national research laboratories. He has studied both the science of fiction and the tools of today's most miraculous technological advancements so fervently that the two have begun to blend. His vast experience with today's most cutting-edge technology imbues his work with a magnetic, inescapable plausibility and puts him in a unique position as a fiction writer.
Darren Kiel is a vigilante, a super hero. Who doesn’t love someone who works undercover saving those unable to save themselves, never needing or wanting credit or acknowledgement?
Darren is an introvert and has been alone for so long, he is craving interaction with another human. He works in disguise so only has fleeting contact and can never let anyone know who he really is. After 200 days a man could lose his mind.
Until…
He becomes part of a superhero, scifi team: Darren has the suit, Faye has the cloak, Walter is the brains and the means, Brigham is the gopher, and Ives is the techie, the inventor. The characters are unique individuals, well developed, flaws and all. I would love to be a part of their team.
It makes me wonder what super heroes are lurking in our world, invisible to us. Could it be your next door neighbor?
The technology is very realistic and who knows what the government keeps secret from us. Maybe some of it is being used today?
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Surgical by Geoffrey Germann.
Thank you to author Geoffrey Germann for sending me your book and giving me the opportunity to read your work! This was an interesting read. I wouldn't say it's what I "normally read" but it has aspects of what I normally read. I would call it a near future sci-fi murder mystery/crime thriller. Anywho, I love the idea of Darren's (main character) exo-suit and all the things it can do (I imagine it looks like a Halo Spartan suit would) and I also loved that a weakness in it was discovered, being completely invincible would make for a boring story :) A major plus about this book was that it was almost 100% lacking romance. No ridiculous distractions thrown in for no reason just to appease a female audience, hip hip hooray!!! Tally up another reason why books are better than movies. I still think I don't fully understand the weapon that the assassin was using but I do think it was an interesting idea, and I hope that perhaps it gets expanded on (full blown war?!) if the series continues. Something to do with electricity and wavelengths and possibly lasers that can make little explosions anywhere that seem like they come from nowhere, leaving behind no blood or obvious evidence. I know, that doesn't sound good and is probably unhelpful but I promise it's neat!
I just received this book two days ago and am both mad it took so long to finish it, yet so disappointed that it's over so soon. I loved seeing some familiar characters (from Prepare, Mr. Germann's previous novel) and the storyline moved along so fluidly that I hated to put it down. This story follows Darren Kiel, who sort of reminds me of Iron Man...but way more bada**! His friend and mentor Walter Rocaena needs his help in tracking down a new kind of terrorist. One that can kill someone with just a thought. In a race against time, Darren and a few of Walter's other friends try to stop a madman before he creates utter anarchy all over the world.
This is the second book I've read by Geoffrey Germann, the first being Prepare, and I have to say that I am impressed with his storytelling abilities. The books are well written and manage to completely immerse you in the story to the point where you are both rooting for them, and sad when something doesn't happen the way you'd hoped it would. I highly recommend both Surgical, as well as Prepare and give them both 5 stars! Keep up the amazing writing and I hope to see more of Dr. Darren Kiel in the future!
Darren Kiel continues his secret quest to do his part to make the world a better place. He uses his remarkable suit to fight crime. But Darren is not the only person that is using technology to do wondrous things. One of those people is using his technology to be able to target any person at any time and any place. He is using this power to target leaders in different European countries in an effort to destabilize the current situation and possibly cause another World War. Darren is used to working on a much smaller scale though. But when his old friend asks for his help, he finds himself working with a group of people that all that special abilities to stop this new threat to world peace.
This is superheroes for adults. Don't expect aliens that can fly and bend steel with their bare hands or mutants with the ability to turn to ice or shoot lasers from their eyes or anybody that gains superhuman powers after being exposed to radiation, dashed with chemicals or bitten by radioactive spiders. The heroes, and villains, in this story use technology to pull off their incredible feats. The greatest "power" is their intelligence. They rely more heavily on thinking their way through a problem than wading in and bashing things (but there is plenty of bashing things in the story).
Darren Kiel makes me think of Iron Man if Bruce Wayne (perhaps with Reed Richards help) made the armor. He doesn't fly, shoot missiles, or crush tanks with his armored fists. He does use his highly analytical mind to use his armor to the best of its ability, including keeping a very low profile. He knows that the more visible he is while following his mission, the more likely he will be overwhelmed by his foes.
The other special individuals with which Darren teams, are just as believable in their powers and in their motivations. This includes the villain of the story. The story mixes action and suspense to keep the reader wanting to read just a few more pages. The next thing you know, you have read all night and you are going to have a long day ahead of you.
