So this series started a little slowly, there was a historical episode with Liv and the Doctor in London just after WWI. I must admit I wouldn't have thought Liv was the ideal choice for a love story among the companions, she's usually so much more involved than that, and it felt a bit odd having Kitty for no other reason than coincidence. In episode 2 things started to pick up a bit with a trip to an alternate Paris and the arrival of the daleks, but it still felt a bit lacking. Three was all about the Master, the Master and the Daleks working together, what could possibly go wrong? Molly returned but as a much older Molly, I will admit it took me awhile to get used to the re-casting. She just seemed much more of a frumpy Irish woman than the amazing Molly, though once she settled in she was great. I loved the whole "New Skaro" concept. The last episode was the best and on par with the previous series. Such an emotional ending to the story. Liv, Molly, and the new woman character shone brilliantly! It was a perfect ending for this 8th Doctor arc. Now I want to go back and listen to them all again.

The finale to the Dark Eyes series is a bit of a mixed bag. It opens strong with a quieter story ("A Life in the Day") that goes a long way toward further developing the character of Liv Chenka, and the visit to Paris ("The Monster of Montmartre") is also well done. But the final two stories end up with a bit too much technobabble for me. These are saved, however, by Alex Macqueen's always-excellent performance as the Master.

"Eye of Darkness" brings in elements from all over the Dark Eyes series and if things aren't wrapped up entirely neatly, we have good closure.

For me, the Dark Eyes 2 set remains the high point of the series, being four mostly standalone stories that are ultimately tied together, but work on their own as well. (Dark Eyes 1 was essentially a four-hour story, and works on its own without the sequels, but was a bit too much technobabble at the end as well.)

Of course, by this time I'm invested enough in the series that this fall's "Doom Coalition" will be a must-buy, but I hope that we'll get more standalone stories with less of the technobabble, because I swear if I hear the words "retrogenitor particles" once more, I will destroy something.

A Life in the Day:
7/10
Verdict: Recommended

Fun story with some good emotional moments. Pretty clear twist but still done well. The ending seemed a bit rushed and the threat of the episode were a bit naff, but that's not really where the focus of the story lies.

The Monster of Montmarte:
7/10
Verdict: Recommended

Really fun story with a great setting, on going mystery and eventual threat. The side characters are great, and except for some slightly dodgy voice acting from Nicholas Briggs, pretty perfect in what it's doing.

Master of the Daleks:
7/10
Verdict: Recommended

Pretty slow at the start but once it gets going it's pretty fun, though it does feel distinctly like someone playing with action figures. The Master is at his best so far here, I think he has a really nice malice and charisma that works really well when bouncing off the daleks and Liv.

Eye of Darkness:
6/10
Verdict: Recommended

It was alright, not as bad as the stories in Dark Eyes 3 but of the same style, very exposition heavy and very slow at times, that sort of thing. There was a good sendoff for a certain character, and I'm glad that the story is wrapped up neatly, which is a miracle given how all over the place the plot has been over the Dark Eyes boxsets.

4.1 A Life In The Day by John Dorney

I really enjoyed this story. I love how it gave more characterisation to Liv, which I’ve wanted for ages, and gave more information and characterisation to Kitty, who we first met in Dark Eyes 1.

Plot wise, it was engaging and interesting, but easy to guess. The ending felt a little rushed, but I still enjoyed it.

Rating - 4* / 5*

4.2 The Monster of Montmarte by Matt Fitton

When this started, I honestly thought it was going to be a Moulin Rouge rip off and I just wanted to groan with frustration.

But it was so good! The plot was decent, and after the first 10 minutes or so, decently paced and enjoyable. I loved the interactions between the Doctor and Liv, and I’m just starting to love Liv.

I loved the cliffhanger ending, I thought it was great.

Rating - 5* / 5*

4.3 Master of the Daleks by John Dorney

Seriously, another Eighth Doctor amnesia story. I can’t stand this trope, it’s so frustrating.

Aside from that, he is barely in this story until about ten/fifteen minutes before the end because he’s asleep. When he is awake at the end, he was decent, and actually funny. The bit about escaping the room through the door and waking up surrounded by Daleks made me laugh.

I did actually really like the Master in this one. I think MacQueen makes a decent Master, and he makes him quite theatrical, which comes across quite well over the audio.

I did like Liv and Molly in this one, I love how Liv just deals with everything that happens with dry wit and sarcasm. I was also quite happy that Molly has stopped referring to the TARDIS as a “tardy box” which actually drove me insane. The recasting of her voice actress also makes sense in the context of the story, but it makes me curious what the plot was going to be before her voice actress became unavailable.

