Wenn Familien auseinanderdriften: Gibt es einen Weg zurück?

Sie waren beste Freundinnen, Paula und Sara, zwei vernachlässigte Mädchen, die alles teilten, die erste Liebe, die Träume vom Leben, die Wünsche nach Glück. Als Teenager hingen sie auf dem Flughafen Helsinki herum, machten ihre Leidenschaft für fremde Länder und weite Reisen schon bald zum gefährlichen Job – und verloren sich schließlich aus den Augen.

Doch dann, Jahre später, beobachtet Sara zufällig, wie ihre ehemalige Schulfreundin, hochschwanger und in Handschellen, aus einer Iberia-Maschine in einen Grenzschutzbus geführt wird. Was sie nicht weiß: dass man Paula in die Psychiatrie bringt und dass sie von dort bald verschwinden wird. Wenig später erhält Paulas Mutter Pirjo per Email Tagebücher zugesandt. Es dauert eine Weile, bis sie das eigene Kind darin erkennt. denn die Verfasserin bezeichnet sich nach einer Figur in Twin Peaks als Laura Palmer. Als Pirjo das begreift, macht sie ihren früheren Mann ausfindig, Johan Lampen, Offizier der Küstenwache, der sich vor Jahren dazu entschieden hat, keine Rolle im Leben seiner Tochter spielen zu wollen. Nun begibt er sich auf die weltweite Suche nach ihr – um wieder zusammenzuführen, was vor Jahren aufgrund von Missverständnissen und Sprachlosigkeit auseinanderdriftete wie vor Urzeiten die Kontinente …

Somewhere in here, there's an actual story that is really quite good. The problem is just that the author keeps meandering off into seemingly random, pointlessly detailed musings and lectures about anything and everything, drowning the plot in a disjointed mess that drags on and on without really getting anywhere for a long time.

4,5/5. Jo kolmas Finlandia-ehdokkuus Hannu Raittilalle (Ei minulta mitään puutu 1998, Canal grande 2001). Tämä Terminaali ei mielestäni jää juurikaan – jos ollenkaan – jälkeen Finlandia-voittaja Canal grandesta. Raittila ei taida juurikaan tarjota mitään erityisen hienoja lainattavaksi sopivia yksittäisiä kohtia. Koko teksti on hienoa ja tasavahvaa.

This is by far the most difficult book to rate this year. I liked it, but it felt disjointed but then also not. What I'm trying to say is that there were separate stories linking to each other and it took a long time for the whole story to unfold and even in the end there were still things that were not entirely clear. I liked how it depicts the changes in the whole air industry in the aftermath of the September 11th events. It deals with big and important issues in a delicate way but also in a way that made me want to read more about them. The descriptions of sea and being on the sea were wonderful even though towards the end some of it felt a bit too much like freely flowing thoughts instead of structured part of the story. This novel is very much about reading between the lines to find the motives and backstory and as such it's not an easy one although it wasn't too hard to read. You can tell a lot of research has gone into this novel and at times I was wondering if I'm reading about the history of some particular thing or if it truly is an important part of the plot. Somehow I can easily understand why this appealed to the Finlandia Prize shortlist makers, it's the kind of novel that makes you feel there is something interesting going on in the literature scene over here.

Ensimmäiset kaksi osaa olivat ihan loistavia!!! Valitettavasti viiden tähden vauhdista tiputtiin kirjan viimeisessä eli kolmannessa Syyriaa käsittelevässä osuudessa. Se oli kirjan muuhun tasoon nähden pettymys. Siksi yhden tähden miinus. Onneksi kolmas osa on ohuin (tuintui etteä Raittila ei enää oikein jaksanut kirjoittaa kirjaa tässä vaiheessa, vähän EVVK, kunhan tarinan saa loppuun), joten se ei kokonaiskuvassa niin paljoa haittaa. Sep 11th tapahtumien seuraaminen ja faktojen upea esittely (terrori-iskun jälkeisistä päivistä) oli koukuttavaa, tunnelmaltaan hienoin kohtaus oli merimatka Tyynellä merellä ja päiväntasaajan ylittäminen eteläiseltä pohjoiselle pallonpuoliskolle. Lumoavaa!

