Juliet was my childhood sweetheart, my wife, my everything - until she betrayed me to the authorities for my “dangerous” research.
I cut her out of my life, but I couldn’t cut out my obsession. Now the Brotherhood has given me the chance to take her back.
All Brothers must choose a Ward. For me, there’s only Juliet.
But she has a dark side I never knew existed. Masked men, punishment, and a desperate need for a master. I can deliver it all - if she doesn’t know it’s me.
She’ll wake, trapped in a dungeon from the video game she designed. Jailed by her own creation. I’ll become her demon prince, and Juliet will learn I’m the master she’s always craved.
But a silent attacker threatens it all with a coded message. Not even the Compound is safe from this specter in the walls.
Zara began writing in her thirties after reading a series of “fade to black” fantasy books and wondering why the hell the author didn’t make them smuttier.
Challenge, accepted.
She loves creating magical fantasy worlds, turbulent relationships and dark, kinky heroes (who could be villains if you squint a bit.)
When she’s not thinking up ways to torment her characters, Zara lives on the beautiful Gold Coast, Australia with two kiddos and a husband who make her real life far more magical than her stories.
Hadrian has always been the geeky, quiet guy. The one that spent most of his time in his lab working on his AI technology. But there was always one thing he couldn't quite get over.. and that is Juliet, his ex wife. Even though she ruined his life.
Juliet is a smart woman, who now has more money than she knows what to do with since selling her gaming company. But deep down she's always been missing something... the need to be owned by someone. To have her choices taken away and be told what to do.
So when Hadrian finds out what she really wants there's only one simple thing to do, and that's kidnap her. That's not too bad is it?? Well in the eyes of the brotherhood that's what's expected.
I loved their story so much! I always love seeing all the other people from the previous books. And Candice, even though she's technically AI, is the real MVP.
Now let's talk about that freaking ending!!! All I'm gonna say is KENDRICK!!! OH MY GODDDDDDD!
How does this series just keep on getting better?!
If you're after a dark romance with an edge of difference, this series has you covered (unlike the wards - you have to read to understand)
It's cliché but oh, so true when they say It's always the quiet ones. Don't judge a book by it's cover, a magician never reveals their secrets...
Who would have thought the most daring out of the box captor was hiding in Hadrian's shell? He wins the ultimate makeover trophy from lanky geek to an inked muscular masterpiece. He's had time to prepare and become the very man his Ward to be wishes to be punished by. Yep she's a real sucker for punishment and likes it hard, in more ways than one.. and in multiple holes for good measure.
Not only does Hadrian go full transfo for this woman, she also happens to be his Ex Wife 😱 Who even does that... an ex is usually an ex for a reason, right?
This book — it blew away my expectations. Hadrian’s character was one that was intriguing in earlier books, but never fully developed. We really get to peek behind the mask of Handrian so to say in this one!
His and Juliet’s story is just wow. I couldn’t put it down! It was spicy as all get out and a total page turner. I couldn’t read fast enough.
The cliffhanger at the end of this? Boy of boy. I am excited for book 5!
Fourth book in Zara’s series about the Onyx Brotherhood. Story is based around Hadrian and Juliet. This book is brilliant to say the least, it’s everything we want from the Dom/Sub perspective and I love the masked man vibe we had early on…spice level 🌶️🌶️🌶️ but I would’ve loved more please Zara! I would’ve rated 5 stars but my life got busy and the book didn’t pull me back in to finish it off as quickly as it should have but I still wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book, in fact the entire series to anyone with a twisted mind like my own…enjoy 😉
I didn't think I would like Hadrian as the MMC as much as I did. He always seemed too geeky and timid in previous books. I was surprised by how dominating and controlling he was with Juliet. She was the only woman he ever wanted. Needing to take a Ward in order to be a part of the Brotherhood gives him the perfect opportunity to have her and his revenge for her destroying his career years ago. It was fun to see this new side of him.
Juliet had only ever loved one man, her ex-husband Hadrian. After they divorced, she decided to explore the kinkier side of herself. Only every time a man showed any softness, she lost interest. It was causing her to take dangerous risks to get that thrill she needed. When Hadrian first takes her, she has no idea it is him behind a mask and costume of the video game character she created. Somehow, the masked man who holds her captive knows everything about her, even her seceret desires. She knows she shouldn't enjoy the things he does to her, and yet it is like all of her fantasies have come to life.