This is a superhero story that could really happen. A story that uses realistic powers and origins for its characters with motivations that make sense. There is no spandex or energy bolts from a characters hands, but it is still one of the best superhero stories that I have read in a long time.
I recieved this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Well done Mr German! I loved Surgical! After finishing Prepare, I was not sure if this would be a series but was very glad to learn that this book continued to follow Darren Kiel. Darren is a character that is very easy to love. With an agenda that I am sure most of us applaud, I was quickly pulled in. Still trying to rid the world of crime, Darren is in Europe tackling criminals in a way only he can, when he is called to help his friend and mentor Walter. This time the bad guy can seemingly control and kill with his mind. With twists and surprises, Surgical is a fantastic second book in a very imaginative series. Thank you Mr Germann and please keep writing!
Surgical by Geoffrey Germann, excellent, action packed, lots of futuristic technology. Thank you for the opportunity to read your book. I loved Prepare and Surgical just follows Prepare. Excellent. I will be passing this to my grandson. He loves your work especially Prepare.
When I first read Prepare, the first book in the Darren Kiel novels, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the plot-line of the story and the characters. I'm a hardcore romance book reader, so reading books where there's no romance was interesting and intriguing to me. Odder, I don't usually like science fiction and thrillers, but there's something so enthralling and entertaining about the author's writing. From the first page I was intrigued and this book was even better than the first book, which I didn't think was possible. I highly recommend this book to everyone!
This story opens up with the assassination of the leader of a lynchpin Eastern Bloc nation. Before his death, he was erratic and making campaigns that was destined to bring war. The death came with no warning, didn't leave a sign of a entrance or exit wound, and the killer left no trace.
This killer cannot be caught because he's untraceable and undetectable. Not to mention they don't know what weapon he's using and he can choose anyone as his target and kill them anytime and anywhere. No one is safe and this killer will bring chaos to the nations of his victims. We don't know who the killer is, or where he's at, but we know whom his next victim is. Walter Rocaena.
Walter will need the help of Darren Kiel, an old friend and a formidable and intelligent ally, as well as some other friends if he plans on living. But how can you face an invisible enemy who kills with only a thought?
This book is so good! When the author asked me if I wanted to review his second book, after loving his first one, I knew I was going to love this book. I love how the author incorporated technology and mystery into this story to make one fantastic plot. I highly, highly recommend this book. It's excellent!
My favorite quote: "Fortunately, despite predisposition, despite pre-existing proclivities, energy can be redirected, character can be taught."
I received a free copy from G. German after reading and reviewing the first installment Prepare. It’s been waiting for me for little over a year now. Sorry, I’m working on getting better I swear.
I really enjoyed Surgical. It’s part hard sci-fi superheroes and part crime mystery with plenty of action. This time there was no ramp up required, I was in the story and hooked quick. I love how it builds up and rolls through with the action. Yet it’s not a brainless shoot ‘em up.
Do I understand the science? Not completely, but I get it enough for the story and I love how it’s explained. With all the nerds, it’s just natural and awesome.
I love how we saw more of Mysterious Save the Day Woman. Her character? ON POINT! But Fuck Her Storyline ending. Seriously. That just fucking blows.
I may not like all the characters as much as her, but they’re all flawed and fantastically human. The switching perspectives worked without a hitch and it was great seeing all their viewpoints personally.
Except, well, the villain. That’s standard and well, not bad but against everything else, they’re disappointing. Not in being a sneaky, challenging adversary, but as a person. Mmmm, that’s not quite right either. It’s just a standard psychopathic enemy, which I’ve seen a lot of. But he played his part well.
The only thing I actually don’t like is the cover. I understand the constraints of being an Indie author but still, **sad face**. That’s just cosmetic though. Please don’t judge this book by the cover!
I would like to start off by thanking Geoffrey Germann for sending me this book. Honestly I had forgotten that when I won the first book in the series on the giveaway, he had offered to send me the second book also if I enjoyed Prepare. Well I did and asked for the second to be sent when he finished it. It took him a little longer to finish (about two years after the first one), but it was time well spent.
He wrote an excellent sequel. It was the perfect mixture of old and new that many second books fail to capture. His character development continued flawlessly and practically. His writing style is fantastic. And the story is amazing and fantastical and even believable, with little to no plot holes that I could discern.
The story mixes superheros, technology, and government involvement in a very interesting way. And again, in a way that is believable. When reading the story, even though some of the technology is so out there, I can still say to myself that yes I can see that happening.
All and all, this book was a huge winner to me. And anyone that enjoys scifi needs to check this series and this author out. Just make sure you read the first book in the series before reading this one, or else a lot of the stuff won't make a lot of sense. And again, thank you Geoffrey Germann for giving me the opportunity to read another one of your books. I look forward to your next.
