Well, one of my problems has been solved, at least. The Naruse-leaving- the-team-to-practice-alone- because-he-didn’t-want-to-look-lame one. But that was so much easier to deal with than the Naruse-wants-me-to-say-Ilike-him or the Naruse-wants-me-to-be-his-girlfriend problem. And now we’re adding the Naruse-jealousy drama and the Hakamada-kun-not minding-his-own-business mess into the mix too?! Gimme a break already...

In real life I would probably want to throttle Naruse regularly, but in book form he is inexplicably charming-ish.

Reread 10/17/25 - really enjoyed this read.

Original read - (March 2024) I really liked this one!

Again a note for general dubious and nonconsensual tones in the book where Naruse just won't give up or take no for an answer. But I eat that stuff up in romance and am really liking this. We get a bit more background for Naruse and Yuki here and some sweet scenes.

Nope, still don't like Naruse Shou in this volume that much but that little conversation between Yuki and the new manager plus that scene from chapter 16 with Hakamada more than made up for it.

Another fun volume. I was a little surprised that Naruse was jealous and sulky through most of the volume, but I guess it makes sense that he’s feeling so insecure. He continues to flirt and confess his feelings to Yuki, and she continues internally vacillating.

Naruse(Cheeky Brat) is moving in for the kill.

I think it is safe to say he is OBSESSED with Yuki. It helps that he's hot but boy does he have a mean streak when it comes to her. With his old friend Hakamada in the picture slowly creeping in on her, Naruse gets really testy.

There is one scene that gave me chills though. There is a part where Naruse slams his fist against the side of Yuki's locker, with her head right there and when he removes his hand, it pops open and whacks her in the forehead and he just...stomps away. This is the first time I've had to say this about a manga, but that was way harsh and careless. On the upside, the heartrate---"badump badump!" Certainly increases with this volume. More feels, more kisses, more dirtiness and of course basketball!

I wish I hadn't finished this one so fast, now I must wait for vol. 4...

"Your crying face,
Your angry face,
Your face when you blush,
And your smile face,
I want them all for myself, I don't want any other guy to see them"

This volume is considered one of the best volumes so far, specially the replied he got from Yuki in the last chapter (Yes I'll think about you more from now on).

This manga really had a strong beginning. I'm surprised about Naruse, he has this bad guy image but his attitude is totally different from his looks and I like how he's being too honest about his feelings. I'm looking forward to see his smile tho~ and Yuki's too, cause they always seem to look mad but still cute.

Normally this is my kind of story, but I really don't like Naruse. At all. And that's a pretty fatal flaw in a main character. This kid is a prime example of an abuser if I ever saw one. I think I'm done with this series. Sad because I loved every scene he wasn't in.

I’ve read this a few years ago while it was coming out and forgot about it because the updates were taking forever. I enjoyed this volume but I forgot how slow the romance was. I want to skip to the part where they are secretly dating or when Yuki’s is in college & they have to deal with the long distance relationship.

I’ve seen some people mentioned the locker scene so I went back and Naruse didn’t push Yuki. She opened her locker and he slammed it shut. He got jealous released the locker which then resulted in the locker opening up and hitting her face and he walked away. I think it’s important to note that the panel specifically says release not shove or push. He released the locker because his hand was on the locker, in those panels he wasn’t touching her. Now I still think he was a jerk in that scene because he didn’t even bothered asking if she’s okay he just walked away.

I’ve also seen some people say they don’t like Naruse and just stop reading cause this series isn’t for you. Some people say “he crosses her boundaries” or “he acts bratty/annoying” as if the title isn’t called cheeky brat and Yuki herself calls him that in one of the panels.

The whole point of the story is Yuki likes Naruse but she pushes him away for several reasons. The first being she doesn’t take his feelings seriously. At first she thinks he was joking and it scares her because she genuinely likes him and even said it was it would hurt her if he was. Then, there’s the last chapter when Naruse said he thought he could wait until Yuki leaves the team for them to date because he knows she’s thinking she isn’t capable of being both in a relationship and manager of the basketball team. And Yuki thinking omg how does he know that. It because he understands her, what she is thinking and feeling. Finally, in a previous volume she states she was nervous about how the basketball team would view her if they found out she were dating someone on the team (Because she LIKES Naruse). It’s important to her that they view her highly and she’s afraid her dating Naruse would ruin that.

And again for the ones who don’t like his personality that’s okay that just means this manga just isn’t for you so stop reading and find a different series that you would enjoy.

I’ve been really enjoying this manga and it was a 5 star read so far, I particularly love the dynamic between Naruse and Yuki, it produces a lot of tension, butterflies, and often laughs.

However, this volume I had some issues with.

So far, Naruse has been very bold with showing Yuki how he feels towards her. But one particular scene in chapter 16 where he kisses her in the club room and she shoves him away, yet he continues to grab and kiss her made me a little uncomfy.

I don’t know what to think of the scene. On the one hand, I’m considering that maybe the author intended for the interaction to showcase their dynamic (him being infatuated with Yuki and her still denying to admit the same for him, not wanting Naruse to know she likes him), and that she does enjoy him kissing her, hence the blushing. But on the other hand, when a girl pushes you away. She telling you to stop.

There was also another scene at the lockers where he slammed his hand onto her locker from behind to get her attention bc he was upset and wanted to talk to her, buy when he let go it whacked her in the head and he just…walked away. That was kinda unnerving to me. These red flags just keep popping up and it’s scaring me!! 😭

I don’t know, I’m conflicted. I really want to enjoy this manga, the art style is beautiful and the plot is so promising, so I keep reminding myself that its just fiction; I know that these behaviours in real life are not to be tolerated, and in the case of a manga to take it more lightheadedly as it probably wasn’t meant to be viewed so deeply. But I still wish he respected her boundaries more and stuff.

I hope this isn’t a recurrence because it was becoming a new fave. :(

I binged the first 4 volumes online, so the different volumes blend together hence why I am computer and pasting my lump sum review. Overall, the manga is decent. For reason this is very nostalgic feeling for me. I don’t know if it is the art, the main character/love interest, or the plot. Idk. I am getting like 2005-2008 vibes. Kaichou wa maid-sama as well. Currently I am seeing 18 or so volumes on goodreads and personally I find that hella long? I read the first 4 and I keep thinking how is this 18 volumes? But that could be because I don’t like the agonizing long period it takes people to get together in some manga that seem to be popular. Either way, I do recommend to give it a try. 3/5, maybe closer to 3.5/5.

Cheeky Brat is a thoroughly enjoyable young romance. Yuki is the high school basketball team manager, a very stoic and dedicated individual who is always professional in her job and in her personal life. Stumbling upon her when she's showing an unusual bit of emotion, Haruse, the team's cheeky playboy, is intrigued with Yuki and pursues her romantically. Their romance continues to be about opposites that attract. Her dedication to avoiding romance is infuriating, but it doesn't make it any less enjoyable to read. I see many comparisons to Maid Sama, but My Little Monster also comes to mind. I enjoyed the story, and especially the likeably awkward third point on the love triangle. Additionally, the illustrations, especially those of the basketball players, are excellent.
