This installment in the series was precisely what I had been hoping for—a captivating blend of an established relationship intertwined with political intrigue. It was thrilling to see how the romance played a supporting role while the complex political landscape took center stage.

In this book, Airón became less impulsive and started to think things over more before acting.
I adore Airón’s sassy demeanor; it adds such a vibrant energy to the story. While his caring nature can feel overbearing at times, it’s a quintessential part of who he is. Even when dealing with traitors, his compassion shines through.

Tallu’s character once again impressed me and made me adore him even more. His deep, unwavering love for Airón is both pure and intense, radiating through the pages. In this book, he truly came into his own, showcasing the qualities of a capable and inspiring leader.
He has come a long way from how he was in the first book, and I love his character development.

The dynamic between Airón and Tallu was beautifully written—soft, tender moments that melted my heart. Their mutual care and attentive listening created a sweetness that balanced the tension of the political intrigue and the intensity of the battles surrounding them. Those quiet interludes amongst the chaos were a testament to how well-matched they truly are.

However, I did dock a star because I found some aspects of the story quite repulsive, particularly due to my deep-seated fear of insects. The presence of centipedes played a significant role in the plot, and I was left on the edge of discomfort, nearly overwhelmed with nausea throughout much of the book.

All in all, I’m eagerly anticipating the next book in this series.

I did not like this installment in the series as much as the previous ones, sadly. My main complaint is that it is not a genre romance anymore. It is a plot heavy fantasy (and an epic one on top of that, too many fights, too little politics and court intrigues) and the relationship between the main characters has taken a back seat. What a contrast is to read a bonus story at the end of the book, a Chiti Bechi incident from Tallu's point of view; now this is what I came here for! The emotions, the drama, I want more!

The cover art is gorgeous, as always, so I am rounding the stars up to four. I still enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to the next one.

Idk why I thought this would be the final book in this series, but I guess not. I felt like speed running through this one but I couldn't feel the same intensity as the second book. The plot was okay, I like the action scenes. I'm not sure what it was yet but there's something missing for me. This one's still okay, but just fell a little short from my expectations.

well written but having issues connecting to the main couple

Rating: 4🌈

Shadow Throne King is the third novel in Kai Butler’s Emperor's Assassin series and I thought this is where the series would be wrapped up.

But there’s more to come and I’ll be honest, I’m struggling a bit here.

Butler has written about a complex political situation, with an equally strong layered world upon which the author made its foundation. Kingdoms at war, subtly and magically. Ice and fire, ancient blood magicians, and monstrosities abound.

And dragons as well as things that lurk in the dark.

That’s all pretty exciting. Love the ravens. And the characters are, individually, intriguing and given strong backgrounds.

Based on its elements alone, it’s a 4.5, as a series and story. Solidly crafted and executed so well that I really enjoyed it.

Especially that last section of dramatic fights and flight from the mountain. So excellent and moving. I was with those mountain badgers and their families every single step. And that song at that moment? Heartbreaking.

What I’m struggling with? And shouldn’t be is the relationship between the two main characters. I feel absolutely no connection with them. Individually yes. Together no.

I just don’t find them credible as a pair. No real chemistry between them. And Kai Butler can write chemistry like crazy. Just read Butler’s The Empty Throne Trilogy. But, at least for me, I’m not feeling it here.

I enjoy Airon, the northern assassin/Prince Consort, although at times I feel that he’s not consistent enough in his character for me here. He’s a trained assassin. Yet he doesn’t know to trust his instincts here in the story? Particularly regarding a certain character whose actions are screaming don’t trust me?

Things like that in a character and storyline just will take a reader right out of a narrative quickly. As it did me several times here.

For me, it just highlights that you can have all the “pretty things “ like great world building and details but you need to get the actual substance, the core , the relationship right for a story to feel complete. And at book three it’s not happening.

But could be that’s it’s just me. So for all the great execution of the plot and characters, 4 stars.

