Flawlessly Executed

Rate this book
When a mysterious young woman from his past shows up at the beginning of the school year, old memories are stirred up for Lieutenant Ben Keegan, which only serves to create tension in his marriage. Meanwhile, Lara is working overtime trying to manage an enormous fortune and thriving architectural firm, while dealing with feelings of loss for her former mentor, Eliot Stone. Lara leans on her good friend, Hawk, for support and he’s always there to help her. Flawlessly Executed has moments of grief, passion, rage, and frustration, and some wonderful moments of intense love. As in real life, there seems to be a force at work that conspires to pull Ben and Lara apart. The question is, will their love endure? A thriller and romance, Flawlessly Executed, Book 3 in the Dark Horse Guardians Series, takes the reader back to the Middle East with Lieutenant Ben Keegan and his team for the biggest hit since Bin Laden. There are moments that are chillingly realistic. Will he return from the mission unchanged or will this be his last one?

Ava Armstrong, new romance and thriller author, lives in a waterfront compound in an undisclosed location in New England, off the grid, with a military-grade security system and six English Bull Terriers.

The highlight of her eight years in college was driving at least one history professor to leave the state (she's been known to sit in the front of the class and challenge liberal professors). She graduated cum laude from a well-known private New England college with degrees in History, English, Business Administration, and Economics. (Note: the professor that gave her a D in Micro-Economics is no longer teaching).

During those college years, she found a brief career in modeling but became much more interested in photography and writing. After a decade-long career in corporate America with a four-billion dollar company, Armstrong focused on her true love: writing literature that could be read by the average human being.

She lives with her husband who resembles a bodyguard, and sleeps with a loaded S&W revolver. She has one child, whom she loves, and her collection of firearms, which she loves slightly less, with an especially warm affection for Glocks.

Her favorite things are the smell of cordite at the shooting range, the motor oil that drips from vintage 1940's Indian motorcycles, and the smell of sandalwood soap. You'd have to read her novels to understand that more deeply. Some people would describe her as a patriot, but she would describe herself as a Constitutionalist and a renegade.

She is currently hard at work on her next novel.

For such an interesting plot it was sad that parts of it were so unbelievable that I read it with my mouth open.I would have scored it a happy 5 if the lead male had not irritated the s**t out me.

How can I believe that this alpha badass man that leads a group of dangerous individuals that hunt deadly criminals around the globe is almost blind sighted & manipulated by an old flame were it not for his long suffering wife who is the only sane adult in this entire book.

Does Ben have a split personality? On one hand he is a gullible mild mannered weak professor on the verge of being easily led astray & on the other hand a take charge wicked man of action...

And his continuous usage of 'I'm a happily married man' when in the presence of danger was laughable.I would advise him to grow a pair man & kick the cat but no this is what Ben allows after numerous encounters with the femme fatale & countless warnings whether verbal or non-verbal from his wife:

Abby was now stroking Ben’s cheek, “I’m sorry, Ben. I’ll try to remain in the background out of sight. I don’t want any trouble.”

This is his reaction to any criticism regarding involvement with said siren when advised by his friend

“You’ve got to put a stop to whatever is going on here. This Abby has an agenda. Do you know what she’s been up to since you two last smooched in high school?”

Ben became animated, “No, I haven’t had any contact with her for thirteen years. What the hell are you doing here? Spying on me?”

“She’s up to something, Ben. Don’t trust her. Lara’s beside herself with worry.”

Ben listened intently to the details of Abby’s troubled history as Bettencourt spoke. At one point Ben wrinkled his brow, “How the hell does Lara know all of this?”

After viewing enough, Ben locked eyes with Bettencourt, “This is not good. Abby’s got some serious problems, but I’d say from reading this stuff and looking at the videos, the doctor has some issues himself.

From those two excerpts I got the following message:

1)his wife Lara should not poke her nose in his affairs.
2)he disregards any intel about psychotic Abby & focuses on the Doctor

Abby's manipulation to get Ben & her indirect involvement in Hawks death was never brought to the attention of the other characters was just another failure for me and when you add in Ben's constant & puzzling disappearance to go play Hero it's a wonder his wife is not locked up somewhere in a loony bin.

And finally does this man ever consult his wife before running off:

As he listened to Lara and William joking around in the kitchen, he heard Rusty and Lara’s mother arrive. He was already packing his gear.....

I loved parts of this book. Nicely written but the murder of one creepy character by Ben left me cold. Killing because you are at war is very different than murder for self righteousness. No one gets to do that. I would’ve preferred him bringing the bad guy back to justice with due process and all. Up to that point I liked Ben. Anyway, lovely writing style.

Fabulous

I've read all 3 books in the series and every time a new one comes out, I always say it can't be as good as the one before it. But it is. I have loved all 3 books and look forward to the next one!

Only reason there are not 5 stars is there's a lot of death in this book and not as much loving.