Fantastic continuation of the Onyx Brotherhood series! I'd advise reading the rest of the series first, or at least the book prior to this one, for a lot of context. This series is all non-con and dub-con, so please be aware of that before you start it! The FMC in this book does have a non-con kink. I loved all the little details that Haddrian put into the "dungeon"! His character really got a great boost throughout his story! I can't believe Kendrick gets a book next! Super excited to hear his story
The rules of the Brotherhood say that every man must take a ward. There is only one woman that comes to mind for Hadrian and that is his "ex" and estranged wife Juliet. There's no one else for him. When he discovers her k!nk to be dominated by a masked stranger, he seizes the opportunity to make her his again. At first she doesn't know it is him and later when she finds out it's her hubby who is blowing her mind...woo wee! Fireworks! Loved how dark and spicy this story was. Definitely read this one!
Just wow once again my mind has been blown with another book from Captives of the Onyx Brotherhood series. I’m so grateful to be an Arc reader for this series and each book just hooks me in more so much I’m always hanging out for the next one to get my fix.
Cruel Master, the fourth in the series by Zara J Black, follows another Onyx brother - Hadrian - at the Compound. It didn’t hit quite as well as the others for me, but was still enjoyable. Hadrian is a tech genius, the creator of true AI sentient Candice. On one side of the coin, Hadrian is a computing genius content with his creation and professional life. But on the other he is a lonely man who keeps to himself. A man that doesn’t open himself up to others, and one still infatuated with his wife Juliet. When Juliet is kidnapped by the brotherhood to become Hadrian’s ward, her real world, and her fantasy world collide as her very own gaming creation, Saldar, becomes her captor. Time and reality blur as her every sexual fantasy come to life at the hands of Saldar. He torments her, degrades her, but pleasures her more than anyone has been capable of. Hadrian lets his true self come to life as the man behind the mask. Controlling and owning every facet of Juliet’s existence, including her pleasure. In a world where women are treated as property first and foremost, I struggled with some of the degradation and cold approach Hadrian took to making Juliet obedient. But that’s probably the dominant side of me. The plot was good with its mystery and the spice was there. Please read TWs before diving into this series. 3 ⭐️ 3 🌶️
Cruel Master Captive of The Onyx Brotherhood Book 4 By Zara J Black
💻 Secrety Society ⛓️ Master and His Doll 💻 Cybernetic Intelligence ⛓️ BD$M 💻 Second Chance ⛓️ Game Themed Dungeºn
Hadrian who knew you had it in you but oh how we are deliciously glad you do, because 🤭🥵 this book! MAN did it have me pªnting 😉
Hadrian has her eyes set on his ex-wife for his ward. So his ex-wife is who he shall get, but he has a little surprise set in store for her, well it's actually massive and I am still in awe of how he has managed to pull it off, on top of changing his own physical build and appearance, including adding tattoos 🥵 . Anyway, little prepared were the rest of the compound in just how similar Juliet and his CI Candince look alike 😉 But that's not even the biggest twist! When it comes down to the push, will the Cybernetic Intelligence turn against the Brotherhood and expose them all?
This book may have just been my favourite yet, but I will hold my tongue because Kendrick's book is next 😍
I feel like I won the lottery every time a booking this series hits my kindle.
📖:5⭐️’s 🌶️:4 🌶️’s
Cruel Master is the fourth book in the Onyx Brotherhood Series by Zara Black. Each book in the series follows a differ couple but overall it is probably best enjoyed if you read the books in order. This book might be the darkest of the 4 books, but I also probably have said that about each book so far. This book has themes that include:
✅ Secret Society ✅ Second Chance Romance (Previously married and divorced with no cheating) ✅ Captor/Captive ✅ Heavy elements of BDSM ✅ Master/Slave power dynamics
When I tell yeah that I didn’t think the MMC Hadrian had it in him, I have to also tell ya that my jaw is still in the floor from his development in this book. I’m also pretty shook by the ending and just floored that book 5 will be Kendrick’s book. Only Zara Black will have me salivating at the mouth to read a book about a character that I once believed didn’t have MC energy. Bravo… just Bravo… 👏🏾
Oh my gosh! Yes Zara!! I didn’t think this would be able to top Jacob’s book but oh yes it has!!