Strong third part, I like the metaphors for magic, the side characters were interesting as well as the twists and intrigues that were revealed. The world building just kept getting better and there was less spice because half the book was a road trip so I'm happy 😂 I also just found out that there is a forth book so once that comes to Audible, I'll be happy to know how this story ends! (Also, the narrator did a really good job with the voice for a certain something because fuuuuuck that was terrifying 😂)

Ultimately, a frustrating read.

Firstly, as I did with the prior book in the series, I had to go back to the book before this one and reread it in order to be able to keep up with the continuation of the story, as the author doesn't recap in any way and there are lots of characters and plotlines. I would not have been able to successfully follow the storyline in THIS book if the last book weren't fresh in my mind.

Secondly, this book really veers away from the genre "romance". Instead, I'd say it's a fantasy where the lead couple are same-sex and the sex scenes (there are two) are sparse. I could be OK with that, as this particular book is set in a scenario where the two would conceivably not have any opportunities for sex/prolonged intimacy, but quite honestly the relationship is beginning to feel really artificial from a romance viewpoint. It would be nice to see these two in a setting where they could do some serious verbal/mental interaction that goes deeper than animal attraction and satisfying sex.

As for the plot in this one, I would refer you to the classic Vincent Price horror film "The Tingler" (1959, Columbia Pictures) because the similarities are remarkable 😁

A further frustration is that there are times when the author's writing puts me behind the 🎱 (aka 8 ball) as to understanding what's going on, i.e. this comment by Airon:

The issue Airon is dealing with in this statement comes from out of the blue, as in "wait, when/how the hell did THAT happen?" The author confirms that this development seemingly came from out of nowhere by having Airon himself make this statement a little later on:

While the author may have all the details and plotlines neatly in place in their head, a reader is hard pressed to follow a line of logic when the cart drops in from out of the sky, and the horse is only put into the picture afterwards. This happened several times in the book, and it is quite frustrating as the goings on in the book are dense enough to begin with.

Not honestly sure if I'll go on to book 4, as my enjoyment of this couple has really waned. I think there could be some wonderfully strong dynamics between these two if their personal connection and interactions would be allowed to take a front seat in the story and get more in-depth exploration.

4.5 stars rounding up

“Shadow Throne King” is where I think the series really comes into its own. It packs a punch for the more nuanced exploration of this fascinating world that Kai Butler has created and feels more emotionally resonant given the build-up from the previous books.

There’s so much that I found so compelling here: the introduction of some deeper mysteries of this universe that has dragons and magic that’s layered into the strata of the world. Perhaps the most enthralling of all really is the relationship of a royal (and seemingly mismatched) couple who really wasn’t meant to be at all, giving some anchoring weight to the narrative amidst the chaos unfolding around them.

While the complicated politicking is my least favourite, I’ll admit that it’s this conflict that drives the relentless action, with dragons (!), creepy-crawlies (!), some undead…things that pose way too many challenges for a fragmenting empire and its emperor.

Throughout it all however, Airon and Tallu remain—rightly so—the mainstay of the entire series. But these exceptional protagonists aren’t just allies in their quest to bring down a corrupt regime. Their partnership, their steadfast and deep affection for each other was what drew me to them in the first place; their consistent support and love here keep me wanting more.

And Kai Butler doesn’t disappoint in this aspect at all with inexplicable third-act breakups or petty arguments that come out of nowhere—romantic pitfalls that can really take away from the enjoyment of the read. In fact, with them fighting for each other all the time makes you believe that they really can conquer anything together. It's written from only Airon's POV though and that's the one glring imbalance keeping Tallu too enigmatic and mysterious for our own good. Yet they’re a rare find in fiction and I’ll keep coming back…if only for them.

An enjoyable addition to a series that continues to improve with each entry.

I am glad that I have stuck with this series, as I’ve enjoyed each book more than the previous one. While I enjoyed this book, it’s still clumsy at times in everything from its world building to character development.

