For artist Dan Bellamy and his new bride Elaine, a trip on the world's biggest, newest cruise ship represents more than just the honeymoon of a lifetime: it is also a celebration of the progress Dan has made toward beating the agoraphobia that has plagued him since he suffered a horrific knife attack two years earlier.

The ship is a perfect floating paradise, but when Dan spots what he thinks is a body being thrown overboard, he begins to suspect that not everybody aboard the Oceanus is there for a vacation.

Soon, Dan will discover that there are some things worse than murder, and the body he saw is just the beginning. Because something is coming for the passengers on the Oceanus.

Something that isn't supposed to exist...

Another great book by this author!

The author contacted me and I received a copy of the novel in exchange of a honest review.

THE FEAR BOAT

...the world was full of ordinary people; that everyone was ordinary, and terrible things happened all the same.

In this gigantic cruise liner, the Oceanus, you won't get to be entertained by "Your Cruise Director" or even get a refreshing drink from "Your Bartender", however mysterious creatures will be entertained with you and they certainly will drink...

...from you!!!

In Adrift, the chaos will be the captain of this voyage of fear where the entire crew and passengers will be trapped with terrible creatures able to manipulate our fear and they enjoy it while doing it!

Dan Bellamy and his wife, Elaine, are enjoying their honeymoon and they paid a sum over their own financial capacity just to get a basic cabin, in the maiden voyage of the luxurious Oceanus.

Steven Vega, Mark and Katie are some of the key members of the Security Detail aboard of the cruise liner that they are clueless that they will be tested beyond of their wildest nightmares.

The four Rennick Brothers: Edgar, Herb, Seb and Phil; they are unwanted passengers with a mission, that believe it or not, it's based on the premise of saving the humanity!

Chaos and fate will play with all these characters, crossing their paths in unpredictable forms, along this very dark night of fear.

A MASTER OF CHAOS

Funny how people decided that they needed leadership after all, when the shit was hitting the fan.

Adrift is another great horror novel by K.R. Griffiths, showing his versatility inside of the genre, since this novel is as great as his previous work, Survivor, BUT it's a totally different style, situations, elements, etc...

Always its refreshing to find authors that while they did novels with potential to create their own series, still they are willing to test themselves to avoid falling into "comfort zones".

Also, while the books have their own potential to generate a series, they have their own ending. You can feel a sense of closure on each novel that it's something that I highly praise in any book.

If you can find something similar in the previous book, Survivor and this novel, Adrift, is that K.R. Griffiths is a "master of chaos". I mentioned in my previous review of Survivor, that he must knew and use the "chaos theory" mentioned on Jurassic Park by Michael Chrichton, and definitely, K.R. Griffiths is able to release the chaos into his works showing the unpredictability of life, where you never will get your plans done as you pictured them on your brains. Life always make impossible to acomplish any plan exactly as you put it in paper.

So, in any moment that you think that you can predict how the storyline will go, chaos will show you that it's better to enjoy the ride as it goes without expecting anything.

Will some things happen in ways that you won't like? Sure!!! Life does that too.

Oh man that was an adrenaline-laced thrill ride into vampire hell. I've already been searching and found an EMP protection bag to carry my essentials in the next time I go on a cruise so I'm not caught blindsided like they were. And by essentials I mean nightvision goggles, a VHF radio, lighters etc. you know everything you need to get around a dark cruise ship with a bunch of mass murdering monsters after you- forget the sunscreen, swimsuits and sunglasses. Lol : )

Its 1:00 am already and I should be trying to sleep since I have to work in the morning but I'm dying to start the next book. That should tell you how good this one was!

Great no-frills horror story! By no frills, I mean there were not any dumb deviations to the central plot. You know the kind I mean....something that takes away from the action to pad the story. I wasn't expecting anything more than 'newly married couple get stranded on luxury cruise' so not only was I pleasantly surprised that it is so much more than that but it pretty much grabbed me and didn't let go. I will be reading more from this author for sure.

True horror

Now THIS is how horror is supposed to be done people!!! No long, boring build up,..no stupid love story forced in,..no pathetic attempts by an author that doesn't know if he wants to write horror or romantic comedies!! This book was satisfyingly awesome. True gory, gruesome horror in which none of the characters were safe or protected. Starts off well, and gets increasingly better until the end,...and I can only hope the author follows up with a sequel.
If you like horror that's pure scary and keeps you turning the pages then buy this book.
If you want romance and comedy with happy endings,...then you don't want horror do you?!
Pay attention Strand and McBride,...this guy knows what real horror is meant to be.