I received a copy of Surgical for free from the author, Geoffrey German , in return for agreeing to read and review the book. I'd previously read Prepare and was excited to read another Darren Kiel adventure. This one was a lot different from Prepare, falling more into the category of spy-thriller than it's predecessor, which had a super-hero/crime plot. I enjoyed reading Surgical almost as much as Prepare. It was fast-paced and easy to read. I read the final 200 pages in one sitting. The characters had some background to them, but probably could have been a little more developed. We got a look at the psyche of Faye, for example, but I would have enjoyed getting a deeper view into her character. The plot itself was original and creative. Germann does a good job of creating a fantasy world that could fall into the laws of the real world in which we all live. All in all, I would recommend Surgical to someone looking for an exciting and quick book to read this summer while at the beach or in the hammock and I look forward to reading Darren Keil's next adventure.
Surgical is a creative novel where secret operatives with high tech gear have the ability to greatly influence the world around them. Some of that technology can be used for good - protecting innocent civilians from dangerous attacks, keeping the streets safer, stopping crimes. But when in the wrong hands, that kind of technology has the ability to cripple the world we know and to be used for great harm and destruction.
The novel is great for people who love action packed espionage and reading about futuristic inventions and creations. Some of the technology was so creative that it took me a little while in the beginning to catch up with the story and to figure out what was going on. There is a lot of action and with lives in the balance, it's a page turner to see what happens next.
Surgical is the sequel to the novel Prepare, although it can be read as a stand alone book as well.
Disclosure: the author was generous to send me Surgical for free in return for an honest review.
Daniel Kiel has been called upon by his friend, Walter Rocaena, as Walter has been targeted by an assassin and really needs Daniels assistance. The premier of Moldova has already been assassinated without so much as a drop of blood. How was this done? The Prime Minister in Prague is targeted and when he tries to escape with his family, he doesn't quite make it. Whoever is attacking them can target them through windows, walls, etc. No one is safe. Next to be targeted is the President of Romania. Now Walter, Daniel and the rest of the crew have to come up with some sort of plan to protect the President and his family and fellow associates.
This book is a real page turner and has you guessing as to what the outcome will be.
Mr. Germann sent me a copy of this book and I am grateful, so grateful, that he chose me to be someone to read and comment on his story. I look forward to his next book, First Colony.
First of all, I want to thank Mr. Germann for being kind enough to provide a copy. (Mr. G2 you so nice!)
This time around Walter finds himself in a tight spot, preyed upon by an invisible assassin that has been attacking some very important people with pinpoint precision, unseen and undeterred by conventional means. You know, like walls. So, very much against his wishes, Darren must put a pause on his forced vacations, drop the paranoid lone wolf act for a bit and come along to, not only save Walter's life, but stop the assassin before the political unbalance he's creating brings Europe to its knees.
I can't believe that went by so quickly! Once I was able to sit down and enjoy it, I couldn't help but to devour it completely. The author once again writes a fast-paced adventure with high stakes and some very cool gadgets. The characters are deliciously flawed, sifting trough their own issues, coming together as a ragtag team of well rounded individuals.
Surgical is an excellent sequel to Prepare. We find characters we know but it stands well on its own. The straight forward storytelling and realistic technology sets this apart from others in the genre. You should read Prepare if you are interested in more technical details. If Surgical has any fault it would be the dialog. While the characters are well developed otherwise, all seem to speak in the same voice. Dialog isn't easy. Overlook it and you've got a quick, enjoyably good read indeed. I expect Geoffrey Germann will continue to improve his writing mastery and his next release to be an even better treat.
This book was terrific. I love Darren Kiel as a hero! The man even rides a Ducati! This story was fast-paced, exciting, intelligent, full of crazy, but believable technology and quite the roller coaster ride. I have added the series to my list on Fict Fact's website to be notified when the next book comes out. I've also highly recommended this book to any of my friends, family and acquaintances who might enjoy it. I say if you liked Ironman or Batman movies there's a real good chance you would like this series. I will eagerly be waiting for the next book, First Colony, to come out! Thank you G2 :)
This is the second Darren Kiel book I have read, and my favorite so far. You cannot help but be intrigued by the main character and the things he can accomplish with his "suit".
You could read this book as a stand alone novel or as a sequel to the first novel Prepare.
I would consider it to be a thriller with sci-fi background. Are these weapons possible in the future? Who knows.
For some reason, both in this novel and the first I just cannot do not make a connection with the female lead. From a female point to view, there is something off in both female leads.
I enjoyed the book and would recommend it and looking forward to a third.
This novel is written with surgical precision and a truly complex mystery is the result.