There are some things that are woefully under-explained, primarily the concept of Animalia - the fox, centipede, and spider. These seem to have come out of nowhere in this book (it reminded me of how the author’s San Amaro Investigations series took a complete left turn into other worlds and old gods midway through). There is also a lot going on with regard to the rogue generals, as well as the other kingdoms mentioned throughout the book.

Communication continued to be one of the most frustrating things with these books. At first, Airon’s lack of understanding of the nuanced communications within the imperium were interesting. However in moments like the first meeting between Kokei and Tallu, I’m not sure that either of them even knew what they were saying to one-another. I also found it frustrating that Airon didn’t communicate his observations about Asahi, and that Tallu didn’t explain the nuance of his curse and its impending outcome. These moments didn’t read as natural or parts of an evolving story, instead they felt like unforced errors for fake drama.

I wish I had a better way of describing why it feels this way, but it feels like the plot of these books is evolving in a haphazard way, instead of a coherently laid out plot line across the series. I’m basically waiting for the author to retcon her own series to make things work later.

While there were some things that held this back from being a 5-star read for me, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I look forward to reading the next entry when it’s available.

Book 1 & 2 of this series were some of my favorites on audiobook this year …This one not so much.

The vibe is much different between the main couple, who've largely been ignored in favor of the world-building. This is fine. I understand they're established, but this novel doesn't really bring anything new for Tallu or Airón as a couple, so if you were into the previous books for their relationship, this one might not be for you.

The real issue is that this addition feels a lot less cohesive. This book is a lot darker and more graphic than the last two, and what was once a fairly generic but fun magic system took a strange turn right from chapter one into the horror genre with (spoilers) This feels a little bit late to be introducing such a large section of new things to worry about, and the issues presented at the end of the last book went largely undealt with before (quite literally) opening a new can of worms right from chapter 1.

More spoilers on why I didn't like this one -

I might listen to book 4, but idk. I'm happy with books 1 & 2.

Sigh.
Not quite what I’d hoped for.

There was quite a bit of romantic development for Tallu and Airon in the later stages of book 2, and the beginnings of trust. But, starting this book, it felt like I’d missed some vital information between then and now because their relationship is suddenly as solid as rock.

And that’s it. It seems that the author is done with their romance and concentrates more or less on the action plot. Yes, we get a few tender seconds and some heat on two occasions, but the storyline comes first. To be honest, I felt a bit cheated. I really needed more from these guys, needed more feels and more visible depth to their relationship.

The plot, as expected, is super busy. So many names. So much happening. The constant drain of not being able to trust anyone. The MCs dropping virtually non-stop from one life threatening situation into another. The imagination is super vivid, ideas and images tumbling off the pages in abundance (and I commend the author for that!) … but for me it was sometimes too much.

And another thing, one that’s purely on me … I felt pretty disgusted by the ‘vicious creepy things’ (trying not to say too much here) and didn’t really want to read about them.

I liked Airon more this time round (even if he still thinks he’s God’s gift to assassins). I liked what happens on the magic front for him and how he truly cares for Tallu.
Tallu felt very much in the background in this instalment. I’d love a book in his POV (or at least a few chapters). Clearly, there is a lot to be resolved about his dire situation with a few more books to come when I thought this was going to be a trilogy.

I finished this because I was curious enough to want to know how it would all work out.
But I admit this is my least favourite series by this author atm. A bit sad here.

1️⃣ **Overall Rating:** ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

2️⃣ **Overview/Synopsis:**: This is book three in the Assassins Blade Series. Tallu and Aíron are diving into the search for General Maki and the Heir to the Atobe name.

3️⃣ **Favorite Character:**: Aíron. I love his ridiculous side but also how much he wants and loves Tallu. He’s taken a broken boy and given him hope.

4️⃣ **Most Memorable Scene:**: Any scene where Tallu gets protective and fiery over Aíron.