Aside from the great characters, the plot was pretty boring. Honestly, this story just feels like a major set up for the final story in the boxset. Seriously, the Doctor sleeps for three quarters while the Master and the Daleks and the Sontarans chat - and the Sontarans feel a bit wasted in this story, like they could have been replaced with humans and the story wouldn’t have changed.

Rating - 3* / 5*

4.4 Eye of Darkness by Matt Fitton

Okay, this was a fantastic end to Dark Eyes. I love how it tied up the plot from Dark Eyes 1 onwards, even though some of the stories in Dark Eyes felt really disparate and a little pointless.

Through these few boxsets, I've grown to love Liv. I think she's amazing, and I love the interactions between her and the Doctor, and the conversations at the end of this story about Molly and life, oh, it was beautiful.

The final part of the Dark Eyes quartet is fully up to the standard set by the prior parts. Once again, although packaged as four stories (with two writers alternating between them) it's really a single one, jumping about in time and space. The task for the writers here was to tie up all the plots and loose ends of the first three instalments, bringing back the Master, the Daleks, the Eminence, and more to bring everything full circle. As will be apparent from the cover, there are Sontarans in it, too, here playing a somewhat different role than they normally do.

While the Daleks are the main threat - as they were in the original instalment - it's really Alex MacQueen's Master who shines, dominating his portion of the story and getting some fantastic lines. Nicola Walker is also impressive as companion Liv Chenka, making her character likeable and sympathetic, while remaining distinct from prior TV companions.

Time travel and its repercussions are integral to the plot, something that's to be expected after the earlier offerings in the series. In this respect, the first segment is particularly interesting, taking a common sci-fi plot device and examining it from an entirely different perspective. There are also some fun ideas in here (particularly what one of the villains has done with the Moulin Rouge), and a good mix of different tones from the somewhat leisurely beginning to the dramatic and emotional conclusion, which is much stronger on the action.

This entire series has been consistently good, with perhaps its only real flaw being the sidelining of Molly after the first couple of releases. One suspects that might have had something to do with the availability of Ruth Bradley, and the need to set up Liv as a longer-term replacement once it became clear that Dark Eyes was going to be more than a one-off, but her introduction was so good that her reduction to background plot device is inevitably disappointing.

That aside, this finale brings together all the elements that made the earlier parts successful and provides a fitting conclusion to a plot arc and series that's longer than most of the TV show's seasons.

Sigh... I almost hate to say this, given that Dark Eyes started out so well. And even this set had some good moments - "A Life in the Day" was lovely and wonderful. And I loved the Moulin Rouge! references in "The Monster of Monmartre." But the ending was just... I dunno. Muddled, is the best way I can describe it. And it's not even the fault of the writers. Doctor Who has this funny thing where you think that throwing in the Daleks and the Master and the Sontarans and the kitchen sink together and it's just going to be Awesome to the power of Amazing. Sadly, this is not always the case and the ending of this set suffers for it.

Like, who is the villain, who is just stuck there, who is the victim, who are we supposed to cheer for, why doesn't the Doctor just throw up his hands and walk away from this mess and let all his adversaries knock each other out? And why let the Eminence get stuck in the muddle too? I was confused as to what was happening - like, how did Molly end up... wherever she ended up (see? I can't even remember where they were and why). Who was what Dalek and what was the Master up to, really?

(Then again, when has a Master plot ever been coherent and reasonable? I suppose in that way, Dark Eyes 4 is being true to the character.)

I may try to re-listen to this series at some point in the future and I might revise my opinion. But for right now, I have no idea what the hell happened. The sad thing is that I've already started the next set - Doom Coalition - and I'm able to follow it so much more than I could follow this mess. I have high hopes there that I'm praying will not be dashed. But I'll save that for another review.

This is the final chapter of the Dark eyes series starring staring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and collects 4 interconnected episodes that create and ending to a series that changed which pushed this Doctor‘s story onwards in new and exiting ways.

Episodes two and four are written by Matt Fitton who and one and three are written by John Dorney, who had not written for McGann's Doctor prior to this set unlike Matt Fitton who wrote the latter two episodes of Dark Eyes 2 and all of Dark Eyes 3. These two writers seem to work well together as the four episodes flow into one another creating a cohesive and dramatic forth and final chapter which includes charters from the entire sixteen part saga, such as the Dalek Time Controller and Alex Macqueen's incarnation of the Master amongst others. The Sontarans are also added into the mix in episode three “Master of the Daleks”, arguably the most dramatic and eventful of the set but it is hard to tell as each episode is full of drama and tension as the series comes to a close.

