On planet Bylar, the Bylaran civil war has pitted Bylaran settler against Fenturi native for over three centuries, and the Fenturi have all but been exterminated. Rumors abound that the destructive Ragil Horde has returned after a millennia of absence, and they are stronger and more evil than ever before. If the System is to survive, the Mari--a Fenturi born under the Mari moon--must be found to power the Legion's only defense against the Horde's superior firepower.
Garen, the fierce captain of the Bylaran Legion Stalkers, has been charged by the new king to find the Mari. But the Mari, Dare, doesn't even know who she is, and she has more than enough reason not to ever trust anyone Bylaran. Destined to work together, Garen and Dare struggle to overcome their prejudices and pain-filled pasts in a race against time to stop the Horde. In the process, the two do more than save the System, but save themselves with a love brighter than blue Starfire.
*This is an 82,403 word science fiction romance. It's a big book for a big universe. Enjoy! And don't miss Reclaiming Mystique, coming soon.
One thumb up and one thumb down is how I would rate this book. I think my wishy-washiness stems from the fact that Bevan Greer could not decide what this book is.
Is it space opera? Definitely. There is extensive world-building with a colorful cast of characters on a grand adventure to save a world. There are encounters and action sequences throughout the star system engaging all kinds of characters: pirates, slavers, aliens, the scary horde, prostitutes, invisible animals, mystics, psionics, changlings, mixed breeds, humans....and I know I am forgetting some other creatures. But you get the point. I enjoyed the adventures. They were well written and very creative. There were just too many, with too many sci-fi and paranormal elements, resulting in a disjointed and ambling plot.
Is Fenturi Fate a romance? Yes. Sort of. For those looking for longing or angst in a building relationship, you won't find it here. Interactions between the heroine Dare and the hero Ren are actually extremely limited until 50% into the book. There is less emphasis on dialogue between Dare and Ren personally and more on them protecting Bylaran from the Ragil Horde. Most of their attraction seems to stem from Fenturi hormones rather than heartfelt regard and caring. Plus, there are two other romances introduced among four side characters and for a little while I thought we were headed for a romance triangle with Jace.
Is this book a mystery? Again, yes. There are three little mysteries buried within the plot, all of which have to do with seeking and identity. However, only one seemed all that compelling to the main plot.
Is this a character study? Yes. This is where Greer really excels. Ren and Dare are richly drawn and have full and interesting back stories. Their actions tie in well to their personalities. The side characters are numerous and each has compelling physical descriptions and quirks. Greer does not shirk on drawing appealing portraits of all the characters. Readers will like them and care what happens to them. What is a little strange is that the main protagonist is Ren's aged father for quite a bit of the book, even though he dies quite early in the narrative. Even more odd is that the approaching Horde, which is a major plot device, is less tangible as a villain than the relatively minor space pirates.
Will I read the next book (which is about Jace)? Probably yes if the sample is tightly written. This is because I like Greer's characters and story-telling. I want to learn more about Jace, Zebram, Roc, Shea, Phin, Castor, Mra and others.
I was impressed with this book. Having never deadbEat Greer I was a bit skeptical, however after the first couple of chapters I was sucked in. There were a few minor typos nothing major that would deter from the quality of the story line and I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series.
I rather liked this. Old plot (I could see the cowboys, Indians, and even Romeo and Juliet in the back ground), but really well written. I laughed and sighed, and even thought about tearing up at one point.
I was so enthralled with the story I could not set it down and lost sleep because of it. There are some grammatical errors and that is why I did not give it five stars.
It was a good story. The story building was decent and the plot was good, but the romance takes a back burner to the action. It was okay, I'm not sure I would read the second book. I was looking for more romance and less adventure.
Really entertaining. Good world building and character developing. Enjoyed the budding relationship between H & h. Definitely want to read more of this author's books.
This book is exciting and action packed from the beginning. If you like sci-fi with a bit of fantasy thrown in you will enjoy this book. I simply couldn't put this book down I had to read it all in one sitting!
space opera of the finest kind. sweeping saga of racial bigotry, torn families, mystical secrets, hidden weapons, mythical heroes and derring do. looking forward to the next in this series.