5️⃣ **Favorite Quote or Line:**: “You are the garden, you are all the flowers I would ever want to see, and all the fruit I would ever want to consume.”

6️⃣ **Overall Review Summary:**: Yet another book I was not so patiently waiting for and it was more than worth the wait.

I absolutely loved seeing more of the world building Butler does and more of the lore and magic of this universe. I’m fascinated by the Animalia and the magic woven into the tales.

Tallu and Aíron are so perfect together. The fierceness in which they love each other and protect each other is written so beautifully. They have amazing chemistry and complete devotion to each other. I was asking myself as the end of the book neared how the curse was going to work itself out and was thrilled to see there’s going to be more books!

This series is absolutely amazing. I feel like this is easily the MM equivalent of ACOTOR. If not more.

Third in series (Emperor’s Assassin), must be read in order. Fantasy. Established couple. Single POV. Heed content warnings.

Immediately following the second book, this story is sort of a side quest from the ultimate goal of bringing down the empire as Airón and Tallu travel to engage the dwarven king and determine whether Tallu’s brother is still alive. The political machinations remain in full force as Airón and Tallu navigate possible allies and enemies all while trying to keep each other close and safe.

This story kept up the fast paced, danger filled adventure and had me anxious throughout worrying how Airón and Tallu would be able to come out on top. I absolutely love that Airón and Tallu are both intelligent, capable, lethal, and fiercely loyal to each other, it certainly felt as long as they were together they could overcome anything. My favorite parts are the moments Airón and Tallu have alone on page, and this story continues to be engrossing and entertaining. 4.5 rounded up

I needed this escape into a world so entrancing, so intriguing that it had me hesitating to turn the next page, even as I greedily anticipated what could happen next. I’ll readily admit I would never have expected what did happen, and I want more. More Airón, more Tallu, more of this fantastic world.

“Your brain—your magic—is more to me than a patch of weeds in the garden… You are the garden, you are all the flowers I would ever want to see, and all the fruit I would ever want to consume.”

I live for the tender, quiet, honest moments that only Airón gets to experience. I don’t know how Tallu does it, how he can hold so much of himself apart, hide so much of himself and play the courtly machinations daily. I’m exhausted reading about it, and yet, I’m addicted to the games, to the scheming, and to the underlying mystery with its uncertain resolution that has me craving for more.

Airón, Tallu, I am yours.

Airón and Tallu have come so far in this journey of politics and war but there is so much still to be done. Starting right from where we left off the Imperium is splintered and news of the lost heir can't be ignored. Heading on a mad trip to the mountain kingdom seems to be the one move that they can play at this time.

This series really drags me in and keeps me interested. Following Airón as he winds his way through this strange world, trying to achieve his goals. His love for Tallu is so strong and to see them as an equal pair is so special. Dancing around each other though expectations takes a toll on both of them.

I also appreciate seeing more of the main Dogs Sagam and Asahi, I hope we get some more insights into their relationship as the small glimpses are so precious.

Solid third installment, interested to see where we end up and if the boys can achieve the end goal they want and get the happy ending they desire.

I really love Airón & Tallu’s relationship. They’re so cute together 🥰

I get slightly more invested in the political plot with each book, but it’s still forgettable. I’m not sure if I liked this book more or less than the previous one. The 2nd one was addictive but boring, and this one wasn’t as boring, but I didn’t feel the urge to read it all the time. 2.5★ ish too, I guess.

At least we finally learned something about Airón’s family’s whereabouts. I was wondering, did no one care that the emperor chose him instead of his sister and made their plans more difficult? They wouldn’t even check how he’s doing by writing a letter or something? I thought maybe I accidentally skipped that part, so I let it pass, but yay finally. Hello, 🤗

I’ll stick around for the conclusion. I wanna see how they and then live their happily ever after, please and thank you.