This is the best horror book I've read since Bird Box! A return to horror on a primal level. The kind that is merciless and doesn't break for storylines. This preyed on all of my fears in the best way. Highly recommend for horror fans!

I loved this book! It was exciting, intense, and a scary ride. The story is well written, the characters are well developed, and I had a hard time putting the book down. No spoilers, but once the “box” opened, I couldn’t put the book down.

This is an amazing author who is great at building suspense. I hope this ends up as a series, I see a lot of potential for future books.
I highly recommend this book, and recommend anything written by this author as well!

This book was a lot of fun. Good story, just enough gore to leave a little to the imagination (which I think makes for scarier stories) and an unlikely hero. I really enjoyed reading it

Having been on 3 cruises over the years, I had to check this thriller out. I had just read my first K.R. Griffiths book: Panic (Wildfire Chronicles Vol. 1) by K.R. Griffiths and loved that one. So to no surprise I ended up really liking this one. 5-stars easy for me. Well written, scary, bloody/gory, and a very isolated location all make this a fun scary read. You can bet I will be starting on: Adrift 2 Sundown (Adrift Series) by K.R. Griffiths right after I read the 2nd Wildfire book: Shock (Wildfire Chronicles Vol. 2) by K.R. Griffiths . If you like suspenseful horror stories, try this author out.

Adrift

Self-publish/Sinister Grin Press Limited Edition Hardcover

Author: K. R. Griffiths

Rating: 4.5/5

I am a sucker for Sinister Grin Press’s covers. It was no shock when a couple of weeks ago, I saw the preorder announcement for K. R. Griffith’sAdrift, I was overcome with desire to purchase it. Given that the limited edition hardcover does not ship until June, I could not wait that long. I hopped online and purchased the eBook version and began to devour it.

The premise is pretty intriguing in its own right. Dan, an artist that is overcoming agoraphobia and PTSD brought on by an attempted murder, goes on a honeymoon with his newlywed, Elaine. The couple decides to take a cruise on the new ship Oceanus, a hulking new cruise ship that is large enough to be a floating luxury paradise. Quickly after getting settled in, Dan spots a body being thrown overboard. Given that he is prone to panic attacks, he reports the observation to the ship’s security team. From there, the story spirals out of control.

Adrift is a monster story. It is classic in many ways while completely turning old horror stereotypes on their head. I cannot describe much regarding this as the plot has many twists and turns. Therefore, you would be well served to go in as blind as I did when reading this novel.

The monsters in Adrift are nasty and brutal. The book opens with a woman running down the alley in fear. She ends up being brought back to the place where she was running from, only to be coerced into slicing off chunks of her own body and feeding it to one of the creatures piece by piece. This is in just the first few pages!

As stated earlier, Dan, one of the novel’s main characters, suffers from agoraphobia and crippling panic attacks. Griffiths’ writing is so absurdly well written that the moments of panic and fear from the character’s natural emotions are just as tense as when he is on the run from the creatures. There is a large portion of the first half of the novel where Dan’s own fear and thoughts are the driving force of tension.

Adrift breaks away at a quick pace from the opening sentence. There is a lot of story and world building that is done on the run. Characters are established with crystal clarity in just a short amount of time and die off just as quickly as you begin to care. K. R. Griffiths’ writing is brimming with so much creativity that you never know where the story is going to take you.

Before Adrift, I was unfamiliar with K. R. Griffiths’ work. Needless to say, I will be hunting down his other works. Adrift is a tremendous body of work that begs to never be put down. The world that has been established is one that I hope to see more of. According to Griffiths’ site, he is already working on a sequel tentatively titled The Black River. In the meantime, you can pre-order the limited edition hardcover here at Sinister Grin Press or purchase the eBook on Amazon.

I DNFed somewhere around 5%. I don't care enough to go and check the exact percentage.

This had vibes of being a B-horror movie. Not the kind that becomes a hit on a shoestring budget. More like the kind that fails because the budget is a partially unwrapped stick of Doublemint gum that has been in your grandmother's purse since 1972, is covered in some type of fuzz, and tastes mostly like Granny's perfume.

Not what I consider as my genre so I had reservations about whether to read this book. Had I been told it was about vampires I would definitely has skipped it. So pleased I didn't as it really is a thrilling read. The first chapter left me a little bewildered but don't panic, it's all part of this author's plan. The story quickly evolves into a gripping read with plenty of gore. No hesitation in recommending this excellent horror novel

This was fun, but ultimately a little disappointing. The opening is intensely creepy and the first half then works as an engaging and exciting build up to the horror reveal that happens about half way through. After that the book goes downhill a little, not massively, but it didn't live up to the expectations that the first half had built. The climax is a little weak too, although the final page is great. The action is pretty solid throughout, the lead character is engaging and there are some funny lines. Overall then, it's an entertaining read and I'm pretty sure I'll pick up the sequel at some point.

