Sterek Stiles can't remember what happened to rearrange the time-space continuum, or how he ended up being pulled into the past. All he knows is that he's there now, in 2003 Beacon Hills, with a teenage werewolf and a possibly-crazy veterinarian as his only allies. Word Count: 52,270 Complete
Epic Sterek-love. Seriously epic. <---quote could be considered spoilery.
I loved that within a few minutes of Stiles realizing he's somehow in 2003 Beacon Hills (instead of 2013) he knows he shouldn't be fucking around with past events. I get so annoyed by the characters in time-travel books/movies who've apparently never seen or read a time travel book/movie. Fuck around in the past, you may be fucking up the future. Dur. (Though Stiles does fuck around a teeny bit--but he tries not to. To the best of his abilities.)
There are some serious Stiles' Mommy feels in this one. Actually, there are just a lot feels in general. Over Derek, his family--even Erica.
I liked the conversations about the various time-travel theories. Did I understand them? No, not entirely. But I never do and I'm comfortable with that for the most part. Though I frequently question whether I'm not getting it or the author doesn't get it so, of course I don't get it. However, the way the author worked in String Theory was well-done. Apparently she based it on Sara's Girl's Foundation series (Reparations).
And did I mention the epic Sterek-love? (Though as a general warning for those of you who aren't partial to Teen Derek--Adult Derek doesn't make an appearance until the last 20%.)
I have a few issues.
Here, have a gif:
Oh, yes, there's a short sequel/cut scene here.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Time travel stories always leave me kind of confused and with a bunch of questions.
I know you shouldn't mess around in the past cuz bad shit might happen in the future. Look at what happens in The Butterfly Effect or in Frequency. But would I be able to resist not trying to prevent some horrible event from happening if I had the opportunity? Sometimes fucking around with the past works out just fine, like at the end of Frequency. It also worked out great for Marty in Back to the Future and Sandra and Keanu in The Lake House, the X-Men in Days of Future Past. Which fictional people am I supposed to believe?
Then there's all the questions. The ending of Frequency still makes no freakin' sense to me. Why aren't Marty's parents freaking out that their son looks exactly like that Calvin Klein kid they knew in high school? Doesn't Sandra get tired of jerking that boyfriend of hers around? Wait, if Sandra wrote that letter that prevents that thing from happening doesn't that mean other stuff didn't happen so she wouldn't have to write the letter so she wouldn't be at the la...oh my god my brain hurts. And how the hell is it possible for Superman to turn back time by reversing the rotation of the Earth? Isn't that like driving in reverse to turn back your odometer? (You were probably expecting an X-Men question here but I'm all good with that one. The Superman thing drives me nuts, though.)
I usually start asking my husband these questions either during a movie or right after and I usually get some variation of the same answer: It doesn't matter, OTILA. It's a fucking movie. Just enjoy it.
When Stiles asks Derek his own question trying to make sense of it all Derek's response is, "Does it matter?"
I'm taking the hubby's and Derek's advice. It doesn't matter that I was completely lost when Deaton was explaining the string theory even though I read that part twice.
It doesn't matter that I have all kinds of questions about what Stiles did or didn't do in the past.
It doesn't matter that there was no explanation about how this didn't affect the future at all (really?) or how Derek dealt with his changed perception for all those years.
It doesn't matter because I enjoyed this story immensely. Rosa and Jen are right. This is about Stiles' and Derek's "Epic Love." Love that defies all laws of time and space and logic. I loved it.
In essence this is a time travel story as Stiles mysteriously awakens 10 years in the past and knows, as well as you and I, that the space/time continuum is not something to be messed with lightly. Inadvertently - definitely inevitably - he is discovered by Derek and the connection is immediate. Will the consequences be dire; is there a chance to change the future?
Something to note is that present day Stiles and Derek are not in a romantic relationship; their friendship just starting to really solidify right before Stiles is wrenched away. What makes this absolutely amazing is all the feels. There is a roller coaster of emotions going on here as Stiles confronts his past and witnesses first hand Derek's life before Kate and the havoc she wrecked on the Hales.