Shadow Throne King is an excellent continuation of the Emperor’s Assassin series. I recommend rereading prior books before starting on this one because there is A LOT of information and many characters to keep up with.
I enjoyed getting back into this world. There is so much going on all the time, and I was…tired…when I was done. Not tired in a bad way. No, tired in the way you get when you finish a huge work project that you’re proud of. Tired in the way you get when you go on vacation and do everything that can be packed into the days allotted. The good tired. This book made me good tired.
Tallu and Airón are still working well together towards completing their agenda. I feel more confident in their connection with every book. I still wish I could get Tallu’s point of view, but his character development is such that I can infer from his mannerisms and reactions what his position is in most things. They are a good couple.
I am excited to see what happens in the next book.
I look forward to more from this author.

This is the third book in a series (so gentle note here that you’ll definitely want to start at the beginning, if you haven’t already). The narrative moves quickly, there’s momentum and urgency aplenty and lots of moments that feel fraught for both the larger plot for Airón and Tallu in particular. I love the intensity of the feeling between these two– it’s perfectly calibrated for the people they are and the world they inhabit. Overall, it’s ridiculously easy (in the best possible way) to get caught up in this installment of their story, and to want more once you get to the end.

Shadow Throne King brings the Emperor’s Assassin trilogy to its sharpest turn yet, with Airón and Tallu facing new enemies, darker magic, and the whispers of betrayal that threaten everything they’ve built. Butler’s political intrigue deepens, and the cracks in Tallu’s heart bleed into the court’s fragile alliances, making every decision feel like a gamble with life or death. The emotional tension between them is raw and grounded—Airón’s doubts and Tallu’s secrets finally collide in a way that feels earned and devastating. It’s a powerful, high-stakes culmination that sets up a compelling path forward!

I started reading this series because I thought this is going to be the last book. Well, it isn't.

To be honest I can't really relate to Airón. The single PoV is not helping me relate to the story either. Tallu's insecurities that should make him more relatable just make him feel whiny for me. The sex scenes are unnecessarily long, even if there are at least not many of them. And the whole plot is forced around the ending. Yay, they won, they defeated the enemy. Oh wait, no, more challanges. Okay, now they won and defeated the enemy. But no, still more shit to come. It was over the top.

Still not bad, but I prefer the Empty Throne Trilogy.

This was a fast paced, edge-of-your-seat, thrilling ride full of intrigue and danger. Loyalties are tested and questioned, allies are found in unexpected places, but through it all Airón remains steadfast in his love. Parts of this story were gory and dark with the overall atmosphere far from light hearted, but there was time for a few quiet and gentle moments. I loved the imagery and further world building. For some reason I thought this was a trilogy and kept think “how are they going to wrap this up with so few pages left.” I’m glad I was mistaken and I can’t wait for the next book.

This third installment had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was fast paced, tense and full of unexpected twists. Loyalties get shaken, alliances shift and danger lurks around every corner but through it all, Airón’s devotion never wavered.

Some scenes were dark and even a little gruesome, which made the story feel gritty and real, but I also appreciated the quieter moments that gave space to breathe and reflect.

I loved seeing more intimate moments between Airón and Tallu. They really have come a long way and I’m here for it.

I love this series - as all the previous series by Kai Butler ... what can I say, I am a fan

this book is so different from the previous books, but perfect for the series. I loved the developments and i was biting my nails regarding Asahi (what can I say, I love him)

the developments here are unexpected, the pacing is phenomenal, the storyline is fantastic - and I love both Tallu and Airon.
their relationship gets stronger every day, and Airon is growing up.

Can't wait for the next book

This was the excellent third installment in this series who must be read in order for maximum enjoyment. I’m not sure why I thought that this was the last in the series as it definitely was not. There is at least one more book coming. I purchased this ebook directly from the author which I recommend to anyone interested in supporting their favorite authors. Overall, this was an excellent read which I can highly recommend.