Someone is manipulating and killing leaders of Eastern Bloc nations seemingly by sending out a 'thought.' Technology is the game but integrity wins the war. This is a high technology murder mystery.
The plot 1s fraught with suspense, ethics, and very possible scenarios to be fond in the 21st Century. I found myself turning the pages with a speed I haven't used in quite a time.
This novel is for mystery, spy, and conspiracy readers. My only disappointment was that it was over so quickly. I hope there will be a third novel shortly. The first novel "Prepare" was a treat as well.
Geoffrey Germann continues the Darren Kiel series with his new novel, Surgical. It was definitely worth the wait. In Darren Kiel, we get a realistic, earthborn superhero who, thanks to some fabulous technology can do some truly amazing things. The story centers around some all-too-possible (maybe even likely) technology that is misused for weaponry to manipulate world leaders and influencers. This is a high-speed sci-fi thrill ride to the end. I am looking forward to whatever is coming next from this author, and from his character, Darren Kiel.
I received a free copy of this book through the GoodReads First Reads giveaways.
Surgical by Geoffrey Germann was an ok read for me. I'm not a big scifi fan and I was unaware that this was Germann's writing style. Apparently this is the second Darren Kiel story and I was lost since I did not read the first. The author did not provide a lot of details of Kiel's back story. The author is very creative with his ideas, but for me I did not find it believable as a possible terrorism tactic. All in all, if you are a big scifi fan this may be the ideal book for you, but it wasn't for me.
Surgical is the sequel to Prepare. Darren Kiel is still fighting crime with the use of his suit of armor and technology. He has learned to not stay in one place very long so he does not attract the interest of authorities. He is contacted because his friend Walter needs help. There is a new threat from an unknown enemy who is using some type of new weapon that seems to be able to see everywhere.
The concept of these books is very interesting and imaginative. Both of these books by Geoffrey Germann are very well written.
Mr. Germann, you have done it again! Darrem Keil comes through! This is a little bit superhero and a little futuristic, neither of which is what I would normally read, but this author reslly pulls you in and you really don't want to put it down! Thank you, Geoffrey Germann! Keep writing! I am looking forward very much to your next novel, "First Colony". I will definitely read anything you author!
I really enjoyed this fast paced book. The first few pages had me hooked with unseen forces fighting evil. Muggers didn't stand a chance and kept getting zapped from someone or something they could not see. A cloak that renders a person invisible has amazing potential and a suit of armor that is impervious to any assault including knives and guns. This is some of the cool inventions that help these group of people do good around the world.
Mr. Germann sent me his book free of charge. I am very grateful for his generosity. I enjoyed the story very much. It took me a while to remember the characters, and I would have liked a bit of background on them to catch up a bit. The plot was very good and very scary. The back cover says "a new assassin, a new terrorist, can kill anyone, anywhere, anytime." You have to read the book to find out how this is done. Technology can be frightening.
The second book in the Darren Kiel series is probably as good if not better than the first. In the first book Prepare, we get to know the character and his background. In Surgical, we get to see what Darren Kiel can really do with other technological geniuses surrounding him. If you like technology, futuristic equipement and a great story. This book is for you. I'm looking forward to First Colony.
This was sent to me by the author - the sequel to a book I won as a Goodreads First-reads giveaway.
This was a good sequel - I enjoyed the way the characters from the first book were developed. The plot was interesting and I was engrossed in the book all the way through to the end. I particularly enjoyed the innovative uses of technology in this action book.
I have been waiting for this book to come out and it was well worth the wait. Once again Geoffrey Germann does not disappoint, I just love his writing style, imagination and use of technology. If you want a suspense filled thrill ride than his books are for you. A super fantastic read, I can't wait for his next book. His books are truly amazing.
Thank you to the author Geoffrey Germann for sending the second book surgical. I won prepare on goodreads and offered to send the second one. they are really great books. Surgical is the second book in the Darren kiel novels. It is fast-paced keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed this book and hope there will be a third book.
I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy the book after the first couple chapters. I think it would have been better if my reading time wasn't broken up so much. Once I got time to sit down with the book for a longer period of time I really enjoyed it. I found it imagitive and occasionally took me in directions i didn't see coming. I highly recommend this book!
Thank you to the author for sending this book and I am giving an honest review. This book captured my interest from page one. The story is amazing, and kept me on edge. I was happy to see that the Darren Kiel character was continuing. I hated to see the book end and hope there will be another in the series.
Had this one sitting on the shelf for a while and finally picked it up. Great overall read. Read it at the beach and was a great action packed adventure. Very interesting scientific premise on survalince and assassination. Some minor gripes on plot but nothing that took away from the experience and enjoyment of the book.
