An epic fantasy - sequel to JOURNEY OF SHADOWS. Three brothers. Three assassins. One destination.
In the dark forests of Westhealm lies the fabled Citadel of Lies.
Seth, Eni and Val Falkyn travel towards it - and towards an uncertain future.
Val must retrieve the Blood Stone, a powerful charm that can open a way to Moden, the magical underworld prison. He must free Floriana DeSanith - the only person who can train the brothers in the ways of the Sentorân.
Yet another powerful, artefact lies within the Citadel of Lies.
In the wrong hands, it could destroy the world.
Three assassins stalk the brothers. Seth, Eni and Val must die before they reach the Citadel.
Before they discover the truth.
The Citadel of Lies (Book Two of the Palâdnith Chronicles) is a tale of epic adventure, discovery and courage. It continues the quest of three men, and the destiny that awaits them.

The story of Seth, Eni and Val continues in this second novel in the Palâdnith Chronicles as they make their way into the dark forests of Westhealm where lies their destination: the Citadel of Lies. Their destiny lies within the Citadel, but with assassins stalking their every move, will they live long enough to accomplish their goals?
It is very obvious to me how much Sam Charlton loves and appreciated the genre of epic fantasy, because her writing is like an ode to the perfect fantasy novel. Much like the first book, this second installment is filled to the brim with magic, adventure, mystery, and danger. The story was very compelling, with so many twists and turns and an ending that I absolutely did not see coming! This book really just sucks you in right from the very beginning. It's beautifully crafted story just creeps into your soul and doesn't let go and it is definitely one of those books that stays with you long after you finish. And I cannot stress how much I enjoyed the writing style. You are given a lot of information but it is done in a way that doesn't in the least feel like info-dumping.
If you love epic fantasy, or just fantasy in general, I highly recommend this series. It is nothing short of fantastic.
A spectacular sequel of immeasurable searing vision and extraordinary originality
Book 2 in the Palâdnith Chronicles is an epic tale of discovery and outstanding courage that takes you on the most unforgettable adventure. Similarly to book 1 {Journey of shadows} I was swept away by the breathtakingly engaging plot and thrilling action, as the quest continues and destiny awaits Seth, Eni and Val. This scintillating series is very exciting {as an avid reader and fan of high/ epic fantasy fiction}, as once again I was blown-away by the well-written narrative of substance and scope. The richly evocative world containing a diverse range of fascinating characters and remarkable creatures is brilliantly realized on the page, and so plunging headfirst into a magical world of wonder I was able to lose track of time.
This epic adventure of discovery, fear, courage and bravery with a great destiny awaiting three men is a story of magnificence and awe-inspiring proportions. The magic of Paladnith (a land ruled by ruthless Lords) is captivating, and I could quite happily remain in this magical world. Spectacular landscapes take your breath away while exquisite descriptive passages paint a vivid picture of such a totally unique world.
Sam J Charlton has done it again with this convincing story of spectacular depth and intriguing, new ideas. Taken on an adventure of danger and exploration, I was once more magnetically pulled into an intense drama wherein a powerful charm (the blood stone) had to be retrieved. The Citadel of Lies is shrouded in mystery and wonder…and is a place that unlocks unexpected secrets that dazzle and delight! These books are short in length and so my only negative viewpoint is that the writing could be ‘fleshed out’ a bit more, so as to prevent the story from coming to a rather abrupt end.
*I would like to thank the author for providing me with an e-copy of her novel to read and review*
I am truly excited and enthused by this book. The baddie is not only wonderfully insane but she’s female! For her moments of time in this novel the Queen is wonderfully heinous. She’s made great sacrifices to get what she wants and, again in the spirit of the strong women, she may not be able to interact specifically but she’s directing traffic as much as she can. Charlton makes some unexpected moves in “Citadel of Lies” and does so quite convincingly. Charlton’s biography cites that she loves epic fantasy and she has clearly made a study of how to do it right.
As with the first novel Seth, Eni and Val live three separate storylines for the vast majority of the work. The shift in point of view could be quite jarring but Charlton manages a narrative with an organic flow. In some cases she breaks up action scenes but is able to return to them without leaving the reader behind.
If I had to nitpick something I didn’t like about “Citadel of Lies” it would be that there was a very slight inconsistency of dialogue. There are times when the language is very formal and then a character would lapse into a more comfortable (for the reader) patter. These shifts were rare enough that I feel this novel retains its five star status.
If you like epic fantasy you will love The Palâdnith Chronicles. I highly recommend this series.
"The Citadel of Lies" is an epic fantasy novel with lots of action, suspense, adventure, and some very likeable characters, just as the first book in the series. The end of the book was quite different from what I imagined, which is a good thing, since I don't like predictable stories. Indeed the plot had many twists, but not too many to seem forced or unlikely. Considering how much I cared for my favorite characters, I can say that the writer did a great job with character development. Wanting to find a fault, I could say that some facts seemed a bit unlikely or maybe not explained enough, although not so much to prevent me from appreciating the book; see examples in the spoiler.
At the end of the book, the story seems still far from its final phase; hopefully there will be many more books in this series. I'm already looking forward to read the next book, especially after reading its prologue, that was pretty amazing.
I received tjis book through the goodreads first reads program. This book is well written with a good plot and story line. However it was not my cup of tea.
