He died with a secret. Now someone’s killing to keep it hidden.

Trevor Bachman was a family man with a quiet life — until he turned up dead in the trunk of his own car. No enemies. No warning. But Sheriff Rita Jonas knows better. Trevor was sitting on something big — something Apex Global wanted kept quiet.

The only person who might know the truth is Frenchie, a mysterious recluse with his own hidden past. But earning his trust won’t be easy — especially as Rita faces a storm at home. Her father is dead. Her estranged mother is back. And the pregnancy she’s not ready to talk about is getting harder to hide.

As another body surfaces and pressure mounts, Rita must hold herself — and her department — together long enough to stop a killer who’s been hiding in plain sight.

Still Hidden is the fourth book in The Still County Thrillers by Lauren Street. Perfect for fans of sharp-edged suspense, buried truths, and sheriffs who won’t stay down.

Still Hidden by Lauren Street
Still County Thriller #4

~ Seamlessly follows book three with Rita having to deal with her father’s death, an unexpected health issue of her own, and two murders to solve ~ Excellent addition to the series ~ Recommend reading previous books before reading this one, if you can. ~

What I liked:
* Rita Jones: mid-thirties, left Wyoming fifteen years previously for NY, left NYPD to return as sheriff, complex, competent, bright, strong, contained, conflicted, not grieving traditionally, attracted to Cash though she left him behind – can there be a second chance for them?
* Cash Gabriel: Rita’s first love, mechanic, attractive, caring, calm, steady divorced, son of the local drug lord, cares deeply for Rita
* Rita’s team:
- Mary Lou: mans the front desk, multi-tasks, worth her weight in gold, mother-figure to Rita in the past, Jill of all trades
- Walter: on leave but memorable from previous books
- Jason: most recent hire, bright, professional, sensitive, put in charge of his first case in this book, level headed, brother so six sisters, I hope to see more of him as the series progresses
* Frenchie: eccentric, sees UFOs, father figure to Trevor – both Frenchie and Trevor sadly end up dead
* Irene: Frenchie’e neighbor, lives in a beautiful house, has a puzzle piece she shares that helps solve one murder
* Supporting characters: Tilda Keating/Forensics, Dylan Bruce/Chief Medical Examiner, Ruby Joe/The Shaft owner with secret exposed in this book, Otto/Rita’s father, Arbuckle/homeless tin collector improving his lot in life, and others from previous books
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The police procedural aspects and how Rita and Jason managed to follow the evidence to solve both murders
* Looking forward to the next book

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the way big business protects itself at the expense of employees
* Thinking about money and how it played a part in both murders
* Not being able to remember Angela and a few other pieces from past books in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Sterling & Stone for the ARC – This is my honest review

My Thoughts:
Still Hidden Follows Rita as she is dealing wiStith her father's death, filling his shoes as sheriff and solve a murder. Still Hidden is the fourth book in the Still County Thrillers.
This book is fast moving and full of twists and turns. I didn't realize that it was part of a series, that explains why I felt overwhelmed by some of the story and the amount of characters. I will be reading all of the books now in the Still County Thrillers Series.

Sheriff Rita Jonas is back in another mystery. A man, Trevor, is found in the trunk of his car and it looks like something has eaten away is lips and mouth. He had no enemies. Was a family man. Then Rita is called out to investigate a UFO sighting, she meets Frenchie. Frenchie lives out in the middle of nowhere and thinks spaceships have been following him. Rita goes to talk to Frenchie about Trevor, they found he has been beaten to death with a shovel. Now she’s got two murders, a funeral to plan, a pregnancy she has no idea what to do about, and the father she hasn’t yet told. Plus her mother has shown back up after disappearing years ago.

I could not put this down. Even though it is just Rita’s point of view. Many mistakes. No steam. Rita doesn’t think she’ll make a good mother so she’s not sure if she’ll keep the baby. I hope her and Cash work out their problems.

Lauren Street’s Still Hidden is a haunting, atmospheric novel that masterfully blends psychological suspense with deeply emotional undercurrents. The story follows a quiet unravelling of secrets, of relationships, and of identity, set against a backdrop that feels both intimate and unsettling.

Street’s prose is lyrical without being overindulgent, creating a slow-burn tension that creeps under your skin. The characters are vividly drawn, especially the narrator, whose inner world is rendered with raw vulnerability. As the narrative peels back layers of the past, it challenges readers to question what’s real and what’s been carefully buried.

What stands out most is the novel’s ability to evoke a sense of quiet dread not through gore or shocks, but through suggestion, absence, and emotional dissonance. The themes of memory, trauma, and self-protection are explored with nuance, and by the end, you’re left not with answers, but with a lingering echo that’s hard to shake.

Sheriff Rita Jonas is still reeling from her father's death and all that she is learning about him after he's gone. Rather than take bereavement leave, Rita wants to work. A new case catches her attention. A man who seems to be a good citizen ends up dead in the trunk of his car. Rita and her crew begin looking for clues as to what happened. When they learn that the deceased had terminal cancer, they can't determine how his death could have been suicide. Some of the answers seem to lie with a recluse who sees UFOs and does other strange things. He was a friend of the deceased, and his neighbor shares some important insights. But when this friend is murdered, Rita is left trying to make everything click. In the meantime, her personal life is taking some interesting turns. I can't wait for the next installment.

Too much going on confused the reader. Just when you get into the storyline something else happens nd it changes direction forgetting that storyline. Didn’t care for the ending.

Disappointing

The story was good but too many grammar and language errors made it more difficult to read and interrupted the storyline.

4.5 stars. This author really needs a beta reader who can catch auto-correct errors and continuity problems. There are several of those. Otherwise an interesting read.

This was good but exhausting and frustrating to read with so many typos and plot errors.

The main character in book 2 was Rita Marie Jonas. In book 4, she is now Rita Carolyn Jonas.

Her mother was "Carol" in the first three books but in book 4 she is "Carole"?

Lots of missing text and duplicate text throughout. I tried to send in as many corrections as I could but it became more like work than pleasure. I'm not sure if I'll read another one.

March 2026:
As frustrated as I was last year when I finished this book #4,, I skimmed through it so that I could read book #5. I really like the characters.in Still county and was happy that Rita wanted to give both Cash and motherhood a chance. Skimming and only reporting a few of the many errors made this time more bearable. I'm hoping that book #5 will allow me to enjoy the plot rather than being constantly stopped by a bunch of editing problem!
