Sue Grafton was a #1 New York Times bestselling author. She is best known for her “alphabet series” featuring private investigator Kinsey Millhone in the fictional city of Santa Teresa, California. Prior to success with this series, she wrote screenplays for television movies. Her earlier novels include Keziah Dane (1967) and The Lolly-Madonna War (1969), both out of print. In the book Kinsey and Me she gave us stories that revealed Kinsey's origins and Sue's past.
Grafton never wanted her novels to be turned into movies or TV shows. According to her family she would never allow a ghost writer to write in her name. Because of these things, and out of respect for Sue’s wishes, the family announced the alphabet now ends at “Y”
Grafton was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America, the Ross Macdonald Literary Award, three Shamus Awards, and many other honors and awards.
Grafton had three children from previous marriages and several grandchildren, including a granddaughter named Kinsey. She and her husband lived in Montecito, California, and Louisville, Kentucky.
It is so refreshing to have a book that lasts, has great characters and is good from the first chapter to the last. This is a whole bunch of those books smooshed together. Enjoy.
I read each of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone novels. I didn't read them in order, although her relationships that are carried through the series would have made more sense to me if I had. They are good books and I waited each year for the next one to come out. A bit dry and certainly not like Janet Evanovich's books if you are looking for a long series of books. They have some serious undertones but the characters, particularly Kinsey, are people you get to know and Grafton's descriptions of her house, neighbors and friends are vivid enough that you will think you are right there with Kinsey going for a run every morning or eating at the local tavern. Word of caution. The series was started and stayed in the pre-cell phone/computer area so at times you can get frustrated and think why can't she just google that or use Waze and then you remind yourself, oh right, she doesn't have access to technology yet.
This is my favorite series of all time. I find myself, in each book, saying “I love these books!” Sue Grafton keeps things interesting and new with every story, while also making Kinsey familiar enough that she feels like a friend. Cannot recommend this series enough if you like mystery at all. There are laugh out loud moments, moments I identify with Kinsey’s personality, and moments of excitement in every book. Always last second before I figure out “whodunnit.” Highly recommend!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes ---------- How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