The first few chapters of the book were quite good, but after them things turned fairly disjointed and incoherent. Plenty of the time the author seemed more interested in educating the reader about technical details rather than taking the story forward.

A story of a (broken) family and travel around the world. Hannu Raittila rarely (never?) writes linearly. As usual, here we have multiple timelines and multiple characters right from the beginning. The story revolves around Laura, the daughter, who is present only through her old diary. Her father, mother, and best friend are briefly introduced in the beginning in a scene at Helsinki Airport in 2011. After that, the novel dives in multiple directions at once. The past and the present of the characters is described in short chapters that at first don't seem to converge at all. Some chapters are adolescent diary, some academic research, some old man reminiscing, etc. The genius is that if you concentrate, the novel will reward you with the pieces of the puzzle fitting together.

The novel is set in the real world and events. The description of 9/11 attacks aftermath and its effects on air travel is a reminder that the security theatre was not always there. And the civil war in Syria was already ongoing in 2011, and affects mainly civilians. There's a part where Johan (the father) sails by a boat in the Pacific and Caribbean searching for Laura.

At the same time the world is very dangerous and very interesting. The characters are competent travelers, and the novel awakes my wonderlust - there's so much to see.

Overall a fun read. Recommended to those who like to travel or are interested in air travel in particular. E.g. the Saint Martin airport sounds pretty interesting.

Hamuaa, hamuaa, mutta ei pääse oikein mihinkään. Yksityiskohtaista kerrontaa mm. rajavartioinnista ja purjehtimisesta, mutta juoni ja henkilöt jäävät ohuiksi. Ihmettelen kirjailijan tyylivalintaa, jossa tärkeää on kertoa paljon, mutta ilman että henkilöt kasvavat aidosti kiinnostaviksi.
Aihio on hyvä, mutta fokus hukassa. Miksi pääpaino on luetella päähenkilöiden tarinaa kuin listaa, jota vaan pitää tankata, kun olisi voinut rakentaa kiehtovaa, tiivistä tarinaa. Lukija etääntyy nopeasti juonesta ja hahmoista eikä tiedä miksi tarina on haluttu kertoa.

Kertoo kai viime vuosista, mutta jännä huomata miten teräväksi ajankuvaukseksi kirjoitettu kirja voi tuntua niin vanhentuneelta vain 9 vuotta julkaisunsa jälkeen.

Kertomus on hieno, monipolvinen ja riittävillä koukuilla punottu, mutta samalla moni kohta tuntui siltä, että kertojan sijaan äänessä on kirjailija, joka haluaa tuoda tietämyksensä tai taustatutkimuksensa esille. Muuten ehkäpä nelitähtinen.

Raittilamainen teos. Ihmisiä hajallaan maailman pyörityksessä ja siinä sivussa luennoidaan erilaisista teknisistä yksityiskohdista. Purjehduksen, rajavalvonnan ja lentoliikenteen maailmat osoittautuivat kovin mielenkiintoisiksi. Loppu ehkä vähän hajoaa, mutta Syyrian-kuvio on kaikessa omituisuudessaan kuitenkin hyvin ajankohtainen ja kiinnostava.

Die Charaktere waren irgendwie alle gleich, sehr langweilig, ich hatte keinen gerne und mir war relativ egal was mit denen passiert.

Und ja der Autor ist extrem schlau und weiß eine Menge Zeug aber, dass muss man mir nicht in jedem Kapitel zeigen

Alkoi tosi lupaavasti mutta sitten hajosi ja jotenkin lässähti ja kuivui kasaan. Paljon kiinnostavia juttuja joka tapauksessa ihmisten ja tiedon liikkumisesta maailman ympäri.