Pulled into the story from the first page! Hadrian being the quiet one didn’t spike my interest as an MMC but he is such a dark horse. Juliet is also a great MFC that is no pushover and gives as good as she gets. Love their story past and present and you can’t help but love them together. So glad Candice is back online too. Dark but with the perfect amount of romance.
I said in my last review that I hope that Kendrick gets a book as I need his story and the epilogue!!!!! Yes yes yes!!!
Please keep the level of dark going and don’t make him a push over for Rosie.
Zara’s books are some of my absolute favourites especially how once a couples main story is over they still link in flawlessly to other books so you don’t feel you miss them. I appreciate that there aren’t cliffhangers and you get a proper ending but still have a teaser into the next story which keeps you wanting more.
Well Zara has done it again, I LOVED this book and highly recommend this series. I can’t get enough of it, I’m obsessed!!! The storyline, spice, characters and plot twists are all written perfectly and the suspense had me on the edge of my seat. Even though this one was a little darker than the previous books I was still hooked and didn’t want to put it down. Ohh and that ending, what!!! I can’t wait for the next book. Cruel Master is book 4 in the Captives of the Onyx Brotherhood series and with each book we get drawn deeper into this secret society and lives of those in it. Although the books are interconnected standalone’s I recommend reading them in order as the main characters make appearances in each book and we get to dive deeper into the different dynamics and characters stories. So excited to see what happens next!!!
I've never read a book of Zara's that I didn't love and I'm not starting now. Hadrian is just perfect, his nerdy sweet side mixed with his strong commanding side just brings out the best of him. I liked him as a character in the previous books but now we've met him properly he is so much better. He gives Juliet exactly what she needs, a master who fits her darkest desires and a loving partner who encourages her creativity and her mind. The concept of her games dungeon being her cell is really interesting and I love how accurate he made it and his costume, fully immersing Juliet into the scenario. I really enjoyed seeing more of Candace too, and learning about her backstory and development as well as Hadrian learning his failings in how he treated her. And that cliffhanger..... How can you leave it like that. Now I'm even more excited for Kendrick's story than I was before. This really is an amazing series.
Wow! I wasn't really sure how much I was going to end up liking Hadrian as a character going into this book. The previous books gave us very little insight into him and I was a little apprehensive about the AI stuff. Hadrian completely blew my expectations out of the water!! Cruel Master is now my second favorite of the series (sorry, no one can beat Jacob in my eyes 😍) and I loved the dynamic between Hadrian and Juliet. The spicy scenes kept me on the edge and I was very surprised by some of the more elaborate punishments that Zara came up with (hot damn! 😳🥵). Now I'm stuck impatiently waiting for the next book due to that cliffhanger!!! I am eagerly looking forward to learning more about Kendrick and poor Rosie 😔 If you enjoy BDSM, captive romance, slave/master and plenty of steamy scenes then this is definitely the book for you!

Cruel Master couldn't be a more perfect name for Hadrian!
After reading about the shy geeky loner type that Hadrian was throughout the first three books I was excited for his story knowing that he would show a different side to himself and it did not disappoint.
Cruel Master is a part of the Captives of the Onyx Brotherhood series and is the 4th book in the series and should be read in order.
Hadrian chooses to take Juliet as his captive in the brotherhood and the workings of his imagination when he first takes Juliet and gives her exactly what she wanted and needed all along was a wild ride! this book contains non con, Hadrian truly takes the role of Master seriously.
the Onyx brotherhood series just keeps getting better and better.
I was lucky enough to received this book as a ARC and I will be continuing to read anything Zara writes
Zara has done it again with the Brotherhood series. This is Hadrian and Juliet's story. Juliet and Hadrian have a history that is complicated, they were married and Juliet turned Hadrian in to the University. Hadrian then lost his funding, cut off Juliet, and was invited to join the Brotherhood. Now that he has completed creating Candance, he wants to make Juliet his Ward. He's been watching her and wanting to make sure he can be what she wants and needs. When he finally gets her, he gets to play his game with her without her knowing it's him. Things begin to take a turn that could not only hurt Juliet but hurt Hadrian as well. Who is trying to hurt them and why? Will they survive and be able to live their lives within the Brotherhood? How will Juliet feel when she finds out Hadrian is the one keeping her captive?