On a side note we know what happened to Derek. We know what he lost. We know how that changed him. This peek at him and his life before the tragedy makes that loss so much more painful, more tragic - visceral in the reality that all he loved was taken away from him in such a cruel manner. It pretty much nails with precision, makes one fully aware in understanding Derek's future grief and resulting pathos, how and why he is who he is.
So yes, this is raw with emotion. The intricacies of the plot are amazingly smart. The reveal in the resolution once Stiles returns home is absolutely ingenious. The connection between these two transcends time, death, and apparently reality and logical thought. If you want epic romance, an explanation of their otherworldly connection or a definition of their love, then this profound story, to me, explains its amazing existence.
Their love was "deeper, stronger, made of something so thick that even the universe itself couldn't break it."
This is not the carefree Stiles we all know and love. But it is still Stiles and I loved him in this book! It was dark, but not too dark. It all felt very realistic. No drama just because of the drama. There are no miscommunications or stupid things happening between Stiles and Derek. There is simply love, and a deep longing for each other. Just how I like it.
Stiles suddenly finds himself in the Beacon Hills of 10 years ago. He meets 17 year old Derek and his family there.
Stiles doesn’t know if he will ever return to his own time and because he knows bad things will happen, he is pretty stressed out. I loved the feeling of impending doom.
This book was just so full of emotion.
My heart broke for Stiles when kept going to the library every Saturday to hear his mother read to the children there.
And the way Stiles and past Derek fell in love, their deep connection, in the past and in the present, simply beautiful.
And there was enough Sterek sex to keep us entertained in that area. But my favorite part was the beautiful scene at the end with Stiles and present day Derek. It wasn’t just sex, it was a declaration of pure love.

This was just fabulous, they may cause my brain to melt but I freaking LOVE time travel fics. They are the absolute best and this is a most excellent one. Stiles finds himself hurtled from 2013 to 2003. Pre his mom dying, pre Hale fire, pre Derek angst. He can't mess with the humans, because they are fragile and who knows what introducing himself to his mom will do the future, but supernaturals are okay because well they are supernatural. Queue fun, sweet and heartbreaking times.
I had a tiny issue at the end but I'm gonna just pretend the thing that wasn't mentioned is just automatically implied.
I wanted to like it much more, I swear. But it turns out I don't really like time travel. I found out that I do like time travel later on. This fic just didn't work for me.
It didn't break my heart nor didn't make me feel happy. It left me feeling neutral. *whispers* And I have problems with reviewing stuff like that. *ahem*
I guess that I didn't love it, because I just re-watched the season 3B of TW, which I love so much and I'm already emotionally wrung out.
Just go read this or this review, if you want some serious thoughts about this fic.
I'll admit I'm a bit of a sucker for time travel stories, which is a weird thing for me because I'm also brutally logical in my thinking. I often rip into all possible plot holes and continuity errors that so often occur in these sorts of stories, but honestly, I have very few issues with the way this one was handled. In fact, it may be one of the best time travel stories I've ever encountered, period.
You know what else was awesome -- the feels. There were some serious emotions swimming around in this fic. It's the first time I've truly been emotionally affected by the whole Hale fire situation, and don't even get me started on Stiles' library visits - you know what I'm talking about!! *cries a bucket of tears*
"Everyone gets a better look at what's inside when they take the time to scratch at the surface."
2013 - The pack is fighting the fae. Stiles sustains what could very well be a fatal wound, he is scared he is dying ... but suddenly he wakes up in Beacon Hills in 2003. And so it begins ...
2003 - Stiles is his 17 year old self. He knows where he is, but knows the year isn't right and that somehow he has fallen through time. His mother is still alive and he sees himself as a child. He is smart enough to be worried about the butterfly effect, so he steers clear of his own family (as painful as that is) and somehow winds up on the Hale property, where he of course runs into Derek. Since he doesn't have a lot of options and Derek seems accepting of him, he begins staying with the Hale family - kind of under this suspicious story that no one believes anyway, but whatever. A romance of sorts (at least a horny teenage boy sexy time relationship) forms between he and Derek while he is trying to figure out how to get back to 2013.