Well, this is another one of those alternative vampire tales for so-called authors thinking horror readers are completely jaded about vampire tales. Very high on the gore side and very low on the intellect side. So stupid, I was hoping that these imaginary characters would die into a moldy, mushy bowl of Cream of Wheat. They didn't. Thus, I was disappointed.

A "vampire" tale like none I've ever read. First I've read by this author; but if his other stories are like this...I'm in! Once this story got going, I couldn't put it down. If you like horror (well written horror) I highly recommend this one.

Well this was definitely an intense book, one that kept me turning the pages. There was honestly so much hopelessness that I seriously couldn't even imagine how anyone was going to make it out alive.

But while the intensity kept me enthralled, there was a lot of repetitive thought to the characters that was seemingly unnecessary. And maybe it was to show that each character was coming to their own realizations for things, that they were noticing, but for the reader you're just getting the exact same information, in detail, multiple times from different perspectives.

It definitely wasn't a bad read, and I'd probably still recommend it, IF you have no problem with gore, as there is a lot. It is the first book in a trilogy (I think?) so I might read the next one just for further explanation for some things that were barely touched on.

Now, there are specific things I had some issues with/wanted to address, but it WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS.

So, here is your warning.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON.

First. It makes me slightly bitter that both of the "main" female characters died. All two of them. For the most part, Katie was fine until hell was unleashed, where the men took over and led her around everywhere until eventually she died. And then Elaine's death too. We had some chapters from her POV, but she wasn't written nearly as well, I guess, as the male characters were. Not as in depth? Maybe I'm just being finicky.

Second. While I do appreciate the different interpretation of vampire myths, I was slightly disappointed when it was vampires. They weren't necessarily vampires as we see them, or know them as they are "otherworldly," but I would have appreciated it more if they were strictly otherworldly creatures. Maybe with a different name that was created by the author. That would have just added even more of his own creativity into the story, rather than his taking an already existing legend and changing it a bit to fit his needs. I don't know, I think it just took me out of the story the first time they said "vampires," because I had already pictured one thing and then it was changed to something I was familiar with without being something I was actually familiar with (especially because I am a fan of The Lost Boys and Stephen King's vampires). Again, maybe I'm being finicky, but I think doing something other than vampires would have added to the horror of the story.

A cruise ship, A treaty made with ancient vampires and human sacrifice.

Adrift follows a newly married couple Dan and Elaine on their honeymoon vacation on board the Oceanus a floating paradise. Dan who suffers from panic attacks and agoraphobia is already feeling massively out of his comfort zone being on board the ship.

Once out at sea, Dan see's something from the balcony of his suit, a body being thrown overboard. Heading off to find security to report what he's seen Dan doesn't realise what he's about to be dragged into.

When an EMF bomb goes off and disables everything electric including the ship itself. Everyone starts to panic, Then a helicopter drops a large container on the ship. This is when the trouble really starts.

I gave this book 4-Stars. I did enjoy but I'm glad I got it for free on kindle unlimited as I found it a bit of a slow starter and it didn't really get me going towards the end.

I liked how the vampires weren't your typical vampire that you get these days, I did enjoy how they were different. The way I pictured them in my head is very different to how they are portrayed in many other books/films and shows these days.

I found I liked Dan as a character I could relate to him as I suffer from the same anxiety issues as he does, for other reasons but still. I do like a character I can relate to. I also liked how the brothers redeemed themselves in the end.

I will be reading book two but again I can get it free with Kindle Unlimited so I don't think I shall be purchasing it.

Books like Adrift are great when you are just in need of some good ole' gore and action. While I love some deep character development and world building and side stories sometimes you just want to read something that is fun and enjoyable and without all the extras. I mean if you're someone that NEEDS the things I listed then maybe this book may not suit your taste, you're pretty much catapulted into the action from the word go and I can tell you it doesn't not let up (even in the epilogue). Having gone into this blind other than seeing the cover and a quick glance at the synopsis (I don't read reviews before starting a book) I wasn't actually expecting the monster reveal, it wasn't what I had pictured in my head so that was a nice little surprise and an interesting take on a somewhat saturated and probably tired 'monster villain'.