Sooooo okay I think is my favorite out of the series?? How did I even pick a favorite - I have no clue but this book was well worth the wait. I’m OBSESSED. Second chance love??? Husband wife - messy nasty separation (Juliet turned Hadrian in for his work) - turned captor/captive 🤪 - turned … you’ll have to read to see 🫣 Hadrian saved Juliet. You won’t ever convince me otherwise. She was being reckless trying to find what she wanted out of a partner. She almost ended up 💀 bc of her actions. I’m swoops Hadrian in all his Saldar glory 👀 hellllllo Master. I mean Hadrian - I mean Saldar?? 😉 I also looooved more interaction with Candice! I love her active role throughout. I loved Quinn being a vital part too. I love intertwining characters in a world. And hello THAT ENDING?? Gimme Kendrick NOWWWW ZARA!!!! I just know he’s going to melt me 😏
Hasdrian and Juliet’s story took a bit for me to get into, but once the truths started unfolding, I really felt for them both. Hadrian loves her so deeply that even when faced with impossible choices, his first instinct was still to make sure she was safe. And Juliet’s love for him runs just as strong—her first thought was saving him.
It took them both a long time to truly find themselves, but when they did, they still fit together just as naturally as before. Hadrian started out trying to be what she needed, but in the end, he found a missing part of himself too—the balance between the nerdy scientist and the dominant master.
The epilogue twist was a fun surprise too! I’m really hoping that slimy guy gets what’s coming—maybe from Kendrick? I’ve had such a love-hate relationship with him throughout this series, and I can’t wait to see where his story goes.
As an ARC reader for the entire Onyx Brotherhood series, I was dying to read the next in the series Cruel Master. And it DID NOT disappoint.
As with the others in the series, it's a forced proximity based story with morally grey but lovable characters. The stakes are high and the drama is gripping. The beautiful complexity about the d/s dynamic is what makes this series so special and this book in particular explored a lot of emotional aspects such as AI sentience and moral dilemmas that I haven't read before but thoroughly enjoyed.
The spice is 5* and if you're not into BDSM then this isn't the book for you. But if you are then you're in for a treat.
Zara's writing is addictive, gripping and will leave you begging her for more, just the brothers in the Onyx Brotherhood. Forever one of my favourite authors and series. 10/10!
The boys in the brotherhood really have a way of making me end up loving them! The story and spice for this one is definitely darker than the others so check trigger and content warnings before diving in.
Hadrian and Juliet's story took me a little bit to get into but once some truths were revealed my heart really felt for them both. Hadrian loves her so much it took him only a few minutes to make his choice and even then he was still trying to make sure she was cared for.
And Juliet loves him too, her 1st thought was saving him. It took them both a long time to find their true selves and now that they have they still fit together as well as before. Hadrian started out changing himself and trying to be what she needed, but in the end he found a side of himself he had been missing too and the balance between the nerdy scientist and dominant master.
I was really happy to see Quinn and how much she has bonded with Candice now. My heart broke when Hadrian shut her down, and was so happy to figure out she was ok and still helping them.
The epilogue twist was a fun set up too! I really hope that slimy guy gets dealt with by Kendrick. I'm looking forward to seeing what he will be like, he has been one I've had a love hate relationship this whole series.

Zara J Black does it again with the 4th instalment of the Captives of the Onyx Brotherhood. Wrought with delicious deviousness and a man’s obsession to get back what was once lost, to bend her to his will, Cruel Master sits on a shelf all by itself.
Hadrian refuses to let go of the past and is determined to take back what he believes is his to dominate. Juliet, well, she won’t make it easy for him. And when things go topsy-turvy, they’ll need to rely on each other to get through this.
Don’t forget—this is a dark, dark story, and Ms Black has invited you along for the ride. Just make sure you’re prepared for what the Brotherhood has in store for you.
And as always, please heed the trigger warnings. They’re there for a reason.