There is a lot of very intriguing intellectual and moral concepts put forth in this fic. Stiles knows what happens, obviously. The Hale family is painted as a rather "granola-y", homeschooling, hippie-ish, chill family and Stiles likes them - even Peter isn't bad, he's happy. And he knows that they will die. Does he take action to prevent this? Would it matter even if he did - like if he kills Kate, what if someone else still carries out Kate's plan? Was she just a tool and thereby replaceable? What if the universe has a main plan and certain events have to happen no matter what and even if you try and change them, elements fall into place to make them happen anyways. Or what if he kills Kate and is successful and the Hales live - how does that effect the future forwards? Must certain things happen that make you who you are and are irrevocable on any kind of fated level?
2003 Derek is happy and Stiles loves him, but he also realizes he loves 2013 Derek - intrinsically are they the same person? By having an affair with 2003 Derek does he betray the trust of 2013 Derek? At the core - who are you? Is your soul unwavering and you are who you were always meant to be or are you a succession of events that happen to you by the universe - whatever your part in said events is?
Lots to think about in this one ... but not executed to the best of abilities. This author has great ideas and is really thinking here on a number of different planes on how fate verse free will interlock and the moral questions time travelling would bring. But there was a lot of domesticity in this that made the fic move slow and had me scanning at times. I really enjoyed Stiles' love with 2003 Derek, but his love with 2013 Derek was almost too polished, not so much sweet, but maybe too easy? I really liked reading the scenes with 2003 Derek, seeing him happy.
Overall this is a very interesting read that just needs to be reworked some.
"Sometimes, you will never know the true value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.
Time travel stories always make me crazy. You know, because of all the paradoxes. Ugh. Don't even get me started on the Terminator series.
ANYWAY.
Is this worth reading? Maybe, sure. It is a bit slow at times, but it's got a good story for the most part. The interaction of Stiles with the Hales is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Also, seeing Stiles watch his mother from afar, was also really sad.
It's the whole "time travel to the past but don't tell anyone about what's going to happen as it will affect the future" bullshit that really started to chap my ass.
Why bullshit, you ask? There were two major things Stiles does that DIRECTLY affects the future:
Absolutely LOVED it. My fave Sterek fics are ones where Stiles time travels. And this one is probably my new favorite. After being in a bit of Sterek slump, this was just what I was looking for. Stiles ends up 10 years in the past (2003 Beacon Hills) and has no idea how he got there. 17 year old Derek finds him cold & alone in the woods. And it's a wonderful feels fest from there. In one word, it was EPIC. I would love to see the story from 2013 Derek's POV.
A slow build Stiles-in-the-past connecting with same-aged Derek before Kate. It's more rambly than high actioned suspense, and sad, so sad. Think about 17 yr old Stiles seeing his mother, seeing Derek's family, but also missing his dad, and wondering about the gang.
It's all plausible (sort of), and doesn't try to completely re-write the events.
There wasn't as much despair as I had prepared for. There was the clever solution for the 10 year jump. There are the Hales and a happy Derek who will learn to smile again. Good enough for me for 3 stars.
This was one of the better time travel fics I've read. So often things aren't explained properly or I don't feel the way they are ended/wrapped up works completely, but I liked the way this was done. I can't say too much on it without spoilers, but I felt satisfied with the way everyone remembered things, based on different times periods, by the time the fic ends.
The geeky part of me enjoyed the discussions with Deaton about the various time travel theories - although they were also a bit confusing!
I liked the flashbacks (or maybe flashforwards?) to things that had happened between future Derek and Stiles, while Stiles was back in the past - Stiles remembered things that he then realised in hindsight maybe meant more then he knew at the time and indicated that derek felt something for him too. I think the idea was that going back in time and spending time with everyone there gave him a greater appreciation for who Derek is - maybe allowed him to properly know him in a way he wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
I was a bit confused with ages of people here, as Derek and Stiles were both around 17 for the majority of the fic, but I had thought that the hale fire happened when Derek was younger than this...but once ages and things were stated within the fic, it all made sense. And on that note, I think around 80% of the fic is about stiles stuck in the past with past Derek when they are both teenagers, so if you are not keen on Derek being a teenager, then this might not be for you. Current/future Stiles & Derek get some nice interaction though for the remaining part of the fic at the end.
