Discover the Noble Teachings of Zen to Bring Peace & Happiness to Your Everyday Life! Dear Friends, Contrary to popular belief, Zen is not a discipline reserved for monks practicing Kung Fu. Although there is some truth to this idea, Zen is a practice that is applicable, useful and pragmatic for anyone to study regardless of what religion you follow (or don’t follow). Zen is the practice of studying your subconscious and seeing your true nature. The purpose of this work is to show you how to apply and utilize the teachings and essence of Zen in everyday life in the Western society. I’m not really an “absolute truth seeker” unworldly type of person - I just believe in practical plans and blueprints that actually help in living a better life. Of course I will tell you about the origin of Zen and the traditional ways of practicing it, but I will also show you my side of things, my personal point of view and translation of many Zen truths into a more “contemporary” and practical language. It is a “modern Zen lifestyle” type of book. I invite you to take this journey into the peaceful world of Zen Buddhism with me today! In This Book You Will Read • Where Did Zen Come From? - A short history and explanation of Zen • What Does Zen Teach? - The major teachings and precepts of Zen • Various Zen meditation techniques that are applicable and practical for everyone! • The benefits of a Zen lifestyle • What Zen Buddhism is NOT? • How to slow down and start enjoying your life • How to accept everything and lose nothing • Why being alone can be beneficial • Why pleasure is NOT happiness • Six Ways to Practically Let Go • How to de-clutter your life and live simply • "Mindfulness on Steroids" • How to Take Care of your Awareness and Focus • Where to start and how to practice Zen as a regular person • And many other interesting concepts... By 50% through the book, it felt as though this became the authors rant and rave against all things of the western culture and how mind-rotting technology and society is. At one point referring to men as spoiled kids and women as dizzy cows and fake plastic dolls then claiming this all as his personal point of view. And that is the point that I stopped reading. While yes there is a truth to the statements and mind rotting society- I didn't download this book to read more about it, let alone the personal opinion of the author. Sorry. It's a bit hypocritical against the Ten Grave Concepts- 6 and 7.
I do like books about Zen and i've read a great many throughout my life: so where does this one stack up?
I really enjoyed it. Ian has a very approachable style of writing and digs into all aspects of Zen, mostly for the beginning practitioner; but i would also suggest that this is a great book for the Zen curious who have no interest, whatsoever, in pursuing a practice; or for those who maybe just want to dabble a little and see if it's for them. And it's also a good book for those of us who practice alone, either due to where we live or other circumstances, but need a little support and/or guidance occasionally.
It's verily worth the 99p i paid in a Kindle sale.
My only criticism is that there's a fair few typos that a bit of mindfulness in the proof reading would have prevented which, to be honest, i found rather amusing considering the topic of this book.
Anyone who has been through outpatient cognitive therapy will have already been exposed to, and likely is following, what is in the book already. It focuses on "being here now"and "experiencing the moment" without focusing on the past, or the future.
I found it interesting that this was more of a review (though a much needed one) for me.
It would be 5 stars, but in this one, the author gets very redundant and goes off on tangents that I didn't feel helped at all. Otherwise, it was worth the read and I'm looking forward to more of his work on Meditation and Mindfulness.
To be honest, a lot said in this book I had read but this book is still very refreshing. I can feel Ian's enthusiasm for life, his energy and his desire to share his positive doing. This is beyond positive thinking. He actually said that just convincing yourselves things will always be ok is not ok. Realistic thinking is much better.
If you are in depression or find yourself in sad situation, this is the book for you. And why not embracing Zen lifestyle too? It's light, it's realistic and it's relaxing.
i have read a few other mindfulness/ self-help type of nonfiction books, but they are not my most-commonly read category. while this book was short and got right to the point with some of the subject matter, most of what it focused on are things i already know to do or at least try to so i do not feel like i gained a whole lot from reading it, but it was a quick easy read that also helped me complete my A-Z challenge since i needed a "Z" book.