This book blew me out of the water!! I was nervous for Hadrain book because in the pervious books he was a geeky nerd that didn’t seem to fit with the other brothers, but that is what made his book even better. Just like Juliet, you get to see him transform into this sadist who puts his sub in her place. This book is definitely dark but i couldn’t put it down. I loved how this book focused on a lot of the dynamics between the MMC and FMC with a sprinkle of side story. It was such an incredible book im still in awe. I never felt bored i was eagerly turning the page to see what would happen next. If you have read the books leading up to this one in the series, i think this book will knock your socks off it’s so good in so many ways.
Well what can I say except Zara delivered again with this book.
I was hooked from the start this series just keeps getting better
Hadrian and Juliet’s story was incredible it had spice, twists and turns through out the book I love how we get to see previous characters from the other books in this one I love Candice and Quinn’s relationship and how they included Juliet into their circle
Ahh that last bit in the book I’m not counting until Kendrick’s book is out
This series is definitely worth the read
I recieved this book as a arc and I’m leaving my honest review in return
I really enjoyed this one and read it in one go. It’s very good for what it is, but it’s definitely spice forward. There is some plot, but it’s pretty basic.
I keep wanting more dark from this series of standalones, only to keep repeating in my reviews that they aren’t really dark. I had the same feeling with this one. The fMC was mainly into everything that happened and the mMC was more reluctant about it. For me that immediately takes away quite some of the darkness. So while I wouldn’t personally call it dark (more gray for me), it was still a good read. It was also different from the previous ones, so it didn’t feel like every book in the series follows the exact same formula.
I was pulled into a world of unbelievable imagination - at least this is something that I could not have conjured up in my mind. A very dark romance:
💥Secret Society 💥MMC Secret Identity for part of the story 💥Slave/Master dynamic 💥Second Chance
There is also betrayal, not from the main characters, that uncover deep seated jealousy and resentment towards Hadrian. Hadrian comes into his own and becomes what Juliet secretly desires, as he never understood her subtle hints when they were previously together. And Juliet slowly accepts her role within the society. A very satisfying HEA.
I love Hadrian and Juliet’s connection, in all its forms. I really enjoyed seeing Hadrian change and grow into himself from previous books and throughout this one. Juliet’s sarcastic inner monologue made me laugh, and I loved watching her react to the “new” Hadrian.
This might be my favorite book in the Brotherhood series, so far. I love the complexity of the characters (Hadrian, in particular), the storyline, plot twists, the spice was off the charts, and that ending? I can’t wait to read the next book!
I can’t recommend it highly enough. Definitely check the TWs and go read this book!
Hadrian feels like his estranged wife, Juliet betrayed him. Yet when it is his time to choose a ward, he can think of no one else but Juliet.
Um, yes. I have read every book in this series thus far and while they are all great, this one is extra spicy. To say I am obsessed is an understatement. I am OBSESSED!! I loved every moment of this book.
"He saved me He'd die for me."
Juliet did not know that Hadrian was the one who had her under his care. Yet when she did, that is when the intensity and spice level really cranked up to another level. I needed a cigarette after reading this book and I don't smoke!
I needed a palate cleanser and was feeling some dark romance, so I obvs reached for a Zara Black book! I’ve read a handful from her and they hit every time!!
Y’all. Let me tell youuuu—Cruel Master had me on the edge of my seat!! I didn’t read the blurb, so I only knew it was dark romance with BDSM elements…and whoa baby, what a wild ride!!
Jumping into book 4 of the series probably wasn’t the best idea, but the author gave enough context that it still worked! The AI subplot kinda threw me though lol, but I’m super interested in Quinn and Jacob’s story!!
Read if you enjoy: -Dark romance -Secret society -Captor x captive -BDSM, dom/sub -Second chance -Dual POV
Thank you Zara for allowing me to continue to Beta read for you! It is truly such a pleasure!
It’s Hadrian’s turn to take a ward, and he’s been dying to show his ex-wife that he’s a changed man.
Dare I say it, Hadrian’s book is my favorite in this series. Is it because I’m a gamer? Maybe. Is it because the phrase “My wife” makes me kick my feet like a child? Probably. I love this series. The spice is fabulous. The plot twists keep me on my toes. And the romance is so much sweeter than expected. Ate. This. Up. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