This set provides an exiting and at times emotional ending and is a must for fans of the series.

A Life in the Day: 5 stars
The Monster of Monmartre: 4.5 stars
Master of the Daleks: 4 stars
Eye of the Daleks: 5 stars

A brilliant conclusion to a brilliant series! Even the weakest of the 4 stories in this volume was still a great story, and none of them went below 4 stars, which is quite an achievement in my book. Quite possibly the only thing I could ask for was for Molly to have been a bit more involved throughout the volume, instead of only popping up in the last 2 stories to save the day. Other than that, the Dark Eyes series remains one of the best Eighth Doctor stories I've yet listened to from Big Finish (and that's saying something, considering how much I loved the Lucie Miller era).

Doesn't reach the heights of Dark Eyes 1 for me, in particular, but still an excellent set of dramas. I stated in my reviews for the first two, A Life in the Day and The Monster of Montmartre that I seemingly enjoyed the Doctor and Liv sightseeing in the different locals rather then the actual plots of the stories themselves, but that's simply due to my love for the characters and want to see them not go through traumatising events every week.

A good conclusion to the story but it has some flaws. Episode 1 doesn't feel as though it should really be part of this set and Episode 2 and 4 have some slower and less engaging moments. However, overall I was satisfied by this and Dark Eyes despite the imperfections. A good boxset and story and the Dalek Time Controller, The Doctor, The Master along with Liv and other characters make this story work as well as it does.

And so it ends. The first two audiobooks in this set were excellent and allowed Liv to really shine. The 3rd audiobook was... not great. I worried about how this would affect the climax, but I'm happy to say that I was most impressed with the 4th (especially since it made me cry while I was putting out Halloween decorations!). Molly wasn't always utilised properly, but this time she was magnificent.

Ultimately, this is the strongest of the four Dark Eyes box sets. It is well written, well directed, and well acted and it brings the entire series to its natural conclusion in a way that feels both dramatically and emotionally earned. The one problem I have with the series as a whole is the way Molly’s been written and used. She never really got the chance to be a true companion. She’s always been a plot device necessary to the villain’s ultimate plans, and because of that, we’ve never really been able to get much true character development from her. I understand that the constraints of the story required this to be the case, but I really loved Molly as a character and I just hate that she never really got the chance to shine on her own. That being said, she was still amazing, and I still adored the Dark Eyes series. I’m excited to see where the Doctor and Liv go in the Doom Coalition series, Big Finish’s next series of box sets from the Eighth Doctor. I’ll be starting and reviewing those soon!

It’s funny that the first story is titled A Life in the Day, given that I listened on Life Day, as Star Wars would put it. The time loop in that story was actually interesting to take in. I didn’t expect to see Molly come back in this boxset, but the way that they did it and what ended up happening with her at the end left a huge impression. This box set’s existence was justified.

All is well that ends well.
What a smashing final part of the Dark Eyes tetralogy!
My favourite stories were A Life in the Day (a bit heartbreaking) & Master of the Daleks (because of the humour, actually! The writing itself is good, but the interaction between Nicola Walker's Liv & Alex Macqueen's Master makes it absolutely priceless).
Fun, interesting, uncluttered - despite the many strands of the narrative. Well done!

Another series where the Daleks are the main villain! I think it's so unfair to the Eighth Doctor that he only gets the Daleks and the Master as villains. It's awfully repetitive. That being said, this series ended very well; Molly's sacrifice was extremely sad, but also necessary. The chat between the Eighth Doctor and Liv in the final scene was very well written. I look forward to further adventures with these two.

The Doctor and Liv come back to Earth and come across problems that turn out to be from the Daleks but they seem to be controlled but by whom. When the Master shows up is when things get interesting and they of course lead to Molly O'Sullivan. Can the Doctor fix what the Master and Daleks are trying to destroy.

A bit uneven. The characterization of the Doctor felt very off in the first section. If I were Kitty I would have unceremoniously thrown him out on his ear.

However, there were some really poignant parts. Unexpectedly in the end of section 1. Also a powerful soliloquy by Molly the final section.

This was fine. Just fine. But I am really tired of the timey wimey storyline of “there is a mysterious event and/or monster, let’s go check it out, oh no, my intervention caused the event/monster to be created in the first place!”