Easy and enjoyable read. Liked Ian's insight into beginning on this journey . Relatable experiences throughout. Will definitely look for more of the author's work. And would recommend this book as a starter for anyone wishing to explore this area.
Now please excuse me. I have 15 minutes of decluttering to do...😊😇
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is perfect for beginners to meditation and I would therefore recommend it. As a meditation teacher I am always learning and reading books relating to the subject and this one is thoroughly enjoyable and easy to follow and read.
Loved this book. The way Ian has written this book made it so easy to follow. I found myself relating to so many things in the book. I know from experience that much of the advice given does actually work resulting in peace of mind. I look forward to putting into practice all the other suggestions I’ve yet to try. Thank you Ian.
A brief and reasonably priced primer to the core concepts and tools surrounding the realization of a zen mindset. Written in a very accessible manner, a bit waffley in parts (I felt the cartman inner voice reference a bit out of place :) ), perhaps a bit shallow in others (would have preferred a few more koan explorations, there's a goldmine there) but overall enjoyable read. Would buy again.
Author doesnt have any sense about what he is teaching. No techniques provided. If u want to read whole book in one day. See any monk. Book is all about how monk s live. Who dont have any requirement other than just closing eyes and meditate. This book is not useful at all.
Well written and stressed the important points. Very informative and practical application of ZEN in our troubled world we live thank you Ian! Hear from you again on your other books
This book was very informative, and broken down simply enough for a beginner to understand. I would definitely reccomend it for someone wanting to learn about and obtain a zen mindset.
A must read to anyone who wants to know more about living a Zen life. Easy to read and understand, other books have left me confused if I'm honest. Can't wait to put some of the things I've learnt into practice in my day to day life.
An easy to read introduction to the benefits of living in the moment. Interesting facts about the author’s life that I felt I could relate to & lots of practical advice on making changes to improve your happiness levels.
I bought this book coming out of recovery during the lockdown and it really helped me to begin to order my life in a way which is meaning full definitely recommend it
Loved this book, the author explains in many ways how to be more Zen, how to declutter our lives. I like how he puts it so simply. Definitely inspiring, made me smile, will definitely keep it as one of my favourites.
A book that can help you be ZEN. especially if you're not gonna take this as a new belief system, a new authority and just discover yourself with some good tips from Ian Tuhovsky.

Title: Zen: Beginner's Guide Author: Ian Tuhovsky Genre: Non Fiction, Spirituality, Self Help Overall Rating: 3.5 stars
I love self help books and spirituality books that promote inner peace, I love reading them, they actually do make me feel at peace whilst reading them. However, I never actually make any changes to my own life, but you know, good for them for being peaceful human beings. I enjoyed this book a lot due to the fact that it actually taught me a lot about Zen. I thought it was a religious thing, but it's really just a practise using different techniques while working and meditating. It's pretty cool actually.
if you are looking for a very easy and smooth introduction on zen and a very short explanation on where its come from and how to apply it to everyday life, you are going to love this. it was a while i was looking for a book that could walk me through the zen concept, without sounding too complicated. I found this a little bit late down the road, I had no idea what book to purchase to started getting books that happened to be complicated and not so easy-to-follow for someone who know nothing on the subject. so i've been a bit overwhelmed before with all the information and history -the kind that leaves you with basically nothing at the end- from other books, hence the appreciation for its basicness.
I personally found this book very inspiring. I was going through a difficult time in my life but while still reading it I realised there is another way out. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, looking for all sorts of things and reasons that might have triggered the state of mind I was in, I started learning how to let go of the past. How to let go of all the negativity that surrendered me and which I was dragging with myself. Through this book I discovered Zen, its basics, and I want to learn more. I want to, and I fact already started living Zen. It's great!
I really enjoyed this book. To me, The author's love of Zen came through brightly on every page. Ian writes in a contemporary style that I found easy to read. Highly recommended.