Nonetheless I will definitely be picking up the second in this series in the near future to see where it goes from here. I was very impressed by the author and the writing style.

You Won't Want to Stop Till You Read All 3!

Anyone who knows me, or reads my reviews, knows I very rarely give a 5 star rating. I've read many great books that I've rated as 4 star, not because they were lacking in any way but personally I choose to save 5 stars for those books, or series, that in my opinion are those rare gems of creativity that take the reader to a whole other level of experience. A level where it's virtually impossible to put the book down, when you do put it down your mind wanders back eager to pick up the tale where you last left off, characters that are created so well they grow into their own unique, vivid reality , and a story line that should be laughable it's so far fetched but instead it not only makes sense, it comes across as both plausible and authentic. This book and the other 2 in this trilogy hit every ideal of a great read. If you like apocalyptic type stories or horror then this is a must read trilogy!

Newlywed’s Dan and Elaine are on a honeymoon cruise. They’re starting a new life together and hoping that Dan can make more headway dealing with his agoraphobia. It sounds romantic and hopeful. Now, this is the author’s cue to toss in the monkey wrench. Dan sees what appears to be a body being tossed overboard. That mystery soon takes a back seat when a mysterious container is dropped on board and out pours things more fiendish than his phobia could dream up.

Putting a bunch of people in a life threatening situation with nowhere to run is a favorite scenario for me. I enjoy trying to guess who steps up to the plate, who tucks tail and runs and who becomes part of the menu. There’s plenty of character’s to choose from and with only a few I actually was pulling for, that left a bunch as appetizers.

Adrift would be a killer movie. A whole lot of runnin and screamin and good old horror on the high seas. I ate it up.

Only took a couple of days to finish. Large print and small pages helped with that.

Pretty absurd book. The descriptions of the vampires were repetitive. Could've just called them insect vampires.

Some characters got quick deaths for how much they were built up. Elaine had multiple chapters trying to avoid death only to get her head lopped off like that. Mark the security guard suddenly having a broken neck outta nowhere. Nothing about Edgar after putting Herb and Dan in the box. Did he fight the vampire? Did the ship just blow up and that was it?

I'm not super interested in the next book. Not really wondering what a hermetic is. I saw a pic of the third book with a claw stick up above the White House ready to strike. Almost feel like I have to to find out what the hell that'll be about.

Pretty meh.

I actually ordered this book when it was free for kindle because I thought it sounded interesting and I liked the cover picture. It is now one of my favorites! I could not put this book down. It has amazing suspense and the story is completely original. I was extremely pleased to see that this is part of a trilogy and two more bloody good books are waiting to be devoured by me at my earliest convenience...... ;)

A maiden voyage cruise ship, four brothers, a security team, two newlyweds, 3,000 guests, and no power in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean at night.....already the makes of a fascinating story, but then add in Pandora's Box being dropped into the middle of it all and releasing the spawn of Hell.....NOW you've got an AMAZING novel....and he called it "Adrift"......

I'll admit to being a little skeptical on this at first; it took me a little while to really hook into it. But once I did, I could not put it down. This is slow building tension that takes a sudden right turn into hair-raising horror. I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a movie, because it feels both very visual and very visceral, and I think it would transition well. I could see it all in my head, making me feel like I was part of the story rather than reading it. I tried to guess who would come out alive, and I was wrong on virtually all counts. I know that everyone says that "no one is safe" when they're trying to sound edgy in their works, but truly, no one was safe in this. It kept me on the edge of my seat through brutal deaths and narrow escapes, pyrrhic victories and flying viscera.

A Chilling, High Octane Ride

Wow, this book had me hooked from the get go. What a great read. What a book. I really enjoyed this narrative. It had vivid well developed characters and a well thought out story plot with plenty of action, intrigue, mayhem and unimaginable terror. I can really see this as a movie. Congratulations to the author. This book added a unique spin to the vampire genre. I wouldn't really call the vampires your typical traditional vampires though, which was refreshing, they were demonic and horrifying evil monsters in every sense of the word, I can't wait to read the next instalment.

Interesting! I loved the idea of this novel. Thousands of passengers stranded at sea on one of the largest cruise ships in the world? Sign me up!

You know right away going into it that this voyage is not going to end well. Maybe not for anyone. The author does a great job at leaving a sense of dread hanging in the air for what’s to come. He’s not afraid to go full throttle and kill off characters— I love that!

When four unsuspecting passengers make it on board, it’s the least of their worries. The crew and passengers are about to fight for their lives from something unimaginable. And it’s just the beginning.

I can’t wait to venture into book two and see what the war brings.