Overall, an enjoyable time travel fic that was quite emotional at times and had some kinda hot scenes in there too.
Time Travel but not a fix it... interesting idea that what's going to happen is gonna happen no matter what you do.
When Stiles returns... I guess the jump from past Derek to now Derek makes it hard for me to feel the relationship between them. Current Derek doesn't actually change personalities so they don't have the same dynamic established in the past.
This was a good story. This is a Sterek fanfiction story. For those of you that don't know...Sterek fanfic is based off 2 male characters, Stiles and Derek, from the TV show Teen Wolf. In the show they're both heterosexual but some viewers have fantasized about them together in a m/m relationship and thus Sterek was born. This story was based around the TV show but with some differences. Stiles and Derek are allies in the fights against the paranormal in Beacon Hills and they've also become friends...kind of. Lets just say that they get along about as well as can be expected. There's a sexual attraction that's between them but Derek is very clear (in an unspoken way) that it will never go anywhere and Stiles is (mostly) content not to push things.
When the story begins, Stiles is helping with a supernatural fight again and unexpectedly finds himself waking up in the woods, alone. He can't figure out why Scott, Derek and Issac would have left him laying there unconscious but he gets going and heads home...only to see his dad and mom and a 7 year old him coming out of the house. He quickly realizes he's not in his own time. He goes back out to the woods to try to find some clues as to what happened and meets up with a 17 year old Derek in the woods. They make friends and Stiles ends up staying with Derek and his family (for the most part) while he's in town. Stiles also gets in touch with Deaton to get help trying to return to his own time but since they don't know how he got there, finding a return will be difficult. Stiles ends up being in the past for months and during this time, he and the younger Derek discover their attraction for each other and end up exploring it (although Stiles is nervous about the ramifications of his actions in the future). There's lots of drama to deal with but the story does end with a HEA for Derek and Stiles.
I found this story to be very enjoyable. It was an interesting story with definite touching moments (have a tissue handy) and I really liked the part of the story having to do with the emotions and the personal interactions between the characters. Outside of that though, there was a major amount of suspending of disbelief. I mean I realize that time travel and all can be convoluted but the way things worked and got explained just didn't make complete sense to me. Although that did take the rating from 4 stars to 3, it was still a good story with some very good feels. <3
Yeah, as far as I am concerned the theory in my original review is the one I am sticking with. Although…
Reading this for the second time gave me a whole new outlook on what I already considered Epic Sterek-love. This time I really got to think about the strength of their love and what it was able to do. Holy Moly. I also really paid attention to the Sheriff’s take on that love. I love when he is accepting but never has he been as accepting as he is in this book. Getting to read it again gave that part of the story so much more feeling for me.
I loved it all over again. Seriously.
Merged review:
I think this is one of the best Sterek fanfics I have ever read.
So, time travel. Um, no. If you want to confuse me and leave with nothing but “what if?” or “did this happen or not happen?” you just need to get me to read about time travel. But, after two days of thought and a lot of skimming back over the book, I think I kinda get it or at least have my own theory. My theory makes my heart happy so I am going to run with it. It’s fanfiction, I can do whatever I want.
I don’t want to give too much away because I feel like this book needs to be read and each reader should have their own interpretation, but to quote Rosa, this was Epic Sterek-love.
You can read her review here. Her review makes me want to talk for days.
I think that this was a beautiful way to tell the story of the love between these two boys. It showed how timeless it is and that no matter what or where there love lives, happens and they always fall.
I do want to mention that this story isn’t rainbows and glitter. It is quite sad and it made me cry, more than once. But overall it was a story about strength, learning, sacrifice and love.
Here is my theory:
I have a lot more theories about shit. There is so much to talk about with this one. So much brain work! There is a podfic and I am going to listen to it, I am sure it will just give me more to talk about.
